Washington State University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Bryan

Classmates are an ecclectic mix of unique individuals who are generally either eager to learn or eager to party, but rarely both.

Jana

Since it was originally an agriculturally based school there are still a lot of "hicks" but there's also a ton of people from Seattle and lots of international students as well. There aren't many "non-traditional students" because it takes a lot to pick up & move your family to Pullman, so it's mostly people right out of high school. It's quite a mix.

Nicole

My classmates are enthusiastic, interested in learning, friendly, intellectually gifted and competent; I attend the Honors College (smaller classes with different requirements) within Washington State University along with the general university.

Danielle

My classmates are focused on what they want to achieve from their education and are very driven.

Eda

Classes can get a little challanging, and yes there can be some competition. But overall we are all cougars and know how to help eachother to survive in those hard classes..

Jordan

By and large, they enjoy partying, and that usually means drinking. This is a conservative region of Washington, so they tend to be conservative. There are all kinds of people here, nerds, jocks, etc., just like in high school. But they all share the same intense passion for Wazzu, and that's what makes this school great. Once a Coug, always a Coug.

Janae

For the most part, everyone is friendly and is there to help.

Amy

They are diverse intellectuals

Crystal

Unfortunately, there is still tension with everything on campus. Even the LGBT has problems with Lesbians if you aren't butch or femme enough. It is that middle lying ground, the 'grey area' that everyone has issues with. Not just with LGBT but all groups. l And the Christian and Republican student body will always be trying to shove their beliefs down your throat. Trust me, it's not fun. Please see my 'Big Picture' paragraph to see more about the social ness.

Nico

The area is open to all types of people.

Jo

So what Ive noticed most about students at WSU is how diverse they all are. I grew up in a small town that is primarily white republican hicks and being at WSU I love how diverse the culture is. There is pretty much every ethnicity, religious group, and political group on campus. To help celebrate these differences there are many clubs for the different groups as well.

kyle

Mostly in-state students. Don't know much about the body.

Sarah

Honestly, don't know much about this. A lot of the activies are held along Terrall Mall, and being in sciences, I'm not near there to see the different activities going on.

Megan

There are a few redneck and cowboy looking kids that go to school here, but its a huge campus, and people can find just about every type of social group at this school. Going Greek is huge at Washington State. But there are many different social networks, and it definitely is not like high school with the cliques. Everyone kind of hangs out with everyone.

Alexander

There is some diversity in the student body, mostly in the form of exchange students. Political awareness is slightly better on the whole than in your average kindergarten class, but not by much. Rich little snots and people that just shouldn't be in collegiate life abound here, so if that's who you hung out with in high school be prepared for the second verse to be the same as the first.

Jason

never do anything

Katie

I wouldn't say that that there is a "typical" Washington State student...in general, WSU students are very social, outgoing, and friendly. WSU students come from both the West side and East side of Washington and each group brings a different perspective and different ideas, which can be refreshing or, at times, create conflict. I never felt out of place, andI feel that anyone will be able to find a group that they can belong to.

Harper

I wish the school was more diverse, I feel that the campus and community at large suffers greatly from defacto stereotypes and stigmas. While there is not really blatant racism, and the institution itself incourages tolerance and diversity, I still feel that this a sheltered community with minimal diversity.

Andy

I feel like there's a huge mixture of people and there's always a club or group of friends there for you in whatever you'd like to try. I feel like for the most part I've met a lot of OBAMA!! supporters but I've met a few republicans who say they're repubs b/c of their religion.

Jennifer

This school is not very diverse and that could be one of its downfalls but the student body here is amazing. Generally people here are so polite, helpful, and friendly. Apart from athletes, most people are from around here so you feel even when you go home the people here are not to out of touch. It's hard to describe the student body here, without talking to another student who goes here.

Courtney

If you don't want to succeed here, then you wont. If you want, their are groups for every interest, intermural sports, clubs within majors, and lots of activities for all students. There are cultural clubs, movies on the weekends, an amazing Greek System, and plenty of organizations to help you succeed.

Sean

In my experience, there are many different kinds of people in the WSU student body. As a whole, we are well-rounded. Whatever your interests, there is someone who shares them.

Chris

The student body is admittedly mostly white. That said, there is no obvious divide between races among the students, as is seen in many schools that have large minority populations. It is a laid back group of students, with race and socioeconomic status having no effect on groups of friends. Most of the students from WSU come from Western Washington, although there is a large population from Spokane.

Bridget

Very passionate for what they believe in. All students accepted.

Jennifer

Students are very casual going to class. It's normal to see the majority of students in sweats or a sweatshirt. Most Washington State students are from the west side of the state. Most students are fairly liberal unless they are from around this area.

Chris

Our student body is amazing, hands down. We have so much school spirit, we are a family. WSU students are involved, and get to know each other. Everyone makes me feel so comfortable.

Mel

I feel like student body of WSU comes from all over. Yes, mainly the students who attend are Washington state residents but there are also a lot of students from other states and even other countries. Our school is pretty diverse considering where we are located. It's kind of surprising actually...

Alisyn

Is really active in the community, everyone is apart of something, Greek Life, highly recomened! community service, clubs, whatever is out there we do!

Robin

Is really diverse. People come from all kinds of different backgrounds. While it is not very racially diverse, people's family situations, financial status, and hometown vary greatly.

Chelsea

Many students wear sweats to class- something that apparently doesn't happen on other campuses. I don't think anyone would ever feel left out here because I think people are accepting and there are so many clubs and groups that you would always be able to find someone to be friends with. As I said earlier, everyone has being a Coug in common and that in itself creates a bond.

Kelsey

Most students at this school seem to white and asian, not many other ethnic groups. There is a large presence of different christian groups on campus, but not many other religious groups. Most WSU students are from the western side of Washington state; however, there are also many from the tri cities.

Amanda

Honestly, we are not very diverse, but you do get a good mix of people from big cities, small towns, and everywhere in between. There is a gap between greeks and res halls, but that gap is slowly being bridged through Homecoming Week, philanthropies, community service, and more.

Bobby

Anywhere you go you always hear racial comments, jokes, etc. Theres no escaping it. Especially in a town with a black population so small. I have noticed the black population is probably smallest in pullman, next to the latino population. But the students here are all different, we all look different, dress different, and act different. Alot of WSU students are from the Seattle area, but there are many of us, like me who are not.

Devin

Students shouldn't feel out of place because Cougar pride doesn't depend on race. Most students are from the westside and thats awesome.

Casey

I think the diversity of WSU's student body rivals than of nearly any other college. Walking around campus you'll find members of every racial and religious catagory as well as various other lifestyles.

Katrina

WSU has pretty much every club you could think of-there's something for everyone. Lots of fundraisers go on throughout the year. I wear jeans, a tshirt or NorthFace jacket, and flipflops or Ugg boots to class, depending on the weather. It snows here a lot, so bring lots of warm clothes! Most WSU students are from the West side of the state, such as the Seattle area and Vancouver area-other students are from the East side, such as the Spokane area and Tri Cities area. Most students come from a middle class family.

Dan

The student body is so incredibly diverse here at WSU that it is nearly impossible for a student to feel out of place. The political spectrum is completely represented here, with an active student organization representing each end.

Candice

The students body is pretty closed minded a lot of times, however, things are changing. Colleges any where are usually more open to minority groups than in an old town down south. There are many groups on campus that concentrate on being a minority. Most students are from the west side of the state which is hilarious because this makes the entire state Cougar country and is a huge slap in the face to UW-- our cross state rival.

Lance

People here are fine, mostly middle class white kids from the westside of the state, with a good number of rednecks thrown in. Students seem to mostly segregate themselves according to degree progress. Class is just the easiest place to meet people and since you will end spending so much time with them on projects, it makes sense to be friends. Students here are not politically active, I think apathy rains supreme in most cases of civil or social awareness. The biggest issue facing most students is when the next time they will get tanked and how well the basketball team is doing.

Cassandra

I don't run into many of the groups on campus but lots of individuals. I have been put down for my race because I am native american but I don't let it bother me. What bugs me is when people put me down for my religious beliefs. There was one incidence where a person told me that he couldn't believe that i fell for the bible and that it is just some story that some guy made up and i'm just one of the many idiots that fell for it. Most students wear what they want to class so you see a lot of diversity on campus.

Krista

As far as I have seen, there isn't any discrimination at all of any kind. Whether its race, beliefs, money, or whatever. Of course there are groups of people that may have opinions about some things, I havn't heard of anyone being put down because of any of those things. I'd say everything is pretty much average with everything. It is a big campus, and a big mix of different people from all kinds of backgrounds.

Justin

Students here are awesome because you can meet a wide variety of people and become friends with people you would never expect to become friends with. There are lots of groups to get involved with and everyone is very friendly because we are all here for the same thing.

Katie

WSU is a wonderfully mesh of very diverse people. It still confuses and surprises me slightly when the Pacific Islanders club is selling tickets to their Luau and I know snow is just around the corner. I love seeing all the clubs and groups working together with the community making Pullman a place we all want to be.

annette

I have friends that are of various races, religions, and socio-economic statuses standing but I do not take part in any such group on campus. I don't know what type of students would feel out of place in WSU--I have not directly experienced any negativity or exclusion toward different types of groups. Most students wear jeans, a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and the infamous north face leece to school. I think different types of students interact with others. I assume most Washington state students are from Washington...with a fair number from Hawaii as well. I'm not sure what the most prevalent financial backrounds are - doesn't come up in conversation that much. Some students are politically aware and some are not. I'm not sure what the ratio of left to right to center is here at WSU. Yes, students do talk about how much they will earn some day.

Jeff

The students body is full of pride because when you are here for a while and realize you have nothing to do to entertain yourself besides develop relationships around you, you start to get really close to your friends. Students are pretty cool but pretty lazy. There are a few that get involved and politically active. The school is pretty even between conservatives and liberals.

Daniel

WSU students are very diverse there are a number of ethnic religious sexual orientation based clubs and groups. Everyone is treated with respect but students that were really metro, emo or hippy clothing would most likely feel out of place, although some do and seem to feel quite relaxed. Most of the men have the expensive snowboarder / surfer look going on. The women dress to kill although there look is not real creative it is obviously very expensive and looks really good. There is some separation of groups; people that are in the their groups don’t go out of their way to interact with new comers.

Brittany

Being in RHA I work a lot with the different groups on campus from the pacific islanders club right down to the GLBTA. It is really hard to form stereotypical groups when looking at the students around campus because everybody is so diverse but that doesn't stop them from getting along and being friends. Even in the dining halls its hard to determine the groups that are sitting together because there is always one or two people that don't allow the group to be stereotyped.

Dylan

Most students at WSU are white. Dress at WSU is normally very casual, with the occasional professional dress for people doing mock job interviews or musical performances. Mingling among what ethnicities are at WSU is common. Students who aren't pledges in residence life tend not to talk with people in Greek life. WSU is politically split, with actively competing student organizations working on both sides.

sam

From what I've experienced all races or groups interact very well. I came here not knowing ANYBODY. Now that I have friends they're from all different racial backgrounds, and we all have a good time.

Brenden

With almost 20,000 undergrads at WSU, there are all sorts of clubs and student bodies on campus. The largest student body is the greek system with I think 16 fraternities and 9 sororities. They are pretty much everywhere you look on campus, always involved in something. Those students tend to be the funnest and loudest who are always at the football/basketball games. These students in teh Greek system are known for being rich snobs sort of wit no backbone or mind of their own. That is what many people see them as because if you are not greek then you arent invited to many parties and you dont meet many people. So its a tough decision to make when you come here. Before, when I was in the greek system and I would tell girls that I was in a fraternity, you have no idea how many times I would hear, "Oh...you are a 'frat' guy?" Usually, college students are more liberal, however, there is a very large conservative student body here. So if you tend to be more liberal, dont fret, there is still a large liberal body as well.
