The University of Texas at Austin Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

craig

UT is a very large public university. Diversity is everywhere. I couldn't think of anything that I wold change about UT.

Jonathan

Austin is the greatest place you could ask for in a College town and attracts top notch students and professors. We have a lot of school pride. The only thing I would improve would be to make some classes smaller, like organic chemistry.

Scott

The best thing about UT is the sports and the national recognition they have

Josh

Athletics are great at UT. There is a lot of school spirit especially when it comes to football, basketball, and baseball. Austin is a great city. There is a lot to do in Austin and also a lot to do in the surrounding area.

Alex

The University of Texas is a large environment but one in which you can find your niche. It is easy to find people you relate to and the smallest organizations can make an impact on the campus and community. Austin is a huge town, I would not really consider it a college town. It does offer lists of great adventures and opportunities. When I tell people to come to UT they already know about it and most of the time say it is on their list of schools.

Brett

Our football tradition, our tower, our academic prestige, and the city are four of the best things about UT. We have awesome football tradition and great game day experience, and a very recognizable tower. We have a great school academically and an awesome city for college age people.

Blake

-social scene, academics, and sports are awesome -the top ten percent needs to be taken away. maybe then people that really deserve to get in will be admitted

Ryan

The University of Texas college experience is driven by student organizations. Whether it be greek, spirt, or service organization, joining a student organization enhances the college experience. I cannot imagine my life to this point without the friends and relationships that have come because of my student organization. With 55,000 students, you have to find something to make the school feel smaller. Student organizations do just that and in addition help mold people into the good longhorns and good citizens they will ultimately become.

Alex

Texas is great, the traditions, sports and classes are great. The best part of Texas might be that its located in Austin so we have the best of both worlds. On one hand, we have a great college atmosphere but Austin is also a booming city so there are many internships and 6th street.

Zach

UT is a great school. While it is a big school, it does not seem like it. I always feel like I run into people I know. When I tell people from home i go to UT, they seem surprised. Not many people from Florida come here. It is also a lot of fun. I doubt there are many other schools that have something like a 6th Street.

Devin

6th street is the shit. UT is large, but I like it. When I tell people I go to UT, they are usually impressed because it's hard to get in as an out of state student.

zack

The best thing about UT is all the opportunity it provides for students to get involved in different organizations on campus. I would not change one thing about UT - it is the perfect size. People get excited when I tell them I go to UT, either because they want to go here or are jealous. Most of my time on campus is spent in class. College town for sure. UT's administration is incredible - it is very open and very organized. The most recent controversy is the robberies geared toward Asians. There is an incredible amount of school pride.

Torry

The biggest complaint about UT is the way the school deals with the students. Every student is just a number and eid to the university as opposed to a valued student.

Marissa

I would change the lack of friendliness on campus. At other schools, everyone smiles when passing and there is a culture of general common courtesy. UT's administration seems to care very little for the students in comparison to other state universities. I got a parking ticket the first day I arrived as a freshman, for example, and wasn't given any slack for not being familiar with the signage. On-campus living is discouraged, for example, and food choices on campus are poor quality.

Jerry

people are impressed by UT and I love going to UT. I think the best part is the diversity and the pride longhorns have in their sports and school.

Rebecca

Great school in a great, city. UT is in the perfect size city for someone looking to experience both the college life (contained within campus and west campus) and have access to what a city has to offer (business, bars, etc). The students represent a wide variety of people. There are conservatives to liberal hippies to apathetics. There are academics, athletics, and everything in between. Basically you can find anything here to match your personality.

Andy

UT is an amazing university with enormous oppurtunties. The size of it really doesn't feel accurate. Once you involve yourself in organizations, the university seems so much smaller. You can find whatever you want at UT. Liberal, conservative, charity, spirit. The best part, regardless of your views, you are bound to find others that share them and even though others don't, UT is a school where we respect other views.

Jason

The best thing about UT is how much it has to offer. The school is big but we are very wealthy and use the money very wisely. There is literally a class, club or organization for anything and everything you could imagine. THis affords students the opportunity to do whatever they dream while in college.

Celina

I love the main mall and the activities that they organize there every day. I really like the fact that they put so much focus in the UGL (or FAC) study halls because that way students feel really comfortable with the new furniture and new open hours (24 hours) that the UGL offers.

Michael

The best thing about UT is the diversity on campus. While I feel most comfortable around a certain type of people, I am exposed to people from all walks of life, which is a great asset. This school, in my opinion, is the perfect size. I spend most of my time in class when I'm on campus.

Kendra

UT is a great place to go to school. Just make sure you find your niche. I found mine within my major (advertising, also a double major in journalism) and became very involved. This carves out a little community for you at such a large school.

Blake

I think UT is the right size, it is nice to go to a school where I feel like you can always meet new people and it doesn't feel like middle school or high school because you just see the same people all the time. I also think UT is probably the best college town because of great weather, great things to do outside in the great weather, amazing bar scene, lots of live music and events, and a booming young adult population. I feel like about 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the university has an insane amount of school pride while there is that small percent that doesn't really care that much.

Royce

I think the best thing about UT is the atmosphere. Texas is a very unique state. We're probably the most proud people in the nation, if not the world. On top of that, Austin is typically a liberal city, and many of the students are too. We're a very open school with pride that will outlast most of our lives. I think both kinda say a lot about us being very dedicated, interested, and unique students. Although, I can only talk about the students I interact with, students very involved in organizations, student representation, and their classes. Maybe not everyone is like that. Austin is also the "perfect" place for a college to be located. It is a very socially liberal town, with a lot to do. The weather is always very nice (at least for the heat ridden south).

Danielle

The best thing about UT is the open atmosphere that allows equal opportunities for all students, faculty, and staff. To many people, UT seems too large and unaccessable, but to me the size is just right. When I tell people I go to UT, they are almost always very impressed (except Aggies and Sooners of course). Most of my time spent on campus is either in class, the library, or in meetings for Student Government and various other things. The biggest controversy recently has been the tuition increase--however this is not the fault of the administration or student leaders. It stems from the lack of funding from the state legislature, and the administration is only doing what they must do in order to sustain the international prestige of this University. The Longhorn pride is so intense--I am genuinely offended if I hear ANYONE insult UT, Austin, or anything related to it.

Jordan

UT is a huge school in one of the best college cities in the US. We have a dedicated administration, in my opinion, that truly strives to make a University of Texas at Austin degree worth the same as a degree from the top institutions in the country. The student life has something for everyone. I think that UT is climbing among the best institutions in the country and will soon be near the top.

Daniel

UT is all around amazing. We are great in sports, academics, and it is really a great awakening into the real diverse world that we live in. It is so profoundly diverse, and you need just find your niche in the thousands of groups and organizations that exist on campus.

Bob

the school is huge but everyone seems to like it. austin is definitely a college town and 6th street is very popular once you turn 21. lot's of school pride and everyone goes to football games. there is a large liberal population on campus so beware

Devin

I am architecture student, thus I live life in my studio. It's a hell of school UT, and there are alot of great people, as well as the not so great people.

Charlie

great mix of excellent academics and social life

Christina

I am so so so proud to be a longhorn. I love wearing burnt orange and I love telling people I go to UT. My eyes water when the jets fly over the stadium at football games and I love the size of the school. It is an amazing feeling to be part of such a huge picture and I do not feel lost in the crowd. There are groups at UT that make the community smaller. Greek life at UT brings many students together and it is where I have found my best friends.

Kyle

UT is a great university that opens up an almost endless list of opportunities for its students. However, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. To become a student at UT you have to be independent and know that about yourself.

ana

the school is just the right size. It is big enough so everyone can find their own place. I spend most of my time in the Business School. Austin is not a college town full of amazing people and activities taht happens to host one of the best school in the nation. there is defenetly a lot of school pride you know VIVA the Longhorns!!. The experience that I will always remeber is walking on campus and seeing the mosd diverse crowd that I have seen in my life , trying to change the world by involving in different organizations such as Face Aids, Texas 4000, Panama brigades, etc.

Karen

The best thing about UT is that is really fun, we are excellent in most of our sports, but we have very high academic standards. The school is just the right size. Everyone wants to be a longhorn!!!!!!! I'm an engineering so i spend 99{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of my time in ECJ. The school pride is amazing. After all we are the BEST, how can you not be proud? UT football games are SOO fun.

Lauren

I am completely obsessed with UT. I couldn't be happier with my decision to go to school here, and I wouldn't change anything. UT is big, but it isn't too big because people are able to find their niche very easily. There is SO much school pride at UT, despite the school not being a true "college town." I love that I can spend as much time as I want on and around campus, or go out in Austin and experience real city life as well. UT is a public university with amazing athletics in every areas: football, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and basketball is improving! The only bad thing about UT that I think is more a problem with Austin than the school is safety. I am always a little scared to walk alone anywhere, especially with all the robberies that have been occurring lately.

Drew

The best part of UT are the football games in the fall. UT is a football school and everything stops for the games on saturdays. My best experience was going to the Rose Bowl to watch the National Championship game. Nothing will ever top that.

Allison

I love Austin because it is a big town with a small town feel. Everyone supports local artists and businesses and is very welcoming. It is an amazing city to live in and I love that UT embraces that feel.

Jordan

Here is something unusual about UT: in a place with so many opportunities, there is nobody to tell you how to "get there"- nobody gives you a break, and nobody does you any favors. AKA- the rules will not be bent for you. You have to find your own way in a school this big.

Edlin

In the midst of my search for my major, I tried out quite a few classes. One of the things I have realized is some disciplines emphasize social justice and others do not even touch it. As such a powerful institution, we should be educating some of the most knowledgeable people but who are also considerate of their fellow citizens. I feel UT should offer some social justice class and make it mandatory to everyone. Yes, mandatory. But the kicker would the classes need to be less that 50 people each so as to facilitate discussion and proper in depth self-exploration. It could possibly extend to 2 classes, one with issues of concern within the US and the other having to deal with international aspects. I think this would help UT in the long run because it would not only get more students thinking about their actions but also make the university noticeable in producing ethical citizens.

Ryan

I think UT should give students more ways to pick their major. Let them get a better taste of each major, since the first few classes a student don't equate to what the major is like.

Joe

The best thing about UT is you can always find a group of people with common interests. It has great academics and provides for a great social life. Austin is a great city to live in, and UT does so much for the community. There is a ton of school pride, especially with regards to football.

Anne

UT is a campus filled with energy. Students on campus are very involved in organizations, and various causes are continually being promoted on the campus around the clock. It is a large school, but this allows for unique interactions with different people every day. I love the diversity on campus.

Evan

UT is a big school, but the best thing about it is there are so many great organizations to get involved in, which makes it seem a lot smaller.

Robin

Awesome place. I think is one of the top 5 places to go to school, comparable only to stanford and U of M. It big, very diverse, great academic program, great athletic program and its in a great city. It has a lot of traditions and to put it in a few words, what starts here.. changes the world.

Amanda

UT's campus has a lot to offer. You just have to be motivated and make the effort to take advantage of it. It's harder when you live off campus, like I do/did in the Castilian. As much as I liked my dorm, I wasn't in the middle of campus and I was always just a bit lazy. Of course, I made a great group of friends from my dorm. There are a lot of events that go on every week, with flyers marketing them. Make an effort now and then to read and look at one - I did. And the events are really great. Texas Revue in the spring is really fun to go to. The drag is really great, but you do get tired of it after one Semester. Also, make sure you have pockets of cash. Eating out as a student is really appealing and the Drag has a lot to offer, but that money adds up at the end of the week, and the month...and before you know it $100 is down the drain and you don't know how. So when you go into a restaurant and see a table of people your age all ordering water, they are definitely college students. My friends and I started spending a lot of time on congress, going up that hill. There are a lot of funky little shops. It's just nice way to kill a quiet, calm, and gorgeous evening.

Cameron

UT has lots of people and lots of opportunities. Those who are go-getters, ambitious, and intentional about taking advantages of resources around them succeed. However, I think there are also those who feel overwhelmed and lost by the mass of information. I understand that Dean Woodruff is placing efforts toward making smaller communities for the undergraduate experience, and I hope that implements of this cause will come soon. Most every student that gets into UT has great potential at succeeding as students and leaders, but some may need help in navigating through all the information and operations at UT to reach their potential.

Mary

The best thing about UT is that you can do anything here. You have a world class campus with extraordinary faculty and resources, but also some of the best parties in the US! Also, Austin is a both an old and a metrpolitan city, so there are so many different kinds of things to do. Best of all, Austin is a very active place. There are always free events or 5ks or art shows or something going on.

Jeremy

Very large college; people usually think highly of UT engineering; most of my time is spent in Jester; controversy - approval of the +/- grading; a lot of school pride

piper

it's a large school and not meant for everyone. if you're looking for school pride and being part of something, this is the school for you.

Charlie

The best thing to do here at UT is to go out and try out the different restaurants. The campus is quite pretty. the buildings are aesthetically pleasing.

Sarah

My department does not do enough to recognize undergraduates in the Art History department. The department focuses too much on its graduate students, thus it's undergraduate program becomes less competitive. Each year is different. For the first two years of my college career, I spent most of my time in the ART building, working in the painting studio. For the next two years, I've spent most of my time in the Fine Arts Library, researching. This past semester, I have spent a great deal in the business school. The administration within the College of Fine Arts (I don't have much interaction with other departments) is great! The Dean of Student Affairs is attentive and dedicated to her job. It's been tough not having a permanent Dean of College Of Fine Arts for the past two years, but he's finally here, and here to stay. For me, I have a lot of "college" and university pride. Unlike other schools, UT offers training in highly specified areas. As a freshmen, you have many options, however, you have to seek them out. My advice to all freshmen would be to not take any of your professors and resources for granted. Ask much of your professors. Do not expect things to "magically" happen. You have to work for it.
