Are There Scholarships for Being Short?

Scholarships for being short often fall under the category of “unusual”. That said, if you are short and no taller than 4’10” in height, you may qualify.

Some scholarships are open to all college students with a medically diagnosis of dwarfism. You can also have family members who are dwarfs.

There are two different Little People of America scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. The awards range from $250 to $1000. Eligible applicants must be a LPA member who is diagnosed with dwarfism or has a family member with dwarfism.

2020 Overcoming Adversity Scholarship

Must be a undergraduate or graduate or GED holder with a GPA of 3.0 and higher to be eligible. A detailed essay on how the applicant has encountered and overcame hardship is required.

Jockey Club Scholarship Jack Goodman Scholarship

The Jockey Club is an organization dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing. The Jockey Club Scholarship Jack Goodman Scholarship was created in 2007 and is awarded annually to a student or students at the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). The $6,000 ($3,000 per semester) annual scholarship is based on academic achievement, proposed career path in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and previous industry involvement. Goodman was a longtime member of The Jockey Club and is one of three founders of the RTIP.

NCTA & AWMF Scholarship

The Alliance for Women in Media was formed in 1951, originally as American Women in Radio and Television, the women’s division of the National Association of Broadcasters. This scholarship was created in 2015 through a partnership with NCTA- The Internet & Television Association. NCTA is the principal trade group for the internet and television industry, representing cable operators, content providers, and affiliated vendors.

Ford Empowering America Scholarship

The Alliance for Women in Media was formed in 1951, originally as American Women in Radio and Television, the women’s division of the National Association of Broadcasters. The AWM Foundation’s partnership with The Ford Motor Company has resulted in a second scholarship fund, Empowering America. Scholarship applicants are asked to profile or interview a female leader in their community (family, school, city or personal network), showcasing why and how this woman impacts those around her, with preference to subjects with ties to the media industry in some way. The “Empowering America” Scholarship program consists of one $3,000 scholarship for a winning student and one $2,000 scholarship for a student selected as runner-up, made payable directly to each student’s educational institute. The winning student will also each receive two tickets to attend the Gracies Leadership Awards event in the Fall. In addition, the winning student will create two profiles/interview pieces for the AWM website over the 3rd and 4th quarters of the year with guidance from AWM staff.

Little People of America Scholarship

Little People of America, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. Membership is offered to those people who are usually no taller than 4’10” in height. Their short stature is generally caused by one of the more than 200 medical conditions known as dwarfism. Membership is also available to relatives and interested professionals who work with short-statured individuals. As part of their service to people with dwarfism and the community at large, LPA offers educational scholarships to prospective and current students attending college or vocational school in the United States. Awards can range from $250 to $1000 (sometimes more). A scholarship committee, headed by LPA’s Programs Director, will review application packets, as well as individual donors. LPA scholarship awards shall be limited to two awards for undergraduate studies.

Ellen Highland Fernandez Scholarship for Graduate Studies

The Ellen Highland Fernandez Scholarship for Graduate Studies is for students obtaining a Masters or Ph.D. degree and enrolled for the 2020-21 school year. There will be one recipient Scholarships may be renewed (you have to re-apply) for up to 3 years of graduate work, at the decision of the Scholarship Committee.

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF) and Ford Motor Company Fund are looking for two promising female undergraduate or graduate students to provide future journalistic content for AWM. The “Emerging Voices” Scholarship program consists of two scholarships. The winner will receive $3,000 and the runner-up will receive $1,000, made payable directly to each student’s educational institute in the name of Ford Motor Company Fund. The winning student will receive one ticket to attend the Gracie Awards Luncheon, June 24, 2020 in New York City.

Loreen Arbus Foundation & AWMF Scholarship

This journalist scholarship program consists of one $2,500 scholarship, made payable directly to the winning student’s educational institute. The winning applicant is invited to attend AWMF’s Gracie Awards Luncheon June 24, 2020, in New York City to receive the scholarship in person. The scholarship is open to female undergraduate and graduate students studying media, journalism, English, communications and related fields enrolled in the 2020-2021 school year. Developed and administered at Nova Southeastern University, the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that creates and delivers innovative scholarship and educational programs for students of all ages through the use of internet-based quiz competitions.
