What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Diane

The value of restarting school later in life is motivating, invigorating, challenging, satisfying, adventurous and enjoyable. It has given me a new perspective on life, a new beginning and renewed energy. Being in class learning, participating and in the process of achieving my final goal is my only current focus. I am learning from the teachers, students and my surroundings. The economy has affected my family immensely so I felt a new course of action was required of me to compete in this current economic cycle. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be in school, to change careers and to have the support of my family to accomplish my tasks daily.

Andrea

At present, I am a 29 year old college Sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice. I have taken a rigorous curriculum and I have maintained a 3.902 grade point average. I have made the Dean’s List the past four semesters, and I am also an elected club officer serving as Secretary for the Criminal Justice Club. As Secretary of the Criminal Justice Club, I have organized fundraising events to help less fortunate families within my community. I have been able to provide Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas gifts to numerous families within the community. Dedicating my life to refining the lives of others is very appealing to me. My college experience has offered me the opportunity to reach out and inculcate the importance of education and community and individual empowerment. My achievements, high scholastic average, and the service I have provided to my community are reasons why college has been valuable to attend.

After being away from college for such a longtime, I thought I cound not go back. I have struggled as a single parent for much too long. My experience has been so positive and motivating. The students and staff make it such a pleasure to return to something I was afraid of. The teaching staff and their methods have changed to accomodate the working student. Campus and class information is so easy to obtain, forms are user friendly and programs are detailed and direct. It has been so vaulable to attend for the simple reason that I've been able to set a positive example for my daughter who is a high school junior. She and the rest of my family shares in my excitement. I have already seen the fruits of my labor in such a short time. We are experienceing an educational renaissance of sorts. Education is the key to success. We need to challenge our mind on a daily basis no matter our age. There are so many opportunities available for all skill levels. I know that life is difficult but it can be made easier by attending the college of your choice.

My friends’ ears were nearly falling off after all the times I told them how excited I was to go to Rochester Institute of Technology. “I got into RIT School of Film and Animation!” It is one of the best film programs in the country and I had never been more excited. After the long and mildly annoying years of high school, I got a new start at college. As a film student, I live and breathe movies and rarely sleep on account of all the hours we put into productions, but I love being busy because I’m doing what makes me happy. When I was 16, I never could have imagined doing the things I do now. I write, direct, and edit my movies and I crew for other students on their films. I feel confident in my work and I’m eager to get out into the world and be in the film industry. On top of that, I’ve made friends that I couldn’t live without now that they are in my life. I’ve been at RIT for two and a half years and it continues to get better everyday.

Attending college has been very important because it has taught me how working hard is the best way to better yourself as person, and to acquire that which you want. This has taught me the values of hard work, and integrity as well. Aside from this, I have become a better communicator, which has led to me becoming more sociable, and a more involved individual in student run organizations due to this. I feel like attending college has been valuable because it has made me a more well-rounded person, and more of an individual who is capable of being a leader of various tasks as well.

Sara

My college experience has been so much better and bigger than I could have ever imagined. I joined a sorority and have made lifelong friends that I can count on. I joined a club dedicated to my major and have now made invaluable networking contacts. Most importantly, I was helped every step of the way. I am confident in my future after leaving here. The mandatory co-op program allowed me to take a semester off and work in my desired field. I couldn't imagine what college would have been like anywhere but here.

Travis

My college experience has been more or less rewarding thus far, due to the teachers and students I've come to know. Since I am deaf, and RIT is a college that supports deaf people, I feel more at home there than I do back in my hometown. I am able to understand nearly everything the teachers and students say, so I get the most out of my classes and socializing. Other than that, I have been able to find out my limits, and settled into a major I am most comfortable with for my second year. To find out what you're able to do and not able to do is also part of the college experience in learning more about yourself, to find which areas of prospective jobs suit best for you. Looking back, I am glad I decided to choose RIT as my college.

Nia

I found such an amazing jouney a expereince take great course well coperate team work with a students. It's was such amazing expereince ineeded for my gracious skills grow as huge experience. End of year in our major we have an exhibitive show for our working skills. Also I have expereince out of school, a intership work for the first free months. I still have oping much different type of straigges to apply my skills on my presentation, such as like a graphic design, web design, using tool into a apply Photoshop an Illustrator skills. It's very valuable for attending college and learn skills before apply any different type of jobs and that skills apply how much I learn in school. However, as in real world would challages alot different things unlike any different kind University. I also believe this being of next step go into real world as working yourself. This pursue part of my expection grow tool skills.

I am a 31 year old male, who attends Rochester Institute of Technology as a part time student. My major is Information Management Systems and I am looking to graduate in a few years with assistance from scholarship programs like yours. I have a learning disability that has not deterred me from pursuing my dreams. I already have two years of college experience from Monroe Community College and one year of experience from Rochester Institute of Technology. My journey through college has made me a better person by becoming more organized, educated and responsible. Not only does College provide me with more knowledge but it also gives me prestige and a type of status. My college experience has provided me with the opportunity of being the first male in my family to attend and eventually graduate from college. Even though my father past away when I was 24 years old, I believe that walking across that stage would make him so proud. I would appreciate it if you provided me with financial assistance to make that dream come true.

Brenton

When I first left high school I was unsure of what career path I really wanted. Because of this, I attended a community college for a year and decided that college wasn't for me. I spent a few years working at McDonalds first as crew, then as management. This experience taught me a lot of things, but the most important thing it tought me was the value of an education. I learned how much I needed to go back to school and get a college education. After this realization it took me a few years to be able to afford to go back to school. I successfully completed a two year degreee ay my community college and transfered to RIT, a college which perfectly suited my desired career path. I am enjoying my time here. The campus is nice, the professors are great, and my fellow students are nice and supportive. My only worry at this point is the cost of attendance. RIT is great, but expensive. As my classes go on it is becoming harder to work and attend school while maintaining the grades I desire. Despite the cost I am determined to attend and finish my degree.

Matt

I have gotten more out of the my first few months at college than I expected to. I am currently enrolled in a major in Game Design and Development, a fairly new major that has been gaining popularity in recent years. Obviously, programming is a very important skill in the Game Design industry, and before coming to RIT I didn't know a bit of it. As I write this, only 11 weeks into my college career, I have already learned a tremendous amount about two programming languages, Java and C#, important languages to know. I don't think I would have picked these skills up nearly as fast learning them independently. The environment for learning provided by college is invaluable. It gives me the chance to get away from the rest of the world and just focus on my education without the distractions, and I still have the option of going out and having fun in my downtime. I have gotten more than I imagined out of my time at RIT so far, and hope to remain here for the remainder of my college education.

Joei

What I have gotten out of my college experience is the real world experience because people have to go out there and live on their own. It's like moving out of your mother's basement and moving on to a new life. it was valuable to attend because

So far in my college career, I've grown as a person, gaining more responsibility, and finding more ways to help myself and other succeed. My teachers have all been very helpful in teaching subjects as well as wanted to see us succeed and reach our potential. Suny Ulster has proved a great deal of support with fantastic advisors, student services and accessibility for information and help. I've changed my major twice and each time was supported by my advisors and teachers and given many options as to how I can succeed. College has shown me the many opportunities I have to live a better life and help others.

Lianne

I have learned to be more independent. I had to learn to do my school work and not procrastinate. I have also learned that my previous study habits would not work in college. Going away college has been valuable to me because I was able to explore myself. It allowed me to stop focusing on my family situation so much. Instead I spent more time thinking about my goals and what I want. Without the opportunity to leave home, I don't think I would be able to adequetely examine myself.

Andrew

I have gotten so much from going to RIT. I have made many friends, both those in my degree program and those not. Friends that I’m sure I’ll keep in touch with for the rest of my life. I’ve been given the chance to take part in activities that I would have never even considered before. RIT has also exposed me to an incredible variety cultures and beliefs. I’ve been able to meet and interact with students from all over the world, a truly amazing opportunity. And of course I can’t skip the reason I went to college. I have learned so much. Working with the professors and faculty here has been amazing. They are always ready and willing to help where ever they can. I have learned not only the things that I need to know to get the kind of job that I want but ideas and concepts that will follow me for the rest of my life, and I will be a better person for it.

I am currently in my first quarter of college and I'm very happy that I made the choice to go back to school. I was very apprehensive about going back to school at the age of 31 but I can see now that it was a great choice. Returning to school has shown me that I can succeed at education even though I was not able to find that much success in high school. I am currently a 4.0 student and I'm looking forward to all of the classes that I have ahead of me. It has been a great experience to be around other people that are trying to build a successful future for themselves and the teachers have been extremely helpful. Success comes one step at a time, which can be frustrating, but the journey is going well.

Angela

I have learned invaluable study skills and personal dedication to my work. I've learned that school is very important but so is having fun in life. I've met some great people and I'm very glad that I transferred here. I think RIT has a great reputation and I hope this helps when I apply to graduate school.

Joy

After going back to college I have learned to conquer my fears. Here we are almost through with the Fall 2010 semester and I have successfully conquered my worst fear of failure. This has helped to boost my confidence in my efforts at school. I feel that I have grown not only as a person, but as a member of society. Recently in March of 2010 my mom passed away and this gave me the drive to return to school and to not take my time here for granted. I am very thankful for my success as well as the lessons I have learned about myself. I am well aware these days of my potential and I am grateful to have these oppurtunities. I now look forward to my future and the career that I will have in the future. There is no longer any fear here.

Erika

A desire for greater things in life. Diversity and a change in atmosphere. Being surrounded by knowledgeable students and faculty.

Brandon

I have gotten a fluxuating feeling of confidence from my college experience. I try to bring consistancy to school, because my school does not always offer it. On the other hand, some staff and teachers know that their school has some abnormalities, and from that, a sense of comradery is established. I have learned that good work ethic will make or break a student experience. I have gotten the oppurtunity to help others in their studies, and this in turn gives me motivation to succeed in my own. I can get very depressed if I am not doing well in a course, and I value help from other students, this also helps me to get over whatever pride that I may have. I value the time spent in my area of acedemic intrest, my skills of focus thrive during my time in school. I also consider going to college an investment, and I find myself compairing other investments to it. I I dont think that I will be able to sum up my experience until after I graduate, but as of now, college is the biggest challenge of my life!

Kati

I went to community college because I received A+, which paid for two years for me. While that was a great deal and all, I don't really feel challenged enough. Students are still being "spoon fed" so to speak. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa and that is about the only thing that I've gotten out of community college. Most of the students there seem really immature and that makes it hard for professors to take their classes seriously. I worked hard to be able to go to college and I would like to continue to do so. I suppose that college has taught me that some valuable skills such as, speaking, writing, and getting along well with others. I've made some friends that have helped me through some rough times. If it weren't for this college, I don't think I would have made it at a university simply because I would have been thrown in to a new experience without prior knowledge and experience. I hope that I will be able to get some scholarships so I won't have to pay for my transfer school out of pocket.

What I have gotten from my college experience is a taste of real life. Ever since I have been at UVA, I continuously had to struggle financially to stay in because out of state tuition is hard to manage. I have had countless meetings and I have always found a way to make it to the next year. But this year I am out of school and see how the world looks at you. I have witnessed the atrocious job market because I cannot find a job and have been searching for a couple months. This year off so far has made me grow up. UVA taught me how to balance large amounts of work in order to complete what is important, time management. I see how important work is compared to the night life. But I also learned that if you do not relax, then you can burn yourself out. I have learned to get along with people that before I would never had associated with in another place. Overall, college has matured me to a level where I can look at myself as a distinguished individual and the lessons will help me in life’s obstacles.

Krystal

I've been good socail in there and learning from their life issues same time. There is good chance to go there for learning a lot of being yourself, inspires by someone, career, and much more. I am finally become independent myself, got many good advices from there. Their social is the best for everyone, also networking too. It is good idea to go there to have a great experience for their future.

Brandon

The one thing that the college experience as a whole has given me thus far, is a new appreciation for both work and work ethics. My highschool was not exactly what one could call difficult, and never really presented any challenges for the students who went there. When I arrived at RIT however it was another story where there is a much greater workload, and the materials presented are much more difficult. For some this would probably not be what they would consider ideal, as they would wish for something that is much easier. However for someone such as myself who had been yearning for this type of a challenge it was very much welcomed. Because of that I now work much harder and have a lot more pride in my work, and overall just feel better about my day to day activities due to the new found sense of accomplishment that is tied in with completing the new work challenges.

James

I have found that college is a much better enviroment for learning and the structure of the classes is much more valuable way to progress my knowledge. It has been valuable to attend college because I am starting to learn real world applications for what I want to do with the rest of my life.

Rachel

I am a more sociable person because of all the activities I need to participate in now that I am in college. I use to hate group work but now I enjoy it almost as much as I enjoy my solitary time. I believe that college is valuable because it is my last chance to be dependent before entering into complete adulthood.

Emily

I started RIT with expectations that it wouldn't really be much different than highschool. Already, when I'm only in my second year, do I see the difference in what I expected and how I've changed. College requires you to open up, not only if you need someone's help in class but also on the playing field, or the gym, or any other extra-curricular that you are involved in. That's what happened to me, I had to learn to open up and connect with others. Now that I've done that, I've made some of the best friends of my life. We're very close and now I have my own support group when I do poorly on a test, or they act as my cheering squad when I have to pull the all-nighters to get my work done. The academics are challenging like I expected, but nothing was a more pleasent surprise than when I met my friends. They make any hard times at school worth it.

Jon

My first year experience at RIT has been fulfilling. I have established a great, lasting rapport with many faculty and staff have been exposed to a variety of clubs and activities by my fellow peers. I feel that college, especially RIT, introduces its students to diversity both in cultural and educational disciplines. I can attest to that because this year, I have made friends of cultures, customs, and majors that are different from my own. I am positive that I would not enjoy or be familiar with RIT and the things that it has to offer without the power of networking. Going through my first year successfully, I plan to guide the new students and increase the awareness of the educational, recreational, and social opportunities that this school has to offer. Most importantly, I aspire to be the model student. I want to set an example for incoming freshman to follow. My intention is to advise them on how to manage their time effectively, maintaining an acceptable GPA and a healthy social life. If the new students take heed to my advice and learn from my first year experiences, they will have hopefully have a successful and productive first year.

Diablo Valley College has provided the opportunity for an uneducated, fortuneless individual like me to have the opportunity to go to an accredited college and receive and education. Born in poverty, I will never have the chance to get a bachelors degree due to 4 year college’s unreasonable tuition rates. DVC also has one of the highest acceptance rates in California to transfer into UC’s and CSU’s. Through DVC I can get into a otherwise impossible 4 year college. DVC also has a great Inner Club Council that oversees many clubs that provide students the opportunity to get involved with each other, school, and society. Through this I have been a secretary and vice president in a club. I have further learned practical leadership and administration skills. The list is countless but DVC has become more that a college for me but a place of hope and opportunity for me, my family and friends. I don’t have to be cursed with in a society that says it’s impossible to come out of a social class because through DVC anything is possible.

After I graduate from college I plan on working with professionals ,Scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing and coding for insurance purposes , taking and recording vital signs , medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood and administering medications as directed by physician. My personal ambitions are having a better future, help people and have a good job. I think that attending Apollo College will prepare me and give me the ability to get ahead in life. Attending College and becoming a medical assistant would provide me a better income and better opportunities. I would like to live and work in Tucson Arizona at a hospital or a clinic. My other personal ambitions are to have my own house and vehicle without struggling about how I’m going to get the money to pay for them. I believe that with the income of a medical assistant I can afford to do that and even have a little extra money in my pocket.

Timothy

The most valuable result of my college experience so far has been the development of my career goals and ambitions. I entered as an art student, and with the help of my advisors I transferred to the criminal justice major. The college was very helpful in not only in selecting my career ambitions, but in helping me pave the way to achieve them. I am now two classes from graduation and I have developed my resume to include years of volunteer work in my field. My department has directed me towards both research positions and policy development projects which have exceeded my expectations and furthered my interest in the criminal justice field. This guidance from my department has also encouraged me to attend graduate school in the 2009-2010 school year, as well as pursue a doctorate level education.

Michael

My college experience so far has been amazing. Gotten a lot more time management, prioritizing things, and just improving overall work ethic. Being a part of the on-campus ambulance service has shown me how the inner-workings of a college operate. If I hadn't gone to RIT, I don't think that I would have gone and gotten my EMT and pursue that field of work. College has allowed me to be an independent, without having to worry about people looking over my shoulder constantly. This aspect in and of itself has helped me to become more resourceful and self-reliant.

corrinna

I am a totally dofferent person coming out of my freshmen yea at RIT. I have leaned so much not only about my major but socially and culturally. I know that I am very well prepared to go out into the workforce after graduation and I have learned how to act in a professional environment. It has given me the independence to discover myself as a person and given me so many opportunities to do so. GO HERE! you won't regret it!

Allyssa

When i was in high school i was a below average student athlete. I graduated in 2007 and attended Miami Dade College the next fall. A year later I was offered a place on the South Fl Community College softball team and will currently maintain a 2.80 GPA. I will graduate with My A.A. this semester and wish to continue my education at the University of South Florida.

Sean

I've learned an enormous amount of practical and theoretical computational skills during my time here. Even the off-major classes are very informative and well put together, nuturing learning skills as well as vocational skills. I've met a multitude of knowledgable individuals both in and out of my major, collaborated, innovated, and grown personally and interpersonally. More specifically, I've become a better typist, writer, note-taker, listener, and worker. Excelling here requires dedication and motivation, both of which are quickly aquired when you first arrive.

renee

My college experience thus far has been far from ideal. i have not even been to a college football game or homecoming. This university has shown me that all work and no play really do make dull people. i would say that on a regular basis i seriously consider transferring to another university. then i remind myself that companies and graduate schools really value an education from this school they see that u had a degree from here and that looks good. based on that a lone I remind myself that there will be time for fun things later and that sticking this throgh can be much more beneficial in the long run.

Michele

I have gained a lot of leadership experience. I am involved in two major organizations on campus, so I learned how to work well with others, and share ideas.

Celestia

If it were not for college I would literally have no future. My entire life plan rests upon scholarships and education. Education is my key to freedom. I don't want to be working at Whole Foods for the rest of my life. I want to be able to support my younger cousin when he is my age if his parents can't help him. Without college I wouldn't be able to have the opportunity of financial and emotional independence. College for me is liberating and it gives me hope that I can make a better life for myself and the younger generation in my family and community.

Lindsay

From my college experience so far I have learned not to procrastinate. I am very bad at that and it has made it very difficult to complete some of my work. It has taught me that my work quality is lower when I procrastinate as well, when I am rushed I just do enough to get by, I don't try and do my best. It has been valuable to attend because not only did I get a start to my education but I also have learned a lot about myslef that I don't think I would have learned had I not gone.

corrinna

I have learned a whole new way of thinking. I learned so much about design and art. I thrive off of the competition. It keeps me on my toes. It is a place I where I have learned how to use my creativity and implement my personal style in everything I do.

Angela

Over the past year of college I not only learned much more then I knew when graduating from high school, but also I have grown up unbelievably. Right when I first started commuting back and forth twenty-frive minutes to college everyday, my first real job came along as well. Between paying for my bills and trying to put myself through college money was tight and at times just was not there. That was when I learned my first valuable lesson that money does not grow on trees. However, through the struggle I made it and my grades have been excellent from the start. However, over the past year I have broken out of my 'shy shell' and realized that the best way for me to get the full on college experience is to go away to school where I can put full concentration into my school work and give it my all towards nursing school. Therefore, from my college experience I have become upon up to a whole new world of learning and it has inspired me to never give up and no matter what keep moving toward my dream.

rachel

Out of the whole four yearts i've been in high school i learned that violence is not the answer... If i could go back and talk to my teenage self i would say "Self....You have absolutely nothing to prove...." I would be comfortable in my own skin and happy with the way i see myself!!!! I would tell myself that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. And i think high school was valuable because it gave me the life skills i needed to be an adult... It put me in real life situations that i would have to deal wit eveyday once i graduated!!! And im glad i did!!Through every rumor and confrontation it made me who i am!!!

Martin

Oddly enough, the most important things I've learned here have come to me outside of the classroom. The way I see it, college is less about classes and more about learning about people and yourself. Sure, I've picked up some great information and terms in my studies for classes, but that will never compare to what I've learned from spending the waning hours of the night becoming best friends with students from all over the world, from working in a production studio, from realizing that I really can take care of myself and make good choices. I've learned how much more important actions are than words, and I'm learning how to see people for who they really are, not so much who they say they are. I've learned how people can make fools of themselves and how people can make kings of themselves. I'm not afraid of debt; I wouldn't trade this for the world. That's another thing I've learned; don't fear, or rather, walk through fear. There is nothing that is stopping us from learning what we want to learn except our own fears and taboos.

Mitchell

These past 2 years at college I have learned more about myself, others, and the field of game design then I ever thought possible. I have been keeping active with snowboarding and I am also a Brother in the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. I have learned a lot about interacting with other people, and how to be more professional. My interest in my degree has also lead me to do further work outside of class, such as modeling 3D characters for my own animations. My experience here at R.I.T has been literally invaluable, as it has helped to define who I am today. It has made me certain of my career choice and I feel like it is preparing me for the real game design world...as opposed to the theoretical(ideal) career path. I am learning practical game design skills and it is being related or taught by those established in the field. Even though I am only a sophomore I feel confident to start looking for game design co-ops and interviewing, and that is something that a lot of schools cannot provide.

Celinda

I found out that i really enjoy what im learning, and its the open door for my journey to the medical field. As a result i wanna become a registered nurse, and help as many people as i can. My family cannot help me financially since the economy is very horrible. For that matter my father lost his job and cannot support this family. This money will help us alot. So please it would be really appreciated. Thank you - Celinda Aylas

Hello senior. Don't you stress. These college applications have left you a mess. Senioritis sets in because you don't care anymore. Your homework is forgotten, thrown on the floor. You cram for tests to take the next day. The grade doesn't matter as long as it's ok. Goodbye senior. You are moving along. Hello freshman. Try to get through the throng. Don't feel like studying? That's fine with me. Don't feel like socializing? I'll let you be. You can have whatever you want. You can be whoever you want. High school means nothing now that you are here. You don't really know anyone so show no fear. There's a time and place for everything, So welcome to college.

Angelina

I would tell myself that college is the best time of your life and to follow your gut feelings about which college to attend. Also, don't let people take advantage of you because you are a college student. Speak up for yourself or else people will walk all over you.

John

The only advice I would give myself is to be more involved with teachers, and to learn great ways to study becuase college is not a place where coasting by is acceptable.

Jasmine

Make sure that you reach for the stars when applying to schools. Never allow someone to tell you that you are not good enough to apply to a certain school. Keep involved in school activities and make sure your grades are the best that you can make them. Senior year is very busy but make sure you are not to busy to spend time with friends and family. Many of your friends that you have now will disappear but college is the time to meet new people and make new friends. Do not be afraid to reach out to people in college. You absolutely cannot get through college alone! Use your resources! You may have been able to get through high school with ease and without studying but college is a completely different experience. In order to survive and do your best you have to find other students to study with, and above all, you must meet with your professors. They are there for you! If they see you coming to them for help, they will build a relationship and will be more willing to share useful information. College is fun, but remember what you are there for.

Eric

If I were to go back to my senior year, I would only change a few things. I had the opportunity to take some AP courses during my high school but I would have chosen to take a few more so that I could get the most out of college by not having to take as many courses here. By taking more AP classes I would have been able to take more general electives and also minor courses so as to give me a more diverse background of courses on my transcripts. Another thing I would change is that I would choose to join in more activities at school. I felt as if I didn't do enough of what was available to me during high school. We had many clubs and extra-curricular that I wish I would have joined. They would have given me a more experienced outlook on what to do during college. I hope that since I wasn't able to take advantage of all the options in high school, that I'll take advantage of all the opportunities here at RIT. There are many clubs and events to go to that will benefit me.
