What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I like to think of my college experience as falling into the perfect situation. I am lucky to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the nation that has a plethora of both social and educational opportunites and attend a California State University that is quickly becoming a highly respected institution. The education I have received in just the first 2 years of attending has opened my eyes to the depth and breadth of knowledge that I will be able to gain while attending SDSU. When I first came to SDSU, I was a Communications Major. After just 4 weeks of classes, I realized that I wanted to take a completely new path. I became a Business Management major with a specialization in Entreprenuership and a Sociology minors, two fields that I had no previous interest in but was exposed to at SDSU. Once I choose this new direction, professors and advisors were both encouraging and helpful in finding organizations to get involved in, such as the Entreprenuerial Management Center and the Business Honors Program. By taking advantage of all the opportunites available to me at SDSU, I have already gained invaluable experience from my college.

Jessica

Thus far in my college career I have learned the importance of studying and not procrastinating. In high school I was an excellent student yet never had to try very hard to achieve good grades. My first semester of college has been an eye opener for me. Education is extremely important to me and this semester I have learned that good study habits are very important to success and through hard work and persistance I can achieve my goals. Through this experience I have developed a strong study group with friends and learned to stay on top of assignments so that i do not fall behind and become overwhelmed, which is easy to do as I took 5 classes last semester equaling 16 units and am going to take another 5 classes next semester equaling in 18 units.

When I think about the what value I have gotten out of my college experience, what comes to mind is the development of my artistic abilities. Before I started attending college, I was not even sure if I should be an art major, or that I would be good enough. Taking college art classes has made me realize that I did have potential to be an artist, and allowed me to actualize that potential. My art teachers have been nuturing and encouraging, and from them I've learned so many new techniques and approaches to art. Prior to attenting college, I certainly would not have considered myself an artist. However, after gaining more knowledge, skills and experience with art in the classes that I have taken, I now consider myself an artist, and I am inspired to live up to that title.

Doris

I have learned more about what kind of career I would like to pursue. I have learned about what employers are looking for in a student.

Ravi

Personally, a college experience is more than just going to class and returning to your dorm room to do homework. I have definitely gained a greater sense of responsibility as it is the first time I have ever lived without my parents' aid. In addition to this, I also learned how to live with people whose living habits and/or the way they grew up was different from mine as well as becoming a more culturally-aware individual. Most importantly, I realized how valuable I am to the community I live in.

Katrina

From my college experience, I have gained a lot of information and skills in the field I have chosen as my career. Without my college education I would not be able to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher, which is my passion. I love to teach and I am excited to be able to teach children once I have graduated from San Diego State University. My teachers and classes have provided me with an inestimable amount of knowledge in the field of teaching, as well as passing on their experiences on to me, for me to learn from. Going to college has broadened my understanding and knowledge in how to be an effective teacher and prepared me for the world I will be entering after I have finished-the world of education.

Graduating from high school was the best choice I have made in my life, although I haven’t been the greatest in college I now know that I am capable of accomplishing my goals. Attending college has been a very big step towards completing my goals, and the experience that I have gained is valuable in the sense that I had to attend college in order to know what I know. While I attended my first year at Columbia Basin College I didn’t manage my time well enough. I always thought that I could finish everything at the last minute when in reality there was no way that I was able to have a good assignment for my teachers. My assignments were not the best and it was noticeable that not enough time was put into them. I am now capable of managing my time better. As a student who has been to college I would advice anyone who is going on to do their very best every moment and take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented to them. Because it might be too much work now but later on in life it will pay off.

Stephanie

So far, the most valuable thing I have gotten out of the college experience is Spanish. Being able to speak Spanish has been essential in the work place. What I gain from going to college is social status and access to resources. The idea is waving the diploma piece of paper around will hypnotize people into paying me a living wage at my next job, so I can support my family independently.

Kiara

Out of my college experience i have gotten a feel of the Real world, college has taught me responsibility and showed me i can't be lazy about my studies like i did in High School. College is a priviledge, your in it or your not. Its worth all the money it sums up to be. Without out college i probably would have to settle for a normal retail job. Going to college expands your opportunites to excel in your future.

Tessarose

My college experience has taught me the importance of friends and being comfortable in your environment. Its also taught me how to perservere through bad time. It was very hard for me when I first got to San Diego State University. I didn't have friend and I didn't know anybody. I'm also not a very social person. It made me uncomfortable and sad to go to school because I had no one to enjoy my classes with or even anyone to talk to. Because I was so miserable, I lacked the energy and the will to go to class. I'd often skip because I just didnt feel like it was worth it. But when I finally found people who I could share my experience with, my eyes were opened to this great place where I learn about myself and about what I could be in the future. Through this time, I learned to be on my own and to try to make the best of a bad situation. Now, college is a breeze. I have great classes and some boring bad classes, but in the end its all going to help me be a better person.

I am not the traditional college student. My parents, Cuban immigrants who migrated to the U.S. to escape communism before I was born are very poor. At 21 years of age, I shared a small two bedroom apartment in Miami with my parents, older brother and cousin. I slept on a sofa — and not the kind with a pullout bed. My father, once an up and coming commissioned artist in Cuba, was painting houses to make ends meet. My mother lost her low-wage factory job when she became pregnant with me, and never went back to work. To help myself, and my parents, I enrolled in a one-year massage therapy program at an alternative medicine college in Miami. I graduated and opened small business with a friend. With that money, I put myself through a four year program and accomplished a bachelor's degree in journalism. Without my college experience, I would not have landed a job as a free-lance writer for a publication in Florida. I would not have become a massage therapist, which has now inspired me to pursue a nursing career. More importantly, I would not have been able to help my parents.

Despite the set backs of not having a steady job and giving up everything I know to go to school and get a degree. I love my classes. I am inspired by the professors and their passion for thier field. The professors here make me feel as if I can really make a difference in the world with my goals and seeing how much they have accomoplished makes me feel like anything is possible. I am grateful for being able to converse with these enlightened individuals on a daily basis and hope that our communication stays strong in the future. I see that being here gives me so many more opportunites than a community college and that the overall environment of a college campus is youthful, free, and exciting. I have been a part of numerous clubs and organization in my short time here, and am able to explore many of my other interests such as art and dance. I know that all these skills I gain here at the university i will carry with me for the rest of my life. The friendships I am making, the professionalism I am gaining is more than I could ask for.

Tanya

My experience at San Diego State University has helped make me the person I am today. Living on campus was by far the best learning experience. There is this feeling of independence and you quickly realize that you are responsible for you. Of course the umbilical cord is still slightly attached; however, it is the first big jump toward independence. Attending college also forces you to realize that your education is what you want to make of it. You attend classes because it’s important to you, not because the attendance office is going to call home. You begin to define what education means to you and how seriously you want to take it. In addition to academics, there is the social aspect of college. This is a time of personal growth. You make lifelong friends and build networks that will help you later in life. The academic and social components of college together make for an invaluable experience that will last a lifetime. My personal experience at SDSU fostered my desire to continue my education in order to make a difference in the world, and I built relationships that will help make my dream become a reality.

Terrence

it has given me a life experience that will not be forgotten and prepared me for what is to come in life while preparing me to become a well rounded and better person

Johnny

For me, college has represented much more than I thought it would. It has opened countless doors and allowed me to grow exponentially as an individual. In the past two years of college I have learned more about life, happiness and true values than I had in the previous 18. College is much more than just a place for academics, it is a platform for life, and an opportunity for kids to grow out of adolescence and explore opportunities they never before considered. The mind sculpted by a college experience is enriched far beyond those who never attend, not only academically, but socially as well as morally. College has made me into an intellectual human being ready to contribute to society and change the world for the better, and I have only been here for two years.

stephanie

I believe education is one of the best things we can do for ourselfs. I feel very rewarded when I accomplish in earning a degree in my medical Field. I very much enjoy learning new things and applying that to my current career.

Nicole

Although I have just started college, I absolutely love it. It gives me both a place to relax and enjoy the new journey I am starting yet allows me to also stay rigid with my schooling. I think what I am enjoying the most right now is the opportunity to actually attend a university because without scholarships I would never be able to afford it. I work very hard for everything I have and cherish every moment. I feel blessed to be one of the few lucky ones who know what they want to do with their lives and now it's my turn to take the initiative to achieve my dreams.

Justin

I have learned numerous things in my major of Homeland Security Information Technology/Cyber Secutiry. One of the biggest things is that the U.S. isnt as secure as most people think that it is.

Jenna

College gave me not only my memories, both good and sometimes bad, and a student loan, but it gave me lifelong friends and lessons. Four and a half years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to making something out of myself, not to mention the hours clocked of studying, or going slightly insane, in the library. On paper, University gave me a degree; but the mental aspects that I gained are the ones that will really count in the long run: growing up, knowing I’m not alone, knowing I’m capable and strong… these are my personal qualities that will get me thru the hard times. A piece of paper doesn’t always cut it when real life decides to interfere. I gained the hard facts and information that make me qualified for the work force, but I also gained my personality and my morals and ethics. Most importantly, college has taught me the art of perseverance and if anything it isn't so much that it has been valuable to attend, but more so priceless.

Erica

I have only been enrolled in college for about 4 weeks, but so far I love it! I am meeting lots of new people and learning so much. I have already watched a movie in one class and had a pizza party in the other ! I am so glad that I enrolled in college to begin a new chapter in my life. I can't wait for my classes next quarter and I can't wait until I get to graduate with a degree in my chosen field. I love my college, I get to take classes for my chosen profession so I can learn before I start a new career. I dont have to take the 'fluff' courses that do no prepare me for my chosen field.

Jeremiah

Well so far its been an all new experance and i couldn't have asked for more. Campus life has been pretty good a lot of new people some nice some weird you get the picture. Well overall im happy with the way everything has been going and my new life change.

Isabella

I have become more aware of the world, and things that go on everyday that people either choose not to think about or just ignore. I have learned that sometimes you have to be spontaneous and go with the flow. I believe that college is a life changing experience where you not only learn more about the world, but you learn a lot about yourself, and it helps shape you into the person that you will become.

Myranda

I have gotten a sense of worth and working hard to achieve the goals I wanted. Also help getting me ready for the next step and successeding in everything I do in life.

Mia

My college experience has been an incredible thing. I have a relatively unusual background--I took my GED in 2006 at the age of 12 and proceeded to an accredited university at the age of 13. Now, just a few weeks away from being 17, I am almost finished with my Associate in Science and will continue on to a four-year institution most likely in the fall of 2011. Now, of course, socially this puts me in an awkward position, having had such a different experience. On top of this, I have Asperger's syndrome, a social disorder preventing the sufferer from reading social cues. However, I chose to become an anthropology major because of my unique brain and its potential for mending the fall of humanity. Studying humans this way is like studying a different species...and I love it. I see what's going on better than a lot of people my age do, or so I've been told. So, by going to college and studying, on top of everything else I've learned. I've learned society, and I think I might be able to help and sense people where I couldn't before.

Jessica

I just started my second year of college and although now I'm very comfortable with my college environment and routine my college experience didn't start out as great as I would've liked. The whole transition from high school to college was a bit overwhelming for me. I had a hard time meeting people my first year as a result of being enrolled in classes of 500 students and I missed being involved with campus activities. This wasn't the way I wanted to spend the rest of my college experience so I decided to become proactive. I got a job at the campus bookstore, recieved good enough grades to qualify for the Honor's Program and became an officer of a club. My college experience has been very valuable to me because early on it made me realize that if I don't like the way things are going for myself then its solely up to me to change the way that things are turning out.

Hannah

Throughout my college experience, I have grown and changed as a person. I have learned that overcoming hardships scan help drive me to become the best person that I aspire to be. My college experience has been a journey of determination and focus. In the past 2 years, I have gained confidence in myself and my academic ability. I have learned to study hard, but at the same time, I have made life-long friendships. I have also realized that I have great potential to succeed in life and I am as determined as ever. Attending college has already prepared me for my future. I am fully confident in what I want to do it life. I have gained knowledge in my area of study and feel ready for conquer the world. My college experience has shaped and molded me into the woman that I have always wanted to be.

Falande

So far in my college experience i've learned that i have a huge appetite to learn and know anything and everything about well, everything that comes to mind. i've also learn that when i put my mind into something, and i focus in it, i mean really focus into it can accomplish just about anything. As humans, our minds are so limited to information that when we are able to put knowledge into eat we can get enough of it, we want more. Education in our society now is so important because we want a better future for ourselves. its so valuable to attend school because our mind and our knowledge increase, and many doors open for us. Were making a better future for ourselve and our future as well as our future children.

Paola

What I have learned during and in school are mostly ideas and experiences that I would have not been able to learn outside of school. I am greatful that I have had the opportunity to continue my education.

LAURA

I have learned a lot about myself from attending college and am very thankful for that. I have also learned a great deal about how other react and behave and use my knowledge in my daily life.

Brittney

My college expirence has been incredible. I have learned to live on my own, ive learned responsibility, I've learned exactly what I want to do with my life. And I have built up this drive I have to succeed. I've been able to participate when womens colligate rowing a varsity sport for my university and been able to contiuoulsy improve my GPA every semester. Ihave accomplish 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} on a college test, which most cant say they have. College has been an amazing expirence and I cant wait for the new year to start. Ive also been elected to be an officer for two different organizations on campus and was just recently re elected. I volunteer at least every other week all while main taining a healthy social life. I dont think there is more that I could ask for,

Jennifer

I've made new friends from all over the country and world. My experience at college provided me information and resources to further progress in my career. My professors have been in the field where I want to be in and it's nice to have them mentor me in taking the next steps in my career.

My motivation to pursue a major in film originates from my primary driving force of my love of craft? not only the appreciation of the aesthetic, but also the intensity one puts forth when chasing excellence. In my mind, it is that undying drive, that unequivocal thirst to reach your potential, which allows individuals to stand out among the crowd. And here?s the kick: that perhaps the creation stemming solely from one?s artistic expression may in fact alter lives and minds. The yearning I feel emanating from me each and every day to reach that all encompassing attainment, is what I call love. That love is what keeps me at it every day?knowing that in those special moments of life, I can grasp people, situations, lifestyles, ideals, and passion, that will ultimately get me closer to reshaping the minds of millions in ways that few individuals have ever done before. And the way I intend to take advantage of this ?love,? is with a camera. I want to do what I was meant to do. I want to make films. I know this is possible, all because of attending San Diego State University.

Matthew

I was able to by taking two quarters of German at my local community college go into IB German III in March and understand and fully participate as a third year student. I also have learned how the economy works which has made it so I can defend my decisions of what I choose to support in politics which is essential because it is interesting to me. It has allowed me to earn three high school credits along with the other credits I get at my school.

Carolann

I have obtained the essentials of life! Not only have I academically progressed, I have progressed as a strong individual. With such powerful tools accessible to me, my integrity, ethics and perseverance blossomed. The strength I have endured along my journey is so crucial in being the successful person I will be for the rest of my life. With the absence of a mother and father in my life, the college experience has given me a feeling of acceptance. Knowing I am the only person who has gotten myself this far in life has been so rewarding. Anytime there is a feeling of uncertainty, this experience has showed me that there is NOTHING that I can't do. Whatever I set my mind to, is something I know I can achieve. That is a value that doesn't have a price tag. These necessities I have gathered along my path are values I will cherish for the rest of my life, are the values I will teach my peers, they are the values I will teach my children and the generations to come in this world. I couldn't ask for anything more...

From the minute time i've spent in college, I have grown and learned a lot about what it is like to be a productive adult in today's society. College has shown me and given me an opportuniy to make the right decisions. It has also mad me a more responsible person when it comes to important life arrangements. What college has given me is a new sense of accoutablity on what its like to be an adult. It has stimulated my willingness to learn as well as expanded my thought process and allowed me to become a more open-minded person. Higher education has benifited me in ways saids and unsaid.

College has opened up a lot of new doors in my life. Not only have I attained experience in the field of my career dreams, but I have also made a lot of great connections and been through many experiences that I will never forget. College is an integral period in an individual's life where he or she will be tested to their limits and be pushed further to gain strength and develop maturity. By attending college, I have learned that I can excel at anything I put my mind too and I have discovered who I am and who I truly want to be. College has helped me develop my life goals and has paved the way for me to achieve them.

Odyssey

What I have gotten out of my college experiences has been knowledge and power. It has helped me grow in so many different ways I never thought I could grow , it has taken me places I never thought I would ever visit and it has open so many doors for me which has helped me be part of something much more I never imagined. It is because of these great opportunities it has been very valuable for me to attend. It has been my education that has taken me to face challenges and over come them and being a Latina, a women and bilingual has made me even stronger. I am proud to say I am a graduate from a University and some day I want to be able to accomplish a Masters degree. I want to continue to influence others that going to school can make a difference in ones life. I have become a sponge which only wants more and want to see what and how else by continuing my education can help me mold and be able to accomplish so much more. The sky is the limit and I am just thirsty for more.

Ardith

When I think about my college experience so far, it all rushes past in a jumble of memories and emotions that are sometimes hard to detangle. I've found so many things during my first year of college; challenge, friends, love, purpose. This was the year that I finally 'grew up' and left behind my childish misconceptions about the world. I am paying for school entirely through loans, but I truly think that my first year was beyond a price tag. Every class I've taken has taught me something about myself, every friend I've made has shown me something new in the world. I have made true honest friends and deep enemies but it all just seems to fade under the crash of waves at the San Diego beaches. When I think about why this first year at college has been the most valuable year of my life I can't seem to tell between all the fun, but I know that my experiences here have changed me into the person I want to be and given me new hope for my life-- and that is why college has been so valuable to me.

When I was at SDSU for my undergraduate studies, I was extremely focused on getting high grades. The professors at my department did the best they could to make sure we were linked with future employers and that we were given the tools to become future professionals. I met lots of people whose goals were in line with mine. However, because I was so focused on getting high grades, I did not take advantage of the netowrking aspect of the program. I rarely ever attended career fairs and Department mixers, because I though my GPA alone would get me the job of my dreams. I will advice furture college students to focus on academics, but also learn to take advantage of networking opportunities because you cannot get a job based solely on your GPA-employers need to put a face and personality to the GPA.

Danicka

I have been at San Diego State for five years due to changing my major three times and being in a domestic violence relationship. The first three years of college I went to school just to go and did not interact with the students or teachers. The last two years have been amazing. I have learned in my college experience how to interact with people through group work, see the positive sides in situations, and how to live life to the fullest. It is valuable to attend school because it helps shape your life and who you will become in the future.

Jennifer

Out of my college experience I have gotten a sense of accomplishment, learned skills, and friendships. I feel much more confident in myself knowing that I am in a challenging class and can see the positive outcome. Learning new ways of studying and working with others. Along with people that have made a great impact on my life that I will forever be friends with and that have inspired me to be a better more well-rounded person. It has been valuable for me to attend college in order to achieve my goals of becoming a dental hygienist and to push myself in ways that I haven't before. I enjoy a challenge and love to see how I can overcome and come out on top. I value my education and appreciate the opportunity to be able to attend and want to continue learning in my future.

Brittany

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience. The most important thing I think I recieved would growing as a person. I learned how to juggle my time very well while in college, this will allow me to better manage my time once I graduate and have a job. I have became more diverse attending SDSU, I was from a small city when I came here. I have learned that different people have different ways of thinking, learning, and going about their lives. I have gotten a education that was well beyond just book education. I have learned through different expereiences and others experiences. SDSU has allowed me with great oppuritonities to achieve better things in my future education and life. I had the oppuritionity to help mentor students, research, and spread sexual health knowledge to a lot of people. These experiences from this school have made me who I am today and this is why I value my education and experiences at SDSU.

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, knowing what i know now about college life and making the transition, i would first and foremost advise myself to choose a college with a similar atmosphere to the place I'm from. Because I'm from Hawaii, I wanted to go away for college to broaden my horizons, however, San Diego State has been a huge culture shock. I would advise myself to attend a college where there are other people from Hawaii (and has a Hawaii Club), so I have people to relate to and talk to about transitioning into college. I would also choose a college much smaller, located in a not so developed city. Despite the culture shock and home-sick feelings, I would advise myself to keep positive outlook and try as many new things as possible. Also, be friendly and make yourself availiable to make new friends. Taking advantage of all the Welcome Week activites and other activites the school puts on is a good and exciting way to meet people who want to meet new people as well. :)

Devin

If I could return to my high school self to give advice on how to go about living a better life, I?m afraid I would overwhelm him with admonitions and encouragements. Although there is very little that I presently regret of my time spent since high school, there are many suggestions that I would make. First, due to my feverish need to better myself, I would tell him to learn from every experience and devote himself to all of his studies. Second, I would encourage him to disregard the numerous petty worries of youth that require far too much time, anxiety, and concern. Third, I would tell him to not only look to the future, but to live in the present, and enjoy all of the beauties and wonders that this life can provide. Lastly, if I were able to maintain my high school self?s interest and attention, I would definitely tell him to warm up his throwing shoulder a little better before the second game of the senior baseball season. This would assuredly prevent years of lamentation and pave the way for my inevitable career in the MLB and a very probable invitation to the HallofFame.

Hilda

If I could go back in time and talk to myself when I was a high school senior I would advice myself that there is nothing more important than a college education. Without it you will work all your life in your field learning the trade but unable to obtain the pay you would had I gotten a college education. I would also tell myself it is never to late to go back to school. Going to college immedately after high school would be a good example for your children. Things can be taken from you, you can loose material objects, but know one can ever take what you've learned and whats in your head.

Elisa

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to take the same path I was planning to take anyway. All the experiences I have had through the community college and now in the university have made me a more mature, educated, and knowledgable individual. One thing I would tell myself though, is to always be in the moment, if I'm in one class, be in that class: participate in all discussions, actively take notes - really be part of the class - something I would do, but not always to my full potential until recently.

Jaedeleen

The very first thing I would tell myself is not to predestine my future. When you enter college you not only take classes for your major, but you also take courses that allows you to become a well rounded person, and in doing so you are open to more oppertunities that shows oneself their capabliities and strengths, which may be different from what you wanted to become. I would also advise myself to learn how to open up. Being a shy person, I usually confide myself to my studies, and believe that just grades are all thats needed for a bright future. Although that may be true for some cases, in acutality in opening up and joining clubs, honor societies, and other organizations a person will be more equiped with what it takes to pursue that career into the realistic world, and by having those connections any person will be presented with more oppertunites to put your aspirations and ambitions into action.

Stephanie

If I could go back in time I would tell myself to be more prepared financially and to be prepared to become more independent. In high school, the school creates a class schedule, is watching you like a hawk to make sure you attend class, turn in homework, and be on time. In college, the professor expects you to look up all your class information, expects you to be able to afford the expensive textbooks after you just payed for all your classes, and then expects you to ace the exams, regardless of your work load in other classes.
