Last year I lived in towers (a freshman dorm) and it was pretty tough to get work done in my room. Still, I like working in my room best so I'd put on headphones and listen to white noise to block out noise and do work there. This year my dorm is pretty quiet so I have no problem doing work there.
As for other options, the Hillman library is popular, as is the cathedral of learning. Kids will also do work in academic buildings where there are tables and benches (Benedum (engineering), Chevron (chemistry), Posvar/David Lawrence (lecture halls)). I also see a good amount of kids doing work at the dining halls, mostly at market central. Some dorms have lounges and quiet study rooms, and kids will do work there.
