What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Daniel

The advice I would give to students and parents about finding the right college is to make sure the college has your major or a major you may be interested in. Make sure that the college you choose is in a comfortable distance from your home and that you will be able to find things you are interested in doing in the surrounding area. The advice I would give to students making the most of their college experience is to have fun, but also remember to keep your grades up. Make sure that you go out in the first few weeks of school and make friends. Don't stay in your dorm all day or you will regret when you have free time and there is no one to hang out with. If you don't go out and have fun the semester will seem very long. You will start to feel lonely and soon thoughts of dropping out will start to come to mind. So choose a school that will fit you personality and make sure that while in school make sure just to have fun because it can be the best time of your life.

To find the right college, first have an idea of what you want to do after college, because each school seems to have a specialty area. If you don't have any idea, find out what you don't want to do and find a school that doesn't specialize in that. Tour the campus, the student guides are a great source of campus life and facility infomation. Once on campus, find 3 clubs on campus to get involved in. One of those should be a club for your major of interest.

elizabeth

I've learned that the right college is one that will recognize that you are a new student and will be friendly and seek you out and not let you roam from major to major for years and years. that doesnt help anyone. Also, counselors who have to put themselves in your shoes and not ramble as if we already what's going on. My library is open until midnight. i'd never heard of such a thing. I love my school

Growing up in a small town i knew i wanted to go out in the world and explore after high school. I wanted to search my options, my parents were very supportive in helping me find the right school. Many colleges have web sites that you can look at but it is deffinenty not the same as taking a tour. Once i stepped foot on the San Jose State campus i knew it was the school for me. My first semester here was both frightning and exciting, it was difficult to have to step out of my comfort zone, but i had to remember that all the other freshmen were in the same boat. Living with new people was a chalenge for me, but i had to learn to overcome the many differences that i faced. Attending classes in a university was a whole new experience, nothing like a typicle high school class, the professors expect more out of you, it can be stressful at first, but most classes are interesting, you can't help but want to learn. The hardest part of college for me was learning how to balence my social life and my education.

Candice

Research schools well, with thoughts of what your major is. Visit schools that interest you and talk to students there. Explore options like sororities or other groups. Drive the surrounding areas, learn what activities are available. Find out where help and information is available. Ask yourself "Doe's this campus mirror my lifestyle and approach?".

tania

make sure it is the college that the student wants to go to. if they want to go away (not stay at home), let them!

Brianna

When parents and students visit colleges it is very important to find the school the student feels they fit in best at. It is also important to keep the surroundings in mind! If the student hates cold it probably isnt a good idea for him or her to go to San Francisco state. If the student loves the beach then San Diego State would be great!

Michael

visit your choices of school and stay go to events and ask lots of questions, also try to sit in on a class or two.

Melissa

I would tell students to research schools as much as possible. Go and visit if possible. Once you're there, get involved in something you're interested in. That's where you'll make the best friends. Living on campus helps one to feel more connected; plus, you get more of a complete experience. Take the professors that will teach you the most, not the ones who give easy A's. Make wise decisions. Learn and remember your limits. Don't take on too much at once. To parents, I would say support your children. There might not be much money in art, but if that's what they want to do, and you support them, they will be happier. Support what they choose to do and who they choose to be. Not only will it keep you sane, it will keep them sane and happy as well.

San Jose State is a fine campus if you are just looking to get a degree while still being able to live at home. It's very much a commuter college. If you are looking for a true "college" experience I'm not sure this is the place for you. There school feels very much like a high school. There is little diversity among the population of the school socially. Racially there is a good slice for the most part. But the majority of the students are priveleged upper middle class and not very open to other ways of thinking. San Jose State has excellent academic programs but don't be expecting the best social or student life on campus.

Alexandra

Choose a college that fits you, with the major it offers, the type of community it provides, the activities it offers, and the people you will be around. Ask yourself: do I want to play intramural sports? Do I want to stay at home or go away? What career would I like to have? What special programs does the university offer? What about the university is unique? Do you want a community that is faith based, community service based, career/major based, sport based, club based, or leisure/recreation based? Do you want a school with fraternities or sororities? Research the school, outside the information the school's website provides, and don't choose a school based on only one criteria. Remember, choose a school that will make you happy, because it is only when you have a positive and satisfied state of mind that you have the opportunity to become truly successful.

In order to find a right college a student must know at least the field of his interest such as Engineering, Science, Art and so on even if a students couldn't name the exact major yet. As soon as a student knows his (or her) field he can narrow down his searches. He must also decide how far he wants to be away from home; choose where he wants to live while going to the school. It is very important to choose the right step at the beginning.

Aleks

I recommend living on or close to campus. I think I missed out on a lot being a commuter student.

Sandy

The advice I would give is to find a school that one would feel comfortable in. Students need a comfortable environment where they would feel accepted and study with ease. Attending the best college doesn't mean the student would get the best education. Most colleges have the same-rate teachers; the students and priorities the college sets up is what makes the college stand out. To make the most of the college experience, students should be active in school activities. However, having friends and doing good in classes can create a memorable experience too.

sonia

I would advise students and parents to check out the colleges that they have in mind. They should see the campus and how the environment of the schools are. Parents and students should look into the academic statistics of the schools too. Some schools are better fit for students that are planning to be in certain majors. For example San Jose State University is great for students who are majoring in business because it is in the heart of the Sillicon Valley. Other than those main aspects of colleges, I would suggest for the student to stay in the campus' area for atleast a weekend before making such a huge commitment to the school. It is really important for the student to be comfortable and happy in the school that they attend.

Do not rush, take the time to examine what you might want to study before making a decision on a university. Ifyou still don't know when August runs around, look at other factors such as finances, your experience when visiting the campus (you must make campus visits!) and what extracurriculars you might want to be involved in. That being said, get as much financial aid and scholarship money as possible, the less you have to work the more you can focus on the total college experience instead of making rent or that next tuition payment. While you're there, make the most of it, study subjects you have an interest in instead of something you might be completly dispassionate about but are doing for the money. As a final aside, become involved. Join clubs, make friends, and take part in any and all organizations you might find enriching. You only go through this once, get everything you can out it.

Look very carefully into all of the requirements for the school - what do they accept from other colleges, will they give you a list of exactly what you need to take to graduate, etc. And look around the campus to make sure it will meet all your needs - is there adequate parking, is the parking near the classes, are there lights for after night classes, etc.

Terri

The main purpose of attending college is to gain more knowledge through higher learning, but college is not just about academics. A college student must feel comfortable around his or her environment in order for that student to concentrate on his or her studies and complete college. When choosing a college, a student must consider the academic programs that are available, housing, and extracurricular activities. Select a college that best fits your lifestyle. To make the most of college, students should get to know their professors and classmates and seek their advice. You need all the help you can get.

Deian

Talk to students from the colleges

Saleem

Dont limit yourself to a school that simply had a good program. Look for a school with social diversity.

Moises

Give it your all and never give up! Education is not confined by age, but by the will and desire to grasp, learn, and utilize it!

Shelsy

Students always go visit the school before you attend. Make sure you can be on campus and feel like you are comfortable never go somewhere where you feel out of place eventhough you don't know anyone there. Parents always let your children make the decision that they think is best for themselves. This is the first huge decision of their life and if they are pressured to pick something that they themselves really aren't interested in their college experience won't be as amazing as it can be. College is an opportuinity that not everyone gets to experience and its an amazing opportunity to make life decisions and discover so much about yourself. Have fun making the decision and have fun once you are at college there is nothing quite like it. Theres no other time in life where you can be in school be moderately carefree and have so much fun, let the experience be what you make it and don't let anyone make it into something you don't want it to be. Always remember that you are a student first and everythign else second though.

Vinita

Always go to the college because deciding to actually go there. You need to find the right quality such as atmosphere, career goal and location of the campus. These thing will definately get u to the right college.

Mario

Take your time and make sure it is a place that you will like to be at because you are going to be there for a while. =)

Edward

Listen to your childrens' voices. Respect their choices and know that they will do good if you stand by them. It all works out. Just have mutual respect when choosing colleges and don't get sucked into a colleges reputation. Focus on location, affordability, etc.

Ahmer

work hard

Amory

Make sure the university is suited to prepare you for the career/professional school you desire.

Arielle

Have fun and go only if you are ready.

College is time in a student?s life when they leave childhood and enter adulthood. With adulthood comes many life lessons and decisions they must face. It is important for the student to be excited about college and its infinite possibilities. If the student is not excited, he or she will not put adequate effort in the classes they are taking. Students should be able to attend the colleges they want and study the majors that truly interest them. Students must remember that college is a once in a lifetime opportunity and they must take it seriously. Although college is a time for socializing, it is more importantly a time to become educated and ultimately learn to be good law abiding citizens in the community.

Jamie

Find a college that has the best academic record for the career direction in which you wish to pursue. Don't get stuck on the name or status of a college. Visit college campuses and find one that fits your needs.

Brian

Live on campus only your freshman year! Don't live on campus after that. It's not worth the expensive prices. Plus, you dont have to worry about the RA's bugging you if your house gets to loud. Also, make sure the school has your major. Try to pick a major before you enter college. It makes it much easier to plan out your course work. Also, make sure you do all your paper work on time.

Stacy

Finding the right college to go to is difficult. Many offer similar programs but it is important to pick a school that has many opportunities available. I wanted to go to school for a specific field but I figured out I did not enjoy it. It's important to remember that you can change majors and still stay on track, so I suggest choosing a school with lots of interesting options. Living on campus is also important because you truly get the "college experience" of meeting new people, being more active, and having the advantage of not commuting. Think less about how much it is going to cost you, and more about how much you will get out of going there.

Finding the right college starts with how comfortable you are with the colleges you are trying to pick. when i picked the college i wanted to go to, people were surprised. i didnt care. as long as i was happy with my choice, i was fine. making the most of your college experience is all up to you. no one is going to hold your hand and ask you if you want to do this or that. you have to make the initiative in making friends or staying behind. joining a club or greek is not as bad as it seems. some people will still talk to you if you dont join. most of the greeks on campus dont even care if you want to join them. they will still hang out and talk to you. be honest and chill.
