What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Alexandria

Since I play field hockey at my school, it has taught me to be responsible of all my work. I've improved my time management. I feel since playing my sport it has made me a better person. It keeps me from making poor decisions and keeps me out of trouble. My team is like my family, without them I have no idea how I would have gotten through stressful mid term weeks or final weeks. VWC is a small college but it has helped because I can get the help that I need when I'm struggling.

After completing almost two years of college, my experience has been one that is diverse and worthwhile. I have learned to stand strong in my identity as an individual and to not become swayed by the many different opinions and ideals that come with a college campus. I have gained many close friends that I am sure will remain lasting and quality relationships throughout the rest of my life. The education I have received has been valuable for my future career and I have established good relationships with my professors that may prove to be helpful later on in my life as I consider job opportunities and graduation. My sports experience as a student athlete has taught me how to manage my time and be responsible and disciplined, even when I may not want to be.. I have faced challenges and difficulties and overcome them, gaining perseverance and strength from these experiences. Overall, my college experience has been awesome and I have enjoyed the last two years immensely and feel that the remaining years here at school will even further prepare me for my career and rest of my life!

The most important thing I have received from my time at VWC so far is the passion for life and the passion of knowledge. I have realized how important it is to expand our knowledge and to understand all that we can while we are able to. We have been given the great gift of life, and should not waste it. We should learn all that we can because if we don't then we are bound to repeat the mistakes of the ones that came before us.

College has made me realize how excited I am to enter into the real world. It has given me a great sense of independence that I believe has allowed me to thrive on my own and gain confidence in knowing that I can be successful in the future because I have gained the skills and knowledge that will allow me to do so. Things have certainly not always been easy in college. However, it is the difficult times and tasks that I have overcome that have allowed me to grown into my own person. Because I have learned so much about not just academics, but about life in general, my college experience has been invaluable to me. I am looking forward ot applying the lessons that I have learned in college and thriving because of the experience gained through my college experience.

Courtney

What I have gotten out of my college experience is alot of knowledge that I can take with me not only in school, but in my everyday life. For example, one of the classes I took was an ethics class and it not only taught me about things in the classroom, but how I can apply it to my home life and work life. College has been valuable for me to attend because I have come a long way and have overcome many obstacles to obtain a degree. For example, I started college in 2000 at a different university, but in the midst of that I soon after got married, had a child, gotten divorced, and have undergone 7 eye surgeries because I found out that my vision was bad and my eyesight was 20/400. Overall, to me it is valuable because I can lead by example to many people that no matter what you go through you can stive to achieve a higher education and be successful at obtaining a degree. That is what i have gotten from my college experience and why it is valuable to me.

As a student at VWC I feel that a good way to describe my school would be to call it a hit-or-miss school. By this I mean that students either love it or hate it. Personally I love it! This does not mean that my school is perfect by any means, and there has been a great deal of disappointment and frustration, but nothing too dramatic to turn me away from the incredible lifestyle I now have through my school. I feel as though I have learned more about myself in the last 2 1/5 years than I did in the 18 years of my life before entering college. Being a Recreation and Leisure major has opened my eyes to a new style of academics. I actually ENJOY and LOOK FORWARD to going to my classes! I am able to apply the information that I am learning to real life events and scenarios that I find myself in. That feeling of being able to apply myself is one of the most rewarding benefits I have ever gained from an education. I know the friends I make and lesson I learn will be life long thanks to VWC.

What I have gotten most out of my college experience is the feeling of comfort. From the moment I stepped on campus, everyone was so warm and welcoming and it was all so surreal. It was a joy to see how much everyone at school cares about you and help you succeed in the best ways possible. It has been a value for me to attend Virginia Wesleyan College because I do not believe that any of the other colleges I have applied to would treat me in such a great way as this school does. Comfort is the most important value when it comes to attending a school, and this school has greatly emphasized this value on me from the moment I started my education.

The classes I have taken at Virginia Wesleyan have developed and influenced the way in which I view the world and what defines success. Having taken mostly religious studies and sociology classes truly helped me become a better person. I learned life lessons in these classes; the way I want to treat those around me, the way I want to act on a daily basis, and the way I want to enjoy and appreciate life. This newfound knowledge of myself and the person I want to become are important factors in my life. Learning lessons such as appreciating life from G.K. Chesterton’s childlike perspective are the most important lessons I have learned from my classroom experiences. Furthermore, not only have I been influenced by classes, professors, and classmates but I have been influenced by teammates and friends as well. Had I not chosen to attend Virginia Wesleyan I would not have discovered the people with whom I interact on daily basis. These people have each taught me a lesson that helped me change and grow. Overall, Virginia Wesleyan College has been an influential, self-fulfilling choice for me.

Making the decision to attend college has been the most important decision of my adult life. Initially, I enrolled to obtain a degree that would allow me to pursue higher-paying employment in the legal field, as I had worked as a paralegal for many years. Since becoming a student, I have realized certain things about myself, such as my innate teaching skills, that have caused me to consider pursuing a more specific degree that will allow for a more broad range of career options. In short, I no longer have to be resigned to a particular job or field because it’s what I’ve always done. A bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and applied writing will allow me to continue writing, and teach that craft to future generations. I hope to teach English in a community college.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the past one and a half years at Virginia Wesleyan. I have excelled more than I ever expected. I have grown and matured more than I could have imagined. My first year of college I never did anything but go to class, clubs, and school work. Then I got married over the summer. Everything got much harder. I have two jobs and work extra if I can just to pay the bills. I still go to school fulltime. I clean up after my husband and keep up with my home. I still get good grades and study in all of my free time. I love where I have moved in my life, I am happy with who I have become. I will become a great teacher and I will make school exciting for my students. I am excited about the rest of my college career and my career as a teacher.

Many things one can get out of a college experience: learning to appreciate things that are diffferent, to listen and communicate as a leader on campus, and also understand what it is really like to live in a community. This things I would have probably not had the opportunity to walk away with if I were at a large University. The fact that it is a small college makes it hard for people to get into exclusive groups such as the student programming board. The skills that I learned in class allowed me to come out of my shell and take the chance. Students at the college are from all sorts of backgrounds and are very acceptingto each other which makes the whole school a community that anyone would want to be part of. These things, I can take with me anywhere after graduation and be successful.

My college experience has not only helped me educationally but also athletically and socially. Going to a college where I knew practically no one, allowed me to rediscover how to make new friends and also how to find my true self. I am participating in sports in college which is a new a challenging level of competition for me and I love it. Finally, going to a small college has allowed me to really focus on my education. It is nice that my classes are small so I can work with my professors. This has allowed me to do exceptionally well in more difficult classes.

Francine

Classes very diverse... which puts an interesting twist in class to hear experiences of those adults who have more experience in the work place, and those who may not have even had a job yet. Teachers will work with their students at great length. It is obvious their focus is knowledge, and learning.. they treat each student like an individual and are always willing to help.

My college experience is one that I thought I would never complete. I work with students every day assisting them with college applications, testing, and scholarship searching and financial aid. My college experience has allowed me to not only impact my life and the lives of my immediate family but of the lives of high school students. Once completing my Associate's degree I did not keep going to finish; I married and found that I was stuck in an abusive/alcoholic relationship. I found that I could not even take care of myself; I left and reenrolled in college and was determined to finish so I could always take care of myself. I was happy that the college I had chosen was perfect for me and fit my needs. I was able to attend and work full time and still feel like part of a student body. The best thing I ever did was finish my education. I will be the first female in my family with a Master's degree and this scholarship would allow me to return to school in March to get started without alot of financial strain on my husband or myself and our kids.

My college experience has helped to help me grow not only as an individual, but also as a member of society. With the Liberal Arts nature of my college, I was exposed to various methods of thinking and theories of thought. I discovered my true passion for understanding life as we know it, and all of the people that surround me. Attending this college fostered my desire to question the world we live in, and to make it a better place. Although our society is not quick to embrace new methods of thought, my education has equipped me to begin examining how to not only better ourselves as people-- but also how to better our situation as a state, nation, and world. I believe that we have become so preoccupied to better our situations economically that we have lost our virtuous ambition and moral code of ethics that have gotten this nation to where it is today. Without fostering the need for a just and true way of life, we will have no place in our worlds future. Young adults should be exposed to all forms of thought and history to form their own ideas and unique place in life.

So far in my college experience I have learned a lot including some life skills that I learned in my life skills class. That class taught me so much such as time management and how to write a resume and cover letter. All my professors were very encouraging and pushed all of their students to succeed. I?ve really enjoyed my college experience so far and I plan to continue to succeed. The part that makes college so valuable to me is that I?m the first one in my family to college and I know it means a lot to my parents. I want to show them that I want to succeed and make my dreams come true. Another reason college is so valuable to me is because the career choice I want will save peoples life everyday.

My college experience so far has taught me how to do more things on my own. Before college, I was very much dependent on my mother for everything. Even though I did have a job in high school, I still depended on my mom for so much. When I started college, my mother was not there to do everything thing for me so I had to learn to do things on my own. I have learned so many skills that will follow me for the rest of my life. Also, it has taught me how to manage time. Procrastination was an issue for me before, but when I got into college I had to learn how to do things on a schedule to where I could things done in an acceptable amount of time.

If I could go back in time to see myself as a high school senior I would tell younger me to relax sometime, and that I was doing just fine with my grades and my college applications. I would tell myself that everything doesn't need to be perfect or rushed. Also I would tell myself to cherish the small things because those are the things you will remember better than the one time you got a C on an english paper. I would tell myself that life is short and to really enjoy the years I have. Also I would tell myself that college is great and its a lot more relaxing and fun. In conclusion I would tell myself to live the life I've been living and to enjoy every bit of school because once your out in the big world you can not go back to the easy high school and college life. And yes I do mean the easy college life, because from what I've heard adults say life out in the real world is hard and stressful. So take this time and enjoy life and enjoy friends and family.

Brittany

I would tell myself that even though I worked throughout high school , that I should have saved a little more and taken into consideration how much money it requires to go to a 4-year institution. Needing money is a big stressor, and the transition from high school to college would definitely been easier if stressors are minimized.

Elizabeth

If I could go back and give my senior self advice about this transition, I would tell myself to relax. Everything turns out the way it is supposed to. Don't worry so much about keeping your current friends that don't mean that much. Don't be scared to lose your boyfriend. College is full of new people and experiences just waiting for you. Don't be afraid of living in a dorm. Your best friend is going to love it and your going to wish you went to college sooner. Which leads to my next point: be glad you waited a year to go off to college. Now you know what you want because you took that year off. Finally, good luck!!

Off the top of my head, I can think of eight freshmen who recently got body piercings, three freshmen who have told me they have recently had a one night stand, several freshmen who have noticeably gained weight, and a few students who have dropped out. And I am simply a freshman attending a small private school. I can offer current high school students a plethora of advice related to college, but I am only going to point out one thing, the difference between high school and college, freedom. I feel like the difference is obvious, yet often overlooked and not discussed. So, the best advice I can offer prospective college students is just to think about your reason for attending college and to be careful. If you want to accomplish you?r life goals, you need to take care of yourself, and you need to be careful not to get carried away and expose yourself to sexually transmitted diseases, skip too many classes, or anything of that nature. While you are probably still thinking, ?I can?t wait to be part of that college life style,? just remember my advice and that every bad decision eventually has a consequence.

Breaking my leg was a horrible experience I will never forget. I was in so much pain that I had to go home, causing me to miss two weeks of classes. Trying to make up all of the work I had missed, and struggling to get around to my classes on crutches was not easy. But in retrospect, I am sure I chose the right college when I chose VWC. All of my professors were willing to help me, giving me the chance to make up the work I had missed. Having small class sizes at VWC became another advantage for me. I already knew many of the people in my classes and they were also willing to help me with class assignments. Walking around on crutches gave me a whole new perspective on life and what it means to be handicapped. Thankfully, our campus is small enought that making it to class on time was not too difficult to achieve. While manners seem to be slipping in our modern society, I was grateful that the students, professors and security officers at VWC were all willing to help me when I was struggling with doors, books, and lunch lines.

If I could go back I would tell myself to read more and to take another math class and also to never get or use that credit card. I would also be more involved with a lot of activities at school and apply for more scholarships. In short, I would just make sure that I would make this time not as hard as it has been on me. The stress from debt is overwhelming and I just wish i would have thought it through before getting to this point.

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, i would give my self more time to check out college. I really would've worked harder on completing scholarships, and really seeing what other schools theat were out there. Im not mad at my decision, but it would of been a easier ion school today if i would of known all the help that is out there. Also i would of completed my FAFSA earlier so i could've recieved better assistance with school. And also studying more schools history and know what the had to offer me. Lastly, worked harder on my GPA and listened to my counselors about the definition of a "Starving Student".

Spring 2009 Scared Senior Wow, college life will be so new that I am scared to death to begin in the fall. I will leave the comfortable halls of my high school and enter the new halls that will take me to my college level classrooms. None of the faces in the classrooms will be recognizable to me. How will I cope? Once I get into these classrooms, will I be able to understand and complete the assignments. Spring 2009 Reassured Senior Although college life will be new, I know that this experience is necessary to achieve a successful career and life. Leaving the familiar surroundings of my high school will take some getting used to, but I know once I am settled into my new environment at college everything will be comfortable again. I may like my new surroundings a whole lot better because I will have more freedom to myself. New faces mean that I will form new friendships and these new friends will bring me comfort since they will be going through the same experiences. As long as I set my mind to succeeding in college I will.

Shannon

I would tell myself to be more aware of the stress and work loads that are to come in college. I would also tell myself to learn time management skills now cause it will be very helpful in the future. I would also tell myself to choose my friends my carefully because your desicions will always be there in the back of your mind and in a small school be careful of all the drama.

ALYSSA

When entering college, please stay focused on the goals in your life. Don't let this new phase and the stereotypes that come with attending college deter you from your purpose in continuing your education. There will many friends who may try to sway you to try out the wild college life, but stay true to yourself, stay true to your upbringing, and stay true to your faith. Be mindful that every individual you meet is not there for the good of your life. Keep those ones that are close to you. Don't let anything or anyone take your focus off of your education. Attend all your classes, get to know your teachers, ask for help when you need it. Don't procrastinate because you are setting yourself up for stress in the end. Keep a planner with all important due dates displayed so that you know week to week what needs to be done. Don't overload yourself. Do what you are able to do and don't promise anything else. Do your work and your work only, you are not receiving financial aid for doing others' work. Stay focused on your goals and succeed with greatness.

Courtney

Get better grades; stay away from the drama; take the advice of my parents and older sister; ask for more help from teachers; create better study habits;

Courtney

Take classes more seriously. Get involved in more clubs besides varsity sports.

April

I would tell myself to plan to work hard. There are going to be a lot of interest things to get into in college but time management is key to enjoying your personal time and succeedin in your academic life. I would tell myself to not be shy to try new things and to always seek help and ask questions when confused and scared.

There is a right school for EVERYONE so look. It may be big, it may be small, it may be local or far away but everyone needs to go, because there is no greater learning experience than college. When you find the right school for you do as much as possible on the campus and have fun, make mistakes, live, and don't look back too often, its not healthy.

Bronwyn

Follow your heart.

Annabel

Pick the place that feels most right to you, and get involved.

Roberta

Make sure you pick a school that has what you want and things that are fun to you. Don't let anybody try to tell you what school is best for your child. Let the child visit the school during touring days to get the feel of the campus for themselves. Start thinking about what career you would like to be involved in early and your college hunt will go much easier!

Visit the colleges your looking at, spend the night in the dorms and try the food. Sign up for as many clubs and sports as you can.

Dayna

Make sure you know the right size school, and find a good advisor.

Kat

I believe that it is important to have a good understanding of classroom experiences and housing situations. To make the most of a college experience it is necessary to stay focused and complete assignments.

Leon

Choosing a college is serious, and it has to be what fits your student BEST. You may want him/her to attend a certain school, but it may not be their style. The experience is what you make it. Get involved, stay busy and if you can talk to your professors. I love my choice for school and even though I can't afford it, I believe in the end it is worth it and right for ME. I love the academic setting of VWC and I couldn't see myself any where else.

Shannon

Explore the campus first. I knew the minute after I finished touring Virginia Wesleyan that that was where I wanted to be. Without visiting the college you can't really tell if it is the right place for you. Something about the college has to connect with you in order for you to be happy with the decision you make. You should also sit in on a few classes that may be connected with your intended major or classes that you think you might take, in order to find out what the teachers are like that you may end up seeing a lot throughout college. If you don't like the teaching styles of several of the teachers you meet, then the school is not for you.

Allison

Make sure you can afford it before you start.

Kasey

The student and the parent should not settle on a school. I regret selecting this school. The student should think about many aspects when picking a college or university. They should first check out the size of the scool, average class size, teacher to student ratio, any tutuoring programs, activties on campus, how much financial aid they will give you. If the administrators and dean are kind and understandable, how much diversity, security and how fast they can respond, special features that the college offers, dorms and residence halls (if they are suitable to live in, bugs, how many roomates) and if there are any stores or anything surrounding the campus in case you don not have a car you need food during the week and if they give work study positions to the right canadites and what the process is get a job on campus. colleges really needs to listen to their students becuase at the end of the day they should want us to have a wonderful college experience and I think that all the things mentioned previously will defintely contribute to a good college experience.
