Arizona State University-Tempe Top Questions

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Jesus

The most frustrating thing about my school can sometimes be the fact that it is such a huge campus and so it takes a while to get around campus.

Edward

The first two years of classes involve large lecture hall type classes the are very impersonal. It can't be helped due to the large enrollments but it was very frustrating for me to feel like a person during the early years.

Sydney

The most frustrating thing about my school has to be simply the communication between students and staff. All of my teachers office hours are during the time that I have class, so being able to make an appointment is very important to me. This is frustrating because teachers have forgotten appointment times and this prevents me from being able to reach my full potential during certain areas in the class that I need help on.

Nathan

The most frustrating thing about my school would probably be the university's stance on the +/- system of grading. In some classes, to get an "A" you have to get above a 95.5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}! An "A-" is a 3.67 which can really hurt your GPA overall, especially when you get into the more challenging 300 level classes. Some teachers have the +/- system and some don't. Personally, I think it should be gotten rid of. However, teachers should at least use the same methods university-wide.

Christine

The three things that I find most frustrating about the school are parking, advising, and when professors cannot speak English well. Parking is expensive and even temporary parking spots like meters and hourly parking garages charge til at least 10 at night. I have found the advisors almost useless; I have always told them what classes I should take. I feel that I could be an advisor with not much training. Finally, in my Chemistry major classes, it is common to have teachers that do not speak English very well which adds to the already difficult class.

Anil

The most frustrating thing about Arizona State University is the parking. Parking permits, which were once $75 per year four years ago are no $250. This permits you to park in a spot roughly half of a mile from classrooms, and the parking is not guaranteed. For permits in parking structures, the costs is over $600.00. This school is not good enough to charge that much for parking. It's unfair to students, especially since tuition over the same period of time has seen a 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} increase.

Jacqueline

Trying to find accessible parking

Mitsuko

The most frustrating thing about school is finances!

Cristina

Classes fill up quickly

timothy

The beauracratic nonsense, the financial aid department is a bitch to figure anything out.

Kaela

Because the campus is huge, unless you have a few close friends, you can get lost in the shuffle. When trying to finalize your schedule, housing, finances, etc., the lines can be long and the processes tedious from semester to semester.

Catherine

I think that the out-of-state tuition is reasonable, but there are a lot of fees that ASU slaps you with on top of tuition. So, if you do pay out-of-state tuition, plan on spending 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} more than that on fees, books, etc. The reason it is frustrating is because there is very little leeway in paying these fees, and they do not tell you about them until you are forced to pay them.

Julie

Different departments really aren't in touch with one another! It makes getting anything done really complicated.

Kiera

calling to talk with student services. The phone is always busy

Philip

The most frustrating thing about my school is most likely the lack of help that comes from counselors and all other school materials while trying to plan long-term. While not impossible to overcome, it is less than facilitating and highly, well, frustrating.

William

There is a beauracracy that hampers the creative energy that surrounds the students of this school. Though when a student pushes throught this permeable barrier he/she can reap great rewards for their efforts.

Ashley

The most frustrating thing about Arizona State University would be how easy it is to get lost in the ?crowd?. If you don?t get involved in extracurricular activities it is much harder to meet new students. It is also very easy to blend in with all the students in a classroom. Since the class sizes are so big you are graded mostly on four big exams and not on assignments/projects/papers that you can use to help stand out from the other students.

Lili

I think the most frustrating thing in my school is too many traffic

Christine

Dealing with advising is the most frustrating if you wait until it is too late. Plan ahead and make your advising appointment early so you don't have to deal with all the hassle.

Jeffrey

How big it is.

Travis

There are a lot fo people and it is sometimes very hard to ride your bike around campus. Parking passes are also ridicuoulsy expensive!

Kirsten

It can be frusterating working with the advisors, depending on what department you are involved in. I had a difficult time with this, as the criteria changed and only certain classes were available. I also find it discouraging that the Dean is anti-Greek life.

Kelsi

Some of the classwork.

Justin

The most frustrating thing about ASU is that most social activities revolve around some sort of alcohol. Many of the students cannot wait to go to the bars or house parties on the weekends. However, there are many students who do not always have to participate and can have a very good time with out the use of alcohol.

Paul

How spread out classes of the same subject are.

Sarah

The most frustrating thing about Arizona State University are the huge budget cuts that were put into effect recently.

Edel

Trying to find a parking space and having to pay for parking even though we pay almost $8,000 in tuition. Students should be able to park for free.

Joshua

Enrolling in the necessary classes to graduate on time. Many times the classes fill up to quickly, or in some cases the classes are removed entirely without notifying the students who require them.

Holland

The school is so large that you have to find someone to guide you through the process.

Joseph

Probably its size. The dormatories are not technically "on" campus. They are close but not on. I have classes that are on the total opposite side of campus and its frustrating.

ernesto

I do not think there is anything frustrating in this university. I believe that the staff in this school is very knowledgeable and does everything they can to help the students. Specially my college, all my studio instrcutors have been very helpfull to me and my classmates giving up their times to meet outside the class time if the students have any questions or concerns. This has been the same way since my freshman year and I am glad I chose this great University.

Amanda

The most frustrating thing about this school is getting the classes you want in the times you want. There are too many people here, so registration is a pain.

Yaroslav

It gets hot every now and then.

zachary

Spread out over a big area

Jennifer

It is impossible to become a resident for lower tuition costs. Even though I have been living in Tempe, Az for 4 years, I am not considered a resident because my parents try to help me pay for school.

April

A lot of people run into people on bikes and skateboards.

Michelle

I am frustrated with the school because the attitude on campus is that school does not matter. They treat it is a penance they have to go through in order to get their parents to essentially pay for them to go out and drink.

Nico

The most frusturating thing about Arizona State is the class sizes. Most of the business classes and freshman level classes are huge. I know a friend who had over 500 students in his sociology 101 class and that is just way to much. Their should be more professors to limit the amount of students in each class.

Vanessa

A lot of times it is very hard to get ASU to care about you as the student. Often times I feel like a business transaction and in the past few years I strongly feel that ASU President, Michael Crow, is taking Arizona State from being a highlight university with an AMAZING student life and trying to take away all that is student life. Restirctions on football tailgating, greek life, and other student organizations and athletic programs is making the desire to go to asu (from students who want the WHOLE experience) lesser.

Devon

My school is trying to make a name for itself as a research college, and I feel that some of the other facets are getting shoved aside. There are also many very expensive things such as parking and tuition itself that just seem to keep going up without any change in quality.

Celeste

The focus on the greek life.

Zareen

parking

Megan

It is a big school, so you need to have patience, and learn to work with people, instead of against them. But mostly if you smile, and say please and thank you, you will get what you need to know.

Alex

Very big campus, with 60000 students, sometimes it is hard to get the attention from teachers or in other words that one on one interaction

Danielle

I would have to say that the most frusterating thing about my school is how big it is. The amount of people in each of the classes really affects the quality of education. Because of the huge numbers we have, professors are only able to administer exams, and grades are based solely on the grades of those exams. Students are not given the opportunity to prove themselves in other ways such as projects, papers, and homework. So school becomes more about getting the grade rather than learning and applying the material.

Julie

The academic advising can be terrible. I went through four advisors before I found one who knew what she was taking about. I love my current advisor, but I still remember my incompetent ones. Make sure you check your schedule with two or three people before registering for classes or making an important decision. Don?t take no for an answer. Ask around. There is usually a way to petition, override, etc. your way around a problem. When you find a great advisor (yes...they do exist), stay with him or her. :)

Reyna

The financial aid office! There are tons of guidelines that dont make much sense to a student who has no way to pay for college

Alex

There are too many people who attend.

christina

large, not personal, didn't feel like program met my needs in dance.

Marc

The out of state tution.
