What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Ruby

When I began college I felt that I knew exactly what I wanted from my life and college experience. However, from the day I recieved my accpetance letter and learned that I was not accepted into the nursing program as I had hoped, I was forced to reconsider my options. For a type A planner such as myself this was a tough reality to face, especially since I really wanted to attend this school. Through this defeat I was able to learn the importance of considering all my options and what is best for me before even setting foot on my campus. Throughout my first semester I have repeatedly been challenged to reconsider my beliefs and desires. For instance, when my roommate and I did not get along I was required to think critically about creative ways to solve the situation and although in the end, we did separate I was able to learn to be more assertive and stand up for my beliefs and what is best for myself. This will allow me to continue my college experience in the same way; with an open mind and growing values.

During my time at college I have learned alot but possibly the most important and helpful thing college has given me is independence. Living on my own at college has given me more confidence and taught me how to deal with the people around me. In turn college has helped me to grow as a person.

My college experience is far from over (I'm in my final term for my Associate's degree, and will be in college until I complete a Master of Library/Information Science degree, hopefully in 2015 or 2016) but I've already gained so much knowledge of myself and the world around me. I've changed my prospective career path from teaching English to teaching German to becoming a Librarian; I've experienced the marvels of Shakespeare for the first time; I've met amazing people, students and professors alike; and I've learned about my amazing abilities to complete impressive work under the pressure of a deadline. My mother holds two associate's degrees, but no one in my family has ever completed a bachelor's degree, and it means everything to me to have the opportunity to complete my higher education and thus enter a career which will enable me to provide even better opportunities for my future children. My mother and sister have lived on goverment aid for the past 18 years and it's very important to me to be able to provide independant income for myself, and my family.

My college experience has opened up many possibilities and helps me to build and reinforce a strong sense of self confidence and worth. It continues to aid in my personal growth by broadening my perspectives while adding to my knowledge of the world. The different points of views of the students and professors I have encountered have enlightened my life, their perspectives and personal experiences adding value to my life and my education. Also, as my personal values and beliefs are challenged, I am being refined. Outdated or incorrect knowledge, old views, and empty beliefs are changed or transformed as I learn new things and later manifest into the principles and values found in my everyday life. My education is quickly becoming one of my most cherished experiences and I believe because of it, I will make learning a key part of my life well after my collegiate career has ended. What is most important is that the quality of my education will help set a shining example for my son, showing not only how important a good education is but its value both on a personal and social level.

I grew up miniutes away from the city of Boston. I have always been in or around the city majority of my life. When applyiing to college I knew I wanted to go to somewhere that was not city like. The University of New Hampshire was my pick of choice. I felt a sense of community, and called this my home away from home. In the classroom the professors challenged us, because they wanted us to succeed. The administration has been more than helpful, especially with my tough financial situation. My mother is a single mom and the financial advisors have gone out of there way to help my family. Though they have done that, we still continue to to just barely get by. My mother is glad that I attend the school which is why I have not transferred to an in-state college. Being here at the University of New Hampshire has taught me to be a stronger and have a better out-look in life. You have to work hard to get to where you want to be, being here has showed me that, and I am very greatful that I attend the University of New Hampshire.

I have learned that there are plenty of holes to be filled in our teaching systems. Teachers can be flawed, and we can learn just as much from those that disappoint and betray us, as we can from those that inspire. The inspiring few are now even more precious to me, because I have seen what can constitute an "educator" in the most technical sense. I have been horrified at the conduct and skills of more than one professor, and this makes it all the more special when I come across a great teacher. Both the good and the bad have inspired me to seek a life as an educator, and to guide and instruct truly inquisitive minds. I have had few professors that I could call mentors in the truest sense, and I aim to fill the role of what a teacher can and should be. My displeasure at my current college experience will be what drives me to greater heights in the future, and has led me to demand more of myself. I will succeed where others have failed me and my peers.

leticia

I have learned how to deal with people and to believe on myself. But most important, I have learned that there is nothing impossible, with hardwork and dedication I am able to reach any goal I set to myself. My dream is to become a dentist, and now that I am in college I am not going to give up until I reach my dream.

Rachel

The most valuable thing that I have gotten out of college so far is all the new friendships I have made. I am meeting people all across the states and it feels really good to finally feel like you belong in a community that understands where you are coming from. There are others that understand what you are studying for, and every person that I have met on campus is there for the same reason; to better themselves. It is uplifting to be surrounded by people that are just as determined to succeed in life. It's also liberating to feel that sense of independence while living on campus. I am attending college, not only to make lasting friendships, and gain independence, but also to pursue my love for Biology. I get to learn more about stem cell research and the advancements in biomedicine, which only a college experience could provide. Without the aid of my professors, I doubt that a career in biology would be possible for me in the future. I believe that everyone should have the right to a college experience.

Alaina

Since I have started college, I have found it much easier to sort through, organize, and accomplish my goals. I have also figured out the direction that I want to go with my life, I want to be a midwife. College has shown me that I am able to accomplish much more than I ever thought possible.

Jessica

Throughout my college experience, I have made great relationships with many students and professors who have made my education more memorable. I enjoy learning new things regarding Healthcare, nutrition particularly, and I feel well prepared to begin a career based on the education I have received. Education is very important to me and has enriched my life more than anything else has. I feel that without education, I would not be as equipped to do my part in society and give back.

Andrea

I've learned to be independent with studying and my every day living experiences. The people on campus are friendly the events are planned professionally and we all look forward to the special concerts the school offers. I find my courses at UNH are of value to me because I have learned so much more than what I was taught in high school. I truly believe the professors know what they are talking about and they make sure each and every student understands the criteria. I am eager for my next few years of college so upon my graduation I will have a large advantage over others coming from such a great school.

Daniel

I have really enjoyed learning. In high school I didn't pay that much attention and just got by, but at UNH I like the classes I take, I like most of my professors and I am pretty excited about community planning. I have also met some great people and made good friends. Since it is only 1 hour from home, I can go home and work in outdoor rec, such as Cranmore Mtn ski area in the winter and Monkey Trunks ropes course in the summer. I think these positions are giving me good experience in the working world. My classes have also let me work with some amazing people for research projects. For instance, I worked with someone from NASA who has a vacation home in NH and lets people come and invent "green" ideas to help save the enviroment and make energy more productive. I know alot of my professors and we have great discussions in the classroom. I know college will be valuable to my future career, but I think it is valuable to the enjoyment of my life right now.

Andrea

So far, my college experience has been a sense of accomplishment. To know I can stand on my own without my parents help anymore. Confidence. I've made many friendships along the way and there is still more to come. College makes me feel like i'm succeeding and that's the best feeling in the world. When i'm done with school i'll know that I have completed a long term goal and start on another one. College is valuable to attend because nowadays you need a college degree. No matter what you go into, jobs are starting to want to see a degree. You won't go far without one.

Michelle

When entering college, don't get me wrong I was excited to break free from my house and small town, but I was beyond nervous. What would my roomates be like? Will I have enough to do? Will the large lectures allow me to ask questions and be an active learner? These questions and hundreds of more consumed my thoughts when I arrived, but quickly, and as cheesy as this may sound, I felt I really belonged at UNH. My three core science classes were challenging, which taught me to put in more effort than all my other years in school. I learned how to study and work in a lab setting with a partner for a whole semster. I learned about the stresses of exams and how to finally over come my weakness of test taking. But, besides the advances I have made in education, which will continue as I progress through my next four years. I have already made friends that are real and more down to earth than the "convienent" friends of high school. These friends have helped me to break out of my shell and to fully enjoy all the aspects of college.

My college experience has exposed me to other cultures, and allowed me to realize their importance. I have been privelaged to have to the opportunity to learn Arabic, and learn not only about the rich and vibrant language, but the cultures and peoples that speak it. I have taken geography courses, which have exposed me to countless fascinating areas and groups of peoples. Also, I have been able to take a course in international affairs, which examined the relationships between different states, organizations, and groups of peoples. This course showed enlightened me to the fact that these relationships and awareness of other cultures is increasingly imporantant, due to globalization, and integration of all aspects of international affairs. Attending college has also been valuable in that it has given me firsthand exposure to people of other cultures. My roommate is of Iranian descent, and has given me much insight into his culture. I live across the hall from a South Korean student, who has also taught me much about their culture. Many of my professors, guest lecturers, and other friends are of different backgrounds, which has given me invaluable understanding about different cultures of the world, and their importance.

Samantha

Throughout my college experience, I have learned valuable lessons in time management and responsibility. I have learned what it means to work hard and take my time to do well. I have also learned that my grades reflect how hard I worked and in order to get the better grade, I need to put in that much more effort into my studies. I have made many good friends at this school and feel like I have found the perfect career for myself. I also feel like attending this University has given me a better sense of who I am as an individual and provided me with the space and resources I needed to become more independent and responsible. The course work is at times vigorous and challenging and assingments at times seem impossible, but I have learned that I am much more capable of doing complicated work and problem solving than I had ever thought. Attending this Univeristy has made me very proud of myself and much more confident. I feel that I am able to accel in life and make intelligent decisions in life and also come to knowlegable conclusions in my studies.

Leandra

At this school I have meet some of the most interesting people, I have taken classes that I had never imagined, and I have produced work and gotten results that I could only have dreamed of before. Countless opportunities have been presented to me because of the school I go to, and I am proud to be a student there. It is the perfect size and location for who I am and what I need. In attending this school, I was assured that I could do whatever I wanted and I was even given the chance to try them all out. I have gotten who I am today out of my college experience.

George

So far my college experience has been memorable . I'm studying what I love to talk about and I'm playing my favorite sport at a level I never thought I could play at. I have gained so much knowledge about nutrition in the past three semesters and there are still two years left. I'm apart of an amazing track team, a team that I have dreamed playing for. The brotherhood and leadership skills I have obtained from this team is unimaginable. To me there is nothing more valuable than doing what you love and i'm doing just that.

Justin

College is a time to learn and grow. My experience in college has been no less than spectacular. I've attended community college and a vocational school where I've made long lasting friendships. The knowledge I've attained has helped me through some tough times. I've been able to use my skills as a culinarian to supplement my pocketbook throughout my college career. I can not wait to return to school so I am able to develop new skills and create new networks for my long term goals and careers. College has provided me with a new outlook, and it has given me a new perspective. I value learning from someone that is passionate about the subject he or she represents. My former English professor has provided me with a passion for reading that I never had before. I treasure the passion she ignited for me. It is because of people like her that students will be inspired for years to come!

Theresa

I have received a vast amount of knowlege! I have also been blessed to have made friends and acquaintances on and off campus. It is a daunting task of returning to school at my age but I tell everyone it was the best decision I ever made. Perhaps by my proclaiming this to people I don't even know it would inspire someone else of an advanced age to return to school to complete their studies. The camaraderie of the student body, regardless of ones age, the professors that are easily accessible and the campus facilitators have all been great to work with and I would recommend to everyone if you are going back to school to do it and always check out the community college!

Lindsey

I have become more socially and academically confident as a result of my college experience. Before college I was somewhat shy and rather insecure. When setting off for college, students are vulnerable and really putting themselves out there without knowing what to expect. College forced me to put my fears and shyness behind me. I find myself much more socially confident which has made me happier and more successful in every aspect. I'm walking away with a large social network and a plethora of social skills. My academics have improved tremendously as well. I have finally found my passion, psychology, and have found myself eager to keep learning more. During my college experience, I was able to explore the counrty of South Africa for five months. This experience taught me that learning doesn't just take place in a classroom. Going abroad really forced me to maintain an open-mind and it taught me to appreciate all people and their differences. Overall, attending college has been and amazing and valuable experience. It has created an environment of learning in all areas, not academically exclusive.

So far, my college experience at the University of New Hampshire has been a rewarding one. I graduated from a highschool of just about 1,300 students and when I entered college as a first-year student of 13,00 other undergrads, I was intimidated, but also eager to take full advantage of the opportunities college provided. Future opportunities are so crucial to myself and my family since I am a first-generation student. My family came to America when I was two years old from Damascus, Syria and from the time we moved, they have demonstrated how important a college education is. I am currently a nursing major and hope that I can help others to the best of my ability once I graduate. I continue to guide my younger brother as he journeys through his education and I strive to instill the very morals in him my parents have so successfully demonstrated towards me and my older sister. I sincerely believe education is the most important investment one can make and I live by this statement, in order to make the most out of what is available.

Kyle

I have received a lot of knowledge from the business school I attend. I have learned to really work for what I want and to take things more seriously. It is valuable because it professionalism is a characteristic that is needed after college is over.

Ashley

In my college experiences I have learned that one must get involved with extra curricular projects. These projects open a doorway to meeting new people with like interests. In the career field nine times out of ten it is who you know rather than what you know, but it is always a good idea to make sure what you know holds value. When there is a balance of who you know and what you know you become professionally well-rounded, therefore making you a valuable employee/entrepreneur. It is no surprize that what has been most valuable to me in attending college is my studies teaching me how to be valuable.

Emily

As a California native, I went to college in New England to experience new and outside my comfort zone. I lived in the dorms, sang in an a cappella group, rowed for the Women's crew team and was the first to declare a dual major of Nursing and International Affairs. I had excellent guidance for study abroad in Africa, the Caribbean and Central America and unmatched support for creating a tailored curriculum. I would recommend the school to any student looking to marry nature with nurture, as my University of New Hampshire experience centered me in the peaceful surroundings of the New Hampshire coast which grounded me as a young adult and simultaneously thrust me into a competitive and academically challenging environment. I had the chance to grow as a young person and to become a confident woman with aspirations, goals and the resonating understanding that success is within my grasp. My college years are remembered fondly and with recognition of the hard emotional and physical work it is to grow up. My college experience provided the necessary support for that challenge and gave me a foundation to build upon in my personal and professional life.

Before coming to college I never had anything I wanted so bad I would do anything for. Now that I am in school, I have decided that I really want to be a teacher when I graduate. I have worked assistant teaching in the past and I loved it and it is absolutely what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. The education program at UNH is very competitive and hard to get into. I applied to it in the fall and was rejected so every since then I have been working extremely hard, meeting with my teachers outside of class, doing every extra credit opportunity that arises, so I can improve my grades and hopefully be accepted in when I re-apply in the spring. I have never wanted anything so bad in my life and being at college has taught me that life does not just hand you what you want; you have to work hard to get it. The general education I will receive here is going to be so valuable for me when I enter the "real world" along with the life long friends and experiences I will have gained.

When I was younger, I was attached to a doll my mother had given to me as a gift. Unlike most other young girls I didn’t fix her hair or match her shoes with her outfit. I was constantly pretending that she needed surgery for a bizarre disease or a cast put on her broken arm. If she was sick or hurt, I was there to help. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to help those who are sick and I am determined to follow my dream. I have always been very driven in anything I set out to accomplish. My most recent goal is to become a registered nurse. More specifically, I want to work with children as a pediatric nurse. I have a big heart and I know if I were given the chance to follow my dream of helping children, that I wouldn’t just be caring for them with bandages and medicine.

Justin

I have learned a great deal from my college experience, as much socially as educationally. I have learned many valuable life skills like patience, tolerance, and acceptance. Living with two other people in a small dorm room, and 30 people sharing the same common areas demands each of these on a daily basis. I strive to avoid conflict with all these people, and learn as much as I can from the unique knowledge they bring from their very different life experiences. I think that I have learned a lot form all these people, and have become a much more well rounded person because of this. I enjoy living at UNH, and wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

Ben

College has given me the opportunity to meet new people and discover new aspects of my education and life. Through my short time already on this campus, UNH has shown me that there is a plentiful array of choices to make in life and places to explore. Whether it's talking to a fellow student or approaching a friendly faculty member, I have found that people in this world are friendly and here to help me on my journey. I am getting an education while in college that deals with my profession, but I am also learning what it is to live a life with those around me instead of just drifting through the years with no interactions.

Megan

Choice - College is a time when one is really given the opportunity to chose who they want to be, what they want to stand for and how they are going to accomplish their goals in life. I was amazed to see students around me settling for less. Whether it was taking the easy road in terms of their class load or choosing to not stand up for something they believed. I saw laziness take a hold of many students. This made me sad, however, it also inspired me to change what I could and to work hard to get as much out of the experience I could. I think one of the best things I did in college was spending the year as a dorm resident assistant. As hard as it may have been to balance all the expectations of the job and my academic work, I learned a lot about myself and about what it meant to live in a community of diverse people. I was constantly pushed out of my comfort zone and was also constantly inspired by the residents who lived on my floor.

Kathleen

I believe that I have become a better world citizen, I have developed a true sense of myself, and I have learned that what you get out of college is how much you want to get out of college. In other words, our learning is up to us, it is not given to us, we have to go after it. I have become a better citizen by learning that I want to help others, and teach others. I am currently enrolled as a Graduate student to become an Art teacher. I believe that becoming a teacher is my "calling" and through this I have developed a sense of myself as an individual. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing in 2005 and have had a desire to become a teacher since. I recently learned that the time is NOW and that I need to go after what I desire, which is why I chose to go back to school. Above all of the knowledge that I have gained since going to school, the most important thing I gained from my college experience is a love for other people and a desire to teach what I know.

Amanda

I have recentlly just enrolled in an adult accelerated program at Benedictine University. I feel that college is an important step that I did not take when I graduated high school. I know that by going back to college, I will be able to increase my growth potential and advance in my career. This is valuable to me, as without a degree, I would not be able to realize my full potential. Continuing my education is a big step, and one that I hope will allow me to move forward in the working field.

Chelsea

My college experience has definitely been one of a learing experience. I have learned a lot about myself and about others by living in close proximity with so many people at one time. I have experienced that you can't always take people at face value and there is so much underneath a person's surface, including myself. Living with someone has been such an awakening for me, as I'm sure it has for many people, because you never fully know a person until you live with them. People change in the blink of an eye, and you have to be prepared to deal with it. Learning about people and yourself are the best life lessons because it can really enhance your character. The college experience has a value that nothing else can compare to. It is your first time living without family where you learn how to really take care of yourself and put yourself first. I value my college experience, with all its good and bad above any of my other experiences because it shows who a person truly is, including myself. There is nothing better than knowing who you are.

Krysten

So far, i have got a chance to meet so many great people. I can honestly say that I am learning something and do feel smarter everyday. College has given me the chance to live on my own and create my own independence. I feel as though college is going to better my future in so many ways. It is important to me that I can be financially stable and be able to someday provide my children with a better life than I had. Education is important to me and I hope that by attending college, it will pay off and I will have a great life as an Occupational Therapist.

Brittany

I have gotten a great and valuable education. I have gotten real world experience and a helpful and valuable base education for my job.

Hong

Through my experiences in college there are many valuable lessons that I have learned. I learned that it is NEVER late to start studying. No matter who you were before college, you just have to prove it to professors and faculty members that you can change. It may take harder work than other people who have always tried hard in school but it is never late for those who haven't because long as you can show that you are trying and you're not willng to give up, college gives you that second chance. I made my regrets and mistakes in highschool and I am able to redirect and learn from those mistakes and use those lessons in college. I think this has been the valuable lesson I have learned in my life, and probably one of the valuable lesson that I will forever cherish and use. So far, I have done nothing but prove to myself, my parents and my professors that this is all true.

Hannah

I have learned through my college experience that it is important to be yourself and to push yourself outside of your comfort zone so that you continue to learn. Other people have lessons to teach you and they don't even know it. Different situations will expose you to the knowledge that will prepare you for the real world. It has been valuable to attend college so that I learned this and so that I could figure out who I am. It is important to see people from all walks of life so as to better put yourself in perspective. I learned there is so much more to the wolrd than just me and my life.

Nathan

By deciding to attend this 9 month culinary school, Arizona Culinary Institute, I have learned many things. The fact that it is an accelerated program, so much information and learning happens in a short period of time. It is going to be extremely valuable to my career and life by attending this school. I hope to take my knowledge that I learn from this school and open my own restaurant and hotel with my twin brother. Also, being 2,000 miles away from my family and going to college is giving me a chance to live my own life as a college student and it is teaching me to be independent and responsible.

Gyoo

I have learned a lot regarding my major and have made many networking connections.

Samantha

College has completely changed me for the better. Before I went to college, I was very dependent on my parents and my friends from home, I was scared to try new things, and I was the shy and quiet girl from my high school. Now, I have broken out of my shell and become an extremely independent, out-going and confident woman. I am studying abroad in Italy in the Spring, something I would have never done before college, and I have an excellent marketing internship which has taught me valuable skills for my future in the business world. My college experience has not only taught me valuable lessons and education that I will need in the workplace, but has taught me how to break out of my comfort zone by meeting new friends, trying new things, and feeling like I could conquer the world if I put my mind to it. I feel that by attending college, I have blossomed into a mature adult and I know that I am completely 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} prepared for anything after this amazing four year experience.

Apart from a great group of close friends, and a wonderful Ultimate Frisbee team that I am more than proud to call myself the captain of, my time at the University of New Hampshire has shown me that I can meet any challenge head on. I can excel under pressure, and when the time calls for it, I am more than confident in my ability to get the job done for myself and those who might be counting on me. The experiences gained from attending this university are the foundation for my life, and I will continue to build upon this foundation even after my time here has ended.

Raneem

Senior year. It's supposed to be the highlight of high school, the year where you go to prom, and let your past three years of hard work get you into college. Most students cherish this time; I skipped it. I chose not to spend an extra year learning the same things with the same people; I knew there was so much more to learn out there than my small school could teach me. Now, as a community college student much younger than the rest, I have taken an early step in discovering the diversity that I heard about in America but never got to see. I have learned about subjects that were never even mentioned in my three years of high school, and have learned that there are so many more options for my future. In addition, I have learned more about the problem going on in the world, and how much it needs to the help of my generation to fix it and make a better future for all of us. Going to college has given me the motivation to become someone who can give back to what created my in the first place: the world.

maribell

I have gotten experience in the field that I would like to be in.

The faculty at my undergraduate alma mater changed my life. They helped shape my foundation for which I have grown as a musician and composer. I also grew as an adult while I was an undergraduate, learning not to sweat the small stuff that would have tortured me as a teenager. College for me was more than just an academic experience, but a life learning experience.

Sarah

During my first semester of college I have grown not only academically but also as a person. I have found comfort in being myself, and my confidence has grown tremendously. I have also gained an improved work ethic and become a more disciplined worker.

Rachel

First and foremost, my daughter is the number one thing I have gotten out of my college experience. From an educational standpoint, going to culinary school has taught me so many necessary techniques and people skills that I might not have learned elsewhere. The tools that I now have to perform my job, I have the most confidence in. This, in my mind, is one of the things that makes a great employee, and hopefully someday a great employer. Although going to culinary school has put me back in the financial department, in time what I have learned will definately pay off. I have no doubt about that.

Caitlin

I have learned so many things not just about education, but about life. I've made great friends, and I love the people that attend my school. I've learned how to grow up and I've loved every second of it.

Meghan

I was unsure which direction to go in after I graduated. It was expected of me to head off to college based on my successes in high school, but I wasn't fully sure that I wanted to continue straight into more academics. I had wanted to learn more about what a book couldn't offer, what life was really about, before I headed off by myself, adhering to a major and a set of requirements that would set the tone to my professional life. Freshman year of college was a hard transition due to the constant mental struggle of why I had followed the expected path put before me and why I hadn't explored more options when I had the chance. Only a year later, I am so grateful of my choice. I am at a university that has so many options and resources. I am surrounded by knowledge that is going to help me form a career path that I enjoy. Also, and most importantly, I have grown up. It has been so valuable to attend a school that does not "hold your hand" but instead, allows the student to make the effort and mature.

Jennifer

College is the foundation for a future career. It is best to take advantage of as many opportunites college has to provide. Education is the main reason I am at college. The educational opportunities I have sought out include being in the Rising Scholars Program and the McNair Program. As a part of the Rising Scholars Program, they expect the participant to maintain at least a 2.5 g.p.a. They also require mandatory meetings that discuss time management, study skills, financial literacy, and other useful knowlege. This program has helped me concentrate on my education and learn skills to help me succeed. The McNair Program provides support for research and graduate schools. They require the students to maintain at least a 3.0 g.p.a and complete a year of research with a school faculty member. This opportunity will assist me in learning the most during my undergraduate degree and prepare me for my graduate degree. Being a first generation college student has hindered my ability to know the best processes to take while at college, but these programs substitute for this. Taking advantage of what college has to offer will lead me to success.

Nikki

I have been learning how to be independent. and self disciplined. It is very valuable because I will go further in life if I learn how to be organized and self motivated
