What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

meghan

I would say engage in multiple college tours/visits and once the decision has been made on which school student is attending, get involved!

Nicole

As a student you need to focus on yourself while picking the school you wish to attend. Although many people might have thier own ideas in mind about where you belong or what you should do, you are the person that gets to make that decision. Think about if you could see youself at the schools you visit, is it the right size, do you see people walking around that you think you would fit in with. Most importantly, don't base your choice on the outward appearance of the school. It may look beautiful or you like the lay out but if you completely disregard other aspects of the school that picturesque place can get old really fast. Just enjoy your time looking for schools and never jump to quick decisions.

Sarah

My advice would be to take your time and really think things through before making a decision. Think about all aspects of the college and visit it more than one time. Make a list of all the things you enjoy doing and things you enjoy being around. When you visit these schools, see how many of them meet your requirements. Going to a college that is focusing on your main interest can be a great idea because that college can get you started right away on your focus and usually the faculty and staff has good experience with what they are teaching. If you are someone who is unsure about what to do or major in, goin to a college with a lot of majors might be a good idea so you can try things out your first few years of college. The main thing is taking your time. Make sure you are comfortable and happy with most aspects of the school and choose a school that will benefit you, and do not worry what others are doing.

Start searching early and make sure you visit all the colleges you are looking to apply too. Don't just look at what you think is going to be your major. You may wish to change your major so look at other majors offered that might be possible fall back majors. Also, look into what extracurricular activities are offered. Learning outside or the classroom is close to as important as the learning in the classroom. Getting involved in activities you love will be a chance to met people with similar interests that you will want to continue to hang out with. When in classes it is important to participate in disscussions. It is the best way to learn. Getting to know the teachers and talking to them outside of class also helps to build a relationship for latter in the year when you might need an extention on a paper or some help with an assignment. Lastly, don't go to college because your parents want you to or because you feel it is expected of you. That is just setting yourself up for failure. Go to college because you want to study and learn for your future.

Joey

There are a lot of factors that affect your decision to go to a certain college. Weigh them all equally, then choose the least expensive. Truth is, you can get an undergrad anywhere, but where you want to go after college depends on the effort you give. you choose your own path, and this is the 4 years not to screw it up.

Katherine

Firslty, decide if you want to stay local or go out of state. Apply to and go visit as many as you can because you're not guaranteed to get accepted into all of the ones you want, or the only one you want. Then you'll be stuck with no acceptances. Also, the reason you want to visit as many as you can, especially if you'll be living on or around campus is because you want to see not only what the college has to offer, such as the living quarters, parking arrangement, and quality of dining commons food, but also what the town and surrounding areas have to offer. When you do visit be sure to bring a list of things that are most important to you, what you want most from you're college and the experience you have there. Some examples would be the area, how far from home, the cost, the food, the extra curriculars and sports, etc. It's also good to look at off campus housing if desired and the availability of it as well as job opportunities.

Samuel

Make sure that you visit a school while students are in session. This will help you get a feel for what campus life is truely like. You also want to make sure that you start off strong as a freshman. You do not want to spend the next four years trying to bring up your GPA. Do not rush into a major if you are not positive it is something you will enjoy doing. Make friends and have fun!

adele

My advice would be to really think about what you see yourself doing in the future. Not what would be fun, or what you think pays the most, but what you really want to be doing with your life. Money is not always the deciding factor when it comes to a carreer in specific fields. If you get to your school and are enrolled in some classes that really don't interest you, it's O.K. to explore. Explore other options, other fields of study, other elective classes. See what interests you and see what you like. Your interests are always changing but the ones that excite you the most are the one that are going to help you the most when deciding what to concentrate on at school. Also, enjoy yourself, these are supposed to be the most exciting and fun filled years of your life right? If you need to take a break from your biology homework, take one! make your own fun if you have to. Never overwhelm yourself and always make sure you leave time for yourself, to relax and take mind off your studies. And of course, be safe!

Nicole

This is the one time you have to be completely selfish about a very important decision in your life. Visit every college you would ever think of attending and never be afraid to ask questions, remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. This is your future in your hands, think hard about it and choose whats best for you, not your parents or your friends or relatives, choose for YOU!

Heather

I believe it is so important for students to at least begin a career development process prior to attending college. It is always better to choose a college that fits the students needs academically, socially, and possibly even financially. For instance, if you decide you want to be a teacher or at least in the educational system, Westfield State College is a good choice because it is focused on education. If the student wants to be a nurse, Springfield Technical Community College is an excellent choice because it's nursing program has a very good reputation. If the student wants to be an athlete, Springfield College is a good choice. If the student wants to be a scientist, maybe UMASS would be the best option. Although it is difficult to determine this while still in high school, there is always the option of transferring colleges, like I did. Also, finances is important for a student-but it is not everything. Schools generally offer scholarships and financial aid, also students loans are always available. Students do not need to know it all before deciding where to go to college, but knowing their general direction would certainly help.

Sean

There are a lot of different choices when it comes to a college education. Remember that the most expensive colleges are not necessarily the best and are not right for everyone. Think about what jobs would make you happy and chose choose a college that offers courses in that field. If you don't know what you want to do, it's okay. There is plenty of time to think about what careers you are interested. Taking introductory classes will help you get a feel for what you are interested in. It's okay to feel nervous about going to college but remember that you are not the only one. Make new friends and enjoy the time you spend there because time at college moves fast.

Gina

Pick a college that you feel comfortable with. Do not go somewhere because your parents want you to. You need to be somewhere that you can make a life for the next 9 months. In addition, make the most of your college experience by getting out there and signing up for clubs and organizations and getting involved. You never know whats out there until you get involved so at least try to get into different things that might be outside of your comfort zone it will all be worth it.

Edward

Your social atmosphere will determine your college expirence.

Jackie

I would say that it is important to visit many colleges and observe classes and students. It is important to ask questions and be able to experience different types of schools before making a decision - be educated on the size, diversity, majors offered, location, etc in order to pick the best school for you. Also, it is important to get involved on campus in order to meet as many people as possible and use your time more efficiently. Keep an open mind!

Courtnie

Choose wisely. Don't choose a school that you people say is right for you. Go and visit the school first.

Leah

If you want to live on campus, check the res life. Its importent that alot of people live on campus along with you, to give it the best expirience, and make sure they have alot of activities.

Molly

When you first start school, make sure you get out and hang out with people, even if you don't know them that well. A good way to meet people who have the same interests as you is to join a club or activity.
