What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Quinn

The most popular student groups are pre-med organization and any volunteering organizaiton that will boost the application of pre-med or pre-health students. There are intermural sports like soccer here and football games are most likely sold out. People are friendly here and at the dorm I was at, Farrand, most people left their door open. Most athletic events, except for football, guest speakers ,and theater are not so popular, and most people who go are doing so for a class. There are quite a lot of Greek system here but less than half the school is affiliated with them. People who go to the Hill a lot tend to join the Greek system more, and some people will party from only for weekends or 4 times a week.

Travis

There is tons of stuff going on around here. Concerts at fox theater, outdoor hiking, climbing, pearl street, parties alllll the time. Everything you can think of, except swimming in the ocean

Alex

The HERD is a student body group that gives you a bunch of great discounts for campus activities and gives away CU apparel. They're a great group to get involved with 'cause you always know what different events are going on around campus.

Kelsey

There is some greek life at Boulder but i dont think its a big deal except to the people who are in it. People party a lot in boulder. House parties are pretty big because the bars are hard to get into if your not 21, and their cheaper. But the bar scene on Pearl street is pretty good too. An event that happens each year is 420 when everyone comes on campus and smokes, i guess thats a tradition. There is always stuff going on on campus or at different places in Boulder that dont involve alcohol so you dont have to drink to have fun if you dont want to .

Tim

Intramural Basketball is the best activity ever.

Abby

The social life is incredible. Our library, Norlin, was voted the number 1 people watching/ socializing library in the US. Dont get me wrong, there is studying going on there too, but who says you cant find a date for friday night while studying for your mid term exam? The night life is great - Pearl Street and the "hill" home some of the best, and diverse restaurants and bars around. As small as boulder is, it feels very swanky and metropolitan. Everyone is always dressed their best when they go out, and everyone knows how to celebrate after a big exam. During the day, there are so many outdoor activities. Rockclimbing, hiking, kayaking, biking, etc.... the scenery is breathtaking, and alll students want to do is breath it in.

The Annex is a campus ministry based out of First Presbyterian church in Boulder and meets every Tuesday night to give all students a place where they can truly worship God. "Real Life in Jesus Christ" is the goal of the Annex, and around 1000 students come every week from 8-10 to sing songs to God, listen to other students living out their life with Jesus, and to hear a talk by one of the directors. The Annex also has tons of chances to get involved in ministry and to get to know a few people very closely, and to make the mass of the group seem less massive. You can be part of a bible study with students your age, get involved in the awesome middle school and high school ministries run out of First Pres, go on mission trips to places like Jamaica, Thailand, New Orleans, or get involved in many other ways with students with similar interests. This ministry is a great chance to get to know God better, to meet other great people you otherwise wouldn't have, and to serve the community together. I highly recommend this for anyone and everyone, even if you don't like regular church services, because it's different when there are students all around who know what you are going through. This is a sweet opportunity that you won't get once you get out of college, so you need to take advantage of it while it's there for you. The men's ultimate frisbee team is nationally ranked and offers a high level of competition for all athletes in college. It's a great bunch of guys who work hard all year, in the fall when it's warm, and when its freezing and snowing and dark during the winter. We attend many tournaments in different places across the US, have two teams, A and B, and compete for the championship every year in May. Collegiate ultimate frisbee is very competitive now, and is getting even moreso as time goes, and CU has gone to the national championship tournament the most consecutive years of any team. Tryouts are open to everyone in the fall, and everyone is invited to come check it out and show what they got. I am lucky to be involved in this team and to be part of a group of guys who work so hard towards one thing together.

Peter

I am a member if the club ultimate frisbee team. It is a TON of fun and very competitive, and I get a great workout at least 5 times a week. I've met many friends through Ultimate, and do things outside of frisbee with them all the time. Cu's social life is great. Anything you want to do? Any kind of people you want to meet? Seek and you shall find.

Lizzie

Sports teams, club teams, and intramurals. CU Equestrian team! It is amazing. We take any level of rider and have an amazing time. We have weekly meetings and get to compete with other schools. Students in the dorms do not tend to leave their doors open. Athletic events are very popular, then guest speakers, then theater. People tend to date who they either meet in class or out at a party. I met my closest friends in the dorms and in my sorority. If I am awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I am studying. holidays. people party different amounts. I party once a week. I am in a sorority; therefore I think they are very important. I had a horse show last weekend and also had a roller-skating party with my sorority and another fraternity. You can do so much on the weekends that doesn’t involve drinking, you can see a movie, get dinner, or hangout on pearl street. I horseback ride off campus and also shop on pearl Street.

Stephanie

very school spirited students. dorms are fun and doors are open. lots to do, whether or not you party. i am on the equestrian team and love it. ive made great friends and get to horse show for CU.

Jessica

Probably the most popular organizations on campus are the intramural and club sports teams. The equestrian team, of which I am an officer, averages about 30 members a semester. Our club provides students with the opportunity to experience horses and riding regardless of financial status or ability. Beginniers are more than welcome and help us gain team points at horse shows despite common assumptions to the contrary. From my experience most people had their doors open during the day hours but closed them later on around 9/10 pm. Football is very popular at cu as far as athletic events go but most other sports receive a relatively low turn out. I met my closest friends in the dorm freshman year. If I had it to do over I would have made so many more friendships that year and not worried so much about my long distance boyfriend who I'm no longer with. I'd say there is a party every night in boulder... you just have to know where to look. Most people stick to thursdays though. If you don't want to drink you can go bowling, catch a movie, go see a band, or other live show. I do mostly everything off campus, I live, work, and party off campus. The only things I do on campus are go to class, meet to study, and occasionally go to the theatre.

Shannon

Parties anywhere, all the time. You will probably always know someone who knows a party but the decision to go is always your choice. Most of the time they are at the surrounding houses on the Hill and you get a sense of where to avoid if you so choose. If you do decide to go to a party, they are always fun and you meet tons of people. If you don't want to drink on say, a Saturday, you can go to Pearl street and eat out, or go see a movie or a concert at the Fox. Intramural sports are really fun and a good way to meet people. The other night my roomate and I were studying with the door open and some really hot guys came and asked us if we could fill two empty spots on their intramural flag football team. We of course said "heck yes" and never regretted it, it was so much fun and we made some really cool friends. At 2 am on a Tuesday you might be doing homework, studying, or hanging with friends and watching a movie in someone's dorm room. Or you could be drinking, smoking, or eating.

Dani

I feel like Football and basketball is really popular by far. The second most popular student group would have to be soccer. A lot of people who live in my dorm joined intramurals, and that also seems to be pretty popular. Academically, I'm not sure what organizations are popluar, but i am involved with the Equestrian CLub. This is a student run organization that is not funded by the school, and requires little commitment, but allows for me to keep up with my hobby. The students within my dorm do keep their doors open, which made it very easy to become close with everyone on my floor. Some tuesdays i am up at 2am just hanging out with friends who live on my floor, people party at least every weekend, if not a little bit during the week as well. Frats are not a part of the school anymore but both frats and sororities are pretty important to the school, as rush week is a big deal. Last weekend, i participated in a horse show that was put on my the equestrian club that i am in. On a saturday night instead of drinking you can just hangout with friends, watch a movie, go bowling at the UMC, or go to the planetarium, there are lots of things to do other than drinking. Off campus there is shopping, houses to go to, eating, hiking, and of course skiing.

Kristina

Personally, I am one of the busiest people I know. I have been a member of the CU Equestrian Team for 4 years, and have been an officer (captain) for the past 3. I am proud to be going and represented the Buffs in two week at Louisiana Sate University. I practice at least 5 times/week, weather depending. I also am a campus tour guide, giving at least one weekly tour, assisting with all-day visit programs, and giving tours to potential student athletes. I also work for athletics, doing game-day activities for football in the fall, and typing practice notes and training tables in the spring. I already have my after college job, which I've started part time. All of these networks have allowed me to connect with my campus, and have friends from each activity, plus my major. Being 22, I do participate in a weekly Trivia Night with my fellow Student Ambassadors (tour guides) on Wednesday nights. On Mondays, we also have a "B-League" Intramural Team. Some of my other favorite things to do are frequent some of the many concerts held in and around Boulder - the music scene is fierce! Also, the University has a deal with Columbia Pictures, and they show movies here for free that are not yet released in theaters. That happens 4-12/month, and are always the most popular movies. Also, skiing and hiking are some other favorite things, walking on Pearl Street, going out to eat, and getting friends together to study. Fraternities/Sororities have a presence on campus, but actually populate about 11{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our campus. As we like to say, its here if you want it, not encompassing if you don't. The University has so much history, I love exploring it with my fellow students. And BY FAR my favorite thing to do- attend football and basketball games. The Student Athletes are my friends, and a lot are in my major, I LOVE going out to support them on game day.

Kelly

The sports teams are not crazy popular, but football is probably the most. The CU Triathlon team is the best in the country and Boulder is the best place to train(High Altitude = PRs!) Students who leave their doors open in the dorms get their shit stolen. Football games are packed. Guest speakers are cool, theater is all right. Tons of hot girls here. Mostly white(I seem to be dating one of the only non-white girls on campus) I met my closest friends and roommates in the dorms. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I'm probably drinking or high as balls. Some people party all the time or not at all. The Greek scene is full of rich white guys and girls who need to buy their friends. The quality of life is so good here that there is no need for frat parties and the only people in frats are ignorant dicks(Thats not a grudge, 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of people on campus will tell you that) I got shit faced last weekend since its St. Paddy's day. On a saturday you can do anything you want. From drinking to movies to sleeping. I only go to campus for classes so my life is off campus

Jeremy

"A drinking school, with a football problem" Most students love to go watch the Buffs at the beautiful Folsom Stadium. It seems like everyone loves to ski or snowboard. There are always a ton of concerts, games, and theater shows. Fraternity life on campus has also changed a lot in the past four years. I recommend all students to give a try at Greek life. Every Fraternity is different and fit to all most all personalities. If you want to have close friends, organized events, community service, and alumni connections you can find your fit in the greek system.

Jody

The social scene is off the hook!

Andrew

I've actually managed to steer clear of the Boulder party scene since I moved back here. I know that a lot of people drink, and there is always something going on up on the Hill, but I often feel like those students live a completely different life than I do. I have a close circle of friends who I spend most of my time with when I'm not working, and since I live pretty far off campus I'm not really involved in the social gatherings that are close to the majority of students.

Nico

My social life blows.

Jordan

The most popular groups and organizations on campus are ones that deal with political and social issues. These would include Coprig, Amnesty International and New Era. I am involved with College democratics where we attend several political events in Boulder and Denver and promote vote registration on campus. Students in dorms almost always have their dorm room doors open, even when they are studying. Athletic events are very popular on campus, especially football during the fall. If I am awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I am most likely cramming for an exam. I would say that people at CU party no more than at other colleges. The days most likely to have parties is on Thursday or Saturday. If you do not want to drink on Saturday night there are mnay movie nights on campus and even bowling. Also, you could be hitting the slopes!

Jillian

-College Republicans get a lot of attention. Football players. The crazy group that puts up abortion pictures all the time. -I'm in Phi Alpha Delta, pre-law fraternity. It's a small group of kids who want to know about law school, go to law school and have something good on their resume. -All the time. -Football is huge. We get amazing guest speakers, like Kofi Annan, because our school is so crazy rich. I go to theater events often, but I'm into it. There are people who like everything. The school is big enough that there is someone who likes anything you can think of. -I've never had trouble :) -In the dorms and through other friends I met in the dorms. One of them, I met on the first day of my first class. -Studying or drinking! -4/20 on Farrand Field. CU v CSU football game. Cinco de Mayo. Anything where you can drink to celebrate. -ALL THE TIME -Not very. Most people think they are ridiculous, myself included. Not to say that some nice boys are girls don't join. -Had a party to benefit the Global Fund to Fight Aids. -Movie, bowling, eat out, dancing...whatever you are interested in. -Everything that isn't class.

Erin

Thursday nights are crazy at CU so be prepared, don't sign up for any classes early on Friday mornings! At CU the weekends are 3-4 days long.

Dawson

There are countless activities for anyone who believes in anything can do. The rec center at CU is gigantic (one of the largest on campus rec centers in the country I believe) incuding 2 olimpic sized swimming pools (with 4 high dives), multiple weightrooms, 4 basketball courts, and 4 levels of other fun stuff too! One main Boulder tradition would be the big smoke out on 420. Lots of other fun stuff to, come check it out :)

Cody

The Boulder Freeride is a ski/snowboard club on campus, probably the largest club. Quarterly meetings, giveaways, rail jams, ski trips etc. throughout the year. I', involved with the Annex, a Christian student group., where I've met many of my good friends. We go on ski trips, retreats, hikes and there is weekly worship on Tuesday nights. Athletic events are very popular and there is a lot of school pride. Foot ball and Basketball are the biggest. It is easy to party midweek here, a few of the non-engineers in my dorm come in very late 4 or 5 days a week. But again, there's usually something else to do whether that's going to a movie, live performance, skiing, climbing gym . . .

Nicholas

I had really liked the social scene at the CU campus. My experience in the dorms was great. Everyone was very social and we created a very fun community with everyone on the floor. When people were in their rooms, their doors were left open making it very easy to socialize. So easy that it was almost too easy to procrastinate actual school work. It was never hard to find someone to eat with in the dining hall. It seems that my experience is not uncommon. I also met my best friends and current roommates while living in the dorms. Football games are a big event on campus. Other sports have their following but are not as widespread. Fraternities and sororities are not the center of social life on campus. Their presence is definitely felt and they have a following but one can certainly find other things to do than attend frat parties. People party all the time. The biggest nights for parties are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Students under 21 can usually find a house party to go to or they drink in their own dorms or houses. Drinking in the dorms is dangerous because the Resident Assistants (RA's) are constantly on the lookout to bust underage students. Once people turn 21 they usually head to the bars more than house parties. The most popular student organization at Boulder is the Ski and Snowboard Club. I am a part of the Triathlon team. It is a great organization for anyone remotely interested in completing a triathlon. We have some very experienced and accomplished athletes on the team who are more than willing to impart their knowledge. The team welcomes all levels of athletes and is a great resource for the budding triathlete.

Amy

Muslim Student Association is the most popular and diverse student group. There are around 300 students groups that you can get involved with. Club Sports is another big one. I am involved with UCSU (student government) and the Environmental Center - both are very influential and AWESOME groups to get involved with. UCSU controls ~$40 million and is based on the federal government. I have gained invaluable experience with UCSU. The E-Center was the first University Environmental Center, had the first recycling program, has an amazing transportation program, and has helped the university to gain the reputation as one of the most sustainale campuses in the US. Dorm life sucks. Either you party (take drugs and drink) or you don't. But at least you can meet cool people, and they may be future roommates. One thing is for sure, DO NOT STAY IN THE DORMS!!! Football games are huge. Guest speakers are huge (Kofi Annan, John Ashcroft...). Theater sucks here. I used to be a theater major, so I know. The only thing that is decent is the annual Shakespeare Festival. But that's it. Dating scene = you meet people when you are drunk at parties or bars. People all want SEX...sex sex sex. Lots of it, too. It was tough coming to CU as a virgin. Nobody wants to date a virgin, that's for sure. The best friends I have met here have been through student organizations. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am (1) partying (2) campaining (3) studying. Best tradition in Boulder: The Naked Pumpkin Run on Halloween. DO IT!!!! People party here all the damn time. Frats/Sororities are isolated. Lots of bad stereotypes that tend to be reinforced through certain events each year. I have never been to a frat party because I am afraid of frat guys....end of story. And sorority girls are characterized as slutty and stupid. Last weekend I went to Vail. On a Sat. night I will be at a concert. The Fox is a great venue. I am never off campus except when I am sleeping.

Casey

We have 32 club sports, a fairly large athletic department and intermurals. There are a lot of people involved in political organizations and outdoor clubs. I am strongly involved in New Era Colorado and the Women's rugby team. The rugby team travels a lot and is ranked seventh in the country for women's rugby teams. It is just a great group of girls that love to hang out on and off the field. New Era Colorado is a political organization that has a similar level of bonding, a non-partisan group that registers people to vote and is working on legislation to lower the age you can run for office, legalize online voter registration in colorado and get same day registration, as well as holding meet the candidates events for local elections and educating voters on all the issues to encouraging voting at all levels of government among students. Dorm doors are always open if people are in them and it is a really social atmosphere, its required to live there freshman year, but i wouldn't give up the experience for anything anyway. Athletics are HUGE everyone buys football and basketball season tickets and we have student groups that come together just to make athletic events more exciting - matching shirts, learning fun cheers and traditions and providing info on the opponents, one of them is called the CUnit we have a group called the distinguished speakers board that just in my four years has brought many speakers including Kofi Anan and Jhon Ashcroft. The theater and music departments put on several shows each each semester and i have never been disappointed. The Boulder/Denver area has the highest number of singles in the country and has been labeled several times as the best place to be if you are single, and it is. I met my closest friends at New Era and on the Rugby team and I will be friends with them forever. Im at taco Tuesday at Juanita's for $1 tacos and beer. There is a Naked Pumpkin run every Holloween and its hundreds of people and even if you dont run the bars are packed with spectators that fill the streets. there is a 4/20 smoke out on Ferrand field. A nearly naked mile underwear run. Several student groups go on yearly trips together abroad and you can almost always find an affordable one. People party every night. before your 21 its like thursday through saturday but everywhere else its a party any time you want one. Fraternities and sororities aren't that big on campus. the frats provide the space for a lot of the house parties, but i wouldn't say they are that important on campus. Last weekend i went to some house parties and bar hopping, and then had rugby on sunday. there are always all age concerts, open dance clubs socials, and the hill parties are only alcohol centered if you want them to be, which for many freshmen they are not. I go to a lot of art and music shows and coffee shops. I also go hiking and bike riding, and during the winter we have the best skiing in the country, both back country and downhill.
