Virginia Commonwealth University Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Toby

That we're all unwashed art students, or if you're in any other major you're an underachiever since VCU accepts almost everyone who applies.

Tate

VCU students are depicted to be only art students because we have such a wonderful program. I think people may also think that we are a party school. As far as VCU itself, I think people think of crime when they think of Richmond and VCU may be associated with that as well. Another one is anyone can get into VCU.

Hunter

Some stereotypes about VCU is that it is in the ghetto and a very unsafe school. A stereotype about VCU students is that they are all artsy and emo.

Robert

The stereotype is that the school is big on arts and medicine. Not necessarily known for its wild style, but the surrounding area of richmond often has that conception. Everyone thinks its such a dangerous place to go to school.

Liz

We are "ghetto".

Mel

That VCU is dangerous and in the ghetto. Although it is a city campus I have never felt seriously in danger. Also there is a stereotype that the students are not hard workers, that VCU is easy to get into and easy to get good grades. In the art program the workload is intense and it is difficult to get Bs.

Allie

Many people believe that in order to go to VCU, one must be an art student. This is not the case! I have never taken an art class and have found VCU to be an extremely positive experience.

Jesse

I think the general stereotype about VCU students is that we're not as smart as, say, our peers at UVA or Tech. I think that VCU used to be a lot easier to get into. So our stereotype may be that we're slackers... Another stereotype about VCU is that it's in a filthy city and that it's unsafe. This definitely isn't true. The fan is lovely and there are certain city rules to abide by, but other than that I have had no problems with safety.

Erin

That every person who goes to VCU is an artistic person, that VCU is in a horrible part of town and walking outside everyday is a danger.

Shannon

VCU has the stereotype of being in the "ghetto" and having a lot of crime... and ever since Taylor Biehl was murdered, people assume that this happens normally.

KJ

I think VCU is typically under rated because people don't think its a very well known school and that it is only for "art freaks". Some people also have misconceptions about the safety of Richmond and think that there is a lot of crime and everyone is getting murdered everywhere.

Shannon

all smokers & heavy drinkers rich really smart

Cody

Although VCU is one of the most diverse schools in Virginia, many of the diverse people seem to stick within their group.

Harper

Some sterotypes about VCU is that it isn't a very competitive institution and that its campus is unsafe. Sterotypes attached to VCU students is that there are a lot of artsy, tattooed students and a lot of foreign students.

Tristan

Stereotypes about VCU are mainly that it's ghetto and that people get mugged daily.

Alysse
