What is your overall opinion of this school?

Carson

I think that this is large campus, but it really has a college feel. When you watch television shows and they portray the typical college, that's this! But, it's a good thing.

Sara

The best thing about UGA is Athens itself. It truly is the best college town in the country. The eceltic mix of studnets, townies and regular residence make Athens a great place to go to school. The Downtown area id full of shops and bars as well as great places to catch up-and-coming bands and old favorites. As far as UGA goes, it is a large school, but you can make it smaller by becoming active in a greek organization or by joining on of the many clubs. UGA pride s huge! We bleed red and black, which is all the more evident during football season. In the fall, Athens swells in size as people from across rhe South shuffle into Sanford stadium-I get goose bumps just thinking about it!

Cat

UGA is amazing. It has basically anything a college student could want/desire. If you want sports, we have them all. If you want a strong academic program, we have that. If you want a college town, Athens is one of the best. If you want to have a great job when you leave here, UGA makes it easy with its helpful career center. Want to party, it is easy here. Want to study all night long, go to the SLC, it is open 24 hours a day. Want great culture, there is always a play to see, art to look at or music to experience. Want more, well Atlanta, Georgia's capital, is only a short drive away. UGA has it all!

Karen

UGA can be very overwhelming when you first arrive. My high school had less than 200 graduates and my first class at UGA was at least that size. I went from classes with 8 students to large lecture classes. While I felt out of place a bit, I never felt like it was too much. I'm part of a residential college, which has made UGA feel like a smaller school. Reactions vary widely when I tell people I go to UGA. Some automatically assume that I must drink all of the time and they don't believe me when I say I don't drink. Others comment on how proud my parents must be or ask me about someone they know at UGA thinking we might know each other. For those who think in terms of football, they either question why I'd go to UGA (because they feel their school is superior, although it is rarely the school they actually attend) or they think I know all about the football team.

Addi

I think UGA is the perfect size. I always run into people I know, and often have familiar faces in every class. However, because of the large size, I am always meeting new people. When I tell people I go to UGA, people are generally impressed and have some story about the weekend they spent in Athens. Athens is a great college town. The downtown area has a lot to offer for such a small town. There are also opportunities for students to become involved with the community through service and fun events. As for the administration, I think they have done a good job of increasing the academics at the school and planning the future of the school. There us a lot of school pride.

Bernie

Most frequent students complaints are about the difficulty of getting classes in high demand majors. For example, many students in SPIA take 5 years to graduate bc of the difficulty of getting classes. The other biggest complain is on campus parking -it stinks!

Meggan

UGA is THE college town--so much so that it's a little weird how rare permanence is here. There seems to be a social group for everybody: greek life, gamers, art kids, partiers, normal people...but it's hard to establish yourself here, so doing social things outside of class is important in making friends--especially if you don't do greek life. The north campus is beautiful. Our teachers are probably no better or worse than any others. I'll always remember Halloween in Athens. It is the craziest event ever. Tailgating is pretty interesting too. The food here is AWESOME--dining halls too! Oh, and you can't fail with the music scene. You just can't.

Melanie

The best thing about UGA is being in Athens and being around so many other people who love UGA too. I think the school is a great size. I love walking to my classes and seeing thousands of people in my same shoes. I am in the honors program, which is one of my favorite things, because I really do get the great small, discussion based classes, as well as being at the huge school. There are so many different kinds of people, and you can always find someone who will go out with you, or go to a meeting for an activist group, or go to a sporting event. Athens is the best college town, I know so many people who go to other schools who are jealous of Athens, and they should be, its so fun. Plus, I love being at a school where everyone is proud to be a dawg. The sports here are amazing, which makes school pride incredible.

Sheryl

It is a great college-town. I think the campus is a great size. People are normally impressed that I go to UGA, since it is getting harder to get into. I spend most of my time on North Campus, where my classes are, plus it is pretty! I do not have a strong opinion on the administration, I think they are working hard but sometimes worry when students are not always made aware of important things promptly, such as an attack I heard about a few weeks ago that was never announced via e-mail. I think a big "controversy" has been the dealing with sexual harrassment on campus. School pride is pretty great, but I think a lot of that depends on how are teams are doing. I think UGA is unusual because it is a strong academic school, and is in a fun enviroment. I will always remember my experiences as a member of the Greek community and hosting and attending fun events that benefit wonderful charities.

Davis

beth thing is uga has so many majors i would change no class on good friday school size is just right people wonder how i got to uga from nc and why i didnt go to unc i spend all my time on campus in caldwell hall doin my landscape architecture projects its a college town in the poorest county in GA. has a 28{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} poverty rate, but thats cause uga students arent actual clarke county residents uga admin are the dumbest people alive and you can never talk to someone of authority recent controversy is teacher sexually harrasing students SO MUCH SCHOOL PRIDE i will always remember fist semester freshman year pledging complaints are about everything, its hard to please 32000+ students

Robin

I love the culture of Athens and UGA. As an alum, I will always have a special place in my heart for Athens. I met some of my lifetime best friends at UGA and no matter where I am I will be a bulldog til I die. My ultimate favorite thing about UGA is football season, it is my favorite time of the year. I really enjoyed going to a southern, bigger state school and getting to enjoy every aspect that comes along with that.I spent most of my time on north campus. It is such a pretty part of campus and all my classes were on north campus.

Maggie

Best thing about UGA? The challenging and enriching curriculum. The beautiful campus. The friendly people. The near proximity to the mountains. there are so many things. It's a big campus but I wouldn't change it. I think a big campus gives a student a lot more to choose from in involvement to professors. and it's exciting!

Tori

The first thing I remember thinking about UGA is "WOW, this place is huge!". Now though, it feels so small. People are so friendly and North campus is beautiful. Go spend some time laying around or playing frisbee and you will fall in love. Athens also has one of the top college towns in the country ( as rated by the Rolling Stones Magazine every year!). The music scene is incredible and there is always something going on from fairs to bicycle races and shows. One things def not lacking on campus is school pride...AKA Georgia football. You cannot attend UGA without becoming a follower of the religion known as the Georgia Bulldogs.

Wendy

The best thing about UGA is the college town feel. It's an amazing town where the locals are so welcoming to the students (usually), and it's no surprise a lot of people never WANT to leave. I think it's weird when people NEVER leave though. I love the fact that I meet new people every day, but there is never a single day I don't know anybody. So I'd say the school size is just right. People are usually impressed I go to UGA, or they're not a fan because they go to or went to some other SEC school. I love spending time in the SLC or at the Tate Center because those two buildings are just so social. UGA administration is pretty helpful most of the time; they're just slow with telling us information quickly. Everybody here BLEEDS red & black, and it is absolutely fantastic. UGA has a gorgeous north campus with old buildings and fountains. I'll always remember learning how to bark for the first football game. GO DAWGS!

Carmen

I love UGA. It's like a big family, and I get a bit nostalgic when I think that we are all the bulldawg nation. It's amazing!

Hunter

The best thing about UGA is downtown- bar hopping! I would change the academics, they are mediocre at best. My school is perfect in size, it's large, but you just have to find your niche. Because I am from an affluent area in NJ, most people go to prestigious schools and look down upon UGA. Little do they know that I receive in-state tuition, by establishing residency with a relative. I spend most of my time in the dining hall, the SLC, downtown, outside. The best college town- Athens. UGA's administration is lacking, they do not care about the students nor are student their main priority- that would be MAKING MONEY and CODDLING EVERYONE IN THE GREEK SYSTEM. The biggest controversies in our school were the sexual harassment scandals with several male teachers. There is lots of school pride (How 'Bout Them Dawgs!). There is not really anything unusual about Georgia.. it's your typical state school that attracts a myriad of people. One experience I will never forget is Dance Marathon- absolutely the most fun philanthropy on campus, and something that everyone should do! You dance for 24 hours, a culmination of a year long event that raises money for Children's Miracle Network!

Jonathan

The best thing about UGA is its variety of people...there are people from all walks of life around the campus, and it's interesting to get to know them all. I think that all of the drinking regulations around campus and the presence of what seems like a veritable army of UGA Police driving unnecessarily large vehicles are counter-productive and produce an unease and distrust between the students and the police that are there to protect them. A third of the UGA Police could be let go, and their salaries and gas money could pay for more pedestrian-friendly crosswalks and intersections (I know about 5 people who have gotten heavily fined for jaywalking, which i think is absolutely ridiculous). I like the size of the school because I like to constantly meet new and interesting people. People don't know exactly how to react when I tell them about UGA because my experience here has been different from the average student. I started on the Myers Quad and I have hung out with mostly international and honors students. People are surprised to hear about that side of the University.

Kate

The best thing about UGA for me is all the new people I have met since coming here. Also, it is nice to be close to home but not too close. UGA is a large school and sometimes I get overwhelmed by its size especially at first but I think once you find your niche it gets smaller. People are impressed when I tell them I go to UGA especially if they are from Atlanta because the there is a huge amount of competition to get into UGA and therefore makes acceptance more difficult to achieve. Athens is definitely a college town because the university is so large. I have had some good teachers and I have had some not so good teachers but I think that you find that at every school. UGA provides background info on most of the teachers like what the class average of their class' in the past are etc. and this helps with choosing the teachers that are right for me. There is a HUGE amount of school pride and I love it! It really gets me excited about being here and proud. The most complaints probably have to do with the harsh penalties given when a student is caught drinking underage and also the amount of police in athens. It is like the police are just out to get the students in trouble. It seems like they focus only on arresting the students downtown and not with the serious crimes that have been reported so far this year. One thing about UGA that makes me a little uncomfortable is the government welfare housing that is located right next to campus and the freshman dorms.

Erin

UGA is a huge school with a small campus feel to it. While there are endless possibilities to meet new people, just walking around campus you begin to notice that you know more people at UGA than you might have realized. It's pretty easy to run into someone you know, yet if you don't want to see those people, they can easily be avoided on the huge campus. If I had to change anything, I would make more buses available on campus. When you wait at a bus stop with time to spare, and you're still late for your class because the buses are running late, that is a major problem. SGA is currently working on improving the bus system. Being from Atlanta, a lot of people are not surprised that I go to UGA. There is a huge percentage of students from the Metro Atlanta area. Most of my time is spent on South Campus, the science major's home. North Campus is arts & social sciences. Athens is absolutely a college town. I would venture a guess that the population of Athens-Clarke county is about 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} UGA students, or at least it feels that way. UGA's administration could stand for some improvement but they do have their strengths. The biggest recent controvery would have to be the sexual harassment issue that has been all over the Red & Black, UGA's newspaper. It's a big deal to hear that a professor who has been here for 20 years is being charged with sexual harassment of students, including girls he was an academic advisor to. In terms of school pride, it's not called the BULLDAWG NATION for nothing. I will never forget the 2007 football game against Auburn, The Blackout, that was by far the best football game I've ever been to.

Candler

Greastest college and college town ever. UGA football is something no other school can come close to touching.

Mary

The best thing is downtown. The administration sucks.

Elizabeth

The best thing about UGA is the city, the football, and the campus! In my opinion, the school is the perfect size, but I was looking for a large school. There are over 30,000 students that attend UGA. The one thing I would change is the minority population - there are not a lot of minority students attending the school and I think that keeps students from inter-mingling with students are different from themselves. I would also change homecoming - it's really not that big of a deal at UGA. When I tell people that I go to UGA, their responses differ depending on where I am. Within Georgia, UGA has a great reputation. In recent years, the requirements for acceptance have drastically risen - many alumni agree they would never have gotten in if they were students now. With the HOPE scholarship for in-state students, Georgia has kept some of the best and brightest in the state and UGA is their best option. Elsewhere in the South, UGA has a great reputation - often for its football. Elsewhere in the U.S., the university doesn't have much of a name for itself, but I think that is going to change with the entrance requirements increasing and the fact that we were the only public institution to have two Rhodes scholars this year. I spend most of my time on the central and north part of campus. This area has the Student Learning Center (a new building with study rooms, classrooms, a coffee shop, and computer labs). Next door is the Tate Student Center where a lot of organizations' activities take place as well as the campus movie theater. Tate 2 is currently under construction and the students can't WAIT to see the completed project. In addition, the center of campus has the football stadium. North campus is the most beautiful part of campus and houses the law school, main library, business school, and numerous other colleges. Definitely college town! There are over 30,000 students in Athens attending UGA. In addition, we have the greatest college music scene in the country!! UGA's administration works hard and does great things for UGA, but they have an air of superiority and do not seem to have casual relationships with students. They really should come down off of their pedestal and mingle with the students. In addition, the Student Government Association doesn't accomplish much, so students often feel entirely separated from the campus administration. The biggest controversy on campus is currently a list of sexual harassment charges against a professor in one of the colleges. In addition, the basketball team has had three or four players dismissed from the team leading to the review of the men's coach. Also, a year or two ago, a freshman died in a dorm from alcohol and cocaine; this led to strict changes in residence hall rules as well as the idea of probation after each alcohol offense and expulsion after the second. There is so much campus pride it's ridiculous. It is most often shown through our football team, but you will always see students in UGA gear, they all have UGA stickers on their cars, some have state UGA license plates, and they all hate schools that wear orange :) The most unusual thing about UGA is the music scene - there are so many great bands to have come out of Athens and that tradition continues today. Whether it's Tasty World, The Georgia Theater, or 40 Watt - a student can always find a group to go listen to! The one experience I will always remember was my senior year trip to St. Simons, GA with some friends for a 5-day vacation over Fall Break. Our fall break coincides with the Georgia vs. Florida football game in Jacksonville and there is a huge beach party and student population that is in St. Simons. Then, everyone takes buses or drives to Jacksonville for the game on Saturday. It's just one big party for the week - AND we won this year!! Go Dawgs!!
