University of Arizona Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Kevin

The academics is ok, depends on your study habits and your class ethic. Classes can be either really boring (lectures) or really ineresting (mainly small classes). Great programs all around though.

Joe

It is tough to get into the classes you want. There general curriculum fills up fast. Unless you are taking a class in business or science, then the school is a cakewalk. I do not need to study that often and my grades are better then most. I have taken some weird classes here that i have found particularly intriguing. These include wildfire management and the study of life in the universe.

Kevin

gen ed's are huge classes and sucks, but classes get better when you take you major classes.

Jesse

The academics are phenomenal, if you want to be successful, you come to the U of A to do it.

NIck

Most of my professors know my name and know me relatively well. My favorite class is architecture because i get to go to that class and work on projects and its pretty relaxed. My least favorite class is physics because i don't like my teachers very much and the material is very confusing. Class participation here is decent-students don't usually go to lectures but for regular classes students usually go. My major is architecture and i love all my classes that are involved with it and i like my teachers. The academic requirements aren't too bad but classes still aren't too easy.

Matt

Arizona challenges you, your professors are there to push you. If you want your degree to mean something, come to u of a. The teachers explain things thoroughly and are usually willing to answer questions in office hours.

Dustin

Not going to lie, a lot of the freshmen at the U of A make you wonder how they got into a University at all, but as you get higher up the IQ rises as well. We like to have fun, but we do work too.

Travis

I hate English classes, the essays they make you write are way too structured. They need to give students more freedom when writing papers. I enjoy the business classes as I feel they are good preparation for the real world, except for MIS. That class is pointless. Students tend to do their homework late at night, we have too much other stuff going on during the day. Not much homework gets done on the weekends because of partying and sporting events. ***The best advice I can give about achieving better grades in class is to meet with your professors outside of class.*** Especially in english class, ALWAYS have your english teacher proofread your essay before you turn it in. I guarantee you will get a better grade everytime. The only important education is the classes geared toward your major, the other classes just provide necessary/unnecessary information.

Chris

there are some classes that are really big but many of the classes are the perfect size.

Jordan

The academics, as far as freshman year goes, aren't too bad. I would say it was what was expected of college; few exams, more papers. But if you just go to class and pay attention, with a little bit of work you should do very well.

Alex

My professors try their best to learn my name. My favorite class is planetary science and my least favorite is English. Students study very often and class participation is very common. Arizona students have intellectual conversation outside of class very frequently. Students are competitive. The most unique class I've taken is planetary science because the professor is amazing. My department is science and they are very informative and keep you in the circle. I don't spend much time with professors outside of class but they're available. Arizona's academic requirements are tough but manageable. The education is geared toward getting a job.

Dan

Academics at Arizona seem decent but not great. Most classes are structured with several large lectures punctuated by a small section meeting. In these section meetings, the TA's try to know you on a personal level. They always offer office hours if you need outside help.

brian

are extremely cumpettitive

Andru

It all depends what department you are in. Im in the engineering department which has extremely intelligent people so that spoils me. However when i have to fullfill my general education requirement I see the other side of the spectrum when I am surrounded by idiots and taught by some hippy woman about the evils of capitalism. I guess every school has their gen-eds, but arizonas can be quite painfull, they should have an IQ test that automaticaly gets you out of those.

Tom

My favorite class is social issues in America. It is cool because everything we talk about is relevant to college life.

Jeff

classes are pretty big and they are challenging but not to difficult at the same time

Steven

The lecture classes are really big and it is hard to go to class because you wonder what the point of going to class is. The math classes are hard as fuck and the gen ed's are extremely liberal.

Jeff

My favorite class would be my global change class.

Thomas

Arizona is a competitive environment, for instance. In order to get into the business program you have to have a high end GPA. Other students that want to get in will also be shooting for the same GPA. The only real way to guarantee a spot is to be at the top of the chain.

David

good

Lorie

Class is always the most fun part of my day. Yea sometimes exams and projects can be stressful but I consider myself lucky. It can be difficult at times managing my time between schoolwork, liesure activities, and real work.

jon

classes aint bad they take up a lot of time though

Carson

A lot of professors do go out of their way to try to learn everyones name, even in large discussions, and most classes I have taken, participation is more than reccomended.

Stephen

As a psychology major I have taken criticism for going to the U of A and for being a psych major. I have learned that both of these stereotypes are incorrect though as many of my upper division class are extremely difficult. Majority of the big lectures have usually 3-4 tests and maybe a paper or two throughout the semester. Because of this structure, I think the biggest thing I learned was to know when these are coming up and make sure to prepare in advance for these bigger assignments/ tests. I do not typically meet with professors outside of class, although the one class I did it was extremely beneficial, so I would definitely recommend it.

Maggie

I am a psych. major - along with about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the University. The major is huge - and the department could use a lot more staff. Registration for classes, and class availability is very difficult. In my opinion, students are always studying. Atleast I know I am. I have the option of getting to know my professor in each one of my classes, so do all the students - it is up to them whether or not they take the opportunity to get to know them. The classes the psych. dept. offers are very interesting. I will be taking a violence and youth class next semester I am looking forward to. My abnormal psych teacher is very intelligent/experienced - a very well known expert in many fields. Having a teacher who has the option to have a real carreer as an expert psychologist, and instead chooses to teach - is rewarding, I think. I think Arizona's Academics are strong - I would say most people feel this way about Arizona, including and non-students.

Sarah

For the most part Arizona has average academics. Getting my minor in buisness i was able to see how competetive that school is. It is very difficult to get into a specific major and everyone is trying to get the best grade possible. Everyone i know studies every day. In my sorority we pride ourselves in having the highest GPA on campus and we all do our part to keep that. Im also apart of the honors program and taking honors classes i can see an obvious difference becuase teachers are alot more personal and really care about each student suceeding in their course. For the most part, all of the General Education classes are not too difficult and I have walked away with basic backround information.

Kendall

the math department here sucks. i took it at pima with a professor who teaches at the U of A but the way the course is set up it makes it easier to succeed if you are working hard.

Scott

Classes vary in size, lots of big lectures and then some smaller discussion groups. Flexible about switching between majors. Good study environment at the library if you need it.

Connie

Arizona gets a bad rap for being very easy. Classes can be very difficult. My one complaint is the amount of teachers with strong accents. Sometimes it can be very tough to understand my professors.

Mike

I know my professors names and most of them know mine with the exception of some of my huge lecture classes, but even with those i know the TAs that lead the smaller discussion sections. The gen ed classes seem boring in description but they actually are extremely interesting and are some of the better classes I've taken so far. The english and math departments are terrible here though.

Betty

Some classes are large lectures but have small discussion classes on days later in the week. Most of the classes you take are less then 25 students. Students study a lot and it is a smart idea to go to office hours because the teacher will answer any questions you have and help with homework and studying for tests.

Michelle

Academics here are generally great! I greatly enjoy all of the science classes! The general education classes are great too. I hate the math department, very few of the teachers speak Englis well. Most students that I have classes with are planning on going on to graduate school, which causes a competitive environment. I like this because it challenges me to do good. The professors are, for the most part, good. In big lecctures it is hard to get personal with he students, but most professors do what they can.

Dianne

The professors for the most part are very willing to help students who go to their office hours. U of A offers a diverse selection of classes to choose from.

Christina

I'm not gonna lie, most of the professors I've had haven't been that great. I used to be a Physiology major and therefore took all the science lectures. The science teachers are not at U of A to teach, they are at U of A to research, teaching is just part of their requirement to research, since U of A is one of the top schools for research. I've had multiple sources (counselors included) telling me to take certain classes outside of U of A because of the teachers. However, I've heard that once you get into the upper divisions that are part of your major things change.

Jesse

some majors are competitive some are not anyone can finda degree to fit them

John

Tons of resources provided for students especially at freshman and sophomore levels, including but not limited to teacher's office hours, tutoring, 3rd party tutoring (personal tutors), past test archives, etc. The library is open 24 hrs during the week and especially in the underground (ILC) there is always people in there doing work, I honestly see more people in the ILC that I know than I do randomly when walking across campus. Also plenty of resources available for finding a job including resume workshops, career fairs, listservs with job opportunities being forwarded and more.

Elizabeth

I have had some great teachers in the college of Engineering. In particular, Dr Blowers, a chemical engineering professor, explains topics clearly and is always available for questions. He is also a great advisor.

Molly

Most of my classes are large, except my Spanish classes. All of my science classes are very hard, and the test averages are very low. Students are competitive for grades, scholarships, club membership, and internships. I really like the Biology dept. The advisers are great and smart. Some profs go above and beyond in their classes, like Dr. McCarthy who teaches an astronomy class. He invited students to his own house to see the stars more clearly. As of now, my education seems to be mostly about learning for its own sake, and does not have as much practical application as I'd like.

Chris

The academics are very important and all of the professors are extremely good. I have taken great classes with great professors. There are many students at The University of Arizona that don't want to do the work and others that excel extremely. I loved the class called Structure of Mind and Behavior.

amanda

Professors and assitants of the university of arizona are dedicated to reaching every student. language courses, english, and math are usually taken in smaller classes of 20-50 students and you have class a minimum of three days a week. In larger lecture type classes most professors have a discussion group and enforce smaller group projects and presentations. Every teacher, administrator, and student involved in leadership is required to have scheduled weekly office hours. Tutoring centers from math, science, and workshop writing centers for english are also available by appointment and for free to students.

lauren

I know my professor's names and I do not feel uncomfortable or any problem asking for help. The main issue is the General Education courses. Many of them are bogus and irrelevent. They are mainly there to take up space and require more money.

Kelsey

Class sizes can vary extremely. Usually most classes for freshman and sophomores are bigger except for English, and then the older you get and the more narrowed down your studies the smaller your classes are. There is a really diverse selection of classes to take to help you find your real interests. There are all sorts of resources on and off campus to help you succeed in your classes.

Kaitlin

The University of Arizona prides itself on academics. With 98{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our proffesors in possesion of a PHD, the UA is extremely dedicated to providing a quality education to its stuedents. The UA is among some the top schools in the nation such as Berkley, Virginia and Stanford. The variety of available classes is incredible and gives every student the opportunity to broaden his or her education. Most professors are happy to help you succeed in the best way possible. The students at the UA are competetive which creates a higher academic standard at the university.

Krista

The most unique class I have taken is a Gender in Contemporary Societies class. The class is very interesting and focuses on diversity and a range of topics from transvestites and transgenders to the incorporation of sexism and the media.

Dance

Students are competitive. I have gone to see teachers after class. They are always very welcoming. No complaints about the academics yet.

Deven

I like the diversity of classes. I have 500 person lectures but then i also have classes that have about 15 students where you really get to know everyone, including the teacher. Any psychology class is amazing. Math is ridiculously hard at Arizona. i dont recommend taking it at the UofA. go to a community college. class participation is important in smaller class settings.

Alyssa

So far, I have liked all of my classes. I am learning a lot; the classes are definitely difficult. The proffessors always make me feel welcome in their office hours. Most of them are very helpful and want us to succeed.

Kendal

We are known as the "real" college in Arizona. We are sought after by many out of state people and whom ever comes here loves this school.

Jessica

If you do your homework on classes, you'll be able to find less difficult and worthwhile topics for gen ed requirements. As for major requirements, you may be up for a challenge, but nothing that you'll feel was a waste of your time. The business school especially, is great with directing their students toward careers.

Lauren

Academics are challenging but good grades are absolutely obtainable if you focus. Prof. Delaney is amazing. She teaches an INDV/ Psych class that is called Structure: Mind and Behavior. Huge lecture but she makes it really fun!!! There are really smart students at the UofA but I haven't met any who are arrogant about it. They are all really well-rounded.
