Get involved with student activities, but don?t over commit. Make the most out of your experience. Make time to have fun, but don?t let it get in the way of your studies. Apply to as many schools as possible, not just your first pick school. Then research everything possible about the school and workout how much it is going to cost, how much financial aid you will recieve, and way your options.

Parents: although you may be iffy about letting your child go away for college (instead of going to a college closest to home), seriously consider it and give him/her the opportunity. Be as supportive as possible and find a way to make it happen. Do not deny your child an education they feel will work best for them. If it looks impossible, find the best solution that will work for both of you. Students: do those scholarship applications! There is plenty of money out there; you just need to get on the ball and do your research. Even if you feel you do not have a chance, you never know and it doesn't hurt to try. Find the balance between your social life and your personal life (whether it be friends, family, studies, work, etc.) Do the best you can and take opportunities when they present themselves. Also, build connections with certain people because sometimes it's not what you know but who you know. Most importantly, live college life to the fullest! Make the best of it and cherish those memories and people that have made it happen for you!

Parents and students need to understand that the key in finding the right college or university for their student is by research. If you do not research the college or university that the student would like to attend or its qualifications, time and money is being wasted. The student should take the innitiative and take it upon themselves to find the right school and their choice of study. When this is done that is when the student's college experience is more appreciated and valued. Being a student I know that researching different schools and programs of my interest can become difficult and frustrating. But the reward at the end and the feeling of success is totally worth it.

Jennifer

Talk to someone that already goes to that college, they will give you honest and real answers to many of your questions. Also, take tours of the campus and see the facilities they have to offer. The main thing I found to help me is to ask questions. It is very important for the student to be responsible for their own education so he/she can have the best possible.

Find a school that offers the major you want to take. Go to a university that you will be comfortable with, financially. College years are supposed to be the best years of your life, don't waste them going to a school you hate, or that doesn't offer your major. Have fun while your in college; to ensure this pick the right school, but don't party too hard! Keep studying!

Naila

The advice that I would give to parents and students is to find a school that you feel comfortable going to and don't base it on factors such as size or sports programs, make sure it fits you as an individual. The choice should be easy if you make a check list of characteristics that you would like to have in a university. Also find a university where you feel safe and can interact freely and meet new people because that is one of the most rewarding parts of college.

hana

Don't pick the "cool" college. Pick the one that you can afford, hs what you want, and will make you happy in the long run

Brittany

When looking for the right school make sure you do alot of research into that school. Make sure it has clubs, sports, or your major there. One big thing that will help you find the right school is to go on a campus tour so you can see it first hand. When going on a tour try to go during fall or spring not during the summer cause the campus is different. When you get the the college of your choice make the best of it get involved in everything that interest you. Being part of a fraternity or sorority is also a very good way to get involved on and off campus. When you get involved in stuff on campus it makes it easier to make friends. Just enjoy college and work hard!

My advice to parents and students about finidng the right college and making the most of it would probably be, to do it for yourself. Do not choose a school just because your best friend is going to that particular one or because of the social scene or football team. I chose my school based on what they had to offer, the classroom sizes, rating of the professors, and how comfortable I would feel living there and being away from home. I would also say to consider the different offers, not just the first one you've received. Look into the different schools and see what they have to offer, especially toward your field of study. For making the most of the college experience, I would again say, do it for yourself. Go out and see what clubs or societies the school offers and what may interest you the most. Joining something whether it be greek life, SGA, orientation leader, or just a campus activity board, putting yourself out there and getting involved helps you to grow in so many ways. You can only get out of what you put in and it all starts with your choice.

Chasidy

Make sure that you visit each school before you enroll. You can learn a lot about a school by just visiting and going for orientation. Do not be afraid to ask questions, you want to make sure you are getting what you want. Get out there and meet new people. Do not expect others to come find you, make the most of your situation and go to events that you think you will enjoy. If you live on campus, find out who lives next to you and go to the events your dorm is holding. You can make great friends that way. Find out what is going on on-campus for free before you try to go off-campus and have to pay money. Love your school, and college will be the best experience.

Madeline

make sure that this is what your child wants, or else they wont put the effort into it. and make sure that your child has some sort of a plan, or else they'll just get lost in college and fall behind.

Latasha

Don't settle! find a college or school that gives you everything that you want. Great sense of pride, intelligent, helpful professors, wide range of both academics and athletics, accessibility to resources and above all a place you see yourself growing in!

Dawn

Be to go to a college that you feel comfortable in. That includes the campus and the surrounding city. If your not comfortable then you might not break out of your box and enjoy everything that your college has to offer.

Kathleen

Visit a lot of different universities to get a feel for what fits you best. A college may look one way on it's website but can be completely different in person! So make sure to plan a bunch of college tours and get as much information as you can, you'll be glad you did! The best decision I made was to visit schools, the school I thought was my dream school turned out to be anything but. After touring UWF I found a school that made me feel at home, if I hadn't visited this school who knows where I would have ended up!

Jordan

Research all of your options and visit all of the schools your considering. See if you like the people, the environment and the school in general. All those things will affect your overall hapiness in college. Remember that your going to school to learn and to get a higher education so that you will be successful in life. It's ok to have fun, but remember your goals.

Alisha

When trying to find the right college, the best thing to do is research the college and schedule a campus tour. Looking at a brochure or a website is NOT enough. A campus tour allows one to get a feel of the campus. Do your research! Try to get in touch with students whom already attend the school. Check its academic background, affordability, and location. Make sure the school is right for you. To make the best of college do the following: work hard, stay focused, have fun, and don't forget the reason you're in college.

Mark

Parents: Be a part of the college selection process and do not dictate, because your child will be taking the classes and living at the city. Communication is the biggest factor because you do not want your child to be miserable for a year at a college, then possibley drop out. Take time to research and take campus visits. Learn to let go and teach your child how to make their own decisions concerning money, college activities, and residence. Your child's college experience will become better once you have planned everything with your child before the first day of college begins. Students: Listen to your parents and be realistic. Yes, choosing a college because of the football team or friends will be a factor, but it all comes down to the education and money. Your parents may be paying for tuition, books, housing, and other expenses and if it means to stay home, then stay home. There is nothing wrong with living with your parents during college. Trust me, free rent, utilities, and food makes college life much easier. The opportunities and activities will come to you so be patient and plan ahead including all the expenses.

Cortney

The advice I would give to parents about looking for the perfect school for their children would be to listen to your child. They will know what school they feel comfortable at and that is what is most important no matter how far away it may be from home. I would also advise the parents to check into the security available on campus. They could also look into the student/professor ratio because that makes a big difference in how their child learns. I would tell the students to base their decision on how they feel about the school and campus. I would also tell the student to not pick a school just because their friends are going to it or because it is a big party school because college is not about the parties. I would advise them to choose a school based on their major. I would also tell them to get involved in campus activities because it will make their college experience that much better.

Kami

Financial aid, dorms, school life, transportation, and degrees are all things you should consider when choosing a college. Parents, remember; it's okay to let go and allow your child to experience the real life, even if its not in your hometown. Students, remember that your parents are going through a hard time. They're losing something that has been their life for the past 18 years. Don't forget to call home often, they miss you and even hearing your voice will make them feel 10 times better. As far as making the most out of your college experience, I say this; GET INVOLVED! Whether you join a sorority, fraternity, student government, drama, band, art club, computer club, gaming club, whatever it is, get involved. You can only expect to get out of college what you put in it. You will find that once you are involved, you may do better in your classes. Have a lot of school spirit. Even if your school doesn't have a football team (like mine) you can still cheer them on in other sports. Do whatever it takes to have an enjoyable college experience. Trust me, it goes by WAY too fast!

Cortney

I would tell parents to let their children pick the school that they want to go to because if they are attending a college that they do not like, they will hate it. The student will not perform as they should or as they could. I would tell the student searching for a college to look at the activities going on at the school. They should also search for a school that is right for their intended major. They should not base their decision on where their friends are going. College is the best place to make new friends and have a great time getting an education. I would tell the student to get involved in the college community because it will make their college experience a lot more fulfilling.

Lauren

Consider the college you choose carefully. Think about the area, and talk to many people that go to the school. Don't move somewhere that you don't know anything about. Once you get into college have fun, but remember why you are there.

Aubry

Go visit the campus. Set up an appointment to meet with the head of whatever program or study field of interest. Get a tour of the facilities. Try the food (just incase). Look over the class lists for your major and make sure they sound interesting to you. Enjoy the school you pick!

Elizabeth

Don't let your students put it off, the longer you wait the harder it is to start back up and do a good job. Your education is the best gift you can give yourself. If you have to flip burgers so you can live in a decent place while you're going to school, do it, it's all worth it in the end. Life's too short to put your education on hold.

Danielle

College is for students. Choose a place that makes you happy, not one that pleases someone else. You will become your own person, find your own way of doing things, and experience new ideas and opinions. Your choice of where to go to college will influence the rest of your life. No one should make the choice for you. Remember that it's okay to ask for help. The faculty and staff will be there to help you, and your fellow students can be great resources. But don't believe everything people say! Doing research on your own will help you make the decision that's best for you. Have fun! College is one of the most amazing things you will ever experience. Never neglect your school work, and do whatever the professor suggests you to do to prepare for class, but don't forget to leave your room! There are so many fun things to do in the world and here's your chance to try them! Most of all, RELAX! You've got four years to figure out what you want from the world. Don't be afraid to change anything!

Adrian

Don't always go with the first college that interest you. Get started early, take your time, and visit as many colleges as possible to get a feel of the college life.
