University of Denver Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Caitlin

Classmates are very helpful, knowledgable, and for the most part extremely nice.

Clayton

Work hard, play hard.

Alison

They are smart.

Erin

Most of them were very out going. This school is mostly made up of upper middle class, white kids, but I know that they were trying to diversify that when I left. They were mostly very nice and very driven. They all expected great things out of life and high high goals.

colby

Teams, hardworkers, smart, outgoing, interactive

Casey

My classmates were academically diverse, mostly willing to work hard and seeking out new knowledge and experiences.

Mark

Upper middle class to very wealthy, often don't care about their studies although there are many who do.

Margy

We have active students who are not too absorbed in studying and keeping ahead of their work that they cannot have a social life

Kate

White, wealthy and midly motivated.

Friendly, active, fun, sociable, hard-working, studius, party-goers, normal people, individuals.

Stephanie

Dylan

Artistic, energenic, creative, and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Shaun

Students at DU work hard but party harder.

Eliana

Students at DU are motivated, encouraging and determined to succeed in classes, group projects and the world around them. There is something to learn from every person one gets to know at DU because of different backgrounds, beliefs, interests and personalities.

Edith

Outgoing, committed, professional, diverse, driven, intelligent.

Natasha

Like I mentioned before I basically hate the student body at DU. If your not rich, white and drive a BMW you might as well pack up... As many are all to aware DU lacks ethnicty, and I definitely understand why. No one in their right mind would want to come to this campus if they were of color, you would immediately feel out of place. DU NEEDS TO WORK ON THAT...

Tiffany

I would say DU has a pretty tolerant campus, but it is not diverse. It is 85{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} white. But the people who are here all get along, regardless of color, religion, etc. There are definitely a lot of international students. Students are pretty politically active. The numbers say it is a pretty conservative student body, I personally feel more of a liberal presence. Most of the students do come from very wealthy backgrounds though, keep that in mind.

Alexandria

sometimes I feel like lower middle class students might feel a bit out of place. As far as what students wear...girls wear Uggs and guys are usually wearing sports stuff or polos. Definitely higher end clothing; I wear sweatpants, basketball shorts and sometimes pajamas. I'm all about comfort. I think most of DU students are liberal/democrats, and it seems to be sort of an unwritten law that everyone agrees on. I never ran into anyone arguing over political views. Overall, I think a great portion of the kids at DU care about money. It's a really expensive school, so must students have wealthy families where money is very important.

Robin

I have experienced relatively no diversity especially in the business school. If you're looking for varrying groups of people with passionate and varrying ideas or different tastes in music or people who enjoy different passtimes, look somewhere else. Most students are supported by their parents, live in dorms or houses in the surrounding neighborhoods. Most listen to popular hip-hop and go to house parties. I am sure that I am overgeneralizing a bit but I've really struggled to find the types of people you expect at a university. Where are the hippies? Where are the political activists? punk rockers? philosophers? The culture here is very one track.

Reed

Queer community supported by university but sometimes looked down upon by students. If you are queer, you will want to consider larger, more liberal colleges. This is not to say that the university is religious, students have just lived sheltered lives and are inexperienced in dealing with different types of people.

Becca

I don't feel like there is a great amount of diversity at DU. Most students seem to be from middle to upper-class families. However, that being said-I have greatly enjoyed getting to know all different types of people:different personalities, different interests, views on life, religion. So in a way, DU is pretty diverse. Most people dress fairly nice for class-even if girls wear sweat pants, their hair and make-up is done.

Cam

DU has one of the most diverse student populations that I have ever been a part of. There are students here from all over the world (and I don't mean one or two from all over but there are large groups of students from everywhere). There is a strong LGBT community at DU and Greek Life is very big on campus. Most DU students are not from Denver. There is a large international population of students at DU and people from all over the states. Due to the nature of the school there are a lot of students with wealthy financial backgrounds. There are students that are just making it financially... either way both groups are have a great time at DU and everyone is part of the DU Community. DU has a very active student body politically, locally, nationally, and internationally. DU students do a wonderful community event called Homeless Connect that helps the homeless population of Denver. The law students are very active in trying to make changes locally and nationally. Students coming out of the international business program at Daniels are making an impact on the world community every day.

Amanda

DU is pretty preppy. As the business school is the dominant school, students tend to dress more preppy and in a more conservative manner.

Ashley

much of the student body is middle to upper class white people from a relatively conservative political background. this was one thing that kind of bothered me. i think that the campus has the ability to be much more diverse and i think that would be a great thing.

Adrienne

A good percentage of the population does come from wealthier backgrounds, but I've met hardly any people who are spoiled rich. People are pretty friendly, smile at people they know walking by and students who go to DU tend to be happy there. It's not an incredibly political campus, but as the election is approaching, people are getting more and more into it. As far as liberal or conservative, there are plenty of both. I used to think it was a more conservative campus because of the backgrounds of many students, but I found it's about 50/50.

Jess

We need more Diversity racially, but in all the people the go to DU have drive and ambition. They are all very different thought maybe their skin color doesn't show it!

Chris

Most DU students are either from CO or all over the country. Most lead active lifestyles, and follow a work-hard party-hard ethic. There is a large range, financially, of the students' background at DU, it just all depends on when and where and how you surround yourself with fellow students. There is little to no political activism, and most all students are okay with that.

Torry

White, I mean really white. You will find that there are only a handful of students on campus that are not from the states. The majority of these students either play sports or are only here for a short amount of time. Definately an upper class school. Do not be surprised if the kid sitting next to you in your business class is talking about the chain of restaurants he will be taking over as soon as he graduates.

Daniel

Most DU students come from rich families. There is very little diversity on campus, but everybody accepts everybody else and each group finds a niche.

Alex

Im from Boulder, so the DU culture wasn't too foreign to me. We smoke a whole lot (not cigs...), and we ski. Thats a bout it. I love my friends here, and i've literally met like 3 people all year that I don't like

Liz

There is not much racial diversity here. There is a strong religious group of Young Life if you are interested. I think anyone that is an extreme hippie would feel out of place here. Some students, like athletes, wear sweats to class, and some others just wear jeans or shorts and a shirt. There are alot of school logo clothes, and there are always those people who dress up every day. All types of students interact, but I feel that within greek life there is a deeper bond. Most students seem to be from different places. Alot from Colorado and Minnesota. There also seem to be alot of international students. Most people come from wealthy backgrounds. Students are politically active and there always seems to be some proactive activity going on. There seem to be more conservative students, but there are a good amount of liberals. Not many talk about how much they will earn one day, but since our school gets so much funding, this shows me that alumni have gone on to be successful, which means we are being set up for that too.

Kevin

Especially compared to the high school that I attended, DU could hardly be described as diverse. However, DU is making strides towards promoting diversity on campus. We have a center for multicultural excellence that pursues awareness of the different backgrounds represented on campus. Even in spite of a lack of quantitative diversity, however, students are very accepting of just about any background. By virtue of the cost of the university, most students are of a higher socioeconomic status, but there are certainly plenty of students on scholarships (myself included). Communities tend to form around similar interests, academic or otherwise. Often, a person's closest friends will be those on their floor, many of which are organized into living and learning communities (based on shared interests such as social justice, environmentalism, leadership, or creativity & entrepreneurship).

Kelly

The student body at DU could be more diverse. There aree quite some issues that come up, whether they are racial, religious, LGBT, which I must, honestly, because of my experience, attribute to the conservative population on campus, somewhat. Some conservative students on the DU students have the tendency of stirring up some strong feelings and controversy because of their close-minded and backwards points of view. But also, there could be more unity on the DU campus if we all could try to understand each other and be civil in our conversations.

Joanna

Unfortunately, a poor person would definitely feel out of place at DU. I come from a middle class background and I have a scholarship and I feel a little out of place and even resentful of the students driving BMWs. Some girls get ridiculously dressed up for class; mini skirts, heels, designer bags. The student body tends to be a bit conservative, but there are definitely some radicals.

Sarah

DU is not extremely racially and ethnically diverse, but it is certainly welcome! I have never seen or heard of discrimination on campus. Obviously since DU is a private school, so there is a large amount of wealthy students, however; there are still students that attend DU with help of financial aid and accepting loans, I am not weathy and I am making it just fine! I think that students at DU are very politically aware and politically active, I think DU is a liberal school overall, but I think a vast majority of the students are conservative.

amelia

there is some religious involvement, but no pressure to join, same with racial groups i think anyone who does not like participating in social events like parties may fee out of place at du studnets wear everything from pajamas and sweats to nice business clothes to the same class I think that there should be more interaction between different types of students, du is definitely very cliquey there is the student athlete group, the fraternities and sorority group, the exchange student group, and the outdoor involvement group students are along the spectrum from liberal to conservative also people are from every type of financial background students definitely talk about how much they hope to make one day

Elena

Most DU students are from upper middle class families. Clothing on campus is a big marker of status, with many students wearing designer clothes. Basically if you are anything but white, upper middle class, able bodied, or heterosexual, you are likely to feel uncomfortable on campus. You will likely have to put up with people saying inflammatory, intolerant and offensive things in your classes, and sometimes the faculty does not step in to diffuse those comments.

Torry

THEYRE GREAT!

Amy

Lots of people here are well off but obviously this is a large enough school where there is some variety, you can find at least one of everybody. The student body is not very diverse -- despite the many different ethnicities portrayed on the website or fliers. The students here all had to work hard to get here so they, on average, are above the general involvement/competitive/intelligent level.

Rebecca

A lot of DU students are from Colorado. However, there is a variety of groups on campus that offer a place for every student to fit in and become involved in the DU community. There are sports, clubs, councils, and other groups in almost every area a person could want to be involved in. This allows students to meet and make friends with other students easily, allowing them to fit in and feel more comfortable here at DU.
