What is your overall opinion of this school?

Julie

There isn't much school pride, I wouldn't even call Boulder a college town; though everyone is aware of the school and the accomplishments that are part of CU. The Hill and Pearl St. are both fun for students. On campus there are lots of activities and hundreds of groups, the campus its self is large and beautiful.

Devin

Boulder is an awesome city, there is always so much to do and a lot of people to meet! The Boulder campus is beautiful and very peaceful to study on and just lay out and relax. Campus is large, so you always get your exercise walking from class to class, last year I had a class in the law building and it took me about twenty minutes to walk from there to my next class everyday. Everyone is very liberal in Boulder and you can tell in your classes, not all but most ive noticed. But Boulder is an awesome school and I would not have wanted to go anywhere else.

Suze

Fantastic, massive campus! Great place to meet new people, and the surrounding city is amazing because it is so focused on teh college. School pride is massive - we hate every school we play football against. We have mountains in our backyard - there is always something to do.

Lauren

I love that people always seem impressed and intrigued when I tell them where I go to school. Their faces light up, their eyes get wide and they start to smile. It might be partly because I can't help smiling when I tell some one where I go to school. It might not be the most prestigious school but it certainly has some amazing people, amazing faculty and amazing experiences to go along with it.

Erik

The best thing about Boulder is the college town feel wherever you go. The coolest thing I noticed after my first year at school was that almost everywhere you go, everybody is the same age as you. It's really weird coming home from school and seeing old people in or around your neighborhood, so take advantage of getting to know people the same age as you. As for the school experience alone, students take pride in going to school at CU-Boulder. For me, it's always been my dream school, so I take full advantage of everything CU has to offer. The football games are awesome, the basketball games are a great experience, and the professors are there to push you, but also help you if you take the time to enhance your own education.

Anna

The best thing about Boulder is that there is an overwhelming amount of opportunities to challenge yourself. Between the endless amount of physical activities the mountains provide, to the laid back accepting community, there is never a moment where you are pressured to fit into a certain mold. It is a place where you can truly figure out who you are, what you stand for, and what you want to become. Personally, I love the college town environment. It feels safe, energetic, and young. The pride that comes from that is huge, which I love.

Matt

Boulder in general and in my opinion is one of the best places to live and go to school. Because Boulder is located right at the foot of the flatirons, it is a very beautiful place with great weather. We have mild summers and mild winters, we do on occasion have a 4 foot snow and occasionally see temperatures reach the 100s in the summer. If I had to change one thing about Boulder it would be the amount of parking, Boulder can be a difficult place if you are used to free parking everywhere you go. Boulder is very strict on there parking policies and I have received numerous parking violations. There is a certain stigma that follows the CU student or as most like to term the 'Boulderite', this stigma can be positive and negative given the stereotypes that attributed to our school. CU Boulder is ranked as the 11th best public university in the world and that is something that we as students are very proud of. The campus itself is surprisingly compact and easy to get around, I did have a bike my first year, but walking on foot is the best way to go on campus. Boulder is definitely a great college town, there are great local bars and restaurants, a huge party and nightlife scene, and CU Boulder is a huge football school (Saturdays in the fall are the best!). "The Hill" (located west of the main campus) is a great place to live if you are looking for the college town experience, North and East Boulder is a great place to live if you want a more laid back and relaxed residential living experience. Boulder's administration has faced major controversy in the past and has, in my opinion, overcome these setbacks with great success. The most recent controversy on campus was centered around CU's new president, what most students don't realize is that the President of a University has the sole job of raising money for the school, in terms of our new President he is a CU grad and one of the most successful fund raisers in the State of Colorado, in my eyes this is the perfect person to have as our President. This controversy and others over the years has show the enormous amount of school pride that CU students have for their University. I will always remember meeting my dorm roommate for the first time, living with a complete stranger was one of the most exciting things about college, and was instrumental in my growth as a person and a student. Overall CU has been a great place to go to school and Boulder has been and will continue to be a great place to live for many years to come.

Boulder is a small town with a big campus. You can get basically anywhere on the city buses, and I mean anywhere, so don't worry if you don't have a car, Boulder is super pedestrian friendly! Its nice to have a campus so compact, it makes walking even from one end to the other doable in 15 minutes, so you can easily make it to all your classes on time. You have to pack for every kind of weather. We get snow in april and 85 degrees in December, so be ready for anything. Since I'm an engineer, I am at the engineering center all the time. It's a great place to study. The library isn't bad, but its always very crowded during midterms/finals. The school is big, which I like! Most of the professors (in engineering at least) are very nice and want to help you succeed and they will go out of their way to help you if you ask. College town, for sure. The Hill is great to get food or hang out with friends, and always has parties going somewhere if you are into that. RENT IN BOULDER IS SO EXPENSIVE! Since Boulder has a population cap, living in Boulder is expensive! When you move off campus, consider a few things. First, start finding a place in Nov. or December (10 months in advance). You'll be able to look at all your options. If you start looking in Jan. and Feb., you'll have a lot fewer choices, and everything is gone by mid march (not kidding, EVERYTHING is rented out for the next school year by march). Second, be prepared to shell out an arm and a leg if you want to live anywhere in Boulder. If you don't mind commuting, you can get a much nicer place outside of Boulder for the same price or less. Also, parking is ridiculous. Parking permits for on campus parking are 150+ a semester, and meters are all around $2-3 an hour anywhere in Boulder. These issues are all due to the pop cap.

Andy

I don't really like boulder. This school is not too big, but the people here are very judgmental and all they care about is partying. It is definitely a college town. The "Hill" would be a very cool place to hang out if everyone wasn't always drunk when they hung out there. There is so much drinking. There is school pride but it's the wrong kind. It's dirty and drunken, whereas some schools just have plain school spirit. The only thing the students are concerned about is getting drunk or high.

Madison

Gorgeous school, gorgeous people looking to have a good time. Lots of fun to be had, although studying isn't number one on everybody's agenda. The school made the town, but the town makes the school so chill. People are generally liberal, free-thinkers and lots of people who care about nature and the environment. Overall, such an amazing place to spend four years...I couldn't imagine myself any place else.

Phil

In Colorado Boulder is known as the people's republic of Boulder. That pretty much sums it all up.

Amy

The atmosphere in Boulder is great and there's something for everyone whether it's curricular or extracurricular. There are so many course options and the staff is great. There's just about any kind of restaurant you could think of around Boulder, and most cater to the student budget pretty well. The campus seems to be ever-growing as so many people want to go here and just as many don't want to leave.

Tara

Boulder is definitely a huge college town--go to a restaurant and look around...everyone is within the ages of 18-28ish Best thing about Boulder is the laid back atmosphere. The one thing I'd change is the ridiculous sorority girls and frat boys...basically the whole greek system is one annoying group of kids. There is a lot of school pride, people are always wearing the school apparel and most events have a good turnout. The biggest student complaint is the bookstore, it's the biggest ripoff I've ever unfortunately been involved in.

Andy

My favorite thing in Boulder is a sunny day. When the sun is shinning and it warms up hundred of students gather on every piece of grass around campus to hang out, do homework, play frisbee, and suntan. The atmosphere is welcoming and accepting to all who want to enjoy the beautiful day.

Sasha

Our school is pretty big so it's easy to feel like you're just a number. I like that we are so proactive about the environment. People will think you're a hippy when you tell them where you go. But our degrees are pretty impressive.

Bonnie

The best thing about Boulder is the beautiful campus. It is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. There are so many students, and yet, you forget about that when you walk around. Everyone knows somebody. There's not a lot of school pride though, well there's school pride, but no real traditions to speak of....besides getting schwasted! Which brings me to the biggest complaint, "Dude, I got busted! All I was doing was drinking (or insert some drug)."

Jennifer

Boulder is amazing I come from California and had a hard time leaving the beach. However once I started school here I fell in love and have not once regreted being here at Boulder. Everything is amazing night life, socializing, being out doors. I love Boulder and its outdoor atmosphere.

Jordan

We just like to have fun and let everyone have their own way. Nobody is an outcast, but there are some cliques. Go to the stadium grill for dorm food if you live on campus.

Justin

One of the best things about Boulder is that everyone is so involve and it is easy to get involved in anything. As far as school size, I fell it is just right, it is definitely not a small school. There are a ton of places to hang out on campus. when the weather is nice their will always be people on Farrand Field playing Frisbee, football, soccer, etc. I also spend some time in the cadet lounge which is where a lot of the ROTC people hang during the day. The town of Boulder is amazing. It has great food and shops, and campus is just a short walk away from Pearl street mall, 29th street mall and the "hill", all of which are great. CU has a tremendous amount of school spirit. The stadium is packed for every football game and tailgating goes on all day long. CU has the number on mascot, Ralphie, a real buffalo, who when runs down the field during half time and the beginning of the game gets the stands to erupt.

Lauren

Boulder is the perfect college town. It has a wonderful enviornment that is very college student friendly. It's beautifully placed against the flat irons of the Rocky Mountains. The biggest hangout is called "The Hill" and it is just a short walk from campus. The Hill has tons of dinning places, The Fox (a theatre where they hold great concerts), and many cool houses where lots of students live. The Boulder community is really friendly with college students and it is a great place to go to school, lots to do!

maribel

boulder is amazing because it is the typical college town. everyone lives close to eachother, there are great restaurants and bars on pearl, the greek system is fun, and our football team, although not the best in the country, has the greatest school spirit. there is always something to do on the weekends whether its snowboarding, concerts, events at local ski resorts, etc. I am so proud to say I go here, and whenever someone comes here for the first time, they fall in love. everyone is super friendly, and love visitors. I felt right at home the first time i came

Mackenzie

Boulder is a great place to go to school! The campus is by far one of the most beautiful I've seen in the United States. The professors I've dealt with have a sincere interest in your academic success. The town itself is amazing as well. Everything you need is in town! We're only an hour and a half from major ski resorts and a half hour from a local ski resort. The night life is one of the best things about Boulder. You can go out to Pearl Street and enjoy a small town atmosphere. The only complaint I have about Boulder is housing. Nice, clean, affordable housing is difficult to find and anything that IS nice is leased IMMEDIATELY! The realty offices are also inconsiderate when dealing with students.

Ryan

Boulder is a good combo of city and nature. City in a sense that you are pretty close to night life, restaurants, and such, but you can go on hikes and road bike and still do the outdoors stuff. It definitely has the college town feel, but there are parts that get away from that as well. Football is pretty big here, even though our team isn't exactly that great. Like I said before, very little diversity. It looks like all of the students of color on campus are part of the CU athletics teams.

Ryan

Boulder is a really cute town and the campus has a really nice aesthetic too. The UMC and Norlin library are great places to hang out between classes, and there's plenty of green space to throw a frisbee or football when the weather is nice.

KJ

Boulder is great if you want to go to college in a beautiful setting. The campus is absolutely gorgeous and Boulder itself is set right up against the mountains of Colorado. From Boulder it only takes about an hour and a half or so to get to the ski resorts! Boulder itself feels like a smaller college town with so many activities to do. Pearl Street and the Hill are two of the main hang out areas in Boulder. There is also the 29th st. mall with a new movie theatre, but be warned the shops there are ridiculously high ended. If you're into rock climbing the Boulder Rock Climbing Gym, The Spot, and the climbing center (cheaper) inside the CU Rec center are all great places for indoor climbing. Boulder is a happening campus with different lectures, cultural events, sports, and all other sorts of activities going on all the time. The UMC is the main student center where you can find any activity to suit your interest or start your own. You'll also be sent a ton of emails from the buff bulletin that tells everything happening with the university. Boulder is a large campus but it's easy to find your way around. One of my favorite hang out spots between classes when it's warm outside is the Norlin quad a long grassy area with tall trees and beautiful views of the Flatirons (large rocks juttin up against the mountains- Boulders pride and joy) Classes at Boulder can be very large with sometimes 500 students in one lecture hall. Once you start taking upper division classes they tend to be smaller but as a general rule expect big classes. The administration tends to be more conservative than the student body and therefore butts heads with them sometimes, (4/20 is a good example of this) but generally as a student you don't have any interaction with them. Most of my friends, myself included, have had good, helpful academic advisors within your major department. I would reccommend the psychology program at CU to anyone. Overall I would say my experience with Boulder has been great! Boulder is definately more of a social campus in the sense that while students do work, you're more likely to find them out and about than stuck in a library studying all the time. One of my favorite things about going to school in Boulder has been having the mountains so close at hand, and making friends who are active open-minded people.

Ashley

Boulder is a very outdoorsy town, students really utilize the mountains and the enjoy a wide range of activities. Boulder is a great young town there are tons of activities. Whether your shopping on Pearl st. or hiking the flatirons there seems to always be something going on. The school is a huge university but because of the campus layout and the major classifications you see the same people all the time. When i tell people that i go to Boulder they assume that im some sort of vegan protestor, and while there are people like that the sterotype is far less broad than what the demographic of CU is really like. One of the great things about CU is that the student are very proud to attend this university. There always seems to be people sporting CU gear and the football games are alway a huge CU support (whether were winning or loosing). Recently a new president was elected, the campus was abuzz with student complaints. I dont think the regents did a good enough job of telling the student body and the faculty what their long term plan for the university that we all attend.

Kristin

When I tell people I go to Boulder they comment on what a pretty campus it is and what a nice place Boulder is. Biggest controversy: new president.

Kelly

Beautiful view.. no matter what the weather... Spend extra time on "the hill" where there are places to eat, shop, and drink.

Brittany

- I absolutely love everything about Boulder. The weather, the city, the scenery, the activities, the people. Boulder makes the school a lot more than just college; it makes people more passionate, understanding, active, while still challenging each student.

Quinn

Most people in Boulder are really friendly here, and it's really easy to make friends, and it's because we have such a huge school with tons of kids, and you can always find someone who you can totally relate to. I say about half of the people in our school party a lot, but most people try really hard in academics as well. It's nice because if you are a partier, health-nut, nature lover, studious, or shop-aholic (although you might have to go to neighboring towns to go to the mall), this town will totally accomodate your needs. If you can't live without high-rise skyscrapers, this is not the town for you. We recently had a controversy on choosing our new President for CU, and we protested on the process of how they chose him, but at the end it died down. Many people don't know what's really going on with our student government nor our school administration, and not many people care.

Travis

Boulder is awesome, if it's right for you. It's a really cool, small city, right before the rocky mountains start. Great place for doing anything outdoors. The school is just beautiful, campus is not too big especially for the amount of kids here. The place just has everything you could ask.

Alex

One of the best things about going to CU Boulder is being able to wake up every morning and see the Rocky Mountains right outside your window, or as your walking across campus; they're really a beautiful sight and you never get tired of looking at them. Some people say that a school with a student body of 30,000 is too big, and at first I'll admit I thought the same thing, but eventually you don't even notice it and start seeing the same faces over and over again. Making your own little community of friends and relationships with professors is how to not be intimidated and be only a number here.

Kelsey

Boulder is a pretty big school, you can get lost in the crowd which some people enjoy. Because there so many people there are lots of clubs and stuff which is cool. The actual town of Boulder is cool, just a little crowded.

Tim

There is a lot of school pride her at Boulder. My friend told a scenario that depicts our pride perfectly after we beat the CSU Rams in football my freshmen year: CSU fan: "You guys from Boulder put up a pretty good fight!" Buff: "We fuckin' KILLED you!" We won the game in the final seconds, so it was hardly a beat-down, yet we rallied like we were the top team in the NCAA. That's the pride we have here.

Abby

Like I said before, there is nothing negative to say about Boulder or CU. It is the most diverse, intellectual and most beautiful places I have ever been. We are right at the foot of the flatirons, one hour away from skiing, we have a great night scene with superb restaurants and bars. Not to mention the amazing, and endless outdoor activities. I don't think one person who visits the campus and Boulder can say one bad thing about it. Our football season in the fall is my favorite time of the year. The students get so pumped for the games, and it is ALWAYS a great showing and a great time. Boulder beats everywhere else.

Peter

By far the best thing about CU is the beautiful campus and surrounding area. There have been several times during my second semester as a sophomore that I have stopped midstep to simply appreciate the beauty around me. As far as Boulder goes, it's probably my second favorite city ever. It is a great college town. It is compact and easy to get around in. The bus system is phenomenal. There are plenty of good places to eat, and plenty fo fun things to do. Most importantly of all, Boulder has a lot of character and it is fun to see some of the crazy things that go on while you are here. I don't pay attention to CU's administration. There is always info the paper about, about school issues and student complaints, I just don't. As long as I am happy with the education I am receiving, I feel no reason to get involved.

Lizzie

I think the school is a perfect size. People think that Boulder is a party school and that people don’t work hard. I spend most of my time on campus or on the hill. I think that the administration is fine I haven’t really looked into it at all. There was a controversy on the new President. There is so much school pride. Boulder has an unusually good mix of types of people. One thing that I will always remember is the first time I met my roommate. Students complain about the classes being too focused on tests.

Stephanie

the college town, feeling safe. lots to do.

Jessica

The best thing about boulder are the cool laid back people who still have goals and go after them. People here know when to work and when to play; the somewhat cliche phrase "work hard, play hard" comes to mind and its absolutely true. If I could change one thing about boulder it would be the ridiculous parking. There is no such thing as free parking and with all the parking rules I'd be amazed at someone who spent even a year here without receiving a parking ticket. Boulder is definitely a college town. The bustle of the school year quickly dies down during the breaks and over summer. I stay in boulder all year long and often look forward to the quiet of the summer.

Shannon

The best thing about Boulder is the location. It's BEAUTIFUL 24/7. Everyday you walk on campus you look to the Flatirons and think how greatful you are to go there. Most days it is sunny and a perfect temperature and when it snows it's just as beautiful. There are busses that go everywhere...all over Boulder like Pearl Street Mall and 29th Street Mall where you can go shopping, Chataqua Park where you can hike the Flatirons, or down to Denver for a fun time. Boulder is a huge school and sometimes the enormity can get to you, especially in the beginning. But once you begin meeting people, be it in your dorm, in a class, or at a party you start recognizing more and more faces. As you walk around you find yourself saying hi to increasing amounts of people and it's a really good feeling to know that there are a lot of people that you could hang out with. I came from a really small, all girls high school, so the size issue was a big one for me. But after a few weeks of living here I prefer it to a small school. When I tell people I go to Boulder they smile and say "cool." The thing is is that there are so many types of people that go to Boulder, you can't judge someone right away. As you continue your conversation with this person, as with any conversation, you leave your own impression and whether or not that fits into the Boulder pot-smoking, hippie stereotype is up to you. There is tons of school pride here. Ask anyone on campus about anything related to Boulder and they would be happy to discuss it with you at length. Football and basketball games are always a blast because there is so much pride-the cheers pump everyone up and the kinship is defintely felt. The whole town of Boulder prides itself in CU. Everything is really oriented around the school, even though it is a big town.

Dani

its close to the mountains, i would change the marijuana reputation, i think the campus is pretty big but i like it like that. I also think this campus is really pretty, when people hear that i go to school here, they are usually impressed because they do hear that the academics are difficult. Currently i spend most of my time in my dorm, in class, or on the hill ( a location right by campus). I think this school definately has a lot of school spirit considering everyone wears school related clothing. School spirit is very high during football games.

Kristina

The best thing about Boulder is the variety of activities available for everyone. I have never been somewhere or experienced anything where whatever you put into the University, it gives back you you even more. Boulder is a college town, and everyone here is a Buff Fan, most for life. You meet the friendliest people here, and would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't love it here. The weather is a bit unpredictable, but the mountain views are breathtaking. The administration has undergraduate education in mind, and never loses sight of that. The students have challenged the University to give them a degree that they can take pride in, and CU has answered that challenge, and made our degree something to prepare us for the world. My favorite part of my 4 years was the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, and make friends for life.

Kelly

The best thing about Boulder is how gorgeous it is! If I were to change one thing I would make CU-Boulder way more diverse. The school is large but I like that. When I tell people I go to Boulder, they always say "Wow, Boulder is beautiful" its not a tier 1 school, but its not Chico State either. Most of my time on campus is either in class or on Norlin Quad getting some sun in the spring. Boulder is kind of a college town, but its more a town with College areas. The biggest controversy on campus recently was some douche published a satire on how Asians on campus hate Americans(I really don't like that guy!) There is a ton of school pride. I feel that the City of Boulder police and parking enforcers suck! No where else will you get your car towed for a parking ticket that you got two years ago. Boulder tries to squeeze every dollar out of you! I'll always remember the first time it snowed here, BEAUTIFUL! I would say that the most frequent student complaint is that the cops are so bored that if you are of college age you get fucked with relentlessly!

Jeremy

The best thing about Boulder is that it is the most beautiful place on earth. One thing I would change is the wind. The school is very big, but you can choose to make it small or big. When I walk around I know a ton of people that make me believe that I go to a very small school. When I tell people I go to Boulder they all replay "How much weed do you smoke?" This is a huge false stereotype, most people don't smoke. I spend most of my time in the Theater on campus and the UMC. They both have computer labs and places to get work done. There is a lot of school pride and we love our football. We are not shy when it comes to the Buffs!

Jody

The best thing about boulder for me is the outdoor culture, friendly social enviroment and sense of passion in the poeple I meet.

dani

1. best thing about boulder is all of adventurous, outdoor activities right in our town! I would change the lack of diversity!! I love our big school! People think boulder is either a hippie school or a great town to live in. I spend most of my time on campus at the rec center. It is definitely a college town! I think the administration could use some work/ incentive to want to be a teacher here. most recent controversy was the publication in the campus press. I wish there was more school pride. Everything is unsual about boulder. Most frequent complaints is all the skinny girls and the lack of diversity.

Andrew

I love the atmosphere here. It really is a place that you can just be yourself and not feel paranoid or self-conscious. And the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The only thing that makes me sad is the lack of diversity here. I read a statistic recently that said we have about 27,777 white students and only 416 black students. I feel like our campus would really benefit from getting the perspectives of students from different backgrounds. It is kind of a large campus, but I like it that way. I went to a small school in South Carolina for a year, and I was really turned off by it. I don't want a campus where I can't escape from people I don't want to see. I got enough of that in high school, and I don't feel like I'm sacrificing my education by attending a larger school. Most people aren't surprised at all when I tell them where I go to school. I'm a raging liberal and I used to party a lot, so I guess they just assume I fit the stereotype of a Boulder student. The biggest recent controversy was the addition of our new president. That or Max Karson's recent article in the Campus Press. Unfortunately, I'm not too well versed on the subject so I'd rather not stick my foot in my mouth. There always seem to be news crews on campus though, so I'm sure something more controversial will happen soon enough. There is certainly a large amount of school pride, and I wouldn't have it any other way. You can't go anywhere in Boulder without seeing the Ralphie logo or somebody in a Buffs hoodie.

Jody

I love all the sandwhich shops in Boulder.

Nico

The best thing about school in boulder is the student-friendly atmosphere of the city. It's easy to get around on foot, and a safe place to walk around at any time of day. The worst thing about boulder is the weather, but that can't be changed. I think the city could be more environmentally friendly with more recycling bins on campus for items beside paper. People react differently when i tell them i go to CU boulder, many assume I'm here to party. That stereotype needs to be less embraced by the student body because it diminishes our academic accomplishments. The school pride here is greater than that of my home university of hawaii, but is quite poor by big 12, SEC, big 10 standards. Students should really go to a football game to cheer for their school rather than to attract attention to themselves.

Jordan

The best thing about Boulder is the environment and surroundings. The campus is nestled next to the snow capped flatirons. The buildings on campus are also unique in that the architects attempted to make the buildings blend in with the surroundings so you can't help to be captivated by the nature. One thing I would change about CU is the parking situation. If you do not live within the vicinity of the campus or do not live on a bus route, driving and parking your car on campus is almost impossible. Tickets are handed out left and right and there parking passes are astronomical in price. CU's size is just right. You get the feeling of a large University, yet there are not so many students that you feel like a small fish in a big pond. When I tell people I go to Boulder they usually react by saying that it is a great school and I am lucky to be attending. When I am on campus I spend most of my time in the UMC, University Memorial Center. This is a place where students can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and catch up on homework. According to ESPN if Heaven was a college town, CU Boulder would be it, enough said. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the hiring of Bruce Benson as CU's president. Many students were concerned with his nomination because he is staunch Republic with a shaky past.
