How Do You Receive Florida Scholarships?

If you’re a student looking to attend a school in your home state of Florida, you could add a little bit of sunshine to your college savings, too! Florida scholarships for college go to eligible students who qualify on the basis of financial need or merit. Some providers may set aside scholarships for Florida residents only.

Many FL colleges typically may give Florida merit scholarships to new undergraduate students. You typically need at least a GPA of 2.0. For many scholarship applications, you may need to submit the FAFSA. Two of the largest FL colleges, University of Florida and Florida State University even also offer awards to out of state college students. Both schools’ out of state scholarship is merit based. You typically could be considered when you apply for admission.

Are There FL Scholarships for Graduate Students?

Scholarships for graduate students in Florida do exist. These come from a range of sources including colleges, associations and businesses. Since master’s and PhDs often cover specific fields of study, you might narrow your search by your area of study.

To give you an idea, the Lagrant Foundation offers 20 Florida scholarships of $2,500 each to U.S. grad students and eligible non citizens. Among the criteria are a 3.2 GPA. Your major is either in PR, advertising, or marketing. Applicants must also be African American, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic, or Native American. One partner school is Florida Memorial University.

As a college student, you may be eligible for funding from the state of FL. The José Martí Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund is one example. It is a need based merit scholarship. It provides financial assistance to qualifying Hispanic students. Eligible applicants must have a 3.0 GPA. You also plan to attend a public or eligible private university. If you plan to apply, you must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid each year.

Your county may also have sources of funding. American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Foundation, Inc. offers a $1,000 award called the Wayne Nelson, KB4UT, Memorial Scholarship. It is for U.S. students who are licensed radio amateurs and live in central Florida (e.g. Brevard, Polk).

What is the Bright Futures Scholarship Program?

Bright Futures is from the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA). It is part of the Florida Department of Education. There are four scholarship awards. Eligible applicants must be Florida high school graduates and U.S. citizens. You must enroll in an associate, bachelor’s degree or certificate program at a Florida college.

The program offers the following Florida scholarships to eligible students.

The process to apply is to first submit a Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA). You must do this no later than Augusts 31 after you graduate high school. All awards use two main criteria to qualify: academic achievement and community service.

For example, you typically need at least a 3.0 GPA. You need to complete high school course credit hours. Eligible high school graduates must also meet certain ACT/SAT scores. You need to complete and document your service hours. You must have a high school diploma before going to college.

The scholarship renews each academic year (up to the scholarship limit). But you must keep up your grades and earn the required credit hours. OSFA calculates the award amount differently at 2 year, 4 year or technical schools.
