What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Assuming my past self would even listen to me I would inform him of numerous aspects of college life and making the transition. In terms of making the transition I would urge him to mature and have more disciplin. When telling him about college life I would inform him of the positives and negatives of college I would urge him to mature for several reasons. First, he should know that college professors do not hold their students hands. Consequently, I would advise myself to be more punctual as getting away with procastination in college is like trying to get away with murder. In terms of college life I would tell him that college life while fun must be taken seriously. Unlike highscool life college life should involve plannning and having disciplin to follow that plan. Although having fun is part of college disciplin must be constant in order to improve my chances. These are the most important factors i could preach to my past self. I would urge him to have disciplin and maturity for his benefit. Although I myself am still learning how to survive college life.

I'm glad you're taking preparing for college seriously, but be careful not to take it too seriously! Your apprehension over making mistakes could be paralyzing you and keeping you from making decisions at all. Try not to worry as much, but focus instead on applying for both schools and scholarships, on securing a good job and financial stability, and on making friends and living a little! Don't forget to stay focused on education, but it's also important to have time to relax and enjoy the company of your friends. Moving to college and living on your own will be a big transition, but it's not scary; just make sure you have a great support group. Your college friends are transitioning too, and it will be a lot easier if you're in it together. Oh, and be careful - that meal plan will go a lot faster than you think!

In high school, I almost gave up when I heard people saying that it only gets worse from here, that these are the best days of our lives. I would go back to tell myslef to take it easy, that people are wrong about these days being the best. I would say that college will be far better and not so rough. I would tell myself that there is so much more beneficial learning to be done in college. By saying this to my younger self, I may have been able to get through my senior year of high school with a little less stress and panic. Perhaps I could have thrived my senior year with this hope instilled in my heart of something better ahead of me. Instead of trying to enjoy my senior year, I ended up spending alot of time dreading the ending of the happy chapters of my life.

I would tell myself to not take anything that I learned in high school for granted. Many of the classes that I took in my high school did not have anything to do with the major that I was aspiring to enter in, so there were times that I questioned my high school's curriculum. I learned from my university that I would end up using the skills that I learned from those classes that I felt were unimportant. For example, in my senior year of high school, I had the option of taking English, for I had already received all the credits I needed. I took the English class anyways, even though I felt it was a waste of time. I thank the heavens that I took that class, for it helped me achieve an A in my college English class. It also helped me when I was enrolled in my Introduction to Mechanical Engineering class; for twenty percent of my final grade was based on writing a summary on how our group built a robot. The skills and knowledge that I've learned from high school allows me to continue to have success at Auburn University.

So far, I have endured one full semester of college and have just begun my second, and already I have experienced just what makes college worthwhile. Four hours away from home, not a familiar face in sight, I realized it just as my parents' car disappeared from view: it's all up to me now. It's up to me to make a whole new set of friends (perhaps I should start with my new roommates?). It's up to me to make sure my work gets in on time (since everyone knows leniency in college is practically nonexistent). It's up to me to determine where (and more importantly, who) I'm going to be for the rest of my life... What a glorious thought! To go from a more often than not stagnant environment to a place where every day can be a new adventure is by far the most liberating and inspiring experience one could hope for. And now, with more friends than I know what to do with, an improved work ethic, and a future that looks brighter than ever, I can say that gaining indepence has been the most rewarding aspect of attending college.

Taylor

In my college experience I have gained a wide variety of friends, a sense of independence, a great education, and overall development of the person I truly am. It has been valuable because my college years set the foundation for my future and help me see who I am capable of being and what I am destined to achieve.

In high school, I was sheltered. I grew up in a small town with more or less the same "type" of people. When I came to Auburn, I experienced a culture shock. I had the opportunity to get out of my "small town bubble" and see that there is a much bigger world out there with many different types of people. I have been fortunate enough to meet new people, join new organizations, and see the many different types of people and cultures that are in the world. Most importantly, I have been able to find out the type of person I am and what I aspire to be.

Amanda

I have loved every second at Auburn. I have grown and struggled through 3 semesters. The family that I gained by stepping on the campus will stay with my entire life. I seen what it takes to be successful and I know that Auburn University is the place to help me have a successful career life. Auburn has been more than just an educational experience. I have learned about myself and about not just relying on myself to get where I need to be! I believe in Auburn and love it!

Emily

My college experience had broadened my horizons in many ways. I have met so many new people. Some of them have become great friends, and others merely acquaintances. Either way, I have learned to accept and respect people of all backgrounds and I have learned about how people outside of my life live theirs. I have learned the importance of education and of hard work. Balancing a college education with very time consuming activities is extremely difficult, but well worth the hard work. I feel so accomplished and proud of myself. I have realized my full potential and am now prepared to work hard to continue my education. I want to be the best and be able to impact this world in the greatest way possible. Auburn University has not only allowed me to see my own potential, but has given me the opportunities to succeed.

Emilio

Through college I have developed as a whole person. It is not just about getting a degree to obtain a job. That is what I thought in May 2008, when I graduated Prophetstown High School. What I learned from Sauk Valley Community College is that struggle is good. Struggle gives me an opportunity to be resilient. Learning to be resilient has been so valuable. At Sauk, I was an RA and very involved on campus. So much so that I learned another lesson. Spreading myself to thin; this how I would describe my experience at the community college I attended. When I transferred to Aurora University I took this attitude of being resilient. I have taken the lesson I learned at Sauk that it is okay to say no. That it is better to be focused on few things effectively than to spend little time on many things. Here I made the greatest decision of my life. I accepted Christ on December 28, 2010. I am reborn and have a new feeling of resiliency that I have never felt before. Christ has given me the grace and tools to go to college and transform in to a future leader.

I have gotten the true definition of hard work, intiative, dedication, and the true value of friendship while attending Auburn University. I'm a firm believer of good things in life are worth hard work. I feel that things easily attained tend to lose true value to people. Hard workers take pride in themselves and the work that they do. Through hard work you automatically gain intiative and dedication, due to these being the main attributes of hard work. Having a high level of intiative and dedication makes your hard work very noticable by your peers as well as your advisors, and when they notice it you can bet your bottom dollar that it gets acknowlegded. While being at Auburn University i've also learned the true value and meaning of friendship. Many people take their friends for granted. But, I've learned that true friendship is being in a plutonic relationship someone and u grow to love that person like a sister or brother, someone you'd ask to be your best man or maid of honor at your wedding. Having a friend is always a good thing and feeling.

College has allowed me to spread my wings and experience alot of things I wasn't able to under my parents roof. I literally consider this time to eb the best time of my life because I can truly be my own person. The classes aren't boring liek they were in high school and i actually enjoy learning in them and going to class. I have made a lot of friends here that i know i can count on. College has made me a better person and it will keep getting better.

Morgan

During my college experience, I have gained many valuable characteristics that will continue to help me succeed throughout my life. I have learned time management, and also how to prioritize my tasks. These attributes will help me in the work force as well as in my home and family life. I have had the chance to gain leadership experience through the many clubs I have been involved in such as Tiger Tuesdays (the freshman SGA branch) and The National Society of Leadership and Success. Auburn is also the ideal place to meet new people and make life- long friends. The university offers chances to relax and not become too stressed out about class, which in turn, helps students to excel in the classroom. I would not trade my Auburn experience for anything in the world and I am very excited to see what else it has in store for me. Your assistance in helping me along this path would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Alyssa

Part of the college experience is throwing yourself out into the world and learning how to adapt. Although my college experience has been limited to only one semester at Auburn University it has been very difficult yet at the same time very worthwhile. I have had to adjust to living on my own, as well as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, and even paying bills all on my own. I have also had to “learn how I learn” as my academic advisor stated. One of the most difficult aspects of moving off to college was having to make a completely new set of friends. I was the only person from my high school to go to Auburn, so I did not know anyone. However, after a few days of going to class I found myself getting closer to my fellow peers. We would not only spend time together in class, but after class as well.

Alexis

The biggest thing that I have gotten out of my college experience is better direction and focus in my life. When I started back to school, I had a broad idea of what I wanted to do, but knew that since I was trying to juggle full time school, work, and two children by myself, I did not have to luxury of not having a clear plan. Now, I feel as though I know exactly what I want to do and how I am going to get there, and I am not going to let anyone or anything stand in my way.

Ashley

From my Auburn University undergraduate experience, I learned the value of sacrifice, determination, hard work, and family. The university is not only a learning institution but also a community. Students, faculty, and the community are all very open and dependable in the time of need. I couldve have asked for a better collegiate experience.

Alexa

My college expierence began in the summer of 2009. At the time i was going to be starting senior year, and I wanted to have some expierence under my belt. I was able to add an english class, and the class helped me a lot in my writing. By taking the class I also learned how the college system works. When I started college as a freshmen in college, I was more prepared than my friends because I already knew how college worked. I have learned how to be independent, how to work under pressure, and most of all ; ive learned that a college degree is necessary to get ahead in life.

Candace

So far, in my college experience, I have learned to just be myself as well as to just be happy with what you are capable of. Meaning, not to settle for less but to not beat yourself up about not achieving the unattainable. Furthermore, it has been very valuable for me to attend Auburn University because I have learned a new sense of school pride and family which I did not feel in high school.

Having only been in school one semster I can't say what the most valuable aspect of the adventure has been to date, but I know that based on just these past few months it will be some of the best years of my life. The friends you make here, at Auburn, are the ones that you know you will be keeping for life. I know that everyone here has a sense of honesty and genuineness that cannot be passed else where.

Keri

I am only a year and a half into my college experience, and I love it so much! It feels great to be on my own and learn new things. Not only have I gained irreplaceable knowledge in the classroom, but I have learned so much outside of class about different people, and a lot of different things. I think college has helped me (and is still halping me) become more mature, and will help me to become a responsible adult. Here, without my parents, I am responsible for my own actions. I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them as well. College has given me a taste of real life, and I look forward to graduating, because I know that I will learn even more after. But that being said, I am not ready to leave college yet! I still have a lot to learn!

sitaara

I have gotten a foundation to build on and I am gaining a degree to secure my familys financal future. I want to be able to provide for myself and my son without worring about if I will be able to get a job paying enough money to support my family. I don't want to have to depend on others to take care of my family for me, so that is why I attend school.

Mary

I have learned so much while attending Auburn University. Not only academically, but socially. I have been exposed to such diversity like I have never been around in my life. I have grown to love my Auburn family and feel support from faculty and students in each endeveour I have run into. Throughout my college career I have been challenged, rewarded, uplifted, and encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and allow myself to be exposed. Auburn University is not only a place to have a "college life", but also growing and life-shaping experiences. As a student at this university I have been exposed to obstacles that I never would have been able to accomplish if not for my academic advisors, financial aid advisor, and my best friends that I have met because of this wonderful university. I have learned to appreciate different things in my life, like I never would have before. I believe in Auburn and love it!

Stephanie

The thing that have gotten out of my college experience is to pick a carrer choice that makes you happy. For the reson that so many people change their majors so much just because they can not handle the work load; but if you can not handle the work load you might not lik that job of choice anyway. I say this because i have been working towards this major for three years now and at times I would love to take a easier major but I know if I changed I would not love the carrer choice in the end.

Emily

My experience here at Auburn University has opened up my mind, m heart, and has given my thoughts wings. At 18 yrs old and a new high school graduate, I was unsure of who I was to become, unsure of what I stood for exactly, and was fearful of the unknown. I am now a college Junior, majoring in political science with a minor in spanish. My work ethic has increased exponentially and I now have an understanding of what hard workd truly is, and strangely enough I enjoy it. I have grown in the way that I am now able to handle relationships and my daily activities with more maturity and confidence. I could not have chosen a better city to spend my college years in, Auburn is a perfect place to help student balance their school, goals, and social life equally.

Allison

I'm just beginning college but so far it's allowed me to grow culturally ,socially, spiritually and academically. Ive been challanged in the classroom but more importantly, I've been chalanged to meet students who are dissamilar to me. I've learned to share life with people form different states, countries and cultures. I've learned to see things their way and view the world around me with fresh, exciting eyes. In the few short months I've lived here I've immersed myself in a whole new environment; although it's a few hundred miles from home, I feel a world away. The most vaulable benefit I've aquired from attending college is the ability to be more cognizant of the world around me and to not only respect, but truly embrace the diversity that beautifully exists.

Shanequa

The best thing thing that I've gotten out of college is hard work pays off. Anything worth doing isn't going to be easy. Studying and hard work will lead me to the future I am destined to have.

joyna

College has been a self discovering experience. I have learned and matured so much, that I am daily surprising even myself. At one point in my life, i was shy and depended on everyone else to handle my problems. Since attending college a new wave of independence has invaded my thinking. Now i have no need to wait on someone else to accomplish something for me when i have the power to do it myself. Attending a college like Auburn University has pushed me to go out of the box by meeting new people, seeking assisitance when needed, and introducing me to various cultures and ideas everyday. Auburn Universtiy has made me realize that I am the only one who can make possibilities and dreams come true. In order for my dreams to become reality, I have to fight and persevere because failure is certainly not an option.

Tara

I haven't been apart of the university for very long. In fact at this time, I have only gone to freshman orientation. However, just through that experiance I know that I have made the right choice in my college choice. I was able to immediately meet people that I know that I will be friends with for a long time. Also I was able to meet several professors and based on those encounters I know that they are dedicated to helping the students. They emphasize getting to know your professors and all the current students I talked to said that the teachers are always available to help students with whatever they need. I feel at home when I am there and don't want to leave. I really enjoy being at the campus because it is positively beautiful.

Virginia

I came from a small highschool and a small town, and I was the first person in my whole school to come to Auburn University. Out of all the many lessons I learned throughout my first year in college, the most important thing I learned was getting involved. Getting involved not only allows you to give back to your college or uniersity, but it helps you make friends. I came alone to college, so I knew I needed to get involved. So I joined the Auburn University Marching Band. It was extremely time consuming and caused me to study more than I ever had just to keep up. But because I got involved in something, I was part of a group of people who loved me. The people I met just as a freshman allowed my first year of college to be something I would remember forever. Auburn University is my second home. And I can't picture myself anywhere else.

Success is built on the amount of effort one puts into something. As for me, using what I have gained through my college experience has been a great asset. I've learned a lot about the world around me, met many great and interesting people, and discovered things about myself that weren't always clear. College experiences are akin to legacies. They give birth to new people and new generations. They maintain equilibrium for those communities like mine that have too few resources and people with great ambition and afford them incredible opportunity. Though it has never been easy, the effort I puts into it and the perseverance required has made me a stronger and more diligent person slowly becoming more and more prepared for the world.

Jenna

I have learned the importance of working hard and managing your time wisely. I have received real-world work experience through an internship program at Auburn that enabled me to see what my career would be like one day. I have gained so much knowledge on life, education, and the future. I will always remember these years some of the best of my life. My college experience was so valuable because I was able to participate in so many extra curricular activities through one Engineering organzation. I was able to meet with alumni, network with potential employers, and be introduced to many substantial donors of the College of Engineering in particular. I feel so blessed to have gained all of these experiences, and I would not change a thing.

Shiran

The most significant lesson I believe I have learned during my time at Auburn University is that time is our most valuable possession as human beings. We are intelligent creatures with an astounding ability to perform time managment, however many people lack this skill. I am only beginning to understand the major importance of this as there never seems to be enough time in the day. I have developed a passion for learning and truly understanding the way the world works. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to read a textbook and then go out and actively apply the concepts in everyday life!

Chelsea

I feel I am receiving an excellent education and will be well prepared to enter the business world. Auburn University is a well respected university and provide excellent credentials for my resume. Being President of a 200 member social sorority has greatly increased and honed both my leadership skills and my time management skills. Majoring in Communications, it has been great having the Eagle Eye Television station on campus enabling me to get hands on experience. I have loved my college experience and I have made friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

Joyclyn

I have gained not only knowledge and useful tools about life during my college experience, but I have also gained knowledge about myself. College, in addition to being on my own and independent, has taught me a lot about myself and who I am as an individual. I have met many great people during my short time here at Auburn University. I feel as though I have established friendships during my first year that shall last a lifetime. In addtion to being educational, college has also been loads of fun. Going to football games, partying, hanging out with friends are just a few of the components that have highlighted my freshman year. I am looking forward for the many adventures ahead. Attending Auburn University has bee very valuable to me because it has blessed me with the oportunity to further my eduation and better myself as a person. I now have the ability to accomplish all those desires I dreamed about as a little girl. Through my college education, I will be capable of giving back to my family, community, and college. Auburn University to has been a dream come true. " I believe in Auburn and love it!"

Devon

College is more than just showing up to class, acing tests and going to football games. The experiences I learned from were the day-to-day interactions with fellow students, professors and anyone else that crossed my path. Learning to network and market myself has been invaluable with job interviews and other projects I have done in life. Without knowing how to 'go out there and get what you want,' you are stuck in a mediocre existence. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable is the concept to understand. The things in life that are worth having require work and that work started with my college experience.

Brittney

If I was allowed to go back in talk to myself as a Senior I would tell myself to get prepared for a long journey. I would have prepared myself to study more because you can not get through college without doing so. I would say that it is really important to be prepared for unexpected twist and turns in my path and to make friends but not get to tied up with them. Stay focused and be able to manage school and fun all together. Also that although most classes are not mandatory, it is still very important to attend them regularly and while doing so focus in on what the teacher has to say. And that PROCRASTINATION is not the key to success, it only leads to failure. But all in all enjoy my time in college and be the best at whatever I may do.

Andrew

College is a process that many people go through and come out in many different variations from the things they have learned. It captures the essence of your true identity as a person and challeges you to work hard and be fully responsible for the first time in your life. It's tough to summarize the many different things college has taught me in my two years but I seem to always look back to my first days comming to college and thinking this is my time to be an individual. The funny thing is that I have become more a part of a family here at Auburn than being my "individual." My college experience has come in my greater understanding of the world around me through experieces that only college can teach you and has already molded me to be a person who understands responsibity, hard work, and perserverance. Most of all I have learned the value of relationships and how important they are to me. I believe my college experience has taugh me how to deal with but also embrace every relationship I have in order to be successful in them the rest of my life.

Sarah

There is a lot to be said about the transition into college, and it?s a subject that I wish I could have been more informed on before starting my freshmen year. I have learned to be independent and more mature over the last few months, and I have gained wisdom that I would have given anything to have in high school. For starters, academics are so important throughout college, and I have learned not to procrastinate or approach college tests with too much ease. I now realize how important a good night of sleep is before test day; staying up all night studying is not the answer. Take academics more seriously than high school and use this time of continued education as an opportunity to gain wisdom. The social aspect of college is also very important because it defines who one is as a person. There are many new people to meet, but I realized that best friends will not be found immediately. Everyone experiences loneliness; some people are just better at hiding their emotions. Take the time to form genuine relationships. Treasure every new friend and experience, and always try to learn or gain from every situation.

Amanda

As a high school student, I would put college number on the list as soon as I graduated from high school. I would do as well in high school and keep good grades. I would talk with other people and find out if anyone was considering the same college ,in order, to possibly make living arrangements with them. I would be as much involved with the school's activities, so it was possible to meet and interact with as many individuals as possible. However, the most important, study hard and do my best. The better the GPA, the easier to transition into graduate to futher your education.

Katherine

Practice organization as a way of being. Learn to prioritize activities and assignments. Keep an agenda book or calendar and be diligent about writing things down throughout high school. Work ahead whenever possible, leaving time for last minute details or opportunities. Organize your physical surroundings as well. Knowing where to find things in your room, desk or book bag will help you transition to a dorm room or small apartment in addition to saving you a lot of frustration. You will not have your parents or the same kind of teachers in college to remind you of tasks that need to be done so learn now to be responsible, organized and conscientious. You will find that these practices could help you to keep your grades up and still be able to enjoy all that campus life has to offer. Good luck!

Abigail

Dear Abigail, I've been learning a lot lately. One important thing is that life is a long journey, and your path will cross the paths of others at times. There will be times that you'll walk along the path with them together, and there are times when your path forks with their own. Make deep friendships with those that really mean something to you because you'll never expect the time that comes when your path parts ways with another person. Remember that you're here for your studies, so work hard and excel. Keep things in perspective, remember, the Lord is guiding your life, so stay focused on loving other people and doing your best in all areas, your friendships, your studies, your body, and your time. There is so much to look forward to in the future, even as you go through bumps along the path. Learn from the brusies and keep walking forward with a smile. Don't try to be someone you think other people will like, they already like you for your corny sense of humor and energy. Every day is a blessing, so make the most of it. Sincerely, Future Abigail

Mark

One must feel hunger before the thought of eating enter's their mind, just as one can't appreciate something until going without it.

Jeanna

College is very different from high school in many ways. One of the biggest changes for me would be all the freedom and independence you have. The adviceI would give myself would be to manage my time wisely. Pay attention to the clock and what homework is due when. Parents are no longer by your side asking what all has to be completed for tomorrow. Another piece of advice I would give myself would be to get involved on campus with some kind of club or group that sparks your intrest. Its a great way to network and meet new friends with some similar intrests as you. Plus, you get to have fun! Those two things are what stand out to me and are something I would have told myself.

Kermilia

Here are the MOST important things that one should know before they make the transition to college. 1. Staying on campus your first year may be the smartest decision you'll ever make. Staying on campus makes it easier for you to network with freshman just like you and it also makes it easier to get involved in organizations your first year. 2. Pre-Order Your Books A great way to save money is to pre-order your books. When you Pre-Order, you dont have to run around the bookstore the first day like a chicken with your head cut off and also, those who pre-order usually get the cheaper used books. 3. You do NOT have to attend every party A big part of college is freedom, however, know when enough is enough. You dont have to attend EVERY party thats thrown. You arent missing anything, there WILL be other parties. TRUST ME! and FINALLY 4. Dont forget who you are You're going to change ALOT during the first and second semester of college, but dont forget what makes you, YOU. Individuality will get you the interviews and jobs that you want. Not being a copy.

Knowing what I know now about college life, if i was able to go back in time and give myself advice it would be about how to prepare and not to overwhelm myself. I would give this advice becasue I remember when i first thought of applying to colleges and other schools how nervous i was about everything. I worried wether or not i would have the financial capability or not and i also worried about leaving behind family and friends. The advice would be helpful because being so worked up and oerwhelmed about the college experience can make you hold it off longer and possibly not go.

Jodi

If I could go back to when I was a senior: I would tell myself that I should go to college, and not to give up your dreams. I am thirty nine years old attending Kaplan University for an associates degree in applied Science of Medical Transcription. I gave up my dreams the day I graduated, and I regret it. I am on Social Security Disability retraining for a new career in the medical field. Online distance learning is hard at my age to do. I work very hard for my grades. I push my self every day to stay where I am in school. My dream was to be a writter I ended up a waitress instead, or working in a manufacturing plant with just a high school diploma. Online learning is a challange for me. I have been out of school twenty two years. My advice to everyone is not to give up your dreams and futher your education at a young age. If I were able to go back in time I would of done things differently. If I only knew then what I know now my life would not be the way it is now.

Hannah

I would tell myself that college is a life changing experience. There are so many new and exciting things you cannot even imagine. The people you meet will impact your life forever. If you get the chance to live in the dorms you should take because it will teach you a ton about yourself and others. Living in the dorms will also allow you to appreciate what you have in a way that you cannot imagine at this point. The important thing to remember is that you will need to work harder than you probably ever did in high school in order to succeed. In the end it will be entirely worth it!

Meagan

I would explain to myself the importance of not being afraid to take that first step and engage in new activities - I was very nervous my first day at college, I wish I had just relaxed and enjoyed all the new activities around me instead of taking so long to open up to the wonderful activities Auburn Un. offers. Its a wonderful college and going to be the best time of my life!

Alex

The advice I would give myself would be that my study habits will have to change and I need to get involved. High School is WAY different than college. You do not have your parents to be there to make you meals, do your laundry, wake you up for school, and make sure all your work is done. I have to study much more than I had to study in high school because everything is not so easy anymore. Not only would I say to change my study habits but I would also say to get involved in the university. I didn't get as involved as I would of liked to. Getting involved makes the transtition much easier. You make so many new friends and you learn the ins and outs of the university.
