University of St Thomas-Saint Paul Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Zach

It's a suitcase college and there isn't very much to do on the weekends.

Sophia

Parking is very strict around St Thomas, and parking services was not the greatest at helping me figure everything out. If you're going to get a parking permit, make sure you're not getting overcharged, and make sure you know which lot(s) your permit is for. If you park in a lot that your permit does not apply for, even briefly, you WILL get a parking violation. $40 for only a few minutes of being parked is not worth it.

Katherine

The majority of the people you meet are from Minnesota and almost everyone is from the midwest. There is not a lot of diversity here.

Rachel

We don't have the "big school" atmosphere at football games and other events.

Lee

Parking. I commute right now, and the closest parking is 5 blocks away, since people park their cars overnight on the streets where there is free parking next to the school. I have no chance at those parking spots, and I am there at 7 a.m.

Kevin

The worts thing about the University of St. Thomas is the high level of tuition that needs to be paid. This high level of payment will lead to students having a larger amount of debt when they graduate.

Taylor

Hardly anything to do on campus during the weekends and the hours that certain facilities/food places are open

Lauren

I condisder the worst thing about my school to be the lack of greek life. I wish there was a sorority on campus!

Callie

I dont consider anything really bad about the university of St. Thomas. Their teaching style is unique and challenging but thats what makes for a good school. I am at college to learn and achieve the knowledge for my future. The only downside would be the cost. Its alot of money to go their but I keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end when i have that excellent degree in my hand and the intillect in the business world.

Kimngan

The amount of credits one can transfer in is limited.

Carrie

The part about the University of St. Thomas that I appreciate the least is the cost. My family and I are struggling as it is in this economy and adding the stress of a large tuition makes it even more difficult. There are many benefits that come with the sacrifice of the bill but overall I would have to admit that it makes the experience less enjoyable.

Tristan

The University of St. Thomas is a great school, but the worst thing about the school is the high tuition costs. As college student we are struggling with stress about finance and the high tuition costs are the leading cause to this stress. Many students have to find a job while they are in school, because they can't afford the high cost associated with college. Since students are working while in school it causes stress on their academics. Overall, if St. Thomas lower their cost of tuition it would be beneficial in reducing financial stress in their students.

Mackenzie

The worst thing about the school is the lack of diversity. It definitely has its own stereotype. The typical student is white and from the private schools around the St. Paul area. I am an out-of-state student so this was an obstacle for me, but once I overcame it I was very satisfied with every aspect of the school.

Nicolas

I would say the extreme tuition.

Sarah

The amount of drinking that occurs. I was really surprised and disappointed to find out how much drinking occurs. There is a lot of underage drinking too. Public Saftey catches some of it, but it is very prevelant. I feel excluded sometimes because I do not drink. Most kids talk about parties and how wasted they were. The drinking is not just on the weekends. Parties start Thursday night, sometimes even Wednesdays. It's one things that really disappoints me about St. Thomas and my peers.

Madeline

I don't like the food very much, but it's not terrible. The cost to attend St. Thomas is quite high, so you need lots of financial aid.

Brittany

It gets really cold in minnesota and snows a lot so its not something about the school but just about the region in general.

Greta

In my opinion the worst thing about my school is the lack of art courses. It has a great music program, however, no hands on art classes are available (for example pottery, painting, drawing, etc.). It's nice to have a hands on class such as one of these to mix up a difficult schedule.

Ryan

The food is pretty bad sometimes. Hopefully the new student center fixes that. Also they dorm that I am in is very small and an inconvenience to living basically. Try not to be in Ireland hall. Or Cretin for that matter

Maggie

The food at St. Thomas is absolutely pitiful. We have to go to another campus in Minneapolis just to get decent, healthy food. This is being changed though, so the next worst thing would have to be some of the teachers. My professors do not care what happens and grade upon favorites and not how we actually do in class. I do not believe that my grades reflect how to do, just how much I suck up to my professor.

Kelvin

The worst thing about this school is the lack of diversity. Most people come from a very similar background; white, upper-middle class. There is a shortage of diversity among the backgrounds of the students. The backgrounds of the students and their experiences are what contribute most to the atmosphere of the campus. The conversations that happen in the classrooms, cafeterias, outside school buildings are all informed by this collective background that most people share. The homogeneity that I have been describing leads to some students feeling isolated.

Tim

The small amount of students. I enjoy meeting new people and I see the same people everyday.

Erika

Some students are too materialistic. This seems to be decreasing as the amount of students studying abroad increases.

Patrick

The cost: it is an expesive school.

Brittany

I can't think of anything I dislike about this school.

Elizabeth

The lack of on campus restaraunts with affordable prices. I find myself wanting to go off-campus to get something to eat, which is time consuming, and also pricey.

Connor

The worst thing about St. Thomas would have to be the fact that there are so many beautiful girls that it sometimes makes it hard to concentrate. Honestly some of the most beautiful women in college flock to UST for reason that I am not aware. All jokes aside, however, it is a wonderful place to study, it has a fantastic library with 6 levels, each one gets consecutivly quiter as you go up. This makes it a much easier find a spot with the volume level you prefer.

Rachel

The worst thing about St. Thomas is that there are too many extra curricular activities to chose from. It can be overwhelming to decide what if anythign to be involved in.

Gemma

It is very expensive. Tuition costs a lot, and financial aid isn't the greatest. It is also somewhat difficult to find on-campus jobs.

Jack

The University of St. Thomas is relatively expensive. It is a great school all-around so to get the best education you must pay for it.

Gina

I consider the worst thing about my school to be the cost, but they make it worth cost once you begin and start getting involved.

Lauren

There are many students that party. They don't tend to party on campus--they go off, but you still get the vibe that there are people who are only concerned with getting drunk.

Tommy

The worst thing about St. Thomas is the very steep price to attend.

Henry

Parking at times can be very difficult, especially for visitors. Being in an urban setting, it is understandable, but the school does the best that it can with the resources given. They continually seek to improve the parking situation on and around campus.

Linda

Being a transfer student from a different state, California, I found that the culture of St. Thomas very different. Having completed my first semester, I would have to say that the worst thing about St. Thomas is absolutely nothing. I love the campus and I admire the professors who are all so eager to help and actually teach the course material. Everyone is so open making the tansistion as a transfer student easy.

Jessica

The worst part of St. Thomas is that the university is know as a suitcase school, meaning many people go home on the weekends. This happens since a large portion of the students live near the Twin Cities. Sometimes on weekends students can feel lonely, yet student-run-programs do a good job of trying to help this problem by running fun activies for stdents on the weekends.

Tom

That things look very appealing but , I have found, that the support to back up these looks is sometimes disappointing.

Grace

I think the people that are privileged and ungrateful for what they have are the worst thing at school. St. Thomas has many wealthy students that are sometimes unaware of their surrounding community. They are largely unaware of the problems in the world and lack the motivation to learn about those problems. Many will undoubtedly be "sucessful" but will go through life living mostly for themselves.

Ashley

Though I do not have a lot to complain about, I believe that it is difficult as a student to find the help i need. More specifically, I am considering pursuing business marketing as my major, but my advisor had no input or any helpful information about the classes I should start taking or even the people I should seek out.

Elizabeth

The worst thing about my school would be some of the students that attend. St. Thomas is known for being somewhat of a "rich" school, and that stigma gets carried over to those of us who are not attending college on our parents' dime. I work hard to be able to afford this education, and it's definitely frustrating to see so many students that don't put the effort in, mostly because they know Mom and Dad will pick up the tab if they don't pass a class. It lowers the competitive edge in most classes.

Jessica

The only issue I have, is that it is somewhat expensive, so I've had to commute from home instead of living in a dorm. It's completely worth it though.

Steve

The worst thing about this school would have to be the transferring process. I have a lot classes that I took at my previous school, which was also a private liberal arts college, and some of the classes wouldn't transfer even though I thought they were the same class. It's pretty upsetting that I have to take the same, or very similar class, that I have already taken and spend thousands of dollars to learn the same things that I already have.

lucas

The only really bad thing i can think of is the price to attend a private school, but it is very much worth it in the short amount of time i've been there.

Allison

It's very expensive which is a turn off at times but it pays off because the quiality of education is unbelieveable!

Nyssa

Too-strict rules about underaged drinking. I feel that school officials are out to punish students instead of what they should be doing, which is ensure their safety. Charging students large amounts of money would not change their destructive behavior. Also, one of the worst things about St. Thomas is having to take core classes such as Theology and Philosophy in order to graduate. We're paying for these classes. Shouldn't we be able to opt out if Theology and Philosophy are not our interests? Three semesters of Theology is too much.

judith

The University of St. Thomas seems to lack the diversity that you would find while attending a public school. This lack of diversity can hinder the growth of students, during a time where growth should be limitless. One of the factors of the lack of diversity , I am sure is the cost of tuition when compared to the cost of tuition at a public institution, I feel almost positive that I am one of very few students who is self supporting and considered a non traditional student.

Andrew

Having to walk across campus in the winter time. It's freezing and they don't have very many underground tunnels.

Abigail

The worst thing is the stereotype that everyone that goes to St. Thomas is wealthy. I personally know that this statement is definitely not true.

Ruth

Campus is relatively dead on weekends. A lot of people go home and the rest go to parties. So you have to go off campus to find most weekend entertainment.

Victoria

Nothing really fully disapoints me about UST. If anything a better selection of food in the cafe.
