North Carolina State University at Raleigh Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Shelby

My classes are small for the most part even though the school is really big. The professors take the time to make sure you succeed and the advisors are really helpful. NCSU prepares students for the real world while getting an education.

Kelsey

some of my professors know me by name, but i am in a lot of big classes where they only know me by student number. my favorite class was biology because the teacher was very lively and excited about the subject. students are very competitive but they also help each other out. i do not spend time with my professors outside of class or know them very personally.

erin

In most of my clases the professor knows the students. The only classes I have had this wear where the professor does not know my name have been my science classes. The classrooms have been large lecture rooms and too many students for the teachers to know by name. However, in any situation the professors could have known my name. It is the student's responsibility at that point to take initiative.

Andy

I enjoy my large classes at NCSU because it takes the pressure off of you in the classroom when you just can't focus as well.

Sarah

Big Classes in biology, small classes in spanish

alison

You can get as involved or uninvolved in your classes as you want to. Generally professors dont know you name. I am in textiles and I know a lot of the students in all of my classes, but the relationship with professors is not as close.

Carrie

I know all of my professors names. My favorite classes are PE related class and of course communication class which are my major.

Emily

The classes that relate to my major are always relatively small. The elective classes are larger sometimes, but I like that because I'm obviously not as interested in those subjects and don't want to be extremely active.

Emily

My favorite kinds of classes are the ones where the professor teaches without a bias. They present an idea but present both sides of it, which develops an atmosphere in the classroom that welcomes discussion. I recently had a professor that was so biased in his opinion on an issue that he was offensive and rude, making it uncomfortable to sit through the rest of his lecture.

Nico

If you do not work your ass off and attend the many worshipers in worship then you will certainly die.

Erika

Some know my name. I don't have a fav. class. My least fav. class is com112. I dunno about other student but I study my but off. Class participation is common. Yes there are intellectual conversations outside of class. No I don't think students are competitive. The most unique class I have taken is ANS150. My major id preparing me to enter vet school someday. No I do not spend time w. professors outside of class unless I need to ask them something during their office hours. NCSU has some hard academic requirements b/c some stuff doesn't even pertain to my major but I still have to take the course. I think the education is geared towards both.

Shelley

Name: Yes Favorite Class: TAM 219L because I get to sew and learn how to make various apparel products Least Favorite: T 105 because I do not want to be an entrepreneur, as hard as I try to stay awake, I fall asleep every week during the nonstop 2 hour lecture Study: depends on the student Class Participation: Depends on the class, class material/professor Intellectual Conversations: yes Competitive: yes Unique: PCC 302 Major/department: Textiles: number one in the nation, has a knowledgeable and skilled administration, advanced technologies, small - provides a sense of community, separate and beautiful campus, excellent facilities Professors: yes Academic Requirements: mostly fair Education: Both

Some of my professors know my name, but not all of them. I don't really care if they don't know my name or not. All I care about is my work and the grades. My favorite class was def. HS 100 (Home Horticulture)with Professor Bryce Lane. He was funny, and interesting, told us stories..it was great. My least favorite, MEA 135 (Weather and Climate) the professor is VERY rude, and the class just sucks. I wouldn't know how often students study, its really up to them. I can have an intellectual conversation outside of class. If it is an interesting topic, why not talk about it? Some students are really competative, but I don't pay attention to them. If you stress yourself out trying to do better on a test then someone else, you'll go crazy. NCSU's academic requirements...where to begin. I understand the gpa requirements. But, having to transfer from one department to the other is really frustrating. The gpa requirements differ from department to department, classes don't always transfer..etc. Its a lot of unnecessary work. If you have one bad semester your freshman year, it takes a LONG time to bounce back. I don't think they should split up the school like that. It makes life difficult for all of us.

Indeed, professors do know me by name. My favorite class would have to be my first ethnobotany class, while my least favorite would have to be my first physics class. Students here study quite frequently, and class participation is required here (and thus very common). As students, we have many intellectual conversations and debates outside of class, and regardless of opinions discussed in them, we find them quite enjoyable. Competitiveness here is at a minimum--students tend to work together quite a bit in order to achieve their goals. You are very likely here to develop friends in all of your classes because of this. The most unique class I have taken would have to be my first ethnobotany class. My department/major is amazing--regardless of how many there are of us, the professors/advisors know all of the students by name, and frequently socialize outside of class with students in organizations, when they run into students on campus, and, in general, whenever you walk into their offices! I do indeed spend time with professors outside of class, in spite of the large class sizes we have here. I think NCSU's academic requirements are for the most part very valid, with the exception of a few odd and end classes. Education at NCSU can be geared towards either getting a job or learning in general--advisors and professors let you mold your education in the way it will be most useful to you as a person.

Erin

Some do. My favorite classes are my social work classes. Least favorite is math. Students study an average amount of time. In some classes, other classes participation is forced. Not really. I think so. I don't think I've taken a unique class. Social work is an excellent department. The professors and advisors are amazing, very knowledgable and approachable. Only during advising. I think they are at an average level. I think learning is geared toward learning for its own sake in most majors, but in some it's more toward getting a job.

Erika

Professors do know my name. My favorite class had to be ENG 101, just because i became so close with my classmates and professor. We were in that class for 4 days a week, so we saw each other more than any other class. Also the fact that the class was small, it aided in our closeness.

Erin

-some of them do, most of my classes are kinda large so its hard for the professor to know everyone -favorite:

Harper

the majority of the professors in my major do know my name. my major isn't that small, but at the same time, my classes are small enough to the point where there is no reason for a teacher not to learn my name throughout the semester. class participation is common in classes because the majority of teachers make it required for part of your grade. as usual, you always have that one person that you want to stop talking because they waste more of the class participating than you've actually learned. i'd have to say my favorite class at ncsu has been ENT201 which was insects and people. dr. sorenson took the time out in the beginning of the semester to bring a camera and take pictures so he could put a name and a face with every student. this class was well over 150 people. not being a science oriented person, he made the understanding of insects something that was easy and seemed almost second nature. one of my least favorite classes at ncsu has been statistics. the class was very difficult because of the way it was taught due to the graduate student that was teaching it. there was not much room for error in this class.

Julie

No. My favorite class is E115. My least favorite is Chemistry. Some students in more difficult majors study all the time and others not so much. Class participation is common in most classes. Yes they have intellectual conversations. Students are competitive. I'm in First Year College, meanin I haven't declared a major yet. No. Some of the requirements are ok, but some I feel are pretty pointless. I think the education is greared toward both.

Quinn

Not all of my teachers know my name because some of the classes are fairly large; however in the smaller classes the professors usually know everyone.I feel like our academic requirements are at the perfect level to challenge us and to help us succeed in the real world.I do not spend time with my professors outside of class... Nor do I know anyone who does.

Ashley

Some professors know my name but only in smaller classes. My favorite class was FLS 110 and my least favorite is FLS 201 because of the teachers. I believe students study habits vary, i study the day before a test unless it is a final. Class participation is common when a students grade depends on it. NCSU students converse all the time about intellectual subjects. Some students are competitive. The most unique class i have taken was an interactive music class. My major is international business and the college of management is amazing! They always are sending me emails of way to get involved with the college. I spend time with professor after class if i have any questions. I believe some academic requirements should not be required, only recommended. From what i know so far, i believe the education is towards getting a job.

Nick

Only a few of my professors know my name because the school is so large and the classes our big. My favorite class is GC 120 which is a graphics class that all Engineers have to take. My least favorite class was English 101, I mean come on I am an Engineer I hate English. I am currently majoring in Civil Engineering. I like the department but have only taken a few of the Civil Engineering courses because first I have to get all my required Engineering classes out of the way (ex. Physics, Calculus, English). The education is definitely geared at getting a job. The school really helps you out with that by hosting one of the largest Engineering career fairs in the country with over 300 Engineering companies attending every year.

Amanda

The education at NCSU depends on which program. Some are geared toward getting a job, or learning for its own sake.

Alex

Half of my professors know my name. I am in 2 large classes which it would be impossible for the instuctor to learn all of our names. My favorite right now would definately be chemistry, its one of my larger classes so my professor doesnt know my name but i had him last semester for basinc chemistry too and really enjoyed his class. In the smaller classes class participation is very common. I know in my economics class and english we are always debating something within the class.

Court

NCSU students are competitive and I think classes are geared toward getting a job and learning for its own sake. About half of my professors overall have been wonderful and the other half weren't very good at all in my opinion. I think teachers need to be held more accountable. I am tired of working very hard and receiving very little effort from some teachers as far as getting grades back within a reasonable time and proper feedback.

Jamie

I feel that most of my teachers made an effort to get to know me, or at least my name. My favorite class is World Food and Population with Bob Patterson. He is an outstanding teacher that really cares, not just about our education, but helping us open our eyes to the problems in the world. I have never spent time with a professor outside of class, but many were willingly to work with students one-on-one. I think NCSU could do a better job helping graudating students find jobs.

Kristen

Most professors in my major do not know my name because I am usually in a large lecture of 200 people or more. I do not really have a favorite class, I feel that I have not learned much that I will use in my career. My least favorite class is all the chemistries. As a Biology major, being required to take all the chemistries that I will never use again is completely pointless. Most classes do not involve participation, it is more of a sit and listen to the professor lecture. Students are competitive, and then you also have the ones just trying to get by. The biology department requires you to take a lot of pointless classes. No, I do not spend time with professors outside of class, that would be weird.

Sarah

The professors in smaller classes know my name and try to get to know their students pretty well. In the larger classes, however, it's difficult for them to get to know us.

Caro

we have big classes and small classes. in your major classes most of them are small enough to know your name. i'm accounting, but i'm not sure if i want to do it for the rest of my life. we have some really good teachers who make the class fun and interesting and not boring.

Gary

Depends on class size

Tyler

NCSU academics are generally very good. There is class participation where appropriate, and professors usually make an effort to learn names. There are always more learning resources available than are taken advantage of by students. The thin spot is with the students themselves. We have a habit of complaining loudly when academically challenged. If you worry about being dragged down to that level, NCSU may not be the best thing for you.

Ryan

Professors do not typically know my name. Religion is my favorite class, Accounting was my least I study very often Class participation is not common Intellectual conversation is held outside of class The business school is very strong but the advisers are terrible. Geared towards getting a job.

Harper

Most of my professors know my name in textiles because the college is smaller than others. Favorite class is visual merchandising because of the projects we get to express our creativity. I absolutely hated my physics class, because I felt that he knew we didn't understand and he didn't do anything about it. Depends on the student, but most are very studious. Class participation is generally required by teachers but most students don't like it, they just want to sit through class and be done with it. Depends on the students. Yes students are very competitive. I have not taken any unique classes. My major is Fashion and Textile Management with a concentration in Brand Management and Marketing. It is very apparel related but a lot in the way of the background of textiles, down to the production of fiber. There is more math and science classes involved than I ever expected, and if I have to use half of the stuff that I had to learn in real life, i would be screwed. No! NC State is determined to help every student find a job, the teachers and advisers are very commited to the students and for the most part reall want to help.

Amber

As a political science and business major, I have the benefit of (generally) smaller classes and less competition for faculty's time and attention. As a research institution, students at NC State have the privilege of being taught by individuals who are currently engaged in cutting edge research, especially in the fields of science and engineering, and many times being a part of this research. From my experience, professors are generally very open to spending time with students outside of class. In addition, many professors are often also work or have worked in the "real world", as entreprenuers, businessmen/women, lawyers, politicians, etc. who bring great insight to the career focuses of their students. They also, in my opinion, bring a more engaged and less "textbook" manner of teaching which greatly benefits students. NC State has also recently revised its General Education Program to make general ed requirements much more flexible for students to choose classes which interest them as well as reduce the number of non-major related hours. These changes allow students to switch majors more easily without having to retake general courses as well as allowing majors and departments to "personalize" their students' requirements.

Sarah

At NCSU I have always had small classes with the exception of two or three large basic sciences or maths. Since there are small classes I have always felt that my professors knew my name, many professors I have had have gone out of their way to learn names, seeing it as important. Professors here are very open in spending time with students after class or during office hours in order to talk about projects or the subject of the class. In fact most of professors enjoy it when students stop by with new ideas. My favorite classes here have been the ones that my professors have been the most enthusiastic about teaching and learning students viewpoints. All of my classes, now that I'm a Junior, require class preparation in order to participate. Being an English major, my literature classes all encourage if not require class participation, which most students partake in. However,I have found that students are not very competitive here and are laid back about grades. I do not mean that they do not care, but they do not think it is the end of the world if they got a lower grade then expected. The education at NCSU is definitely geared towards careers for students, and very helpful in helping students find jobs and internships. There are multiple job fairs a year and a career center offering opportunities for students.
