What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Megghun

One of the main things that I have recieved from my college experience is the need to for professionalism; as well as the need to know as much as one can within their desired field of study. Once a person has left their school of choice they will be on their own within the world so one must know as much as they can to be successful. It has been valuable to attend Aurora Universtiy for the fact that it is a small private school and if I ever had a question I knew the professors were approachable and would have some idea who I am. It also has been valuable for the fact that I know many of my professors have taught within the field they are teaching upon, so have some practical experience they can share with their students. Practical experience helps me personally better understand an experience.

College is not just for the sole purpose to obtain a career. Some people may say, "Go to college so that you can get a good job and get paid alot," but thats not the main purpose of college. College is about preperation for life and learning how to learn so that you can be the best person that you can be. I have learned that it is not about skimming by all of the mandatory classes but yet to take liberal arts classes for the sole purpose to learn new things that you do not already know. By learning new things you can learn to connect ideas and create new ideas that can help you later in life. The world is changing and as a student I need to learn to adapt to those changes. Me and my classmates are going to be the future of this beautiful country and we need to step up our game. College has been very valuable for me to attend because it has opened my eyes to the wide variety of things that I have yet to learn. It has shown me what I have been missing and need to improve on.

Rachel

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience that is probably much different from other students my age. College has taught me to be more outgoing. I started out at a community college where it was hard to walk around without seeing someone you knew. This year I transferred to a four year school and it has been a huge adjustment to me. I know no one at my new school and that has made it very hard for me. At my first school, it was easy to just go through classes because you knew that once you left the room you would see a friend. Now, I go a whole day without knowing anyone. Being at this school has taught me to be open to others and show who I am. Learning this now, will help me throughout the rest of my life.

I always knew I was going to attend college. When I was 5 years old I knew I was going to go to college. I did not know what it was or where I was going to go, but it was glamorous and I was going to go to college when I grew up. Deciding to go to college is a big decision and there are pros and cons with this decision. To me, going to college was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I will be in debt and I will be digging my way out after I graduate, but the benefits definitely outweighed the risks. In deciding to go to college I have given myself an advantage in the job market and I will be able to get interviews and jobs that someone without a college degree would be turned away from. Because of my college experience I have been given experience that will be vital to my future success.

Lakevyia

This would be my first year in college and I must say that my experience so far is incredible. I love attending college because I have the oppurtunity to increase my chances of being a professional in the field of criminal justice, in which I am studying. I have gotten an education thus far that is paramount to me. I dont ever consider attending college as a detriment because I know that in the long run it will pay off. Getting a higher education is very valuable to me, and i would never have the thought of relinquishing it! When I receive my A.A from Miami-Dade I wish to further my education by attending the University Of Central Florida (UCF). I have gotten wiser and more responsible out of my college experience, and I believe thats why it has been valuable for me to attend!

I have learned alot while in college. I feel that not only have I gained more knowledge to help me out in the world, I have also met some really wonderful teachers and made some lifelong friends. I feel that college has really made me a well rounded person. College has also boosted my self esteem as well as my self worth, it has made me feel that I can accomplish anything in life that I put my mind too.

Stephanie

By attending college I feel like I have been able to expand my capabilities as a student and also as an active member of society. I have been able to take many diverse classes in different areas of study, and taken part in various community projects presented by the schools I have attended. Waubonsee Community College and Aurora University have both presented me with influential teachers in my Elementary Education major and have been able to increase my desire to teach my future students. Through their guidance I have been able to learn many new teaching tricks and techniques which will be valuable to apply to my future classroom. Also having small classroom sizes, I have been able to learn how to work effectively with my peers, and use their ideas to shape and influence my own beliefs. By attending college I feel as though I am preparing my abilities to instruct and influence future students to be interested in continuing their educations. I have greatly valued the education I have been presented and hope that I too can help students be excited about gaining knowledge every day.

One valuable lesson that I have learned at college is that you make your own education. If you are truly passionate about learning, then there is nothing that can stop you from learning. In one class that I took, reading the book was suggested but not required. I noticed that a lot of students did not read the book, but I thought it would be helpful to really understand the materials. In that class, I received an A while a lot of the other students did not. I left the class with a greater understanding of the material than I imagine others did. I think that it is important to make you own education with the resources (textbooks and teachers) that you are given. I believe that it has been valuable to attend to achieve my dream. I want to become a dentist and I need to attend school, as well as dental school, to reach this goal. College is valuable to attend to meet the career requirements that many wish to achieve, and also is valuable in allowing one to reach his/her maximum educational potential.

Jessica

I have gotten many different aspects from my college experience. One of these experiences is learning that you can not let troubles with friends prevent you from achieving sucess. If someone lets that get in the way of their main goal; which is to graduate and make something of yourself, than it not only prevents this success but it also puts the funds and effort to waste. Another experience that I have gotten is college has given me a sense of self, because I am not worried about the amount of friends that I have which has given me time to self reflect, which makes me a stronger and more independent person. This two aspects of my college experience have been valuable to me because, it has taught me to stand a part from the high school atmosphere. In other words, it has helped me mature faster and taught me to be a bigger and better person.

Rich

I am truly thankful for being able to experience college. I have been able to grow independently though my parents to continue to try to help. This has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of what it takes to be a live on my own and find out who I am and what I want out of life which is still undetermined; but I am still working on that. I have learned that people have different backgrounds and opinions but that does not make them so much different from me. I find college extremely valuable because classes raise questions you may not think of and make you think outside yourself. With classes, clubs, athletics, and internships, I believe time management has been crucial in allowing me to stay involved and successful academically. I also learned my professors are people too and have hectic schedules just like I do. Their flexibility to take time and meet has been instrumental for my success. Lastly, networking and relationships become more important than ever as one searches for a career or future opportunities and professors are great resources for advice! Self-determination and hard work may be the most valuable of all.

Laura

I have gotten a great deal of experience and knowledge out of my college experience. I attended community college for three years before transferring to Aurora University so I already knew the do's and don'ts of studying and succeeding academically in college, but that school was in a very rural area and many of the teachers had not done a whole lot other than teach. Here, most of the teachers have been CFOs of fortune 500 corporations, been asked to speak to congress about biological issues, or have worked for professional sports teams. This has been valuable to me because it has allowed me to see that it is possible to achieve success and it has given me role-models, both male and female, to look up to who have gone far in their careers and now teach because they want to help students achieve their dreams.

Chelsea

Throughout my college experience so far, I have broadened my base of knowledge. I have learned much more helpful information that will help me throughout my life. I have also obtained great social and professional contacts, which I will be able to use for a very long time. It has been valuable to attend Aurora University because it has helped me grow as a person and begin a new life as an adult and begin to prepare for a lifelong career.

Amanda

Being at Aurora University has given me life skills that I can use. With the help of the staff I have already begun looking into possible career options and have filled out applications to possible jobs that I qualify for in my field. Without the support and the hard work from the faculty I would not know where to begin. Not only have been looking in my field, but I have been earning credits to put towards a Master's Degree. While preparing for my career I can also look into furthering my education and do it in a timely manner. It has been an easy process and I have been sucessful with making a game plan with my future. I could not have accomplished this all on my own. I had great help from the professors and my advisors and without them I wouldn't be this far along on my own.

Erica

So far out of my college experience, I realized that I can make a difference out of my life by taking a few more classes and getting that degree. This experience has allowed me to also realize that there is so much more out there the world has to offer. I don't have to work a pay check to pay check job, I can study and learn to do something that I will enjoy and want to do as a career. Without college I wouldn't of known that.

Paula

I have dealt with many turmoils while attending my college. It is not because I was not driven to be in school but because the challenge that is presented to me. My professors made is very clever for each student, as well as me, to be challanged to the point where learning different aspects in a topic was fun. Each class I have taken so far and the assignments I have been given, I was fortunate enough to learn from. Although there were times when I did not know where to turn for certain questions, I knew I had my friends, my pupils, that was always there to help when i needed it the most. The greatest aspect from attending Aurora University is the response to help, the guidance that one may need to get through school and with this, I am greatful and am still being watched by all to finish to the end.

Anna

Having completed my first semester of college, I have up to this point gained time management skills in dealing with school, sports and a part-time job. As of right now, out of my brief college experience I have learned that it's up to me whether I want to be mediocre at my future career as a social worker or if I want to be great at it. Professors will do their job and assign what needs to be done but it's up to me on how well I decide to do it. I've learned to take greater responsibility for myself. I have also gotten new friendships and good memories out of my college experience. Not only that, I have also ended my first semester with connections with professors that may prove beneficial in the start of my career. Overall, it has been valuable to attend college because I have become equipped with skills that will be useful in all areas of life, I feel as if I'm on the right path to becoming a more well-rounded person and I have met people and experienced things that I wouldn't have any other way.

Alissa

I have faced many hardships growing up. Between battling several of my own chronic medical conditions, being raised by a blind father and a mother with a traumatic brain injury, and constantly facing financial struggles, my life has not been easy. Growing up in the middle of all of this, I always felt trapped in my life. I had no control over anything, and I felt that I had to take care of everyone around me, often putting myself last. Going off to college was the best thing that has ever happened to me. By going off to college I grew my own wings. I was finally in control of my life. I became independant and in control of everything around me. During this time, I have become a mostly straight A student in the honors program, have obtained two jobs on campus (including an internship), have become actively involved on campus, and have made many great friendships. College has saved me in every way possible. This scholarship would be extremely helpful to me, as I am paying for my own education. This scholarhip would allow me to continue to grow and develop the life I deserve.

Jennifer

So far in my college experience I have gotten many things out of it. I have gotten to learn many things, see other people's different views, and experienced many different experiences. I would have to say that meeting new people at this campus has just been great, and I would not take it back for anything. The school organizations that I participate in have also made my experience great as well. It had been valuable for me to attend college, because I am making something out of myself. I am going to be something in life, and become a person with a career. Just knowing that excites me, and moves me forward in life.

Katie

Out of my time in college, I have really learned to become more organized. With having to work and attend school, organization is very key. My courses are my upper level courses that are going to be harder therefore, being able to balance work and school and still do well is a very great accomplishment that I have learned while attending college. Also, that when I really put my mind to accomplishing a task and truly believe that I can do well, then in the end I usually do well. That is one of the best lessons I have begun to teach myself because once I graduate, there will be lots of people telling me that I may not accomplish a task. However, when I complete that task after being told I could not, that to me is more rewarding!

Ryan

First, I've learned a plethora of different skills that will help me in my carreer later in life in college. I go to the Art Institute in Portland Oregon and so far I'm really loving it. However, I think the most important thaing that i have gotten and will continue getting is the networking with other individuals who are interested in the same things I am. They will be out in the world doing thier jobs as well and it's good to get to know them now so that maybe they can be a good reference later. Mybe they will get a really great job and thier boss is looking to hire someone and they are asked if they know anyone who can do the job, and they refer me to thier boss. It's not what you know, its who you know.

Melissa

My college experience has given me a fresh perspective on society and the problems in the world we live in. As a social work major, I have had my eyes opened to the many inconsistencies within the government, and its unwillingness to help those that are suffering the most.

Ashley

The best part of my college experience was that it was not like most colleges are portrayed in the cinema. In movies, they always show students partying on campus, binge drinking, and all kinds of other social chaos, but that was not the kind of experience I was looking for. I was able to go to a college that was similar to my High School; small classrooms that allow a personal relationship with the professor. My experience has been valuable because I know when I apply towards a job within my chosen career, I will have many options available to me because I was able to receive the help I needed to maintain my double major of Criminology and Psychology. While I know I am going to be a wife and mother before I start my career, I am confident about my academic experiences and know that my schooling will not be wasted once I start my career. I know that I have learned the material necessary to prepare me for whatever job I choose, and all of my choices will benefit my family and myself. When I finish this 2010-2011 academic year, I will be prepared to succeed.

As attending colleg i have become more independent. In High School we have teachers there helping us they are there everyday. In college I learned that one is responsible for all the assignements and for all the work. I am currently taking online classes and what i do is up to me the teacher only posts the assignments and we have to do it if we want if we don't do it hten well we can be pretty sure to fail the test. In college not all homework is required to do, but well is good to do it becasue it helps to know what your doign when it comes to a test. While taking online classes one can become a procrastenator, but we really have to think if what we are paying for is just going to be trowned to the trash, that's if we fail the classes. So we really have to be on top of everything without having anyone after us. I think that i can say that college has made me become independent and responsible of my actions.

I initially went to college on a basketball scholarship, however I got hurt and my coach didn't like that I stuck to my faith and to who I am. I then came back home and I am now attending a community college near my hometown. I have gained a lot from the experience I had by going off to play basketball and seeing how tough it is to stay strong in your faith and not do what the majority of the other college students are doing. That experience really taught me who I am and that sports isn't everything in life. I now no longer play basketball and I am now an active member of the honors society Phi Theta Kappa. My entire college experience has made me realize what is important in life, to wisely chose my friends, and to always be true to who I am.

Kanwal

I got the educational experince and use the skills learned to volunteer and help others. After attending the college i learned that those who succeed have better life than the others just because of the education. Education is the key to new life and better future. The greatest benefit was the completion of a long term goals, and I realized that because of college that there are a lot of things I can accomplish if I want to.

Afshan

I have learned so many things from my collage experience which normally no one can learned without collage. Attending a collage is not essay but its also not impossible. Collage could helps us in choosing our careers, through collage we can find out our interest in career areas its not just that but it also help us in making our personalities better than what we are know. Little mistakes or decision can change the whole perspective of the person. In starting it might seems that collage is hard, boring and tough but as soon as you get get involed in the collage learnings, you may feel like it worth it and its true this learninga and hard working would hepls us in our future and make the person futrure nice and ambitious. It also help us in improve our skills such as public speaking through presentations, writing through assigenment and person's presentation through project; which might we can't learn at home or online studies. The last thing that seems to me is very help is meeting with other people, collage is the best place to get the ideas and share the ideas with each other.

Entering college was a tough transition that I experienced because it was in fact different from high school. I knew I had to get myself together and start taking my career and future seriously. I am currently in my second year of college, and I can honestly say that I have matured in so many areas, but mostly in resposibility and punctuality. I have learned to not miss class and to be on time, because each lecture helps you learn, and the earlier you go to class, the more time you get to prepare yourself and go over your notes before lecture. In college I have also experienced to be bold, and to not be afraid of asking for help. I have learned that it's important to make the right kind of friends, people who will help you out in classes. It has taught me to appreciate each lecture, and to get the most of it. It has been valuable to attend college because I've gained knoweldge, experience dealing with people, but most of all, because it made me realize how crucial it is to study for a better future.

Erica

I have recieved multiple experiences from Aurora University. For starters, the entire atmosphere of the school is amazing. I attended a community college previous to AU and everytime you walked out the door there were students smoking, talking about how they dislike their class/teacher, and already planning thier weekend of no work and drinking. It is exact opposite here, you walk out and there are two strangers that have a class together asking eachother questions about an assignment or students eating lunch on a bench or in the grass between classes. I have recieved the college experience of being on my own, learning new concepts and ideas, and having the support of staff and peers whom I had just met last year. I have established friendships that will last longer than "a buddy in class to drink with" and have been able to expand my career opportunities. Aurora is valuable with providing opportunities, activities, and discoveries along the way to help in develop each individuals future.

Erin

I have finally found that learning can be fun, and am now passionate about what I am in school for.

Mary

The RN-BSN Program at Aurora University has been a challenging and rewarding journey. It has allowed me to appreciate the Evidence-Based Practice as nurses have become accustomed to, to practice safe and qualitative medicine. It has shown me that nursing is constantly changing and that nurses need to participate in the enviroment around them. Nurses need to become mentors to the future RN's and guide them in critical thinking, safe and responsible practice. It has also shown me when things need to change, research based evidence will help change the practice, enviroment or standard work flow. It has encouraged my children to want to participate in advanced education to make their future a better place to be. The RN- BSN program was a stepping stone to my future goal, which is to become a clinical educator and bedside nurse. It has taught me leadership skills to affectively teach others. Learning is a never ending journey and we should all embrace the adventure for as long as we possibly can.

Erica

By attending college I have figured out who I am! If I had not attended college this last year I would not have the confidence that I do know. I would still be the insucure girl that I was when I graduated from high school. By having the change to move out of my house and have to make decissions on my own I got to shape and build a life that I wanted. Everything that I had learned up to last year was know up to me to put to use. It forced me to figure out what I wanted and if I wanted it enough to get it. And I do!! I want to be a vet and that is a lot of school but I want it. I think that if everyone got the chance to attend college then we would live in a different society. I learned things that I would never have learned staying home and just working. I learned skill that will help me with the rest of my life!! It was an experiance I wouldn't give up for anything. I am a better person because of my college experience!

Rachel

Like at every school my experience with AU has had its ups ands downs- but at Aurora University I have been able to learn through the down periods. For example- the chemistry course I have compeleted this spring semester has helped me realize that eventhough I really did not want to take cemistry, I really needed to. I felt didn't think that I needed nordid I care much for chemistry. My professor Monica Khural showed me that chemistry is all around me. My body could not function properly without things like trace minerals and cofactors. I had believed that being a nurse had nothing to do with chemistry, but actually being a nurse deals with mainly chemistry! If I hadn't taken this course what kind of a nurse would I have become? Definately not a good one. So, thank you Professor Khural, thank you AU for opening this door to becoming the best nurse that I can be. Thank you! I am very honered and pround to have learned from this experience, I am greatful.

In high school, one is graded on what they do as opposed to what they know. Meaning that grades are primarily based off homework, projects, classwork, attendance, etc. In college, however, things are completely opposite. One's grade is based primarily off what they know, meaning their academic excellence is based off quizzes, tests, lab tests, lab exams, etc. This was a big transition for me because all through high school I was told things like, "As long as you do the homework, you'll pass", and I quickly learned that this was not how things worked after senior year. One must study, take good notes, and prepare themeselves for thest and quizzes to fully comprehend the material. Thus, if I were to talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to start getting in a better habit of studying and really understanding all the material, instead of doing classwork and expecting to retain information that way. This would have prepared me for college, helped me better study habits, and help me retain more information from high school. In college, it is vital to retain much information, as it will be handy in a career someday.

Jordan

Traveling back in time would be an ideal dream for me. I would love to go back and see myself as a high school senior. In high school I was percieved by my classmates as the classic shy girl who always did as she was told. I never came out of my shell and let my classmates and teachers see the real me. I'll take you back to the beginning of my senior year in August of 2008. A future version of me would look at myself and lend the advice to go out with a bang. I'm sure I would just look at my future self and just give a wrinkled eye brow and have a confused look upon my face. However, the advice I would choose to give about making the transition from high school into college would be don't hold my cards so close that I do not let strangers and future friends see me for who I really am. All in all, the advice I would give is come out of my shell, make new friends, enjoy the expierience and let people see the person that all of my friends see me as.

Simone

Knowing what I know now about college life I would advise any high school senior to regard ones education as an overall learning experience not solely as a means for obtaining a job upon graduation. Successful completion of a degree program is important, but what is most imperative is that students become critically discerning, thinking individuals who know how to articulate themselves verbally and through written communication. If a student cannot think critically and does not how to effectively communicate their thoughts or viewpoints to others then they will be at a disadvantage no matter what occupation they decide to pursue. A well-rounded approach to education is vital to the overall and continuing success and growth of a student.

Deb

I would tell myself not to rush into life. Don't get married so young, don't wait to go to school. Appreciate the ease of life as it is right now and take full advantage of it before responsiblities take over you life. I would say you will never regret going to college but one day you will regret not going. No one has ever said "man do I wish I had never gone to college". I would remind myself that if you do the work, school is easy. All it takes is a little time and dedication.

Kaitlyn

As a High School Senior, I was enamored with the thought of going away to college in far away locations. As a soccer player, I traveled around the country for tournaments and was able to visit many campuses along with my teammates who were also looking for schools to attend. In retrospect, my advice to myself would be to be to consider schools that fit your career path first, and then location second. I have found that the school that best met my needs also happened to be the one that was close to home, and a great value, too!

Susan

I would tell myself to through away my television set and make sure that I did more reading of assignments than watching tv. I would also tell myself that I am not the most intelligent person in the world so I should not expect passing grades to come without a lot of hard work. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt to accomplish something, sometimes some people do need to repeat cources in order to graduate. Do not give up on a college degree if you have difficulty in one or two classes. Do not be afraid to ask for help from a professor or tutor if you need it. Professors are in their career to help people not hurt people. Asking questions in class not only helps you but probably someone else in the class also. Last but not least think more carefully as a senior in high school about what you would like to do for your career then ask someone who is in that field about the field of work.

Adam

Adam, I know college seems like it will be taxing in so many ways but you will do fine as long as you demonstrate your abilities as a student, a leader, and a friend. When times become hard, reach out to professionals, whether it's mom, dad, or professors and counselors. You can achieve anything you set your mind at Aurora University as long as you excel as a student and a human being.

Tessa

When entering into college, no matter what, you need to try and get involved in as many clubs and activities that you can because once you open up and meet all different types of people your college experience will be much better. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there to make connections with others becuase the friends you make in college are the friends that you will keep for a lifetime. Try to be as active as you can and also take your studies seriously, but do not forget to have fun along the way also.

Melissa

I would advise myself to open up more to new people and new activities. When I began my freshman year, I was too scared and I held back too much. My fears kept me from what could have been very valuable experiences.

Ana

I think I would have told myself to do better in school but also to have more fun. Doing better in school would have gotten me ready for the world of college. Well maybe not completely ready because I don?t think anything could get you ready enough. Instead of slacking off a lot to try harder. But also I would have told myself to go out more and have fun because once college starts you don?t have as much freedom as before. But the main think I would have told myself is to get out of the habit of procrastination.

Cassie

Take as many fun classes as possible. Things that you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to take in college, take them in high school. So long as you have your gen-eds and a good GPA you'll be fine. Even if you end up in community college because you couldn't get scholarships, thats a better way to make the transition than to throw yourself into a 4-year university. You get another chance to explore and really finalize your decision on what you want to do. Just try not to take 4 years doing it...

Karen

Don't blow High School off it really does count and work for you if you strive to do your best.

Norma

To not blow off school and study harder. I would go on to school and not get pregnant first; going back to school when one is older is quite difficult. Although I was quite committed to getting my degree when I first started, I was older than most of the students, and could not identify with all the younger ones. I had kids myself, so therefore, I couldn't just take off and party and have a good time as all the ones who weren't as committed as I was about getting their degrees. When I was a junior in high school, I had tentative scholarships at both OS and TA&M, two of the best vet schools in the nation. But I've got two gorgeous kids out of it, and four gorgeous grandkids, so I guess everything happens for a reason.

Kevin

Start as early as possible when looking to network with people in your field. Additionally, start as early as possible (even in high school) when seaking jobs and experiences related to your future field of study and career path.

Nicole

If I were back in high school and could give myself advice about college life I would have told myself to learn all I could now in high school because you will need that knowledge in college. I also would advise myself to act like myself and to be open to new people, experiences and ideas. The easiest way to make friends is to be vulnerable and throw yourself out there hoping they like your personality and that they want to be your friend. Making friends in college is easy as long as you put an effort toward it.

Tessa

You need to be very social when going to college and try to get involved with different groups and really come out of your shell. Beleive me it will really be worth it in the end. Also take school very seriously, but leave room for fun too!

Mary

stay focused and prioritize. School is most important, but it is vital to go out an have fun in order to stay sane. Get involved and make new friends. Do not be afraid to be yourself. Speak up in class and defend your beliefs, but make sure to remain open-minded all the while. challenge yourself. Strive to be the best but don't expect perfection. Keep your chin up in hard times and keep moving forward. Life will take you where you are meant to go, just make you steer clear of the hassels and keep a clear mind. Overall, live life to the fullest and stay focused on the ultimate goal.

Sandy

Do not settle for anything less than you are worth. Don't be afraid to aim high, go for the big school because it's what wuld make you happier.
