What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Tiffany

Growing up with limited resources, it taught me the value of getting an education. Upon completing my degree I will be the first to graduate from college in my family. I hope this will influence my children the importance of getting a degree. I see myself as a determined individual; things were never handed to me, I had to earn them. Growing up had its obstacles being the oldest of four, and only having one parent work a low paying job. This made things very stressful. There was one point in my life I wanted to give up and not finish my high school education. In spite of this incident I knew I wanted to do more with my life. Over the last 5 ½ years, I have worked for an energy company. I started out being a mail clerk and slowly over the years I have worked my way up to an analyst. This may be merely a stepping stone for some, but to me it signifies progress. Nonetheless I don’t want it to stop there, I know that a college degree would ensure that I could keep moving on with my goals of getting into management.

College has given me confidence to know that I can be successful. After being in college for a year my goals developed and changed. I now want to finish college with an accounting degree and earn a job at one of the top 5 companies. College has also helped me to grow up and deal with problems on my own. Going to college in a different state means my parents aren’t around when something goes wrong. I’ve grown out of the bubble created by hometown and have started to form more worldly views about life. I’m no longer a little girl, I want to have meaning in the world and do something to improve it. I’ve been exposed to helping the community through my sorority and understand the impact a small group can make on people in need. College has given me a chance to find a place of my own and create my own path in life. With the professors and advisors at DU guiding me I’m finding that I have the potential to be successful if I take the chance and run with it.

I got married at 19 years old and spent years working at jobs that paid very little and left me emotionally and physically drained. I returned to school not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. Over the past two years I have learned so much about myself. I was raised in a difficult family situation and didn't have much self-confidence. I have learned that I am an intelligent individual with a lot of potential. I now have a very healthy level of confidence and my future looks bright. I feel like I'm headed in such a positive direction and that I finally have a purpose in life. I'm amazed at how many opportunities that have opened up. I always dreamed of going to the University of Denver, but never thought it would happen. Through a lot of hard work I kept my grades up and am now there. If you would have told me before that I would be in school, I wouldn't have believed it, but here I am. At this point, the sky's the limit. I am not closing any doors. I'm open to wherever life takes me.

In my college experience I learned to strive to excel above my peers and it creates a self-imposed challenge for me and I am very competitive. Last semester I took the initiative to become one of the class leaders, in doing this my group received more extra credit on the assignment than the assignment was worth. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others to be their very best as I work my way to the top because I am the type of person who want to see everyone around me at their best because it challenges me to be greater. I learned the little push you can give a person may be all they needed to continue there education knowing someone else is rooting for them. I am a happy single mother of a three year old who knew her alphabet before she was 18 months. It has been valuable for me to attend college because I am trying to expand my education so I can provide a better than average life for her, as well as myself. I am taking every step to ensure that I can attend college next semester. Thankf for your time.

The most I have gotten out of my college experience is the relationships that I have formed with other students and faculty. Since each class size is almost always less than fifty students, it is important to speak up during class and create bonds with those around you because chances are you will have class with the same students again. Not only does sharing your knowledge help but communicating your strengths and weaknesses with those around you will also benefit everyone. Every class you have to work in a group and most groups survive through communication. Creating relationships with faculty has gotten my very far as well. Taking the time to go into office hours and learning about the people who are teaching me for the next couple of years may take time out of my day but it helps me in the long run. Teachers are the ones writing your reccomendations for jobs and internships and by making relationships with him, it has gotten me much further in the secondary education than I could have ever hoped for.

Education is a lifetime investment. My college experience has been a growth in knowledge and understanding of the world circumstance. Education has helped me become well-rounded and literate. Also, I have developed many meaningful relationships, giving me great memories. College is my first priority investment of time, hard work, energy and money. With careful planning and financial support to help me attend an institute of higher education, I can experience the realization of many of my life dreams.

Jeremiah

My college experience has been of value to me because it has allowed me to learn about new concepts and subjects, many of which I merely skimmed in earlier levels of education. It has broadened my horizons, giving me the opportunity to study the things I want to, the disciplines that truly interest me and work toward my degree and eventual career. If nothing else it has kept my mind active and up-to-date, as it would surely dull and become rusty if I had not continued my schooling after gradutaing high school. At this point in time my college experience has not been very lengthy or extensive, but I can l already recognize the advantages it has granted me.

Kelly

There is so much that I've gotten out of my college experience so far. I think the most important experience was the learning curve of being away from home and having to learn to take care of myself and not to rely on others. Not only have I learned to do this but I've learned that it pay offs to start studying days in advance of an upcoming test, to attend every class no matter how early in the morning it is or how boring it is because if you don't you'll end up being clueless later on. This university has been so valuable to attend for so many reasons, not just all the ones listed above, because this university is a community everyone is in the same boat whether or not they're a freshman or a senior. The professors make a difference and interact with the students (mostly because the class sizes tend to be small) you have floor get togethers in your dorm building to help you get to know your neighbors and RA. Basically this university is amazing.

I have met people from different walks of life with diverse stories to share. I have learned to become my own person. A person with an opinion and a brain. I know where I am and I know where I am going regardless of the milestones I may come across.

Stephanie

For me, college has always been a way to completely immerse myself in diversity and to learn as much I possibly can from students, faculty, and staff. I could not have picked a better school to attend than University of Denver. There is no other place where comradery is more present. Before I even set foot on campus, I had thousands of questions and I called at least twice a week. Everytime I called I was always greeted, helped, and treated as if I mattered. Since I have become a full fledged student, I have experienced the same friendliness with everyone on campus from the brilliant porofessors, to the financial aid department, to to the woman that sells coffee in the library. I have benefitted so much from the University of Denver. I feel at home and I feel that every penny that has been put towards my education here has been worth it a thousand times over.

Caryn

I have gotten much out of my college experience. I am truely grateful to have gone to Oakland Community College for my first two years as a college student, the environment was friendly and comfortable. I got much one on one help and guidance as requested and facaulty and students are always welcoming and friendly. I know that it was for a reason that I started out at this Comminity College. I not only saved a lot of money but also now have reached the place I am now, where I can say I am ready for the next chapter of my life. Going to this college has really helped in directing my future path. The classes in my Liberal Arts degree have really taught me a lot about who I am and where I plan to go with my future degree in Social Work. This college has taught me many life lessons as well as equipped me with the knowledge needed for my future. I am very pleased with the education that I recieved from my ongoing college experience and it only makes me that much more excited and ready for the next school that I plan to attend.

Shannon

My college experience is very valuable to my future and I treat it as such. My experience is fun and exciting yet it requires a lot of work. I am happy to complete the work and give my best effort because I know that I am planning for my future career and my life. My instructors are very well educated and experienced and I am lucky to be able to learn from them. I truly enjoy my classes. I am determined to be very successful. I am an excellent student. I study hard, I get good grades and I have excellent attendance. I am dedicated and hard-working. I get along great with my classmates and my instructors are impressed with my performance. I always give 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} on assignments and tests and my grades reflect my effort. I am eager to learn and I always pay attention in class. College is a fun and enriching experience and I do not take it for granted.

Kierra

I have gotten so many different things out of my college experience. The friends that I have made have been so valuble. They have been there when I needed someone to study with during finals week and they have equally been there when I needed someone to go out and have a drink with. Not only that, I have been able to acquire connections around every corner. My university hands its students so many different opportunites. I have been able to secure jobs through alumni connections and equally have been able to learn things that I will definitely be able to utilize right after graduation. My college experience has become a valuble part of my life, without it I would not be the person I am today or have the alumni connections and friends that are available around every corner.

Laura

College has been full of new experiences. I have learned a lot from my classes, but without the experiences to supplement them I would not feel as if I was getting the full benefit from a college education. Whether you attend a community college or an ivy league school you can get a good education, however the experiences you gather from attending a Universty rather than a small college are priceless. Everything I have been involved in taught me something, even going on a retreat to the mountains tied in our educatin in a fun ay while learning about the local vegetation. The support coming from faculty only adds to this factor. They are always willing to get you connected with the right thing, anywhere from snowboarding club to a chemistry study group. The social experiences have only taught me more; the college scene allows you to find yourself in a sea of lost people. This creates a sense of personal satisfaction that cannot come from just anywhere, going out and taking that next step towards independence while creating an education that allows for endless carreer opportunities is a one time shot that cannot have a price tag on it.

Wesley

I have made friends that will last me the rest of my life and have been given options and oppertunities rare to most students. I love the college I am at.

Lammi

From my college experience, I have meet a variety of people who have taught my to look at things in a different way. My college experience has also taught to me to be more active in life. I have meet people who have been to a variety of places and have had a lot of experiences. Thier experiences have made me realize that I haven't seen a lot. This has made me realize that I haven't seen a lot in my life. Going to the university of denver to attend school, will help me widen my horizons expecially because I am able to study abroad and see different sights.

Yiran

I learned a lot about how to make friends in a American college. As a international student, I always not so confindence for my english and that's why I always being silent at the class. Thanks for my good roomate, she helpe me to make a lot of realy good friend at class. I learned something like American Cultural and their young-speaking-way when I talked with them. I think the most important thing in a college is to make a life-long good friend and I hope I can do that in my following 3 years college life.

Jean

My college experience at Mira Costa Community College has given me insight into the value of education. Entering my second year, college has been triumphant, but a constant challenge. On average a person with a bachelor's degree earns one-million dollars more than a person without a degree. This stark difference is what has pushed me to maintain a competitive GPA of 3.74 and ensure that I transfer to a four year institution. My college experience has shown me that without a drive failure is imminent. Many students call community college a 'four year plan' because there is no push for them to finish. From their lack of consistentcy and effort, I strive to do better and compensate. I hope that my generation's lack will be dettered by all of us that show a drive and a spirit for what we strive to achieve. The value in my education is the opportunity that it brings and the inevitable success that is only permitted through the challenge of college. My only wish with this scholarship is to spread this value of education to those in other countries that do not have the priveledge of this experience.

I went to a very rigorous high school (and middle school) and was surrounded by students whose entire lives were dedicated to making the grade and getting into great colleges. Many of my classmates went on to ivy league schools and not a single one of us took the year off. The atmosphere at the University of Denver is different. I've watched people stumble into class drunk and I've watched people study in the library until it closes. Everyone has a different reason for being there. Some are there to graduate with a business degree so they can inherit the family business, others are there just to keep their parents off their back but few are there to forge their own way. I am one of those few students. I've realized that I have to work for what I want because it is not being handed to me.

Natasha

I have grown as a person through the interaction I have had at this university. There are numerous things I can say that I have taken away from going to this university. I can honestly say that I have learned to learn. What I mean by this is that I can walk away with the tool that will make me a successful person in the business world. I have learned how to take things and expand my knowledge on them. Not only have I learned to learn, but I have learned professor’s success and failures. The professors that I have encountered at the University of Denver have taught me more about education through their own experiences and knowledge. I will never forget what a professor quoted to me the last day of spring 2010 semester, "Do not be afraid of failure because it is what you do with failure that will make you a better person, and a person to respect and remember."

Jeffrey

I haven't started college yet but from what I have already experienced, you'll get to meet many wonderful people along the way. Everyone is friendly and the state itself provides many recreational ativities to do. I can guarantee that you won't get bored at Denver, Colorado.

Ariana

I have gotten the most I could out of my college experience thus far. It has made me become more of a responsible person, and has made me into more of an adult. It has taught me many new things that I am thankful for knowing now. I have made many new friends that I feel will be in my life for a very long time. Every day that I have attended has been valuable and worth all of the stressing and worrying that were done over assignments and financial aid problems. I wouldn't change anything even if I could.

Hannah

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience. I have truely learned who I a as a person and who I do and do not want to be. I have learned to become a good leader and to think out of the box. I have learned that it is okay to express what you are thinking even if others do not agree, because it is your opinion and for things to chang everyone needs to be heard. In that regard I have learned to understand where a person is coming from if I do not agree with them. Through my experiences at DU I have learned that being apart of a community is important and doing whatever you can for that community is very important. I know now that community service will always be apart of my future so that I can help whatever community I am apart of, whether it be big or small. I have learned many important lessons that I will always hold near and dear to my heart!

Jace

What I have gotten out of my college experience so far is that you have to work for what you want to get out of your studies. Nothing is given to you. All the opportunites are there for you to take and there are people willing to lend a hand an help you out if you are struggling. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Attending Chandler Gilbert was one of the best experiences in my lifetime. I was enrolled in classes such as Aircraft Systems for Pilots and Aircraft Powerplants, and other aeronautical classes. I loved the free feel to the campus. The feeling that I possessed while on campus wasn't like any other. In high school, you feel restricted to the things you can do, but in college, it is the exact opposite. Also, the classes I attended have given me valuable insight to the aviation industry. Now I can weigh my options. Should I continue in the Pilot Program, or should I go into Marketing? A life altering decision is soon to be made, and I don't have the slightest clue to which major will pull through to be my own. But, I cannot wait to return to Chandler Gilbert, or another school like it.

I haven't started college yet

After completing my first year at college I have to say I've grown into a much stronger woman. I've learned how vital it is to have discipline in my studies, and apply myself to my schoolwork. I've learned what a true friend really is. And I've learned the path I want to take for my future. I can't say that I wouldn't have learned all of these things if I hadn't chosen to attend the Univerisyt of Denver, but I can say with full confidence that the investment I'm making now in my education will be invaluable for my future.

Cory

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience so far. It has taught me to live on my own and be more responsible because I do not have my parents telling me to do things all of the time. I have been able to handle partying and school work well enough which is preparing me for the real world. In college I have had to balance school work,a job, and having fun. From balancing the three I have been able to develop scheduals and set apart time to get everything I need done, which is something I never did in high school.

Jennifer

Darton college is a small community college with many opportunities. They offer a variety of classes with many time options. This has been a huge help as I am trying to persue my Pharm. D. They offer many student activites to ensure that each student has a well rounded experience. The teachers and staff take an interest in the student and aim to help us reach success.

Kristen

My college experience has been a very interesting one. I started off at a school that I did not like, transfered to another school that I found I didn't like, and then finally ended up at the University of Denver. I wish that I had known what else was out there in terms of schools. Having moved so much has taught me to make friends quickly and be able to adapt to new environments. The friends that I have met at the University of Denver have made my college experience the best that it could possibly be. The professors that I have met have also been very influencial and helpful throughout my time at the University of Denver. They are always available, have a personal interest in their students, and want to the make the best out of students experiences. It has been valuable to attend because I have learned a lot about myself, what I want to do in life, and about different places and people. College has been a stable environment for me to grow.

Jorge

From my college experience I have learned the value of family. As I began college I had a mentality that I was there to get out of the house and be away from my parents. Yet as time passed I began to see how my family was the backbone to my education. If it wasn't for their support I would not be able to attend DU. I learned that friends don't always provide the support you need, that your mom and dad will be the ones there whenever you need them. As I continue to pursue my education I have learned that by attending DU I create a stronger family bond and learn to trust in my parents judgement of whats the best for me.

My college experience has had its up & downs but it helped me learn a lot and that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it. When I first started college, I really wasn?t sure what I wanted to do with my life. So I just started taking the basic classes to get me started. Some classes I struggled and others I excelled in. When I realized the career path I was going in wasn?t where I wanted to go I decided to change my major. I enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at my college. It was the longest and hardest 10 months of my life and I couldn?t wait for it to be over. Now that I finally graduated, all that hard work has paid off. That program disciplined me and made me a better student as well as a better person. It was valuable because I made new friends that I will cherish for the rest of my life. They became like family to me. The program was so rewarding and in the end made me a happier person because I felt like I accomplished so much.

Hello, when I graduated from high school I really had no idea what I was going to do with my life., I had no money and no will power to do anything about it. I started attending Tallahassee community college just to make my parents happy, and ended up getting hooked. I fell in love with social science and the legal profession. What I have gotten out of college has been a new direction in life. Before school I wanted to play video games for a living, now i have realized i want to graduate and go to law school and even minor in history. I now am applying for Florida state university and I work full time at a law firm all because school has mad me realize only the active succeed.

Piniel

The one thing that I have learned from my college experiance is that I have to depend on myself to get work done. Often times I have had to do more research than neccessary to figure out things like finanical aid and my major/minor because the people who should have been available to help me gave me the run-around. I have also learned that I have to push myself and motivate myself and that I have to force myself out of my comfort zone if I want to suceed in life.

Collie

My college experience has been a valued time in my life, opening doors to different relationships and an expanded ethic in working towards a goal. During high school, I attended a small school with a class no larger than seventy students. Since childhood, our relationships set in and maintained, for the most part, unchanged. While attending a community college for two years, I found similarties in peers I never imagined existed while in high school. My social group grew to involve older students, friends of different races, and backgrounds of all sorts. Amongst them, I found that I came to college with a very limited opinion of humanity.

Nichole

I have learned a great deal from my college experiences. I have learned to interact with different cultures and people from around the US. I have learned discipline in taken online courses and striving to always do my best. I have attained several skills regarding my area of study, Leadership and Organizational Studies. I have learned that just because you didn't attend college as soon as you graduated high school does not mean that you are exempt from earning a higher education.

Kelsey

From my first year of college I have learned how to live and get along with other people. Coming 2,000 miles away from home to go to school, I had to learn how to get along with many different kinds of people. For example, my roommate and I had a few major disagreements throughout the year about miscommunication. In the end, it boiled down to learning how to easily communicate with one another. I am proud to say that we ended the year on good terms and will be good friends. However, anybody else could have had this same experience. Attending the University of Denver has been valuable for me because of the very diverse people I met and the many lifestyles I learned about. My roommate, for example, was Honduran, my resident advisor was Indian, and one of my close friends was from France. This to me is a very valuable part of my college experience, teaching me about other cultures and allowing me to take a step out of my comfort zone and learn how to live with people much different than myself. To me, diversity is one of the most crucial parts of the college experience.

Craig

Prior to attending college, I was always the student who worked the hardest and always knew what my goal was. However, my goals were often short term and usually related to the current project that I was working on. However, my college experience has changed this. Since beginning my college career, I have gained a sense of purpose and I now have something that I am passionate about promoting: diversity and Inclusive Excellence. One of the groups I have been involved with is the Asian Student Alliance (ASA), which is a part of the larger "One Community": an alliance of several student groups who advocate for Inclusive Excellence: My involvement with the One Community has instilled in me a passion for creating inclusive environments where all students, regardless of their multiple identities, can feel welcomed. This passion of promoting Inclusive Excellence, and my goals associated with it, have given me my first real passion. My experience with the One Community and promoting Inclusive Excellence has been valuable to me because it has given me a clearer vision of which direction I want my life to head towards. Now, I am able to make more long term goals to acheive.

I couldn't even begin to describe what attending college for my Associate's in Nursing has done for me. But to at least try-it's made me grow, in ways I would not have thought possible. Even as I learn invasive techniques like IV therapy, I learn more compassion, and it's applied in every part of my life. My class is a tight-knit family-we want to help each other become amazing nurses, and we are such a diverse group. Surgery nurses, neonatal nurses, trauma nurses, and far more. I've learned more in the last year in nursing school than I did in three years at a traditional university. It has changed me in ways I haven't even determined yet. Although getting through the next year will be very difficult due to money constraints, I'm prepared to give it my all.

Be the volunteer for programs, but one of the programs named Project Homeless Connect is my favourite. I served for those homeless people and helped them to solve problems like shelter, insurance, ID, etc. These experiences make me get better know different classes in the society.

Caitlin

My first year in college has been a whirlwind of changes. Beyond the freedom and independence, I have grown in so many ways that I never imagined or prepared myself for. I am growing as a student, questioning things I have never thought about and studying in areas I have never been exposed to. But more than anything, I am growing as an adult and a woman. Beyond the classroom, I have learned so much about myself and what it means to be a college student. Outside of the classroom, my values were tested from the very beginning; this new environment questioned the principles I had always lived by. I immediately had to reaffirm my beliefs, the values of my family and of my individuality. I was raised with the standard of hard work and accountability, and internalized this as I made my way through high school, but once I reached college and I was exposed to another way of life for the first time I couldn?t simply profess it. I realized that to make the most out of this experience, I would have to remain devoted to the diligence and conscientiousness that had helped get me this far.

Brendan

The most valuable thing that I have gotten out of my college experience is the ability to breathe. Before, I was sort of known among my friends as "the spazz" because when the going got tough, I would freak out! I had, on several occasions, stressed myself to the point of illness. Aside from being dangerously unhealthy, it was seriously not fun! Going to college changed that for me. In college, I was surrounded by individuals, like myself, who were very focused on their academic success, but managed to do so without stressing themselves sick. Gaining the friends that I have now, and the clich? 20/20 vision of hindsight has taught me the invaluable lesson of just taking a moment to think. That one simple moment where you let all of the pieces come together in your mind. That simple moment where you just take the time to breathe.

Josue

I vaule that I have been able to develop my skills and transform myself into a leader on campus and within the community. I have been able to put my self in environments that have challenged my traditional ways of thinking and I have been able to evolve and become more well rounded in terms of realting to others and understanding their perspectives. I am grateful for the opportunity that I have been given by receiving an education from this University and am positive that it has opened many doors for me that I will be able to take advantage of upon graduation. I know that I will be better off in the future for having made the decision to attend college, and that is where additional value will be seen.

As a transfer student, The University of Denver has given me a completely new college experience. After my first year in college, I realized that there were many things that I wanted to change and add to my college career. The University of Denver (DU) has fufilled everything I seek from college. The campus of DU emits an infectious energy that you cannot find elsewhere. Everyone there is motivated, enthusiastic, and friendly. I imediately felt at home when I arrived there. Also DU values close attention to students and teachers learning together. In pursuit of a degree in Biological Science, I am able to research alongside my professors, and learn skills I will need in my later on career. DU encourages its students to be involved in the local and global community. It has offered me the chance for internships in the city of Denver, and study abroad programs in countless countries. Most importnatly, DU is my home away from home. I know when I walk onto campus, that I belong there. There is a place for everyone, and anyone at DU.

Kyle

What I have gotten out of my college experence. I have gained new friends and have experienced a new life style. I have met many people from different cultures and gained new freindships. I have gained more knoledge that will help me out in my future career path. It has been valuable to me, in preparing me for furthering my education. What I have gained from my college experience to date has only gotten me so far, but futhering my education will get me even further in life. What I have gained from my experiences will be with me for life and look forward to making more and better memories.

My college experience has allowed me to prepare to provide for my family. My husband was currently laid off by the state just after we sold our house relocated for the new job. It really shocked our sytems and left me feeling incredibly helpless. We Have three young boys who are just the best things we could of ever had, I needed to educate myself to be employable and never have this helpless feeling again. I chose to enter the nursing field. I have had great interest in nursing but always thought I would enter school after my boys were all in Elementary school. I am a former EMT and Volunteer firefighter of four years. I know I will really enjoy a career in Nursing and will be able to support my family if my husband should ever be laid off again. So far I have completed the first year of the AS Nursing program at UAA. I have thouroughly enjoyed my schooling and am learning to juggle my families schedule with mine. We had to take out a school loan to pay for daycare and after school care that has really mounted up. It will all pay off.

This is my first year in college, and already I have learned how to be more responsible and still have fun. I currently live with my parents and use my mother's vehicle for transportation with the responsibilities of getting her to work and still make sure I get to school on time. In high school , teacher's are always trying to make sure that student's are in class and constantly giving the reminder to get homework done, but in college there is no one except me as a reminder. If I need help, it is my responsibility to get the help that I need. I also learned how to turn majority of my work in early, rather than the day of. When it comes to having fun, I still go to parties and hang with friends, but I make sure to make sure my school work is where it needs to be. With all the responsibilty, I find myself loving college. The experience allows me to make my own decisions in and out of school.

Becky

I have learned that it is important to always do your best and to be as involved as possible. It also because quite obvious that you needed to learn how to manage your time. I have had a lot of room to grow as a student here at the University of Denver. If there was ever something that I wanted to be a part of on campus, but it didn't exist, there was plenty of room and support to create the outlet I was seeking.

Brian

I have gained knowledge that will assist me in bettering my life.

Jillian

My college experience has been nothing like I ever thought it would be. It has been scarier, harder, more fun and entertaining and gets better with each passing year. The invaluable knowledge, life skills and people skills I have a accquired will help me immensely with my art history and Italian degrees. Also haing my schools prestigious name linked with mine will give the opputrunity to go far with my career. DU has been an excellent place to grow an dlearn, and I am thrilled to see what the future has in store for me!!!
