There are so many different types of students at Michigan.

Emily

depressing weather, cookie cutter people

David

Extremely smart students, really competitive

Naomi

Tristan

Affluent East Coast Jews, Frat Boys, Blonde Sorority girls, marginalized minorities, nerdy socially akaward engineers

Madison

Smart, Wealthy - especially the out of state students, studious, snobbish, large contingents of Asian and Jewish students

James

Ironically enough, there's quite diversity to the stereotypes about Michigan students. Many involve Big 10 culture--everyone's in a fraternity or sorority, football obsessed, rich, white and from the state of Michigan. Before I came to U of M, a few people had also told me that they've heard University of Michigan girls aren't as attractive as girls at other Michigan universities. When I got here though, I found that that was definitely not the case. Another student I spoke with about the rumor suggested it was a lie made up by jealous rejected applicants. Ann Arbor also has a reputation for being a free-spirited, liberal, cultured, quirky, hippie-town.

Caleb

Lots of dumb Greek students. All students come from affluent families. We've got lots of asians. Everyone loves football games and wears U of M logos.

colin

Uh, I dn? Relative to what? It's a vast population and a top public university, meaning that by definition there is a varied collection of people who, while generally smart to some degree, have vastly different interests. To that extent, I will say that there really isn't much hindrance when it comes to pursuing whatever you want, either in school or without. If you want to do it, the size of the school is such that there will be at least a few others that want to do it and probably already are. I mean there's a friggin club for the terrifyingly huge squirrels that some mistake for "cute," when they should be described as "fearless bushy tailed rats."

Jennifer

That as students we are unattractive and not very fun

Ryan

they are stuck up and full of themselves

megan

well, there are two main types: the pretentious artsy trendy hipster and the obsessive nerdy overachiever

Natalie

All smart, not fun. All jewish.

Matt

The biggest stereotype about michigan is that we have the ugliest girls in all of the big ten. And I will stand up tall and tell you RIGHT NOW that stereotype is...true. These girls might have had a higher GPA in high school than there best friends partying at University of Iowa, and it shows. When traveling the big ten no one has girls that are as nasty as those at Michigan.

Charlie

While there are specific stereotypes regarding certain schools and organizations within UM (i.e. engineering, RC, fraternities/sororities), the school itself is far too diverse to have an all encompassing stereotype...except maybe that we are smart and work a lot, and really like football.

Brett

Michigan students are stereotypically rich, elitist, nerdy, or egocentric.

Natasha

Michigan is the best big ten school. it has the perfect balance of education and partying. the students party very hard. the campus is very diverse. it is essential to live on the hill and your life will be miserable if you live on north campus.

Laura

Some people say that its not as big of a party school as Michigan State, and that all anyone does is study.

Parker

everyone is really smart and that they party really hard

Rory

That all of the girls have a sense of entitlement and only care about guys in popular fraternities, and the guys are in those fraternities are all guidos.

Emily

Michigan students are on two spectrums. They are either the hippy-Ann Arbor type or the over-privledged out of stater. There is a distinct line between these two groups. The Ann Arbor hippies wander around Ann Arbor, smoking pot, without a care. The out of staters infiltrate the Greek system and the bar scene- which is immensely underage. There people overwhelm the city with their obnoxious displays of wealth and most of all overwhelm the usually humble Ann Arbor atmosphere.

Tate

That all of the girls are ugly. That we are all high achieving snobs. That it is a completely secular campus and you cannot find any religious groups

Olivia

That everyone at Michigan is Jewish That everyone is stuck up That over 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is from Michigan That it is a hippie liberal school

Morgan

Everyone is Jewish There is noone not in Greek Life Every boy is a frat boy

Erika

That girls are bitchy and materialistic

Jeff

Ugly guys/girls, nerdy students, terrible social life. Some positive stereotypes are smart/desirable hires out of college, great football school.

Devin

Everyone associates Michigan with football and assumes that students who apply to the university are already diehard Wolverines. Also, people label Michigan as the school for Ivy League rejects.

Amy

I had heard that Michigan was full of pretentious, rich elitists. Some people told me the city was uber liberal while others said it was all "yuppies." The academic programs are supposedly among the best in the country, and the football team is infamous. Several of my high school peers declined to apply here for the reason that they perceived it as "too big".

Stella

Michigan students and/or the campus are known to be very liberal. Michigan is also known as the breeding ground for social justice. For the most part, Michigan students are also seen as predominantly well off, especially those that are out-of-state. The University of Michigan is also known for being the stronghold for diversity.

Kelly

The biggest stereotype that I've heard is that Michigan students are arrogant.

Chelsey

Some of the stereotypes at of Michigan students are that we have huge ego's and believe that we are smarter and better than everyone else.

Angela

Everyone is Jewish! Jewish girls are spoiled. There are lots of liberal students. There are crazy things going on in the center of campus every day. The girls are ugly. Michigan is hard.

Kelly

None really come to mind. Maybe that we are superior students. Maybe that we have superiority complexes.

Ariella

I think a lot of people would say Michigan students are arrogant, especially when talking to students at Michigan State University.

Carol

Students assume that U of M is not diverse enough. What they mean is: it's not black enough. Last year when U of M was forced to publish their demographics after Proposal 2 passed, the website went from noting a 9{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} black student population to a 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} black studen population. Being on campus-the 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} is much closer to the truth. With 19{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the country describing themselves as black-it's illegal discrimination to permit 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students to be black. It's racial prejudice against the "evil white man". U of M makes it well known that white people are just hum-drum and have few important ideas. From forcing students to take "multi-cultural" (aka black) understanding orientations, to having special counseling programs, scholarships, extra-curricular activities and financial aid grants for black students-it's obvious whose really getting the raw deal here. Diversity doesn't just mean black. It means ALL skin colors, ALL economic groups, ALL types of students. There are so many students who are returning adults, single moms, divorcees, transgender, homosexual, multi-racial, physical and mental disabilities, poverty-level majority (what you'd call "poor white trash" b/c no one events nice terms for white kids w/ no money), ect... why aren't these people acknowledged? Why is the office of cultural affairs only targeting black students? What about the rest of us?

Jamie

Spoiled, pompous, overachieving, like to party.

Andrew

Elitist, effete, intellectual snobs. More importantly, we are a diverse academic culture that is intelligent enough to go beyond meaningless divisive issues and discuss what's important.

Ashley

People think that U-M students are stuck up and conceited.

Mark

1) that all they do is study 2) that they're rich, stuck-up, etc. 3) that the girls (and maybe the guys?) are less attractive than other schools
