University of Delaware Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Caitlin

Best thing about UD- great all around college. Great campus/town, likeable students, great education for a good value, there are things to do and get involved in. I would stop the school from getting so involved with Greek life. Right size. I get positive responses when people hear that I graduated from UD. I spent most of my junior and senior year on main street. Colelge town. Administration- it depends. Some people were very helpful and some were not. I had some professors who I really did not care for and that makes the classes much less enjoyable. Controversy on campus- safety issues and Greek life issues Yes there is school pride. I will always remember my entire experience at UD- homecomings, being in a sorority, winning the football championship my freshman year, and everything else. Complaints- dining hall food isn't good, dorms aren't nice/too far from things

Sarah

I live on Main St so I spend most of my time around there. It is so nice being so close to campus AND the restaurants and shops.

Jessie

I love UD more than I thought I would. Our campus is beautiful and well kept. Main St. is definitly the best thing about UD. It's at the center of everything and gives UD its character.

Paige

Perfect size, great business school, turns into a bar school when you're 21. Don't try to get into bars if you're not. Main street has great shops and restaurants, UD police/ newark police are ridiculous and it's impossible to not get in trouble at least once.

Julie

I love that UD is a "college town" The buildings are beautiful, and campus is maintained well (the grass is always green, etc.) I love that main street is a place filled with restaurants, stores, and bars -- you will always see people you know and shops that appeal to the college student. There is also a great public safety system BUT i wish there were cabs that we could pay for -- that would make traveling a lot more safe and a lot less of a hassle at night. Also, there is NOT enough parking at UD.

Alex

I think UD is definitely the right size school for me. Its not too big, but not too small at the same time. I think there is a good amount of diversity on campus which is nice considering I came from a very homogeneous high school. I think the town of Newark is cute and nice, however I think it could use some improvements. It gets boring after a while, I'd like to see some more different establishments that cater to students. Parking is terrible at UD. Many lots are inconveniently located and parking is extremely expensive and difficult to find at certain times.

Katie

I think our school is a great size with a great reputation. On campus I'm usually with friends or studying. I think the police in the area are a bit ridiculous busting parties instead of worrying about dangerous crimes (robbery, rape, and the use of weapons). I would say there is a fair amount of school pride.

Amanda

UD is just the right size. People hear that UD is a great school. I think its a college town. There is school pride.

Shelby

The best thing about UD is the students. They are basically all normal. There is not one specific "type" but most people are laid back and not too snooty or weird. If there was one thing I would change it would be the number of townies that hang around Newark. I love the University of Delaware but I hate the state. I think the school is just the right size but it needs more boys. When I tell people I go to UD they usually say thats pretty cool and they ask if i know other people who they know go there. It is a college town but there's not much of a "town" mostly just one block of main street with a few places to eat and maybe 4 bars. I do not really have a problem with the UD administration. I like that they are trying to raise the bar and make the school more elite. There have been race relations problems on campus where minority students felt violated by other students who dressed up for a theme party. It was pretty ridiculous and the minority students took it way too far. I think there is a lot of school pride, not quite as much as other bigger schools, but a good amount. There really isn't anything unusual about UD. The experience that I will never forget is my study abroad experience in South Africa. I think the most frequent complaints are about the alcohol policy that is way too strict.

Nick

best thing about UD is its closeness to big cities and it's reputation. I would want the school to have more advisers for students who want to do something after college. Good college town, although the town could be more supportive of the school. Lots of school pride. Admin is okay here, but not too great. I spend most of my time at my off campus house, which is big here by the way. Lots of off campus aprtmnts, and houses. Most of them have parties but so does greek life so you can do whatever you choose. One memory is freshman year itself and meeting so many people and just being a naive "freshman". Most complaints here are about cops, but they have gotten better.

Erin

I think UD is the perfect size for me. Not too many students that you dont feel like you know anyone, or too little people that you see the same people all the time. I have a lot of people from my high school that go here, and I never really see them unless i choose to. I spend most time at my apartment, and before i lived in one, i spent most in my dorm, well and of course in class. UD's administration has been very good so far, I have not had a teacher I hated or that I felt was not educated enough to teach.

Erica

The best thing about UD are all of the people. There are so many different clubs, groups, teams, there is always something to do and awesome people to meet. You never have to hang out with the same people ever because there are so many people to meet everyday! One thing I would change is how spread out the campus is. That would mean a smaller enrollment, which would lose some of the diversity, but I think a close knit campus would be awesome! When I tell people that I go to UD, I either heat, "Oh, I applied there!" , "That school is so much fun" or "Oh, that is so awesome! I hear thats a really nice school!" ...i love that! I think Main Street is awesome and tons of fun! The best place to live and be.

Connie

Some people might think this school is too large, but I think it's perfect. You always recognize someone everywhere you go.

Alexandra

College town Great People GORGEOUS campus Lots of school pride Good academic rep Great Main Street

meg

The best thing about UD is that it's a big school but it has a hometown feel.Being located on Main Street helps me feel connected to the real world. It is a little big, but I think it fits right in with the perfect college experience. People always compliment me on how smart I must be when i tell them I go here. Most of my time on camous is spent either in class, the library, or the CSB. I don't think that there is enough school pride- the school could do more to help boost it. I will always remember my freshman year living in Rodney- it was the best year by far- and I will never forget the friends and memories I made that year. The most frequent student complaints are that class sizes are too big and that teachers don't really make an effort to get to know their students

Jen

best thing is greek life, i will always remember my sorority and the amazing girls i have met. the parking here is ridiculous, you can never get a spot and its super expensive if you do.

Kathryn

I love UD because it is not too small and is not to big. It has so much diversity and any individual can grow and achieve their life goals. There are an infinite amount of opportunites here at UD and I wish I took the time to experience more of them. After having joined a sorority I have truly met some of my best friends for life. It does make the campus smaller and sometimes I feel like im limiting myself to one group but there are only so many people you can meet. UD has a great reputation and no one has ever said something bad about this school to me. There is a ton of school pride especially with our football teams recent success. I have had so many wonderful experiences here and I hope that I can only continue to add to these memories.

Terry

-The best thing about the school is the campus. -I would change the dining halls and make them better. -Just right. -People tend to hear mainly good things about UD. -I spend my time on campus primarily at my house or my friends houses. Sometimes trabant and other than that at class. -College town, hands down. -I think the strike system is flawed and the administration has a lot of room for improvement but UD is a great school regardless.

Megan

I think a more competitive football team would really give the school a huge boost. It's a big school with a small town feel, which I think is perfect. Big enough so you don't know everyone but small enough to feel as though you belong, that it's home. Main Street is great, very accessible for students and fun options to eat, shop, drink. Perfect for bar crawls. The campus is beautiful and the walk from Perkins to Memorial in the Spring or Fall is the best way to put a smile on your face.

Jen

The best thing about the University of Delaware is how all of the students love life. Everyone I have met here genuinely just enjoys living and a good time. Whether students are at a football game or eating lunch at Trabant, they love Delaware and the best friends they have met here.

Kristen

The best thing about UD is there are always new people to meet. I would change the singing in Trabant every Wednesday afternoon. I love how big it is. People always just ask how I like it. I spend most of my time in my apartment or in class. Main street is great but I wish there was more around here to shop. I don't really know anything about the administration. The last one I can think of was with the Cinco de Mayo party last year. I feel like our school pride could be improved. Nothing unusual. All of my experiences in Chi Omega. I don't hear that many complaints.

christine

i love that UD always has something going on. I think our school is a perfect size. If i could change one thing it would be that more people dormed. People are impressed when i tell them i go to UD. i spend most time in library a college town. there is a lot of school pride.

Anna

i hate our gym... for school of over 15,000 undergrads its pretty lame. the treadmills are always broken, there's usually a line to even get in the door because they're over max capacity for the small two rooms its in... i pay enough money to this school that i shouldn't have to wait twenty minutes to get on a treadmill or fifteen minutes to even get in the gym. alot of people buy memberships to local gyms in the area but its annoying because most of them are not walking distance from campus and that's not something you should have to pay extra for.

Ryan

The best thing about UD is all the different people you get to meet. One thing i'd change is the size of the gyms provided by the university. UD is just the right size. I haven't really ever noticed a certain reaction of people when I tell them I go to UD. I spend most of my time in my apartment or at the gym. Newark is a college town. I don't have an opinion of UD's administration, I've never met any of the people that work there. There was a rapist on the campus who was breaking into girls' houses and waiting for them to come home, but he got caught last fall. There is a great deal of school pride here. I wouldn't say there is anything unusual about UD. One experience I'll always remember is joining my Fraternity. All the students that i've been in contact with say we need better Dining Halls.

Kristen

The best thing about UD is that it feels like home. You immediately feel warm and welcome and like it's where you are supposed to be, and there's something for everyone. If I could change something, it would be how expensive it is. UD is just right. People are generally pleased when I say I go to UD and tell me it's a good school. Most of my time on campus is in class, or in my apartment with my roommates. It definitely has a college town. UD's administration is pretty good, and if you have a problem with someone, you can easily find someone else. The most recent controversy was the noose found in front of a building, or the ResLife situation. UD is HUGE on school pride. Nothing really unusual about UD. I'll always remember freshman year and meeting everyone. Most frequent complaint is the way to sign up for classes and there not being enough sections.

Lauren

The best thing about UD is the beautiful campus and everyone is friendly. The school is the PERFECT size. It is definitely a college town. Administration is great, especially in the business school. Stdudent complaints: Don't even try to use a fake id. VERY STRICT bar scene.

lauren

I think our school is just the right size and my favorite thing about it are the amazing people i've met here. many adults reactions are that they think i'm a party girl but people my own age know at least three people who go there and have heard all good things about it. most of my time is spent in class or at my apartment. it's definitely a college town. i think the administration is great. school pride is average. the experience i'll always remember are the random times with my best friends, whether it be a fun night we had, going to the footballs games, or just hanging out in the dorm. a lot of students complain about parking

Megan

UD is the perfect size for me and offers a lot of ways to get involved. I would change their judicial system. it is too strict. People react by saying "where is that?" or "thats a party school!" There is not much school pride at all. I will always remember my experiences as a Chi Omega.

keith

the best thing is that there is almost always something to do...the size is just right....there is a decent amount of school pride...i will always remember homecomings

Allie

Whenever I tell people that I go to UD they ALWAYS say that they have heard amazing things about the school and that everyone they knew that went there LOVED it. At UD, and Newark, DE in general they are really bad at plowing the streets when it snows! Most frequent student complaints include the library not being open late enough. Our campus is the PERFECT SIZE, it has a large enough campus that you can meet new people everytime you go out, but small enough that you don't feel like it is so overwhelming and you can't walk everywhere.

Jenna

The best thing about UD is that there are so many things to get involved in...club sports, greek life, student organizations, jobs etc. I wish it were more diverse. UD is the perfect size...not too large so you feel like a number, but not too small so that you feel like you know everyone. I spend most of my time in Willard Hall...the education building. It is definitely a college town. UD's administration seems to be improving. The new president is very involved. Freshman orientation on diversity was the most recent controversy. Everyone is loves the fighting blue hens. I will always remember Homecoming and football tailgates. Parking on campus is a HUGE problem.

Emma

I love the size of the school.. it's a small state school. I'd improve the public transportation on campus, but it doesn't create a big problem. I'm very proud to go to UD. Everything you need is on Main St, so the fact that it's not too near any cities isn't a problem.

Ashley

i like the size of UD, not too big but still large enough that you are always meeting new people. great greek life- greek week, mixers, fraternitys... all lots of fun. biggest controversy that i can remember was the rapist, a few girls were raped... not sure if they ever caught him. UD's brick campus is awesome :)

nicole

I love how it is a big school. The buildings are so nice and it sut feels like "this is college"

Alison

a lot of opportunities. parking. just right. well. classes or my apt. college town. good and bad. ? yes

Megan

Best thing about UD is the Student Body - size is perfect (won't get lost in a sea of students) but you still will meet new people as a Senior! Worst thing - Tuition Cost (although most student's parents pay their tuition) and Lack of Parking! People usually respect UD, some think it's a party school because it used to be like 10 years ago - now not so much School Pride is pretty good - fun football/tailgaiting season, other sports not too much school spirit, cool mascot :o)

Alex

I love the campus. I would the number of foreign, hard-to-understand TAs. The size is just right. Everyone says wow that's a good school or name someone they know who went there. I spend most of my time in class while on campus. We have a cute Main Street that is definitely college friendly. Most of the administration is really nice and is dedicated to helping the students succeed. The biggest recent controversy is about public safety carrying guns. Yes there is a lot of school pride, especially at homecoming. UD is just beautiful and a good school and a lot of fun. Everyone is so nice, in general. I will always remember the vigil on the Green after the Virginia Tech massacre. The students really came together and comforted each other. Students complain being too busy.

Alex

1. best thing about UD: once you join greek life, sports teams or other extracurricular groups, the campus shrinks down and you start to see people you know everywhere! 2. keep more bars open, utilize ud/newark cops to help keep parties under control without punishing the attendees, don't use greek groups or teams to punish those participating 3. perfect size!! 4. people still think its a party school, but the academics are starting to speak for themselves. 5. loved hanging out in trabant during class changes to people watch or run into people. kates and grottos on a nice day outside 6. college town!!! 7. they make a lot of rules that they refuse to break even if there is a legitimate reason. you can only take certain classes if you are that major, which restricts people who just have an intersted in that subject to take that class, even if there is room 8. noise violations - newark police started issuing tickets and fines to people if there was 'too much noise' coming from their house or apt. this noise did not always come from crazy paties, though. people got in trouble for having a group of friends overlistnening to moderatly volumed music during the day instead of spending their resources on protecting UD from robberies and rapes. 9. medium - a lot more when our football team is doing well. 10. we have a 5-week winter session that you can go abroad, take more classes at ud, work, intern or go home. 10. everything about being greek!! - rush, greek weeks, homecomings 11. parking tickets and not enough bars

melissa

Best thing about UD is that it is a small school atmosphere at a large school. I think that the size of the school is perfect, you don't get lost in the numbers but you don't see the same people all day everyday. When I tell people I went to UD, everyone seems to have a great opinion of the school, but you do get the occasional "Why would you go to college in DELAWARE?" comment. I think that overall it is a pretty good college town, could use a few more places for going out (bars, restaurants, etc). But Main Street is great. I think that UD's administration is getting much better with our new President. I think that UD students have a large amount of pride in our school, especially when the different sporting teams are doing well. Being a part of my sorority, Chi Omega, is the experience that I will remember the most about college because it got me involved in so many different aspects of the university and allowed me to meet so many people that I never would have had the opportunity to meet.

Melanie

Overall, I absolutely loved UD. I miss it so much-my friends, the college lifestyle, some professors, my apartment, my roommate, sorority involvement, and I miss everything about Main Street. UD is a great school-it's a beautiful campus, has a good reputation, plenty of resources for students, and plenty of fun to be had. I loved the size of the school-always new people to meet but you always had smaller groups of friends amongst 17,000+ students. When I look back on my college experience as a whole (which is really sad that I can do that now), I can't identify anything missing from UD. I honestly feel that I couldn't have made a better choice and I really miss being there!

Peter

Overall, I found the University of Delaware to be an extremely positive experience. I have no regrets whatsoever about my time at the school. I found the size to be just right, I could relate with a large majority of the student body. As a Geography major, I participated in a few projects in which I discovered the relations between the town and gown were not overly spectacular. While Delaware has all the components that make up a "college town," because of the poor relations between the student body and the local residents, I think it takes away from the feel of a college town. I think that the residents should have taken more pride in the school and conversely, the students should have given more respect to the community. In my opinion, building such a bond would increase the feeling of Newark as a "college town." At the same time, the local youth population in Newark and the surrounding areas created major animosity between the student body and the local population. "Townies" frequently created disturbances at UD gatherings and justifiably became stereotyped.

Kyle

The best thing at Delaware is the people. The professors are always open to discussion in the classroom and in office hours. The size of the school was perfect. I went to a much larger school as a freshman and never regretted transfering to a medium sized school. People don't think very high of the school right now (but that may be because I live in New York amongst NYU and Columbia graduates). I spent most of my time with friends. The school work wasn't ovrly intense so I was able to spend a lot of time hanging out in the dorms or in off-campus houses or bars. The current administration is a joke. I'm not sure about Harker as I wasn't there when he was, but many of the higher ups don't know how to handle controvoursey, racial relations or the media. The is a lot of school pride, which goes to the next question. The unusual thing about Delaware is that you feel like you are a part of something. I felt like I was part of a community with the students or professors. The one experience I'll always remember is hanging out at Grottos along the patio, drinking 22s between classes.

Brian

Best part of UD is the people and the education. Pretty strong. I'd change hours of pretty much everything at the university. Gym hours, dining hours, library hours. UD is pretty backwards at that. Just right. "You go to UD? Good school." In a classroom or at the gym. College town...Newark is awesome. They do a lot right but need more student input. FIRE. A lot of bullshit on FIRE's part. They slammed Harker when he deserved none of it. Yes. No. The partying. Food stinks, too much work.

Amanda

Everything about UD is great--the friends I made, the campus, the classes and professors and the bars! Although UD is a large school, I never felt that it was too big, in fact, I felt like I knew everyone. You see the same people around all the time--it has a really small feel. One of my favorite things about UD was Main Street. Newark, DE, is definitely a college town. Main Street is loaded with good restaurants, shopping, bars, etc. I have absolutely nothing but good memories from my time at the University of Delaware. Some of the best times included day drinking at Grotto's on a nice day, Chapel Fest, BBQs and house parties and of course nights out at Kate's and Shaggy's (which is no longer there, sadly).

Nicole

I love the campus here I think the school size is perfect. Freshmen year the school felt huge, but by senior year you get to know a lot of people and the school feels a lot smaller. I spend most of my in memorial hall because that is where my classes are. It is definitely a college town. There is a lot of school pride, I love walking around campus and seeing people in UD t-shirts and sweatshirts, also going to school sporting events is a lot of fun. My favorite experience at UD was study abroad to Australia/New Zealand.

Jimbo

Delaware is essentially the perfect school - it's small enough that you run into people you know all the time, but it's also big enough that if you didn't want to run into someone (that one night stand's roommate who walked in on you), you can avoid them as well. There's a beautiful campus, great night life, and fun, relaxed people. Freshman and Sophomore years are fun, but I think you have the most fun after you move off campus, which I would HIGHLY encourage you to do for your Junior and Senior years. The thing I miss the most about Delaware is the girls - Delaware has an absurd porportion of attractive ladies. When "tanning" season is in, and it's a nice day, I'd highly recommend going for a walk around the beach haha.

Elena

The best thing about UD is the location. I love how I can be home in an hour. It's also only a few hours away from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. I think the size is just right. I graduated with 750 other seniors, so I was used to large classes and many students. I also came from the suburbs so I was used to being in a town. (Actually, I think Newark is smaller than my hometown.) I spend most of my time in my apartment and the library. When I was in the dorms, though, I spent some time studying on The Green. It's really beautiful during the Spring. It is definitely a college town. On the weekends on Main Street, you'll see all the 21-year-olds and older going to the bars. I think UD's administration is doing an okay job. I don't really have any complaints. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the whole FIRE-diversity training thing. There are people on campus who have a lot of school pride and people who don't. But I think for the most part, people do have school pride. Homecoming is always fun.

Cody

UD is a great place, I couldn't imagine a better college. The best thing about it is that it's both a large and small school. It's not too large that you get lost in the numbers but big enough that you don't feel suffocated. Also, Newark is a fun college town filled with bars and restaurants. The biggest problem with UD would definitely be the relationship between the students and the "townies." Newark has gotten much more dangerous in the past five years with crime increasing. It's not a bad place to live, students just have to be more cautious at night. The campus is beautiful and I'm sure living in dorms has gotten significantly better since the new complexes were built but I couldn't wait to move off campus. There are plenty of off-campus options.

Meg

The best thing about Delaware is the quintessential/classic college experience it offers. We have our little Main Street, beautiful green, large but not dominant Greek life, solid academics, a good bar scene and we surely know how to party. If I could change one thing I would switch the 60/40 girl/guy ratio in the other direction. Good guys are scarce. When I tell people I go to UD they either don't know much about it, have heard there is a good social life, or "have a friend who goes there as LOVES it!" I spend most of my time on Main Street. While I spent more time in Trabant while I lived on campus, not that I live off Main Street I definitely spend more time there. UD is definitely in a college town. I loved Roselle, the former president who just retired this summer, but jury's still out about Harker. He seems nice enough, but I'll wait to see what he does before I judge him. The biggest controversy of recent was the closing of The Stone Balloon, the historic bar and music venue. They had mug night every Thursday, and I think the bar scene took a hit when it closed. There is definitely a lot of school pride. Kids are proud to tell everyone they go to UD. Football games are fun, though many just make it to the parking lot to tailgate. When we went to the championship this year students traveled to Chattanooga TN to see the game. I can't think of anything that is too unusual. I will always remember watching the championship game at Grotto's (even though we lost horribly). The most frequent complaints are that there aren't enough bars on Main Street, we don't recycle, and it's not safe.

Alexis

The best thing about UD? There is literally something for everyone. If you just get out of that dorm room and research some stuff going on, you'll realize how many groups, activities, sports, etc. there are to get involved with. You can start your own club if you want. You can go see new movies in our theater, see special acts like Jon Stewart and Dane Cook. You can eat at our famous restaurant Vita Nova which has been given 4 stars and run by the hotel restaurant and instutional management students. You can get a job on main street, at the mall, or on campus. You can write for the newspaper, become involved with a club that reflects your academic interest, play on an intramural sport, take dance lessons, take music lessons, take art lessons. Anything you have in mind, we have it. One thing I would change about the school...the parking. It seems stupid but it honestly is a mess and very frustrating. Where ever you park you have to worry about getting a ticket. But if thats the worst thing about UD...well then I'd say we have it pretty good here. My school is just right. People hear 16,000 undergrads and almost die. They think it is ridiculously too big. I think it's perfect. If you give it a chance you will soon realize how small it really is. As the days, weeks, months, and years go by you recognize the same people in your classes, out at night, or just walking around. You create how big or small it is...how many colleges can offer you that? People always react positively when I say I go to UD. They either say "Oh wow that school is so hot right now everyone I know is applying, but its hard to get in." or "oh I hear UD is a lot of fun and everyone I know that goes there loves it" and of course "UD...thats in Newark right? As in Newark NJ?" As an ungrad I spent most of my time at my resident hall/appartment, my friends places, Sharp lab (for physics) and of course the beautiful and wonderful main street. COLLEGE TOWN 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} UD has a rather new administration this year since President Roselle has recently retired and President Harker has taken over. My parents are co-presidents of the Parent Board here and I have had the pleasure to meet everyone high up in administration. They are without a doubt the nicest and most intellegent people I have ever met. Although it may be hard to show with a larger school, they really do care about the students. Every morning President Roselle took a walk around campus with his wife, Louisa, to show his love for the school and its students. Roselle has brought in a ridiculous amount of money for research and renovations. There are new buildings going up everywhere for classes, administration, and dorming. There are so many opportunities to do research for the school and GET PAID FOR IT. All the Deans are so pleasant and constantly ask me what THEY can do to improve their school. The new President, Dr. Harker, started off by going around to each dining hall and eating with the students for weeks to talk to them, get to know them, show them he's real, and ask them what he can do to improve their experience at UD. There is nothing bad to say about the administration and if you can think of anything I challenge you to let me know...I'm sure I can prove you wrong. Biggest recent controversy...this past fall a former student of UD wrote for ESPN (I think) that UD is racist and refuses to play Delaware State because we don't want to be associated with them. There are so many things wrong with this assumption that if I get into it, you'll be reading for hours. Besides the fact that the person is a former UD student which shows how pathetic and disgraceful he is, the accusation was completely out of line and just plane wrong. To prove so we did play Delaware State this past fall in Football...and beat the shit out of them. There is a TON OF PRIDE at UD...from the students walking around campus with UD clothing on to the pride shown at our sports games. Just go to a UD football game and you'll see how much pride we have...but get there early or you'll find no seats. UD has an unusual smell. I'm not kidding. It has been around since I started school here and I'm pretty sure longer than that. There is some talk that it comes from mushroom farms down south, but who really knows. It is the worst in the cold winter mornings. You get used to it though I will always remember the month I studied abroad in Australia and New Zealand. UD is ranked #1 in study abroad. We go to every continent and over 100 countries. It was the best month of my life. Other than that...graduation...I will never forget it. The most frequent complaints from students are about the parking...like I addressed above.
