University of California-San Diego Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Alex

I don't know how much any student would feel out of place at UCSD, but we do have a very low proportion of black and hispanic students so it is possible that they may feel out of place. However, I think most students at UCSD are very open and welcoming so such students would me made to feel welcome through interactions with many students.. There is a variety of what students wear to class...also depending on what time of day class is. Early morning class you can find many students in sweats and sweatshirts and such. Later in the day, many are very casual: jeans, a shirt and some flip flops. However, you'll always have students that wear sweats to class any time of day and those that get dressed up for class. Most students are from California-mostly Northern California. There is a good number of out of state students but not too many. Other than that a lot of students come from northern California because they want to stay in state but get away from home. This is the same reason why many southern California students to to northern california for school. I haven't found that any certain financial background is prevalent though.

Ryan

The christian groups here are pretty awesome. We definitely are not diverse group of students, which is really a bummer.

Christine

This school is heavily asian, but that's not to say there isn't any diversity here. I feel religion-wise the school doesn't discriminate at all, and people are friends with everyone without any regards to their background or race.

Liz

I love having options- there is a good variety of groups on campus. Probably someone who is not used to seeing so many people in the library at one time. Most students wear UCSD sweatshirts, jeans and vans/rainbows. UCSD is diverse (as far as different types of minorities) but the people are generally of one type. People seem to interact well. Four tables: 1) random 2) ppl studying 3) greek 4) ppl who are taking a break from studying Most students are from the bay area or the LA area. People, as a whole, seem pretty well off. People, as a whole, seem well informed. Predominately left. Depends.

Megan

I hate it when people try to pass out Bibles on campus and talk about God in th middle of PC. Believe what you want, just don't try to tell me about it. I feel like anyone could feel at home at UCSD if they were willing to put themselves out there and find their own niche. They can't just wait for it to find them, though. People wear all different things: I've seen sweats, bathing suits. I dress nice because its important to me to look presentable and I have to go straight to work. I'd say that UCSD is pretty cliquey. A lot of UCSD students are from the Bay Area, just like me. I don't know about other people's financial situations--its rude to ask people that. Many do talk about wanting to earn a lot of money though. None of my friends are particularly politically aware but I'm sure some people are. I'm trying to learn background about the upcoming election.

Charlie

it isnt' very diverse. a lot of asians. i've befriended most of the black community, and there aren't many of them. these students tend to stay within themselves which i don't like as well. the cross cultural center does an alright job of trying to get the students together, but something needs to happen on a more dynamic level. i'm actually sitting in a dining hall right now, and the tables are divided mainly by I-House international students, an asian table, there is a nice table that has an african-american and a latino sitting togehter, and another asian table. there are a lot of students who are politically active which is nice, but stil a lot who are ignorant about what goes on around them since they are more into their classes than anything else, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Reese

UCSD is a top-tier UC school and is therefor very asian. This was a huge culture shock for me and has it's pros and cons. I get a very anti-social vibe from some of the students on campus and some don't even make an effort to be friendly. probably just stressing out for a test, but of course the university is huge and there is a huge variety of students here. There's a big surf culture and skate culture. We have a surf/skateshop on campus!

Sarah

I think people on campus are politically aware and mostly left. There is some discrimination of course but I haven't witnessed any first hand.

Quinn

UCSD's study population is not that diverse at all. For under-represented, minority students there is OASIS which is such a great place to feel at home at. Students don't really wear pajamas to class, but wearing the typical sweat pants and sweatshirt one day if you get lazy is fine.

KJ

Yes I think all students interact with each other in one way or another, in classes and outside of classes at social events and within their own colleges. Most UCSD students are from California, northern or southern. No student should feel our of place at UCSD, but if they do then I don't know who. Most students wear jeans, sweatshirts, cute outfits, there's definitely a good mix and lots of variety. I think a good amount of students are politically active and aware.

Brett

i work at hillel, was on student council at erc

Angelica

UCSD is very good about promoting diversity and awareness. I have had nothing but positive experiences with ethnic, religious, LGBT, etc groups on campus. Organizations are generally free to host events promoting their interests. The atmosphere as far as dress code is very relaxed. The dress code for class is usually jeans, t-shirt, and flip flops. In the winter students will throw on a sweat shirt. There are students from all different back grounds at UCSD. One thing that is unique is that there is a predominately large Asian population. Politically the campus leans to the left.

Katie

most students are from well-off families, so they all seem to be very dependent on their parents, like the ones from la who go home every weekend and have no social life here. i dont think they actually like being here, they just want to become a doctor to make their parents happy.

Charlie

I was part of a committee that was made up of completely different people: Asians, whites, an African American, a couple Middle-Eastern students, a gay student, a Latino student, a girl from a farming family, a punk rocker with a lip ring and black clothes, Christians, Buddhists, Atheists...everyone! We practically lived together for half a year and now we're all close friends.

Jim

everyone and anyone would feel welcome. there is a niche for every person here.

Michelle

I like the organizations because many of them are very active. I don't know if many students would feel that our of place since many organizations are made so that one can find people to relate to and feel at home with. Most where jeans, T-shirt, and flip-flops (unless you're in lab). Yes, different students interact. HMMM...students? Most students are Californians, which makes sense, since UCs and States were made mainly for Californians. Most are on financial aid and from a middle class family. Yes, students are politically active and aware, but not aggressive about it. Most are left. Not so much, most people talk about graduating and what they hope to do after.

Ashley

I don't think anyone would feel out of place here because there's somany things and different types of people here. People wear flip flops all year round! Too many norcal kids...hahaha just kidding. They are politically active - super tuesday was a big deal.

Katie

The UCSD campus is probably the most diverse in terms of racial, religious, and LGBT resources than any other college in the area. There are dozens of strong programs and organizations dedicated to supporting the different, diverse communities and the administration and student body supports them all. Students are typically from the Los Angeles or northern California area, and typically come from middle class-upper class families. Wearing sweatshirts and jeans to class (or even whatever you wore the night before, including pajamas, if you have a class before 11) is generally considered the norm for this campus, which is extremely laidback and lighthearted. Students from all different backgrounds come together and just hang out; different majors eat together; there is no real restriction as to what you can do and who you can do it with. As for political action, students are not interested in politics, although the majority of students would lean left.

Kelly

I've seen all races, sexualities, religions, et con campus. However, there are very few black students compared to other races. Most UCSD students are from California.

Lauren

mostly kids from the suburbs go here. a lot of people are kind of the same. not a lot of LGBT, mostly upper middle class white and asian kids. the lack of diversity is really disappointing. Students are, for the most part, not politically active or even aware.

Beza

i have been in contact with people of different races, sexual orientation, socio-economic backgrounds and etc through the student affirmative action committee which is a coalition of all of those groups and organizations on campus. most like to put comfort over anything else on the avg day but everyone loves to dress up some more than others. people cant shut up about how rich/successful they will be one day. Most of the people that dont come from SAAC because people there are usually just interested in making a difference in their communities.

Christine

I do feel like there's a socio-economic difference. Flip flops and jeans are very common. I don't think students are as politically aware/active as they could be.

linh

sweaters and sweats. jeans.

Chelsea

I have never experienced a racial or religious problem at UCSD. Lately I have heard people talking about the underrepresentation of African Americans at this school, but nothing really negative about any ethnic group or religion. Being part of the greek system, I see many different types of people interacting. There are always going to be very studious people who like to study that hang out together, and the more social people that like to go out t every school. I think that a good percentage of people at UCSD have a good balance between academics and social life. There are many political opinions on campus and students have opportunities to learn more and voice their opinions.

Lizzy

Most students wear sweatshirts and jeans to class. It is extremely casual. I feel like most students are from the middle class. Most are not that politically aware/active.

amber

Most people at UCSD are from California. there are some other out-of state people though. A lot of people I meet are not really aware of politics. In classes, when professors ask about politics or current news, a lot of students cannot answer. People are more typically to the left if they pay attention to politics.

wendy

there is a group or club for everything. i am shocked by how many things go on at ucsd everyday. students generally wear comfortable clothes to class: jeans or sweats. most students are from somehwere in california.

Ami

There is a little bit of everyone.

Cortney

UCSD is very open to all groups on campus and everyone can find their place. Our african-american population is small and most black students that I know are all in BSU and find a great community there. We also have a large asian population but all-in-all I think most people feel comfortable here. Classes are really casual, except maybe for the few sorority girls that have to get all done up for class. most students are from california. Generally it's just pretty diverse and people mix with different groups fairly well.
