How often should I phone home? Is once a day too much?

You should phone home as much as you want to. I personally am from Miami and will call my parents every other day and it's nothing out of the odd. A lot of people are close to their family and will call them often. However, there are also students that don't really call their parents all that much. It's really up to you. I would advise that you try to branch out and try new things the first year of college because there are so many opportunities available and lots of people meet their long-time college friends in their first year (although this may be different for everyone).
