What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Shelby

Make sure that, where ever you aply to, it is somewhere where you'll be comfortable. I'm from the west coast, and the south is a huge change. It's affecting my health a little bit, which I wasn't expecting, so make sure you cover all you bases before aplying.

Victoria

My number one suggestion to parents is, make sure that this place is a place that you would want to come to. Many times parents just drop their children off at a place unaware of its surroundings and things offered at the campus. Some times parents don't care which is why some children are misearble in college. Even though children and parents think totally different, it is imperative they know what is going on and that they feel comfortable leaving their children on that campus. Also, I would tell the parents find a spiritual place where you know demons could not exist comfortably.

Danielle

Parents let your children have a say in the school they attend. Students listen to your parent's advice. Choose a school where you are going to be comfortable!!! Choose a school for it's academics and not for its partying!!! ENJOY COLLEGE!!!!

Aisha

When looking for a college/university make sure that it has a strong academic achievement center and make sure the class sizes are what you feel comfortable with. Its always good to go a visit the college. Believe me when you visit a college you get to expierence what it would be like if you went there.

Jemica

Look for a school that will shape you into the person you want to become. Look for a school that can give you all the opportunities you'll need in order to be a success. Making the most of your college experience means handling both academic and social activities equally; make time for everything.

dontae

do your best and have fun!

Jazmin

I would tell students that you shouldn't choose a college and/or university just because it has a nice weight room or a good sports team. Instead, you should go into the classrooms and see how the professors interact with their students. You should also ask plenty of questions to make sure that you are choosing the right college and/or university. Last but not least, you should balance your time between work and play, because if you give to much time to one, you won't do well in the other.

DeMeatria

I woud advise parents and or students who are looking for the right college to to START EARLY!! For students who are still in highschool, start yesterday. There are MANY opportunites out there. You want to make sure you've viewd and researched as many OPPORTUNITIES as possible so you can make the best and right descison . It is important that you dont overwhelm yourself, so take it one step at a time. This is a very important step in your life and you want to be sure you take it with an open mind. For parents who want to go back to school, it is key that you give youself time and make sure there is time to go back to school. When you do go back to school, make sure you have time for the children and for yourself. Just because you're a student doesn't mean your parental duties cease. The same advice given to the students can be applied to the parent sutdents. Students need all the help they can get, so parents be patient and as helpful as possible. Most of all HAVE FUN and get ready for the TIME OF YOUR LIFE!

Brittany

The college years are the most exciting and liberating time of a student's life, and the key to getting the most out of this time is to place yourself in a surrounding that ensures not just academic growth, but spiritual, mental, and social growth. I would encourage both students and parents to choose a college or university that ensures essential development in all of these fundamental areas of life . By placing yourself in such an enviroment, you allow yourself to grow into a well rounded young adult that is fully equipped to take the real world by storm!

Nathalie

Make sure you visit the school and get feedback from more than one person that has attended the school of your choice. Talk with the professors to find out what they are like and ask the students what the professors are like. Research the school, look up what the graduation rates are, especially for the major of your choice. Read the school handbook, to find out about rules and regualtions not mentioned upfront. Check the surroundings of the school and the means of transportation for the surrounding area. Above all RESEARCH!

Hyacinth

If i were to advise parents and students about finding the right college I would encourage them to choose the college that offers the most financial aid. I would also suggest that they seriously consider their major before attending the school to ensure that the program that they wish to begin is a strong one. I would have them look online for surveys taken by the students concerning the colleges. They should make sure it is not known for partying or for poor retainment or graduation rate. I would also let them know that this is a large investment and will set the foundation for the rest of the student's life. I would suggest that the student checks to see if they have a learning center that will give them outside assistant.

denisha

Take things easy, do't stress, put all pride to the side and think positive.

Lenny

The advice I would give students finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is go and visit different colleges and apply at college. Never be too proudful to attend a college, because you never know, one day your college might upgrade to an university and do not wait to the last minute to apply start applying as so as possible.

Jessica

when finding the right college before making your decision give the campus a visit and talk to students that attend the school and find out more on it. if the college has the best extracurricular activities and good programs for your career you should give it a 10 points. make sure that the school fit your needs on environment, living style and academic. its best to find out that the school is good for you academically and physically. you don't want to pay for college and not like the campus and professors. research on the colleges you have applied for and make a list and find out which school is the best one for you and affordable.

Sidisse

Dont stick to your first choice, always keep your options open. Make sure you take a look at the campus and the surroundings to see if it necessary for you to have a car, would be better to live off campus,, etc...

Nathan

First, I believe that the student should be able to make the choice of which school to attend by himself/herself. It is a personal choice. If the student is the individual who has to endure the four-year experience at the school, he/she should enjoy himself/herself. Also, choose a school that definitely has the course study that the student is looking for. Many students enter a school thinking that it offers the major(s) that he/she is looking for and it does not. Also, one should find a school that has a equal balance of the academic and social life. This is important because those schools which abuse the social aspect of college can become a huge hinderance in the success of the student. This is also important with the location of the school because depending what amusement buildings (clubs, parks, malls) the school is near can determine the success of the students' academic life as well. All these factors are important when choosing the right school to ensure that the student receives as much success from his/her academic life as he/she does from his/her social life.

Chanel

Take all of this into concideration: Cost- How much am I going to pay, how much Financial Aid is involved? Location- Do I want to be close to home, or do I want to start out new? Do I like large cities, or cozy country setting? Curriculum- Do they even offer classes in the field that I want to pursue? Class sizes- Do I do well in small or large settings? Background- Is it an HBCU or a religious school? Be mindful of that because there is no doubt that background will be part of curriculum. Living situation- On-campus? Apartment? With family? This is important as it adds or subtracts cost. Personality- Look at yourself. For instance, an outgoing person would be more subject to attend a college further away from home, and would be more apt to attend a larger college than a quieter person who might prefer the low-key country setting with smaller class sizes. You know what makes you happy and how you function best.

Ruth

To find the right college, the individual must know what they are looking for in a college. They must look at their needs. For example, does the individual want to stay close to their home and family or does he or she want to move away from home? The individual then must decide what they would like to study, if undecided consider what interests him or her most. Don't worry about the money; scholarships, grants, loans and any other means are available. I also recommend, speaking to an academic advisor for additional advice and information. Parents, relatives and friends may also be helpful; as well as prayer.

Melissa

I suggest that a parent and student should sit down and make a list of what the student likes. Then do some research. Going online is a good idea but its limiting. Talk to other college students. These can be limited to family members, friends, etc. and ask them the pros and cons of their college. A college student always love to express their college so there won't be much their holding back. Next thing to do is try visiting colleges before actually attending their. Visiting colleges gives you a feel of actually attending there. Most colleges have programs which allow interested/future students tour their college. Before actually attending the college making friends that are about to go are a good idea. Making a facebook group such as "College 2010 class" gives you the opportunity to meet future students as yourself, so in a sense your making college buddies before actually attending there. Do YOUR HOMEWORK. Before and after. Senoritis is a myth that will bite you in the behind. And stay focused because while being a freshman you can be distracted academically easily, with all the activities available.

ShaVon

Parents have to steer thier children into the right direction of choosing a school without making the choice for them or hovering. For most first time students this will be there first life changing decision, so help them make it a fun experience that they can look back on as a happy memorie of the beginning of their college career. Students should realize the big responsibility that is given to them in picking a school that is right for them you must take everything into heavy consideration...it's going to be your home for the next four years :D. Make the most of your college experiance. While settling into your classes also go to all of your frosh week (first week of school for freshmen @ alot of schools) activities. Find clubs that best suite you , getting involved in extra-curricular activities helps you become a well rounded person and places you in an environment to make friends.

Ann

choose the right college that is cost effective

Nahendra

Find the school that you want to go to not what your parents are anyone else because your going to be there fore the next 4 or more years. Also find the school that will give you the most money because it is really hard now to get a loan.

Rene

The adivce i would give to parents and/or students about finding the right college is to make sure they know eactly what they want from the school. See if the school is very effective in whatever major that the parents and/or students are looking for. This is very important cause you dont want a year or two to pass by and then you figure out that you dont want to be in the major your in anymore. Also make sure that whoever they are getting as an advisor to make sure he or she is helpful and that they will work with you so that you can graduate on time. By making the most of the college experience doesnt mean to go to parties and get drunk and have sex with how many different people. What it means is to be creative and use our mind and make ur own fun positively for God created fun which means it was meant to be good. Also not to dwell on the negatives of the school but the positives. I hope my advice has been helpful

Danielle

Choose a school that is a wholesome atmosphere

Jasmine

My recommendations to any parent and/or student looking for the right college: always visit prospect colleges and acquire lots of information and input in addition to doing personal research.

emeka

My advice to parents seeking to find the best college or university for their children would be to try to find out the positives and negatives of schools from students who are doing well academically in the schools that their children are interested in.

michael

With consideration to the choice I made for my university, you have to make the decision based on what is best for the student. My university encompases my spiritual beliefs as well as cultural. it may be a little far away from home, but that is something I was able to cope with. Try to take the students interests in to mind and will make them happy and comfortable where they go to school.

Monica

Being a college senior, I have learned that college is what you make of it. Students may go to college because their parents make them go or because they don't know what else to do, but for the students that want to attend college to get a higher education should want to go to a school were they will be happy and focused. There are some party schools that should be excluded when applying simply because it can be very easy to get distracted and off course. Students should research the school and how many students graduate each year with a good career waiting for them. College is too expensive to go "just to go." A student should have the drive to know that this is what they want and this is what they are going to do, and the school that is chosen should fit the needs of that particular student. But whatever school is chosen, it is the students responsibility to not get caught up in all the distractions that can come along with going to college

Keshia

In finding the right college you as the student first of all have to look at your personality. You have to go to different college campuses and get the feel of campus life. If you feel that the campus life would be too distracting then it would be best not to go to the school. There is also safety to think of when choosing a good college. Though the goal is to branch out on your own and discover new territory as you study... is it important to have a college with a responcive and reliable security team on staff.

Samantha

Let the student decide with a little guidance from you

George

Talk to the students of whatever institution you are considering. College students wiil be honest with you about their school, either they enjoy it or they do not for their various reasons.

Mishay

Look for schools that have a good reputation in areas that you find important. If you enjoy sports, go to a college with a good sports program. If you want to be a doctor find a school with a prestigous medical program. College is what you make it. You can find anything at any school. If you want to party all night, you'll find it. If you want to learn and achieve that will be there too. It's up to each individual to make choices that will lead them to what they want to become. Choose your friends wisely, and always be conscience of your surroundings. Dont just follow the crowd and always be an individual. This is a time to grow mentally and emotionally. Always remember that it's ok to make mistakes, as long as you learned from them, and will continue to further yourself as a student, and as a person.

Whitney

I would suggest doing "research" on a possible school before even applying based on the student's likes, needs, interests, and the school's overall success rate, especially in the area in which the student is interested in studying. I would also advise prospective students and parents to visit as many schools as possible to get a real feel of what campus life would be like at any particular institution.

Bethani

Make sure that the school that you as the student picks is the right choice for you. Parents always support the decisions that your son/ daughter chooses because what you believe and feel does matter to your child even if you don't think so. Also make sure that plans to pay for college are already looked into before the students starts that first year of college. The student should always explore all of the options for getting assitance with paying for school and the parents should always be willing to help as well.

DiAndre'

Pick somewhere that the student will be comfortable, but also education-first oriented. You don't want to waste your money, or someone else's for that matter.

Jadrienne

Please search for and utilize all the scholarship awards and grants you can and do not wait until the last minute to get the financial aspect of school taken care of. It is one of the most important things to take care of.

Jonathan

Choose a school that not only suits you mentally, but challenges you physically as well. You need a school that is more than just educational. You need a place where you can have places to go to get away, relax, and enjoyable. Don't choose to go somewhere because of tradition. Choose somewhere that you can appreciate, and a place that will keep you coming back year after year.

Kecha

I say let the student decide. Period. As parents you should be supportive and only make suggestions. Allow your child to visit the campus and really get as much foreknowledge as they possibly can, so that the can make an educated decision.

Peter

I would advise all students to first be honest with yourself. When it comes to finding the right college or university, you want the school that will cater most to who you are, where you are going, and what you want to be in life. It all starts with you. Any future college or university student should have an idea of who they are as a person. This includes the things you like to do, the people you would like to meet, what you like to do for fun, how you relax, and even the subject you would most like to study. Once you know these things you can begin looking for a school that would best fit you and your personally. Make sure to choose schools that have the major you would like to study first. Then think about things such as the size of the school, the location of the school, the campus' cutural diveristy, the accredidation of the school and the percentage of students that succeed after graduation. Think about the school's social life versus its academic life, and where the students stand when it comes to their education. Finally, before you decide, visit the school.

Lou

Experience is what you make it. Get involved, work hard, and stay focused.

Christopher

The advice that I would give to parents and students as they are trying to find the right school to attend is to see what that school has to offer you and ask God if it is his will for you to be there because God will show you where he wants you to be if you ask him. And if its God who does it the n you know you will be in the right place and have the best education you can and have the most fun ever.

Christina

I would let parents and students know that in order to enjoy thier college experince they have to be financially and mentally ready. That was one of the issues I had when i first started school. To make most of the your college experience try not to stress over small stuff, choose your friends wisely, and just live your life to the fullest while your enrolled.

Chya

I would advise them to get to know their child... I have always believed that some students DO NOT need to leap from high school straight to college. Many young ppl need a year to mature at home so they can obtain a better understanding of the impact of college w/o wasting all the time, money and effort needed to get in and out. Four years can easily become a draged out expericed... that can other wise be avoided. College is expensive and it is very critical to finish with plans following graduation... with the burden of a college loan weighing down on you.... it is only wise to really have your child think about the entire situation before setting them in a world that could possible lean to debt and incompletion. College should be one of the best times of your life... but the facts should be weighed and the students should NOT be left in the dark about the truths and after maths that come with all the so-called excitment!

James

When I chose the institution or college that I would attend to continue my education, I considered three key factors which were the following: Spiritual Life, Educational Programs, and Financial Affordability. The spiritual life was important to me because of my personal religious beliefs that I hold higher than any other thing because they are what sculpted my morals and values. The educational programs were important to me because I wanted to get the best background education into my major or area of study so that I could enter graduate school prepared. Lastly, financial affordability was important to me because if I could not pay for the schooling then nothing would happen. I looked for a college that gave me the best scholarship so that I wouldn?t have to force my parents to pay too much money. I used these factors and they helped me tremendously and I have not regretted my choice since.

Jonathan

The success of your future will always depend on how much you are willing to sacrifice for its success. All colleges have to offer are differnt color doors to get to the other side of the acedemic journey, but whats found on the other side can only be determined by you.

Krystal

To parents; Never push your child into a school that you want her or she to go to. College is a opportunity for a young person to be optimistic and somewhat responsible for their destiny. Parents should encourage their children to look into schools that interest them. Parents should also never limit their child to in state schools. Sometime college is the only time for students to explore other places. Why not do it when your young. Be open minded and be sure to visit many campuses before selecting one. To student; Overall , college is what you make it, so make the best of it. Dont get caught up in the hype too much that your grades drop. Find a balance between business and pleasure. Be open minded, and stay active on campus! Like they say, college is the best years of your life! So live it up! (but study too) lol

Kristen

Research as much information possible about the schools being considered. It is important to know which schools offer what. Also, do not shoot down your child's opinion of what school they want to go to. Look at the things they have to offer. As far as making the most of your college experience, the fun does not come to you. You have to make the most of it, no matter what school you go to. Studying is definitely important to. These four years of college really helps you in the future. So make new friends, dont be shy, have fun, study hard and keep a good GPA.

Sarah

The best advice I could offer to parents of college hopefuls would be to communicate with their children. Parents must balance offering them both the freedom to pursue a specific college (and degree), which will enhance and shape their passion in the field of their choice, along with practical boundaries which they can live by in order to find the appropriate setting which cultivates their growth. A supportive parent not only offers financial assistance but guidance through what can easily be a frightening and/or stressful transition from home to an unfamiliar environment. When a young person knows his/her parents are supportive as they acknowledge his/her own choices he/she will be less likely to rebel and more likely to be encouraged to stay focused on his/her goals. College life can be extraordinarily overwhelming sometimes yet parents can help by being available to listen and offer the positive support their children may need. College life is not simply books and tests but includes the potential learning experiences which encompass a mosaic of facets which detail important life skills from: relationships, finances, time management, and workload, balanced by approriate relaxation techniques; each critical to the maintainenance of health.
