University of Nevada-Reno Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Elaine

Due to the large class sizes it is sometimes difficult to feel engaged in the teacher. Until you have reached the upper 300 level classes you are normally in class sizes of 100 to 200 students. This creats a disconnect between teacher and student as well as a lack of accountability.

Jacqueline

Students are treated like children and supervised like children and students are not encouraged to think on their own.

Timothy

The worst thing about my school - and the University of Nevada, Reno is a fantastic school - is its size. Of course, as a state university, its size means huge resources and the ability to educate thousands of students without prohibitive tuition cost. However, large classes make it difficult to build relationships with professors and other students. I believe that interaction with others, especially of other generations or cultural backgrounds, can be an invaluable part of the education experience, and simply learning the material presented in class is only the beginning of what college should be.

Razia

A negative aspect to the University of Nevada Reno is that majority of the upper level science and math courses contain over 200 students. This overwhelms the students along with some professors. Time can not be equally divided.

Cathy

The worst thing about my school is the food. It's difficult to accomodate both a vegetarian and healthy diet because most of the food they serve ath the dining hall is greasy, fast-food, and meat. Even the salad options are dull; after all, I can only take so many meals eating spinach and fat-free dressing.

Kristine

The worst thing about UNR would probably be the location. Although its located in Downtown Reno where everything is close by, downtown is not the safest place in Reno. There are many shootings, roberies and even sexual assults. Walking around campus, especially at night doesnt feel safe and I would like to feel safe at school. The school does do a fair job with keeping students safe with services such as Campus Escort, but the location of the school is in an unsafe part of town.

Alyssa

I don't really think there are any flaws to my school, I really enjoy the campus and all of my classes were wonderful.

Brian

The social aspect of the school, it is too much. needs more focus on education.

Connor

Along with numerous other campusses, the University of Nevada has plenty students who do not make education the number one priority. Many students believe partying is a part of college and they are right in a sense. Partying safely and without drugs and alcohol is right to do, but students take it to the extreme. I do not respect or supoprt that.

Anne

The worst thing about my school is what the students get for the tuition they pay. Although there are state of the art buildings with many features in the classrooms, the dorms are not air-conditioned. The students have to pay for things that are needed in class but are not included in the already pricy tuition like scantrons and clickers. These little extra things add up for students, which makes affording college increasingly difficult.

Zhipei

Technically, University of Nevada, Reno is a fairly good school for students who wish to accomplish their academic goals. I love studying in its beautiful campus, while a lot of advanced facilities are going to be provided, it's totally cool! However, the worst thing should be increased tuition.

Jacqueline

I can honestly say there is nothing bad about the University of Nevada, Reno.

Amanda

The worst thing about the University of Nevada, Reno would be the rising tuition rates every year. Although this university is among the most affordable, it is constantly becoming more expensive for students to attend this school especially if they do not receive financial aid. Along with rising tuition, the university is also receiving budget cuts. Various departments are being cut, faculty is losing their jobs, and students are working to keep their departments intact.

Drury

I dislike that I have to park so far away from some of my classes. I also don't like how sometimes the classes I need are not immediately available to me.

Aradhana

the lack of focus

Devon

I dislike alchoholism and the trend to be degrading in behavior and conduct. I feel that higher learning should be accompanied with higher levels of reasoning and intellectual language.

Robert

Parking Services. They are unruly! If your meter runs out, you have an averate of six minutes to get back before you've been cited. As well, the cheapest parking option is a parking lot an actual, physical mile from the other end of campus. There are shuttles and such which you can take, but they only traverse half the campus, so at the very least, you'd still be 7-8 minutes walking to a class in that building (which, for science majors, is the only building they have classes in).

Ashley

THe worst thing about my school, thus far, is the parking. It is expensive to park on campus, and there are very few parking options, even off campus, that do not cost hundreds of dollars. However, if you do find affordable parking, it tends to be a pain in the butt to get to the majority of your classes.

Stacy

The fact that they have to make a lot of budget cuts which includes cutting some of the classes that I may need or the degree program as a whole.

Shaun

Parking is the wosrt thing about my school. Being able to find a parking space is a trying and complicated thing. A person needs to buy a parking permit to park and those change on the area you park in. The cost is also increased if you want to park closer. My problem is that I have a physical disability so I cannot walk that far and need a close spot. The bus system is great on campus, but it is hard going up and down steps.

Brandon

Just the DC food seems to be the same and it gets boring. Other than that the dorms are nice, the campus is beautiful and the teachers and professors are very friendly and ready to help if they need to.

Megan

The school where I recieved my BA degree is a smaller University. There are limited prgrams to go into as a graduate student, which forced me to consider other Universities out of State. I am currently going to the Univeristy of Arizona Tucson in the Art Education program under the School of Art focusing on Museum and Community Art. I would have loved to stay at UNR for any graduate program offered in the ARTdepartment, however they only recently sbegan an MFA program allowing 4 new students to enter each time. Not an accessable program to get into.

Stephanie

I would say that the worst thing about my school is the lack of communication. It is very difficult to get ahold of anyone, mainly administation.

Chelsey

When it came down to this question I took nearly an hour disecting what the worst thing could be about the University of Nevada Reno. The one major thing that I can think of is how our library is not open longer during the hours people prefer. Our main library is only open till midnight and most students who occupy that area wish it could be open longer hours. People tend to me more mad during the exam week, where the library is only open till twelve on dead day when exams are the next day, it should be longer.

Harrison

U.N.R. is unfortunately the beacon of prosperity in a city that is wrought with crime and filth. It is difficult to feel safe walking even 300 yards into the city. I have, on occasion been aggressively followed by bums that made me fear for my life. The campus itself is a sanctuary in what feels like a warzone. Downtown Reno harbors some of the most vile thieves and drug-abusers and is only a 10-minute walk away. It is shameful that such a wonderful domicile is marred by a putrid locale.

Joey

The worst thing about UNR is that it is not that well known.

Jill

At this time, the University of Nevada, Reno seems to be at the mercy of a bureucracy that has been short-sighted in its management of University resurces. There is an outrageous amount of buoilding going on on campus and at the same time, the university is cutting programs right and left. UNR has prided itself on offering over 80 master's programs, but has not adequately prioritized the funding and staffing of these programs.

Kassandra

Well there are two things that I don't really like about my school. One is that the upper division classes are only offered once a year. Second sometime the library is so full in load that it is hard to study.

Alyssa

The worst thing about IUPUI is that it is a commuter school. That means the majority of people drive to campus everyday. Before I became I student here I did not believe it was a problem, but I now realize it is. On campus during weekends, there are barely any students walking around. I wish the campus had more activities and was more social.

Garrett

The only thing that I would say is extremele detrimental to the student-university relationship is the tuiton. It really is quite a challenge. I would recommend to any enterprising young student to be very sure and aware of their college budget.

Lauren

with the current budget cuts, they have cut all the extra programs that helped student suceed, for example, math center, tutoring center are now closed.

Sam

Parking tickets. I understand that they are a pivotal method of funding for the university, but it sure is a nuissance for broke students to be charged 30-50 dollars for either a slightly underpiad meter or parking without a parking pass. It certaintly isn't a crushing blow to my perception of this universtiy though, I still immensly enjoy every walk to class, most lectures, and a near majority of my fellow students.

Lorae

The worst thing about my school I would have to say is the lack of respect for students living on campus. The residential halls are considered our homes for the time being at school and I feel that is taken advantage of. The staff and Residential Assistants seem to come up with new, overprotective or unreasonable rules. Their unneccesary acts cannot be backed up with reasoning when asked why they were put in place. Holding "mandatory" meetings every two weeks is unreasonable in that I did not sign and agree to it in the contract.

Matthew

The worse thing considered about this school is it is a little to big for a campus because it is hard to find where your going and what class your attending. The layout of the campus can throw new freshman off and can easily be lost on where to go. This is the worst thing that the campus has to offer and overall is a good campus.

Caitlin

I think the budget cuts are the worst thing ever. It's affecting the entire campus. Some things the cuts have the most impact on are classroom sizes, the number of professors, class sections, food choices, parking passes, and acceptance and graduation rates.

Hannah

The worst part about the University of Nevada, Reno is it can be easy to be distracted from school because the surrounding area has so much to offer in the way of extracurricular and outdoor activities.

Brian

There's not as much academic interrest among the students as i'd like, but it's not a party school either.

Ashley

The teachers are not flexible with thier teaching styles and often my classes are straight lecture for 50mins-2.5 hours. I also do not like that the students and some faculity are not open to differing ideas of politics and religion.

Sarah

People don't care about academics enough

Kasey

University food would have to be the worst thing I've experienced on campus. I've only eaten campus food twice for good reason. First, it's way over price and secondly isn't of good quality. They do try to provide an array of food from sandwiches to Chinese to sushi, but unfortunately the food has yet to impress me.

Nicole

Graduate School counceling could use some work.

Rachel

The student body because they are univolved, unfriendly, unwilling to help others (ie underclassmen), and think that they are better then everyone and this isolates them and others.

Christopher

The cost of parking.

james

There's nothing bad about this school.

Kelsey

The stereotype that Reno is only full of casinos and prostitutes.

Michaela

The worst thing about the school is the cost of parking and books because they are very pricy and add an additional burden to an already difficult financial situation.

Shari

There is little diversity in Northern Nevada, and that's reflected on campus.

Loretta

Currently, my school is cutting its funds due to a budget crisis. Programs are being eliminated, and it is affecting many students. For example, I work as a tutor for our math department. We offer free tutoring to any student in need; however, our program has been considered "unnecessary." After May 2009, there will no longer be a Math Center and I will no longer have a jog on campus.

Rachel

The only real problem I've had with this school concerns the math department. I've had three teachers so far and two of them spoke awful English and were hard to understand. The only good teacher I had moved on to bigger and better things. While that's easy to get over, the fact that each class has 100 to 200 students in it makes the learning enviornment more difficult to wade through than it should be.

Taylor

The worst thing about my school is that the lay of the land is not as flat. There are some small hills and lots of stairs which can make it difficult if you have breathing problems.
