What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Skidmore is a very, very social place. The most popular groups on campus I would say are the acapella groups/ musicians, as well as the comedy troups. Athletics, not as much, but I've heard they get a good turnout at games. Theater is pretty big at Skidmore, and there are a couple of shows a semester. The dorms are a great place to meet people. Apart from Wiecking Hall, all of the dorms are suite style and opening up onto one big hallway, so it is simultaneously private and social. Kids leave their doors open, and there are always people around to hang out with. There are common rooms on each floor, and all the dorms are pretty close to each other. Once you're an upperclassmen, you live in Scribner or Northwoods, 2 on-campus apartment complexes which are 5 minutes further away from the academic buildings. Scribner is extremely social, with houses that hold 4,5,6, or 7 kids. It is like a neighborhood, with many different units and houses. At nights and on weekends, there are parties and concerts in Scribner, and there is always somewhere to go off campus as well. Skidmore doesn't have greek life, but many of the sports teams and clubs have off-campus houses, and they usually provide nightlife for students. Also, Caroline Street (off the main road) has many bars and clubs for the 21+ crowd, and a new club The Grotto just opened up with 18+ nights. There isn't much pressure to go out and party, though. Plenty of kids hang out in dorms or in the Spa or Case Studen Center at night, where there are often comedians, concerts, movies, or speakers. There's something for everyone. Skidmore's got some great traditions as well. On Halloween, there's MORBID- the halloween dance. It's the one night the entire school gets dressed up and has a good time. It gets a little crazy, yet it is easily one of the best nights of the year, and everyone looks forward to it. Also, in the winter there is Junior Ring, a semiformal dance, which again most people go to. In the spring, there is Fun Day! There are moonwalks, dunktanks, booths, carnival foods, and the best part is that it is OUTSIDE IN THE WARM WEATHER. The entire school goes out and hangs out on the green. It is at the end of the semester, so it is a great way to destress and let your inner kid come out again. There are also 2 big concerts a year put on by the entertainment committee. Often its a big name act, and again most kids go to those. There's something for everyone.

The most popular groups are the environmental club, acapella groups, theater groups and dance teams. I am an athlete and sometimes do feel very underappreciated. People have respect for the athletes here but have no interest in supporting them. If you are looking to go to school to play a sport that you love because you love it, Skidmore is for you. However, if you are looking to go to school because you want to play a sport and want your college experience to revolve around that, Skidmore may not be the right choice. I met my closest friends from my freshman seminar. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday I am probably finishing homework. At Skidmore there is definitely the option to party every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. But at the same time there are a lot of other things going on around campus that it is not a must. You could easily never go to a party, but still find something to do every night.

A cappela groups are amazing. The comedy groups (Ad Libs and Sketchies) are hysterical as well. Ad Libs are very hard to get into. Students sometimes leave their doors open, it's kind of difficult because everyone is in suites. Athletic events are not very popular, but many guest speakers are. John Ashcroft came about a month ago! Most people seem to be into the random hookups. Those can be fun for a while, but it would be nice if more guys were into relationships. Partying is very popular. Weekends start on Thursdays. On Thursday, the bar scene is pretty popular, or just hanging out drinking and smoking pot in the dorms. Fridays most people go to Scribner or Northwoods (upperclassmen on campus housing) or off cmapus for parties. Saturdays are the same. There are no frats/sororities. It's better that way. The school sponsors non-drinking events, but they are not very popular.

The a cappella groups are really popular, and so are the various sports teams. Most people belong to some extracurricular, whether it be theatre, a creative-writing outlet, a singing group, or a political group. People know how to party, but Skidmore is not a party school. The weekends are ALWAYS full of things to do, whether it be partying with a big group at an apartment, going to a show with friends, or just hanging in your room with a few friends. You have no excuse to be bored on the weekends. The Skidmore scene is huge: there are always lectures, musical guests, speakers, art shows, etc. going on during the week and weekend and a lot of people attend. I have gone to more lectures and shows in my year at Skidmore than I have in my previous life combined.

Sports are not popular on campus. Jocks stick to themselves mostly. Students in dorms sometimes leave their doors open, sometimes don't. Depends on how messy your room is. Theater is like its own clique here. I've never seen so many theater nerds thinking they are popular...but at Skidmore, that's how it goes. They are pretty exclusive...and the rest of the student body doesn't really mind. The dating scene? Mostly random hookups and very few couples. Most guys aren't looking for a relationship, and lots of girls are desperate to find one. But that's pretty typical of college. Skidmore is smaller than most people realize, so be wary of who you hook up with. At 2 AM on a Tuesday night I am either hanging with friends or procrastinating doing my homework. There are no fraternities or sororities. If you're looking to join one, join the Ultimate Frisbee team. Seriously, they will haze you. Last weekend I went to several parties, lost a shoe, and woke up with a bruise on my elbow. On a Saturday night you can study in your room with your headphones on, while your roommate plays drinking games with his/her friends. I don't really have friends who don't drink. Off campus there are tons of bars, but since I'm not 21, I spend my time going to restaurants, shopping, coffee shops, and the park.

Skidmore is surprisingly apathetic to political and social action. Because their is no good place on campus to socialize - no bar, community center, etc. that is open to student use, most parties go on at apartments, making it kind of a bummer. There are lots of events, bands playing and such, but its the same College bands month after month and it gets old real quick.

Matt

Ice Hockey and Soccer are the two most popular sports. The theater department and dance department are very talented groups and draw a lot of attention. The Tang museum holds many different events for artists and showcases their work.

Nick

the drinking team has a frisbee problem

Eliza

Acapella groups are the closest thing to sororities and fraternities at Skidmore. Comedy groups are pretty popular...and hilarious!

Social life is great. We have soo many activities going on. There's always a play, dance thing, or acapella show going down. We have John Ashcoft coming soon. We have no Greek life. There are a lot of different clubs you can join. I have no idea how people start dating because I really don't know how that works. Generally, the good looking guys are getting with the good looking girls and same for the unattractive guys and girls. People in the middle of that spectrum are either trying to get with someone out of their league or trying to understand why they can't meet someone. I met my closest friends either in class or I was with them in London first semester. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I'm pulling and all nighter on a paper or a project, hyped up on caffeine, and envious of my roommate sleeping in her bed while I am hunched over my laptop. Every year there's Fun Day, which I have no experienced yet, and the outdoors club runs naked across campus. Last weekend I went to my friend's play, a comedy group, and went to see Oveous Maximus do some slam poetry. And then I partied. And I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to be drinking on a Saturday.

Amanda

Environmental club is probably the biggest club on campus. There aren't any fraternities or sororities, although Frisbee Club may as well be a frat- complete with hazing. People party almost every weekend, starting Wednesday or Thursday night- pick your poison- alcohol, marijuana, or harder drugs. There are also things to do if you aren't into drinking, although most people will think you're strange if you don't drink at all. There are concerts, comedy performances, dances, plays, and speakers, or some combination of these, most weekends.

Danielle

The Acappella groups are our versions of Greek life. Everyone goes to their jams, it isn't an event at Skidmore without an A Cappella performance. We have no greek life, but there are plenty of house parties. There's a great Late Night program that's sponsored by the school every Friday and Saturday night--all substance free activities like Karaoke, comedians, movies, game nights, etc

Chris

I wake up at 12 noon and typically go to bed around 4-5am everyday. I work two jobs, fill a heavy class load, work out my leadership role for extracurricular events, write and read outside of class, and yet I still find time to spin around campus and drink every weekend. There are groups of people who tend t associate with one another, but I shift between any three or four of these on a given night. People are friendly and honest. I'm an artsy english major but I live in a house full of jocks and these guys are fantastic. There is certainly a pretty hard line between jocks and art kids here at Skidmore, but there are solid individuals on all sides. Aw yeas

i would say the ockapella groups are th emost popular. im on teh basketball team its a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. spend lots of tiem at the gym on average about 3.5 hours per day. yes students leave their doors open when they are in the room, other htan that they are locked as they should be. athletic events are mostly popular among other athletes, athletes support athletes adn thats about it which it would be nice if it were to improve. met my closest friends on my team as well as on my floor each year in the dorms. never awake at 2am on aa tuesday. love the junior ring dance every year, its a great event that gets more fun with each passing year. party about 1-2 times per week. went home las tweekend. saturday ngiht is usually the night i pick to drink if any, and usually end up downtown on caroline street when venturing off campus.

Mitchell

The Skidmore Outing Club is popular.

Nico

Athletics are not big, except for Dance clubs. A Cappella is standard, but the groups are subpar. We get great musical acts every semester through SEC and Lively Lucy's. We also get some really amazing guest speakers. The theater productions are usually sold out or close to it. Freshmen year is when you really cement who you are close with and after that people kind of stick to their groups til senior year when everyone realizes its the end. There is always a big halloween party, and in the spring we have fun day which is just like it sounds. Kids like to drink, but if you don't drink every friday night is something in the student center (ie guest speaker or games or whatever) and saturday nights there are free movies that aren't out in the stores yet. Off Campus are house parties and bars.
