What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Stephanie

If I were to talk to parents about college and their child, I would tell them to sit down and talk to their child and listen to them. Give the child a chance to tell you what they wants to do.Encourage them to select a major.Discuss where they might what to go. Maybe deep down inside they already have a school in mind somewhere away from home. Parents don't freak out if your child wants to move far from home.Maybe the school that is far from home might be the best choice for your child and their study. There are books out there that have lists and descriptions of thousands of colleges and universities, or simply use the internet. Parents, dont make this decision for your child, simply help them.Once you have selected a school, take your child to that school and take a tour and meet some of the professors. No matter what school or areer they choose, show infinite amounts of support. Help your chid move into the dorm, but don't do everything for them. The child has to realize that this (college) is the beginning to life, in a sense.

My advice to a future college student is to be open minded about everything. You never know what other people can teach you or how that person can assist you in your future. Be willing to try new things and meet new people. Some of the greatest memories I have, are from doing things I always said I would not do. When it comes to homework, time management is key. Do not forget to have fun, and always show up to your classes. Schedual classes around your lifestyle. If you have a hard time waking up in the morning, do not schedual morning classes. Keep a planner, and attend office hours of your teacher. They are good references to have.. Make sure to call home every once in a while.

Some advice that I would to parents and students would be make sure that you will be able to afford the college of your choice in the long run. Students find out long you will have to be in school to get your desired degree and make sure you choose somewhere that you will be able to stay for that amount of time. I think that making multiple visits to the school of your choice is a very good idea. Even try and find someone you could stay over night with away from your parents so you can see more of what goes on, on campus behind closed doors to make sure you will like it. If you don't think a sorority or fraternity is for you make sure that there are social events you can join or participate in other than those for sororities and fraternities so you will be able to stay active in the school community.

Jessica

Visit all the colleges, sit in on a class, talk to past and present students.

Visit many different Universities and choose the one that fits you the best. Do not get caught up in where your friends or classmates are going, because you are the one that will be completing the assignments and living in the dorms eating campus food. Search yourself and make a list of what you are looking for from your college experience. Parents and students also need to look at the schools academic program in their intended major. Do not be afraid to get out there and ask questions and make sure you and the college are a good fit. Talk to professors, talk to students, sit in on classes, attend social events, attend athletic events, and make sure that the college has the diversity and resources to accomodate your needs and your interest.

To find the right college a parent/student must first know what they will require of said college. For instance if a student wants a degree in Biology they would not want to apply for a college that focuses on English majors. Next, a parent/student must look into financial aid and determine which college they can afford to attend. Once this has been determined and the student picks a college it is important to become involved with student activities. This helps the student to meet new friends and become involved with the surrounding community. The student should study hard, but remember that it is important to also take part in activities outside of school. Students should also avoid drinking while in college. Drinking can lead to health issues and adversly affect their academic standing. Overall, students should research their college of choice, looking not only at the academia of the college but also what the college offers outside of classwork.

Visit as many schools as possible, when you get a feeling that you just know that is where you will be happy, then that is where you are suppose to be. Don't let parents or friends influence where you want to be, parents will be proud of you no matter what, and your friends will always be there if they are true friends, and trust me, you will me so many new people in college. Its the best time of your life! Be sure that you work hard, go to class as much as possible, and have a strong balance with your social life with going out and meeting people, as well as being involved in as much as you can, you wil make the most of your college experience!

Find a school away from home. That's the most important thing in becoming an adult. After that, you need to look at schools that offer what you're looking for in your education; majors, class size, job placement, etc. Finally, just go for a place that you'd like to live at--you'll be there for four years at the least--might as well enjoy looking at it.

Emily

Make sure you plan ahead and have plenty of money so that finances don't become an issue in where you are able to attend.

Daniel

Apply early.

The most important thing to do when looking into what school to attend, is explore all your options. Don't just settle for the school where you parents went or the school where your best friend is going - really search what is available. Just because a school is very prominent does not mean it is the school for you. Keep in mind that quality education can be found in all schools, public or private, big or small. There are so many factors to consider - price, majors, size, location, etc. - but there are many useful sites that can help you narrow down your choices to those that could really work for you. Visit schools - really get a feel for what it is like to go there. A thorough search will allow you to get the most out of your college experience. When you find that school, you'll have to develop techniques for managing your time and using the time that you have wisely. Figure out when the best time for you to schedule your classes is, find a good time to study, and don't forget to save some time for fun! Relax and don't stress out too much!

The most obvious advice that everyone gives is to pick the college you feel the most comfortable at. This is the wrong answer. High school students should pick the college that will give them the greatest challange. Don't take the easy way out. Choose the college that you the student will receive the most out of. Leaving best friends behind is hard but it will make you grow as a human being. College is not only about new experiences and meeting people but is also about truely finding out who you are. and where better than a new place with new people. I know this won't win the contest and likely will be thrown away but I want to ask one favor out of the reader of this. Please pick some advice that will help high school students. I wish I received some better advice when I was a senior in high school than I did. The advice I received was I think you could excel at a school like that and feel right at home with all your friends being right there with you. MY ADVICE: Pick the college where you feel the most neverous about.

Christopher

Get involved!

College is all about experiences. When choosing a college find one that you think will best suit your needs. Also make sure to see how much support you can get from the college. One of the best parts about my college is all the help available if I need it. Say you don't get into the college you hoped for, it's okay. I think that the college experience is more important and can help students get real world experiece. I'd definitly suggest living in a dorm for at least one year or semester. You will meet so many of your peers living in the doms and make many many friends. Also make sure to get involved around campus as well as doing work for school. The more involved you get the more you can from the college experience.

Finding a college or university that fits you well can be very tough. I recommend visitng as many schools as you can. You can't get a real feel for a school unless your actually on that campus. Take a tour, talk to students and ask them what their experience has been like, and make sure its right for you. Parents should be open to letting their children explore as many schools as possible even if they are far away from home. Sometimes its hard for parents to let their children go away, but it could be the best thing for their child. It's very easy to make the most of your college experience....you just have to get INVOLVED!!!!! When you get involved in an organization on campus then you will feel a better connection to the university, you will meet life long friends, and have something to do on the weekends. Finding your niche is key. Also, be open to meeting new people and learning about new ideas. Is that not the reason why your there in the first place?
