University of Rhode Island Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Tracey

Most of my friends are athletes because athletes usually hang out with eachother due to our similar schedules. I also am friends with students in my classes now that I am a junior because every class I take are with the same people. I feel that at URI you have to get involved with some sort of organization to find your place in the university. I usually wear jeans and a sweatshirt to class, which is what most people where. Most students are from the New England area, but I am from Florida and have friends from Minnesota and California so there's a large mix.

Drew

Primarily democratic. Open-minded. Racially diverse, and I would guess that the average student is from the lower middle class. I can't say that any particular type of student would feel out of place here. There are several handicapped people on campus, and they seem to have minimal trouble getting around, and they are friendly with and well-known by an extremely large number of students.

Dylan

The majority of the students are beautiful women from R.I., Mass, New Jersey, New York and beyond. The out of staters are usually spoiled stoned rich kids but they're allright and most either straighten out or drop out. It can be a fashion show in class. The guys try to dress there best and the girls usually try to be as sexy as possible. Different types of students interact if they live in a dorm together or they work together in groups in classes. Most of the students are spoiled rich out of staters. The rest are like me, don't come from much but trying to prove myself here and get the opportunity to acquire a nice life. Most of the younger students aren't very politcally aware because they wear Che Guvera T-Shirts and don't know who he is. But if you take a couple poly-sci classes you'll learn all about politics. The students who know a little about politics typically lean to the left. Some students do talk about how much they will earn someday. Especially the students who came here with no money and dream of having enough to fullfill they're dreams.

Alex

Most students keep to themselves and hang out with their on clique. Most people are URI are middle class white Americans, but I've yet to have a racial experience. Everyone is pretty much cool on a interpersonal level. Its once you get to know people that some might be worse that others. When people party, its usually the same social class that parties with one another.

Julie

We have a very well rounded student body. I have friends of all races and religions. There is a club or organization for just about every racial or religious background so everybody fits in. Economically students are all over, some are wealthy while others are not, but that does not play an important role among the students. Politically, more students are democrats and being a republican myself that gets a little annoying, but i just know not to bring up anything political. Most of the students have a very laid back "surfer" attitude; beach clothes and flip flops are worn daily.

Caroline

If you dont like to party, dont go to URI. It is very difficult to find other students who dont like to party which is something I encountered...However, URI is great for sports, the beach, friendly interactions. It is very easy to meet people especially in your first year because everyone is excited for their first year at college. Everyone dresses comfortably and you never feel like you are being judged for what you look like or what you are interested in... differences are definately appreciated. URI encourages diversity a lot which is part of what makes the campus so comfortable. Everyone comes from different financial backgrounds. I never even found it an issue. I have no idea whether my closest friends there were rich or poor... it really doesnt make a difference at URI. Pretty much everyone is from Rhode Island but there are a lot of people from New Jersey and Massachusetts as well. Things such as politics and money arent discussed much at URI which I found nice because students are focused on their aspirations and living in the current moment to learn rather than trying to please people. Voting is definately encouraged though and the importance of government is noticed it just isnt really common in general conversation.

Samantha

The student body is diverse, but it's also large, so it's easy to feel very alone if you don't find your niche.

Gina

There are many clubs and groups on campus that accomodate a variety of backgrounds and cultures. There is something for everyone, you just have to find out where you fit in. Many URI students are from RI, NY or NJ.

Brenden

URI is actually very similar to my hometown in that there is a majority white population in a very suburban area, with most of the people being from a middle to high part of the middle class.

Lorie

URI is predominately white students. There is a population of minorities but, not very many. Everyone is nice to everyone, I have seen no fights and no major racism. Everyone seems to get along.

Morgan

i feel like there is a definite racial barrier at uri, it's very noticeable to me. it seems that minorities tend to stick together and also the majority tend to stick together. i do not see a lot of interaction between them-and i find that to be very unfortunate. most students you'll meet are from RI but a lot from NY, NJ, and MA. there are quite a bit from CT as well. you'll find many many girls wearing ugg boots, northface jackets and tight leggings in the winter (well that might be out of style by next winter but who knows) a lot of people dress alike, you see tons of people w/ their greek letters on all the time, there's a very big and active greek system at URI, there seems to be something for everyone w/ fraternities/sororities.

David

It's not incredibly diverse. I could do without the jersey trash, too.

Kelly

read the notes in the above ones

Casey

URI does not have a very diverse student body. I am a 21 year old caucasian male from a predominantly white town, and URI's student body is pretty reflective at home. Having said that, I have had the opportunity to work with international excahnge students from the pacific rim within the College of Business Administration, and I have found this to be one of the most rewarding experiences this school has had to offer. URI is predominantly left-wing, and there are many student groups present on campus. One of the most unique and effective is the GLBT center, which acts as a safe area for gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered students. We also have one of the best Women's Centers in the country. There, peer advocates counsel and assist female victims through the grieving and legal process.

Sara

It's not very nice, but a lot of the students of different race are in the special program that helps students, and gives them a second chance from highschool. I don't know what it's called, but they didn't do very well on SAT's, and highschool, but they are still given the same oppertunities as someone who did do well. The engineering major is not diverse at all, mostly white or asian. Students have no problem interacting with different races, different races aren't very common, in my field. Most students are very liberal here, it is RHode Island, whcih is a liberal state.

Chris

From everywhere. Lots of fun.

Angry

Students at URI are full of themselves. Half of them are driving massive SUVs paid for with "daddy's money". The other half spend their days prancing around in earthday/concert tee-shirts and preaching world peace. I feel like the greater part of campus is made up of the rich socialites who are only going to college to find a husband, OR are going to college to party and get laid. The other prevalent majority waste their time preaching their political views to anyone that is stupid enough to give them more then 2 seconds of their attention span.

Leta

They do have many clubs that sounds interesting but I would like it to be more variety.

Phil

URI SCHOOL SPIRIT! GOOO RHODY! Good Joke! One of the drawbacks of a dry campus. The student body has no motivation to go alot of the sporting events because of this. No beer sold at games, no tailgating, and dickhead event staff backed by anal cops 20ft away. URI is a diverse collection of students. Mostly from the New England area, New York, New Jersey (in a big way), and Pennsylvania. I live in Illinois, I can't explain that one. Out of state kids usually have money, and the Rhode Island students, like the state of Rhode Island itself, are usually poor. You have the jocks, the has-been highschool jocks, the partiers, the studious, the stoners, the homesick, the hard-core and joke greeks, and the just plain confused. The student body is mostly moderate with kids on the left and the right.

Michelle

its sweet. I wish that at basketball games, there would be more student seats lower. and i wish there was more advertisement for sprots games. I never knew when any of the games were!

Dawson

Lots of athletic people....everywhere!

andy

sucks

Maria

The student body at URI is very liberal. There is a group on campus for pretty much everyone. Many of the students are there on scholarship while others are struggling to get by. A large number of the students are paying their own way through college. Students usually dress very comfortably to class. If it's an early class, expect to see someone with pajama pants on. If a student at URI has to get up at 7 for an 8:00 class and walk up the hill, they usually don't put much effort into "looking good." From what I have seen, most students are more focused on thier passions rather than how much money they will make. Then again, someone in the business program may answer differently.

Chris

I am not yet so familiar and exposed to the way of life in USA in order to give a clear opinion for this.

Michelle

There is a really diverse student body. It's so easy to meet people and make friends. When I went, I immediately became friends with my roommates and we're still friends today. We left our door open and made other friends from people just peeking into our room. There are clubs and organizations for pretty much any style of life and one great thing is that you can create you own club if we don't have something that you want. I have friends from so many different groups. One fun thing is going to the dining hall. You'll see so many people you know and make new friends from sitting with friends. It's so easy!

Emmerson

The URI campus pretty much reflects the country racially. Its mostly white and has a much smaller minority population. There are many different groups on campus. There are a lot of organizations fighting causes, many of which are race related, however do not discriminate against anyone outside the race. There is a LGBT group. I don't think anyone would feel out of place at the school. There is such a variety of people there. There's someone for everyone to get along with.

Sarah

There are people from all backgrounds here however a great deal of the people are from other states like New Jersey and New York. A large population of super tan bimbos go here. A super smart kid that doesn't drink may feel out of place. There are a ton of kids with beemers and Mercedes Etc. here. Many students are not politically aware or active.

Devin

they are sweet.

Cameron

Okay, I don't really socialize with URI students, since I'm a local and never lived on campus. I also work full-time to support myself, so I don't really have time to socialize, let alone willingly socialize with URI students, sorry.

Jamie

I don't like the amount of entitled rich tri-state area students that attend URI

Kelly

URI is very diverse and you will expericence a bit of everything going to school there. I think all students fit in with the URI community. Typically students where sweat-shirts and jeans, very casual. Most URI students are from RI, NY, MA, NJ and CT. Typically middle class is what goes to URI. Students are very politically aware.

Dylan

There is alot of division, and cliches. Also, this has to be the number 1 campus ever to have so many fashion-conscious people! Who cares if they're Uggs or Emus??? Financial backgrounds are various, so that doesn't really matter. Everyone is generally accepted somewhere.

Shelby

Our school is really big on diversity. We have a whole week dedicated to it. As part of graduation requirments we have to take a diversity related class. Honestly I think URI does an amazing job of making everyone feel welcome. To class you will see girls dressed up all intense to me who loves pjs to wear. Everything is accepted. If you want to go to class all dressed up and get all the boys attentions, thats fine. But if you want that A you better ignore the boys oggling at you and pay attention to the teacher Students interact with everyone. Alot of people think that going to a state school means tons of instate clicks... URI isnt like that at all. 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students are from out of state. In my hallway, all the girls except 5 are from RI. and of all those students only one room knew each other before coming to URI. At a table in Hope or the Butt I would expect to see anyone sitting together. Especially around 7pm cause all the tables are full and sometimes you have to sit with complete strangers yeah... more lazy... there isnt alot of political stuff around here. One day last year we did have that jesus guy on the quad with his sign. Most people just looked and walked by

Tricia

I've never really had a problem with any of that but I know that there are many clubs and groups geared towards those groups that you can join and learn more about. I don't think that any kind of student would feel out of place here, you may have to go out of your comfort zone to find similar people just because the school is so big, which is why there is a high transfer percentage in the freshman classes. A lot of students wear sweats/leggings to class. If you asked any of the guys at our school they would say the girls have the 'jersey girl' style with Uggs, leggings, and big sunglasses...I disagree. I am from Jersey and the only place I see people wearing those kinds of clothes is here. There is a lot of interaction in classes so everyone has to interact at some point, but mostly it seems that everyone is open to each other. It is not like high school in the dining hall, people are never there at the same time so I can't describe who is always sitting where, it is just groups of friends sitting together. One night I will be sitting with the cheerleaders, but then I can sit with my friends who are in Sororities or people who aren't involved with anything, then people who were in my dorm freshman year...it all differs. Most URI students are from Rhode Island, New Jersey, Mass, Long Island or Connecticut. If you are in state it is pretty affordable to go here, although in state rates are suppose to go up this year. Out of state it is pretty expensive so out of state students are usually upper middle class or on scholarship.

Tim

URI is a really gay-friendly campus. Most of the student body leans towards liberal, so everyone's pretty chill. There's even a GLBT portion of one of the dorms. Students come from all different backgrounds. Some are kids from Providence with barely enough to get by, others are from Connecticut old money and drive around campus in their Escalades. Get ready to see it all.

Neil

Through diversity week and on-going programming we are aware and have fun with our diverse groups. Participation has led to much more understanding of each other. I can not imagine anyone being out of place unless they were a complete pessimist about everything. Lots of students dress up nice for class, but still some dress down comfortable. It comes down to a personal preference. The four tables at a dining hall would be pushed together and everybody would be talking. Different types of students interact all the time. Diversity is accepted and participated in consistently. URI students are generally from the northeast. Financial backgrounds vary, but no one really asks. People come from different situations and that is it. Students can not stop talking about the upcoming election. They know who is running and what their stances are. The campus is a bit liberal, but the the conservatives are definitely present. It makes it fun and adds to the political debates. People don't talk about how much they will earn.
