What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Shawn

Greek life is a predominant group on campus. Student Government is actively apart of campus as well. There are tons of groups to become involved in, breaking up the mass of campus into smaller, more close knit communities. Even dorms are places of bonding. Athletic events are a HUGE part of campus life. Football season is magical and basketball season is just as crazy. UF students LOVE LOVE LOVE the gators. I've been to everything from rugby games, to lacrosse, to gymnastics, to football, to cheerleading. Each attracts a different fan, but each is entertaining. The ACCENT program brings many well-know, respected, and/or controversal speakers to UF. This year alone, we've heard from John Kerry, Bill Bye, and Jack Kevorkian, just to name a few.

Angie

The most popular organization is SAA, and the most popular teams are the athletic teams, like basketball and football. I'm involved with Ocean Aware, and it's fairly new, but its main goal is to tell other people about ocean awareness and raise money for ocean awareness. Some students in the dorms leave their dorms open. Athletic events are very popular. Guest speakers are very popular as well. I wouldn't say there is much of a dating scene. Most people meet at parties and many don't want a serious relationship because it's their first year of college. I met my closest friends during Summer B session. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I'm probably at a fraternity. Homecoming happens each year, and I'm sure there are many other things that I'm oblivious to. People party very often. I decided not to rush this past fall, which I feel was a mistake, so I've decided to rush for sure this fall, and many of my friends are in fraternities and sororities so I would say it will be important. I want to a fraternity last weekend. You can go to a movie or out to eat, but you can still go to a party without drinking. When I'm off campus I go shopping, out to eat, the grocery store or go to Jacksonville for the weekend.

Sporting events, especially football games are huge! I met my closest friends through my sorority, and sororities & fraternities are huge & very important!

Nikki

The most popular groups are fraternities or sororities, gator party, campus crusades, football team, basketball team, cicerones. No people do not leave their doors open. Althletic events, guest speakers and theater are very popular. My closest friends came from my sorority. If I'm awake at 2 am I will be a party or studying. Traditions on our campus would be football game days. People are partying everynight except sunday. Fraternities and sororities dominate and help our campus very much so. Last weekend I studied for all of the tests I had this week and went to one party. Saturday night you can go to the movies, bowling, hang out with friends, or study. I grocery shop off campus or shop.

Sinead

Greek life, intramurals and fun clubs. I am in a sorority and I love it! Yes some students leave their doors open. Athletic events are EXTREMELY popular, go gators! Probably hanging out with friends in a dorm. Gator Growl, football games, homecoming week, etc. People party very often. Pretty important. I did a service project and my best friend was visiting from home so we went out. You can go anywhere and not drink! I shop, eat, play off campus.

Jamie

fucken awesome

Lindsey

People will party as often as they wish. Life is not revolved around drinking, you can go to the movies, eat out, go to sporting events, etc! If I am awake on Tuesday at 2am...I am either visiting a friends dorm, at the sorority house, or just coming out of Midtown's hopping clubs! Off campus I love to go shopping and hang out with friends.

michelle

the most popular groups on campus are sorority and fraternity life. i am involved with the inter-residence association, and it is a very residence hall oriented organization focusing on student life on campus. students in most dorms leave their doors open, but not in my dorm. athletic events and guest speakers are very popular, and theater events are moderately popular. the dating scene is very open and active. i met my closest friends through my roommates and networking at parties. people party mostly every week, atleast once. frats and sororities are very important to people who are in them, but not as important to those who arent unless you live with someone who is greek. last weekend, i went to parties at night and studied during the day. on a saturday night you could go to a club, catch a movie, or go out to dinner with friends. off campus, you could go tubing down a spring/river, go skydiving, take a trip to the beach or to disney/orlando.

Niki

Greek Life and Student GOvernment, SGP, yes, very, very, mild, lots of hooking up, broward, facebooking or drunk dialing, gator growl, everynight, very, went out with my friends, movies bowling games lots of things do not need drinking, live life outside of school

Megan

I think the Greek community is a popular one. It is a way for students to come together and make friends with other students with similar interests. I never lived in the dorm. Football and basketball games are very popular, as well as different speakers and shows on campus. I met my closest friends through my sorority. On Tuesday at 2 am, I am probably studying; I have early class on Wednesdays. Certain traditions with football season occur every year: Homecoming (Gator Growl) and, in the Greek community, Dance Marathon. Some people party a lot, while others don't. It just depends on the kind of person you are. My sorority is important to me, and I think sororities and fraternities do a lot on campus. Last weekend I went to a fraternity's Woodser. On a Saturday night, you can go to the movies, hang out with friends, go to clubs, just about anything; no one is forcing anybody to drink.

Becca

Athletic events, especially football and basketball, are very popular but often hard to get tickets to. There are so really cool preformaces and even big name artists, like Elton John and Dave Matthews Band, that come here. Greek life is a big part of campus, you can't walk around without seeing Greek letters. The University offers a lot of on-campus activities both during the week and on the weekends that don't involve drinking. Try to live in a dorm with a communal bathroom, you meet more people.

Nicole

I don't think any student would feel out of place at UF. There is seriously a group for everyone. I took my freshman year to really look at the campus and figre ut where i fit in. I joined a variety of clubs but it wasn't until I joined a sorority the fall of my sophomore year that i felt like i really git in. I am in a house with girls with similar interests and i am inspired everyday to better myself through academics, campus involvement, and service. I think GreekLife is really big on campus. After seeing how involved greek organizations were on campus i really wanted to join. I would see girls with their letters together and it looked like such a great support system. College life can get hard sometimes and its great to have sisters to lean on. I am really happy i decided to go greek. Greek Life isn't for everyone though and there are plenty of people that decide not to join. I live in an off campus apartment and both of my roommates are not greek. They are both busy doing their own thing though and are very happy. One of them has a job at an after school day care and the other volunteers for Rock104.3 There is really something for everyone at UF. No matter what your interest. You can find a group for just about anything on the reitz union website. I have enjoyed two leisure classes so far. They are an AWESOME opportunity to learn a new skill and meet some new people. I took pottery wheel and beginning guitar. It doesn't take up too much time or money, and it feels great at the end to see you have learned something new! You aren't graded or anything so it is really a nice break from regular classes. My freshman year i was in Springs Complex which was mostly athletes. I am not an athlete but it was cool getting to meet the girls on the swim team and see popular foot ball players. The dorm was not as social as some of my other friends dorms. In broward when they get home after going out they'll usually go down to the common room and order pizza.

Chris

organizations - cicerones is one of the most sought after groups to be in. The ambassadors for florida who are known to be the most friendly people you will ever meet and they are soooo easy to talk to. They are every future leaders examples. Most of the time the cicerones are the people who if you've only talked to them once, you feel like they are your best friend. Most people want to be in this organization because the people they look up to the most are dedicated members. Athletic events - "The Swamp" on gamedays is probably going to be declared the 8th wonder of the world. I live about 5 miles away from campus and it would be easier for me to walk from my apartment to the stadium then to try and find somewhere to park at the school. People start off the day around 7am with "kegs and eggs" tailgating. Every square foot of the school is covered with gator fans. With a title and Tebow, what would you expect?

Emily

Greek organizations are definitely the most popular on campus. Football games are the most popular events by far. The dating scene at UF seems non-existent. Everyone hooks up or already has a significant other. If I am awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, I'm either watching tv, talking to my boyfriend on the phone, playing on facebook, or doing homework. People party a lot! I think sororities and fraternities are good organizations as long as you don't get too caught up in all the bullshit/if you can handle all the bull shit. I can go to a play, go out to dinner with friends, watch a movie on a Saturday night without drinking.

Jackie

RUB and ACCENT are very popular on campus. I am involved with the photography club, Exposure, and relatively new so I noticed the group has not gained much "exposure" yet. UF has guest speakers often. Dr. Kevorkian came in January and John Kerry came in the Fall. I go to the theatre often, we have a few of them. I met my closest friends in class, but dating wise I meet people by going downtown to the clubs. I live off campus and have a car so I can do a lot on the weekends. Go to a friend's house, see a movie, eat out with someone and every year there are things like art festivals and medieval fair and even downtown I have fun though I do not drink.

Angela

sororities and fraternities, bball, football - sorority - no - very popular - it's hard to date here - some online, some in greek life, some through other friends - talking online or drinking - homecoming - all the time - important - drank too much - see movies, hang with friends, go bowling - i live off campus, so almost everything

ali

Most groups are very popular.

Caitlen

Students at the University seem to be a little seperated in terms of Greek and nongreek. It is ok for the most part and being Greek I absolutly love my soriority. I believe it is something worth experiencing but I know it isn't for everyone. People just need to keep in mind that is doesn't make you better or worst than the next person. The problem I encounter the most is that people who are non-Greek believe people who are party all the time. I dont like to party until wee hours of the morning and I like to have fun but I don't drink. My favorite activites are off-roading and going to the movies. Just remeber to always keep an open mind and dont lump people together into one group.

Monica

Athletic event are the most popular things on campus. The energy just completly changes when its a game day. SO MUCH FUN! I'm in an area government for my dorm and i hate it. They take the most random ridiculous things so seriously and it's not worth the time. If your into politics, join student government. If you were in student government in high school and are looking for something similar to do in college but didn't relly take HS too seriously, DO NOT DO AN AREA GOVERNMENT! It's crap. i met my closest friends in my dorm. I think all first year students shoul live in the dorm. There is nothing like dorm life. It's awesome!!!! That is for sure worth it.Greek life is pretty important. Better are your chances to stay involve and get more positions on campus if you are greek. You can def. live without it if it's not your thing but if you want to do it, do it. If your unsure it's also worth it to get a feel of college life without that added strees/excitement too see if you really want to do it. Not something to jump into if your unsure.

Mary

Greek life is definitely most popular. I'm involved in the Springs Area government. We host events for the residents and try to get them to know one another. Students in my dorm left their doors open. Athletic events are VERy popular, as well as guest speakers. I dont think theater is AS popular. I met my closest friends on my floor in my dorm last year. If im awake at 2am on a tues, im doing homework. (or procrastinating)One downside of Uf is how prevalent greek life is. Sometimes i feel like since I'm not in a sorority im missing out. But i know its not for me, and i still feel pressured to be in one. That kind of bothers me, cause they are everywhere. For a saturday night with no drinking, you can go out to dinner, go to the movies, local bands play downtown, sometimes there are plays, camping, lots of things!

Andy

The most popular organizations are campus are Greek. Doors in dorms lock automatically and require a identification key card to get in the building. Homecoming and Gator Growl are big traditions. Sports are a huge deal here, with all basketball and football games being sold out. On Tuesday at 2 am, I would probably be studying, but that is not th norm. I would say partying would be the number 1 answer. In my apartment complex, people literally party from Tuesday night to Sunday night like clockwork.

Andy

I think like in most colleges the most popular organizations are the fraternities and sororities. I'm not part of any fraternities but I'm involved with Newsies and CARES. Newsies publishes articles about on-campus events and things students are interested in. CARES is a group that fund raises for cancer research. Currently, we are busy in setting our 2nd annual 5k run in April. I'm awake at 2 a.m. most nights either hanging out with my roomates, playing ps3, or strumming my guitar. Every year UF holds Gator Growl, the largest student run pep rally in the world. Last year we had Frank Caliendo and Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is held homecoming weekend on Oct. every year.

Reese

Sororities and Fraternaties are extremely popular on campus for more reasons then for social lives. Going greek helps network for joining other student organizations, senate, and for a job. I am involved in ACCENT (which is a division of student government that brings controversial speakers to campus) through a sorority sister. Dorm life depends on the dorm that you live in. Freshman dorms such as broward and jennings, are very social. The doors aren't usually left open, but are always unlocked. The lobby areas after a night of going out are a post party! Everyone gathers and orders pizza. Although these dorms are social they aren't the nicest. Springs and Beaty (which are suite style) are the nicest but also only allow you to get to know 3 other people vs a whole floor. Athletic events RUN this school. If you aren't into gator football, I dare say that might be a problem. Guest speakers often come, and cater to everyones different interests. Theater isn't very big here, I've been to a couple plays, and to be honest they were really boring and the theater department isn't very good here. Ever year there is Gator Growl (which is advertised to be the biggest college pep rally) in all reality its really pointless to go. The entertainment is mediocre, and the only cool part is the performance at the end, so you can go an hour late. You can party here in Gainesville, probably every day of the week if you wanted to. Monday- Is Swamp night, Tuesday- The Grog, Wednesday- Gator City/XS, Thursdays- Anywhere downtown really, same for friday and Sat. Fake Id's work well downtown, and midtown don't even try, except for the bar Balls, which will take any id that remotely looks like you. Pregaming at a Fraternity for girls (or being in one for guys) has its advantages. Everyone loves pledge season, also known as personal chauffers.
