University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Ian

Since the school is so large there is anenormous variety of people here. People from around the wrold attend the school and all manner of relidious and political groups exist. It is interesting, and stimulating, but also rather overwhelming sometimes.

Phaelon

In classes my classmates are helpful, but for the most part I have lectures so the students don't interact much. In discussions students create relationships that help us get through the class. Alot of times though these relationships tend to develop at the end of the semester. The classmates that I have friendships with outside of class are smart, encouraging, and driven students. Very helpful and nice whenever I need them.

Phillip

I'm in a unique situation. My first two years of school were completed at the College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, then I transferred to the University of Illinois for my third year, however, I registered for they architecture study aboard program in France. Technically I haven't had any classes at U of I. So, I'm still in the process of getting to know my classmates. Judging from my first semster with them I would say that they have a variety of personalities. Having a smaller group of people makes it easier to establish closer relationships.

Laurie

Classmates are intelligent, hard-working, and diverse.

Rebecca

My classmates are enthusiastic, open-minded, intelligent, friendly, creative, and amazing people that are going to do great things with their lives.

Stephanie

Very kind and helpful

Kelsey

Everyone is so friendly and welcoming to all groups and races here at the University.

Amanda

I think every student can find a place here because there are so many people to choose from to make friends with as long as a student makes an effort to get involved.

Jessica

A lot of students at Illinois are from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. This is a neat characteristic because the friends we make here come from places not to far from our own home so the friendships can continue when not at school. I would say that students on campus are mostly from the left, or at least that's what it seems like.

Taylor

The University of Illinois is diverse. There are hundreds of groups and clubs and committees on campus that cater to and celebrate every kind of student at the U of I. Groups range from the Illini Chinese Christian Fellowship to the Lebanese Cultural Club to Ladies Loving Ladies. There is a group that everyone fits into, and helps students find fellow peers to talk about issues that are concerning them, or to just have a good time. Honestly, No one could step onto this campus and feel unwelcome or out of place, there truly is something for everybody. What I find most heartwarming about my campus is that, despite our differences, everyone accepts each other. We all live, and share our campus together and I feel that we all have a mutual respect for one another.

Andy

We have a wide range of social groups on campus. All are very welcoming but there have been instances where I have felt like certain groups were forcing their views on me. It was extremely uncomfortable. Other than that, most students are very nice and easy to talk to. It makes me feel very welcome here. The funny think about Illinois is that all freshman are so excited about getting away from home and going away to college but once you get here you realize that most of the students are from Chicago and the suburbs just like you. So it's kind of anti-climactic. That shouldn't discourage students though, I have met many students from outside of the country as well. It seems like many of the students' mentality is to be active and participate in some on campus activity. As you walk down the quad it's really easy to notice how many different types of mindsets there are just by reading the sidewalk.

Viren

Jeff

Illinois is a very diverse school. There's ever type of person from race, gender, and age. I think this is very important because that's what the real world is like and it's preparing you to communicate with many different types of people. The other great thing about Illinois' student body is their school spirit when it comes to sporting events. I played volleyball and I've never seen a crowd like Illinois produces at home games!

Morgan

Most students wear sweats and lounge clothes to class. I do not get dressed up for class, there is no reason to. Most Illinois students are from the Chicagoland area. Obviously, because Illinois is the best school in the nation, and Chicago is the greatest city - it goes hand in hand! Different types of students interact all the time. I have met so many diverse people at this university, and I love it!

matt

as a student, you are as open to participate in anything as you want to be. in general, most of the people who do participate in more extracurricular activities are in the easier majors, las college for example. i never experienced a time when i felt like i or anyone else was not welcome in the university. everybody finds their place, whether it be a fraternity or chorus or acting troupe.

Isabel

I kind of explained this in the stereotype section

Chris

Our school is somewhat segregated. Especially in the dorms.

Zach

Illinois is a religiously and politically aware campus. Many groups and organizations strive to involve students in related initiatives. There are a giant range of political opinions. At Hendrick House, everyone basically knows everyone else, so there is little segregation of the dining hall.

mike

Ok, I am a suburban white kid like most Illinois students. However, I still believe Illinois is a highly diverse campus. I've made some close friend with people that were not only a different race, but a different race from anyone at my high school. The student body is highly aware of the world around them and one of the best features of everyday life in the dorms is having discussions about politics, the economy, or even religion. I met a lot of kids that go to Church regularly and a lot that don't.
