University of Arkansas Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Brittany

The classes are so big and the classes that are small your teacher still doesn't care enough to learn your name. But it doesn't really matter because I don't care enough to learn their name. I just try to get the best grade I can. I don't like how everything is all tests. Not everyone is a good test taker, so I don't think its fair.

Meagan

Being a Theater major I have very small classes and a lot of one on one with the teachers and I love it. I really feel like the professors are there whenever you need them and always ready to help out. Even in my gen ed classes I feel like they are pretty interesting and you can always email your professors about problems. Of course most of them don't know your name but if you make an effort they will. And I have no doubt that I won't have a problem getting a decent job after graduation.

Alex

At the Walton College of Business we have many close knit groups of students. Most professors know your name if it isn't an auditorium class. Most WCOB classes are lectures with slides. The communications classes I have taken are much more hands on. Every teacher learned my name and they were a lot more interactive and fun.

Katie

The academics at Arkansas are very challenging, but will ultimately teach you everything you need to know. With a wide range of class sizes the experience in every class will be different. Professors truely care about your education and love meeting and getting to know their students.

Charlie

There are a lot of opportunities to succeed at Arkansas! A great variety of classes.

ashley

Some professors know my name. usually the ones from smaller classes do. My favorite teacher is Larry Aslin. he is with the UofA Speech Hearing Clinic. He is an awesome teacher! he makes class fun because he is so animated. It's definitely easy to go to his class when it's at 9:30. I try to participate in class because I know I am more likely to get bumped up a grade if I am borderline if the teacher recognizes that I attend class and participate.

Shawn

The best classes are the ones the teacher's are excited about teaching, esp. if you like the subject. For instance, my first day of Developmental Psych, my teacher told us that she had fought to teach that class, despite the hated early hour, and it was her focus when studying psych. But not all teachers are that forward. Most are passionate about the class they teach, though. Classes tend to be bigger, so unless you make an effort to know the teacher, they won't know you outside of class. The T.A.s usually get to know you, though. Arkansas students aren't dumb, there are intellectual conversations outside of class, it just depends on who you're talking to. Students aren't really competitive, though. No time is spent outside of class w/ a professor, unless it's to make up a test. The math department here is absolutely terrible. The majority of the classes are done on the computer, and the system for it is pretty bad.

Kelsey

Class size is sometimes to big which makes it hard to get to know the teachers. Also that the teachers seem less eager to help students out when class size is larger.

Carly

I know all of my professor's name and they have all worked hard to try and learn mine. My favorite class right now is sociology. I'm very interested in this subject and i really like my professor. Class participatioin usually isn't that common. Most people never really want to speak up if they have a question.

Whitney

Class participation isn't as common as I thought it would be, but that may just be because these are mostly core classes and not many people are passionate about them as they would be in a class about their field of study. I think that it's crazy that I took a class and my last test was solely concerned with different types of primates (Bio. Antrho.).

Katie

The classes are generally small, and the teachers are very friendly!

Caitlin

I think some teachers are better than others, but overall the academic environment is very conducive.

Ashley

The academics can be as hard or as easy as you make it. If you want, you can skim by with an easy major(although i dont know how well that will help your future), but you can also really push yourself and take some challenging classes.

Emily

Academics at Arkansas i think are a little harder than everyone thinks. I am a very intelligent student, but even I dont make all A's. My opinion on the professors are split because I have had some really great one's who will work with you and help you succeed and I have had some really bad one's who I feel think its necessary for some to fail. I dont think the education is geared toward getting a job here, I feel its only to learn the subjects.

Melodie

Most of my professors know my name. I have never taken a class larger than 150+ people. I have only had one bad professor and that was in modular math.

Mallory

I am an Elementary Education teacher so I love all the Education classes. The teachers are great. I HATE it when teachers do not have power points and they just talk for hours. I am more hands on so i hate that.

Sarah

I know that i have a few professors that know my name especially in my smaller classes. my education classes are my favorite and my chemistry class is my least favorite. I notice class participation in all of my classes, and i try to be part of it as much as possible.

Amanda

in my specific college within the U of A (Agriculture), the professors do know everyone's names. In core classes however, that usually isn't the case unless you take them time to stay after class to ask questions, etc. Most teachers assume you are in college to get a good job and make money and gear class towards helping you know what you need for your career (or at least the topic of that class). The academic requirements are reachable and most classes are lecture and some class interaction but not much.

Brett

1. My proffessors don't know my name- all my classes are auditorium sized, 200 or more people 2. my favorite class is biology 3. Least favorite class is biology lab, it is very unorganized 4. Not in the big classes 5. yes 6. yes, not as much as at some schools, but all my firends have excellent grades 7. anthropolgy 8. nursing, i will apply to nursing school after my sophemore year, it is VERY competitive to get into 9. no 10. they are okay 11. definatly towards a job, we are a major bussiness school

Samantha

Going to the University of Arkansas has allowed me to really get to know my professors through various opportunitites. The University is also very generous when it come to scholarships and also had 3 students who were Truman Scholar finalists. One student won the Truman scholarship.

Andy

At Arkansas, there are classes for just about anything imaginable! I have kept in close contact with all my professors through email, and they all care about their students. Class participation depends on the size of the class. In large classes (around 300 people) it would get hectic if everyone talked, but asking questions are encouraged. In smaller classes we all put in out 2 cents about the topic. All our acedemic programs are very competitive. When you have to have a better GPA then the person sitting next to you to get into the same program, you know better than to not fool around! I am a pre-nursing student and MUST keep my grades up, because there are students with 4.0 out there wanting the same entry into the nursing school as I do! The most unique class I have taken would definately be scube diving. My least favorite class so far has been Western Civ I, which wasn't actually that bad.

Meagan

My professors know my name and class participation is a must.

Stefanie

I know some of my professors names. I like most of my classes. Fundamentals of Communication is dumb. I love my professor but the class is stupid. I think people talking about important stuff out side of class. I don't spend time with my professors outside of class. I think it is a good balance between learning and getting a job.

Whitney

The University of Arkansas has great teacher who really care about your future.

Jamie

I do wish that some of the classes were smaller or if the class is larger that the teachers wouldn't try to draw attention to a particular student.

Lauren

Like I said the nursing school is not very good, I just started and have wanted to transfer but can't. Other than that I think the academics are very competitive and most of the teachers are good teachers who know alot.

Bethany

I have fairly big classes this semester. All but one of my professors are great! I am more concerned with sports than having intellectual conversations outside of class

Kristen

Currently I have 2 professors this semester and neither of them know my name, but that is because they are in very large lecture halls. Over the 2 semesters I have been here I've had several TA's and they know my name, because generally those classes are smaller and I go and ask questions during office hours. My favorite class was Cultural Anthropology, because it opened my eyes up to how other people live and that you shouldn't judge a person by thier culture. In both large and big classes, class participation is common. I've noticed students in the honors program are very competive about grades, but it varies in regular classes. Arkansas' academic requirments are not hard to be met. Basically if people stay focused and get their work done as well as don't change their major a lot they will finish in 4 years. I personally feel the education you recieve here is what you make of it. People have to be self motivated to do the work and go to class. No one is holding your hand or sending you e-mail telling you to show up for class an do your work. This is a big school if you don't do your work and don't go to class no one cares, you'll probably just gulide by.

Amy

All of my professors know my name and they stop to say hello outside of a classroom setting. Students study quite often, especially around the midterm and finals periods. I'm an Agriculture Business major who is focusing on a Pre Law emphasis.

Kara

It's well rounded. There are classes for everything! your teachers will know you. The teachers are nice and want to help you. I know I will feel prepared to do my job well when I get out into the work area.

Juliana

The learning enviornment is pretty inspiring around here. Most classes the student to teacher ratio is at a really good number. There are only a few big lecture classes. They aren't too bad, but it's harder to ask questions in those classes.

Robyn

I was surprised when most of my classes never toped 100, I just kind of figured they would be that big because of how big the school is. I'm glad they aren't that big because I'm used to having 20 people at the most.

Brittany

Some of my classes at Fayetteville have been large lecture classes where the teacher has no idea who I am, but I have also taken honors classes where the teacher always notices when I am not in class. The honors classes are definately my favorite, even though they are considerably harder. I feel as if I make a better connection with the professor, as well as the students in my classes, in a smaller setting. I have to study an extremely large amount compared to a lot of my friends. Because I am taking honors classes, I always have homework. Students are very competitive, especially in the harder majors. Outside of class, there are plenty of opportunities to discuss your ideas and theories about anything you desire.

Cameron

Maybe it's because I'm still a freshman, but I feel like I've only had a few REAL professors. I've only had one that made a real impact on me so far, Dr. Erickson. I took her Cultural Anthropology class and it definitely made an impression on me. She is amazing!

Sydney

At the University of Arkansas the professors try to get to know each student and find a way to help them if they have any questions or suggestions for their teaching styles. They are very friendly and try to teach by their syllabus and text books.

Brittany

Some of my professors know my name, but this semester, they should definitely be doing a better job considering the classes are much smaller since I am a senior and I have been around 4 years now. My least favorite class is Sports Information. Sounds like it should be interesting but it is not at all. I have a terrible teacher who has never taught before and he just stands in front of the class and rants about what he does in his job.

Emily

I am a communications major and I feel my classes are moderate and of a good size.

Taylor

Some of the professors that have large class sizes don't know your name, but that is understandable with the class sizes being so large

Cory

Favorite class- Busines Law Least Favorite- Financial Resources

Emma

A few of my professors know my name, but I am in a couple of large classes, so I don't expect them to remember me. MY favorite class is Anthropology. Mr. Nolan is an amazing teacher. I feel that he gets the point across to all 300 students every class, which is a hard thing to do.

Daniel

Most of my professors know my name, and if they don't, graduate assistants do. Many of my classes are less than 30 people, in fact, all except one large lecture class. My favorite class is Creative Writing, as it is a workshop based course where all we do is write. My least favorite class is Spanish Conversation and Composition because it is IMPOSSIBLE! I'm in the Honors college so all I really here are pretty intellectual(nerdy) conversations outside of my classes but it's pretty hard to stay away from sports-related topics as that is an extremely important aspect of the University. My academic requirements are very difficult. My liberal arts degree requires a large amount of classes from a large amount of fields of studies. My education is more geared towards just learning as I'm not really in any skill-based classes, but my roommates education seems job-based as he is in the Business school.

Paige

Most professors know my name, but some do not. Those that do usually it is because the class is smaller. The larger ones it is way to hard. My favorite class so far has been Intro. to Education. I have been able to go to other elementary, middle, and high school classrooms to observe the teachers. It has been great to see what i need to do for my future classroom. I live in the honors dorm so student study alot in my dorm facility, but in other dorms students are crazy and tend to slack off. it also does depend on the student themselves though. Student in bigger classes do not normally attend, but those in smaller classes do. Also if the class is hard they attend and those that are easy students do not attend alot. (Only on test days). I never spend time with my professors outside of class, thats just me, other students do. I am currently in the Education Department, majoring in Early Childhood Education. I love kids and plan on teacher for my career! My major requires students to receive a Masters. It is a 5 year programs, which i love, because i probably would not come back to school to get a Masters.

Bethany

Most professors have made an effort to know students name in my experience. Study time varies from student to student.

Tiffany

My favorite class was my government class. My teacher was so funny and so much fun. She was young and leniant and knew we were all trying our hardest. She didnt know me by name, but i held her in the highest respect.

Alex

lecture classes are pretty easy. Smaller classes are good and teachers know me.

Amber

some of them do. communications

stephanie

Yes

Dylan

Most of my classes are actually pretty small! My Spanish classes have only about 20 people in them!

Claire

Professors do tend to know my name. I am in lots of honors classes, and they tend to be smaller, which is nice. That way you can build better relationships with your teachers. One of my favorite classes has been Psychology, because even though it doesn't apply to my major, it's really interesting stuff. My least favorite class was Business Foundations, we had to do a dumb simulation where you forecasted for a company and competed against all the other companies in your class. A lot of people get into big study groups in the business school right before tests, we have an honors study lab for the honors students. In my classes participation is pretty necessary. The only class I have ever skipped is music lecture, just because it is soo easy. I can't make myself sit through the lecture. I don't know if we have intellectual conversations outside of class. I would say we discuss material from our classes, but we probably don't sound too intellectual. The students in my classes are VERY competetive. We all want As in every class. The most unique class I've taken might be Finite Math. It was all modular and everything was done on the computer. I've never had a class like that before. I am a recently declared accounting major, but I wouldn't really know anything about that yet, since I don't start the accounting classes until junior year. I spend a little bit of time outside of class with some of the business professors. I feel like Arkansas has high standards when it comes to academics. I think education is geared toward getting a job.

Alison

no research methods in psychology - favorite chemistry - least (too big of classes) study-1 hr a day max in small classes not a lot yes unique - the helping relationship major/department - yes with research lab pointless core curriculum learning
