Central Michigan University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Eric

The student body is mainly white, middle to upper class students. We have a large presence of suburban Detroit, which represents weathier students. Students of minorities, racially, religiously, and by way of lifestyle choices are accepted and respected.

Danny

I don't feel like any kind of student would feel out of place here. We have people here from China, Africa, Europe; all over the world. Races and religious backgrounds of all types. I've found that, as a black man, most of the people here accept me right away. Some don't, and likewise, I don't accept everyone right away either.

Patrick

I really think that most Central students come form a lot of money. I see very nice cars and very expensive clothing all over campus.

David

Apathetic. There is a handful of students that actually care to do anything good. Whether it's voting for the new SGA President or volunteering, it's only a small percentage of students who actually participate.

Shelby

There is so much do to on this campus. I have the opportunity to get involved in whatever I want to. I have found a church and Fraternity that fits my personality on this campus. The student body is generally nice to each other and it is a very friendly campus because of that.

Abbey

At Central I've seen a range of students. I've got people from Detroit, the UP, Grand Rapids, and Lansing in my classes. Everyone is pretty open and it's an easy place to be yourself without pressure. Just looking out my window I see two white boys, one with a hockey jersey, one looks like he stepped out of an Abercrombie ad. In the distance there's an Indian girl in her traditional head wrap. Diversity is at Central, so if you're looking for an all-white Christian campus, or a historically black school, this isn't the place for you.

Timmy

Involved, caring, and energetic.

Melanie

Sweatpants are everywhere in classes.

Danielle

I love the size of the student body at CMU. Most of my friends from high school went to a larger school, such as MSU or UofM, and they say that there are so many people that they feel like they never see the same person twice. Here at CMU, I often see people I recognize of have met before a few times a week. Its really nice to be able to talk about our Gold Ambassadors during Homecoming, and actually know who they are. Most of the students here are very kind and easy to talk to also.

Holly

The student body I feel are mostly from middle to upper class families.

Katie

There are many groups and activities that promote the awareness of racial, religious, LGBT, people. There are always programs being put on that deal with these kinds of issues. However, I still believe that there are those who feel unwelcome or uncomfortable in their surroundings. I also believe that once students find their group of friends, it's hard for them to step out of their comfort zone. Most students that attend Central are from Michigan, white, and middle class.

Eric

CMU's student body is very supportive of its football team.

Tony

The student body is great! It is welcoming and provides many opportunities for social networking.

Josh

The general student body is from middle-class families. Since the majority of MI's population is in the Detroit area, this is where a good chunk of the students originate from. On campus you will see students wear a variety of clothing from sweats to suits and everything in between.

Becky

The student population is not greatly diverse, although that is growing. The minority population feels somewhat overwhelmed, but overall the campus is very welcoming to everyone.

Becky

Very diverse community of students. Students wear jeans, sweatshirts, its a very casual environment. Dining halls are not different as far as tables of different types of students. There isn't much signs of groups of people--everyone is their own person and no one is stereotyped against.

Vicki

The student body of Central Michigan I believe is very close. Some people may not get along but for the most part everyone is friendly. Students can approach other students and get help or assistance from the student.

Whitney

Some people come to class dressed up and some people come to class in sweats. I feel like no matter what someone wears to class they will not feel out of place because someone else is most likely wearing something similar. From the people I've met at CMU I would say most of the students are from the east side of the state. Most of my friends I would say are not politically aware, some are active. I know I vote because my mom tells me to but I don't follow anything.

Owen

There are many groups dedicated to diversity and the university is good about making sure students feel comfortable or are able to find help if they have been discriminated against. I'm sure that all students would feel welcome at central. Most of the students are from Michigan, many are from down state.

Shelby

Most of the students at CMU come from Detroit or Grand Rapids.

Lauren

We are not a very racially diverse college, mostly consisting of Caucasians. Most students are casual in classes, wearing sweats or jeans most days. Most CMU students are from the Michigan area, there are many from metro Detroit, and close to Mount Pleasant.

Bryanna

Most CMU students are from Michigan and seem to be of a middle-class background. Many pay for their own schooling with little help from their parents. Political activity is not as prevalent as at some universities, but still has a presence. My friends are predominantly right, but I that isn't to say that the left isn't well represented.

Allie

Diversity? Ha. I'd say there isn't much.

Ryan

We have a diverse community. Not very much racially but polictically, religously, and we have a large GLBT community.

Jerry

Apathetic

Ali

I think any university will always have a very diverse student body. There's always going to be certain groups and clicks. It's just the way life goes. I don't think Central is different from any other college though in the terms of racial, religious, or different groups.

james

very deverse and i love that because you get people from all walks of life

Seth

I feel Central is really open and accepting. Theres quite a bit of diversity, in all aspects.

kelly

I think that we have a lot of different walks of life and that is one of the reasons I like CMU so much.

Samantha

I think that this school is very diverse. I haven't seen any kind of problem with race here. I also don't see any problems with students with financial problems.

Alex

I feel minoritys are not very common on this campus, but there are many groups here for them, yet they feel that we're a racist campus. I'm sorry but not many minority people apply to CMU, and those that do do not take advantage of the opportunities here on campus. I feel that the multi-cultural Greeks get away with too much and I do not think it's appropriate that they are allowed to haze their new members.

Emily

i think we have good diversity at central... most students wear scrubby clothes to class

Anja

We have many different types of people at central. Alot of people sit together and everyone is open to different cultures.

Robin

Sigma Kappa Sorority is a great Greek Organization! Although we are a social sorority, we currently have the highest women's sorority GPA, and we hope to continue this trend.

Amanda

Our student body is not very diverse which is why I feel we have so many minority groups to make minority students feel at place. A lot of minority students such as asians stick together on campus, as well as athletes. I see different types of students interacting in the class room but not really on campus.

Kathleen

I don't think that any student would feel out of place here on Central Michigan's campus. It is a very welcoming campus and the university really strives to make this campus as diverse as it can be. Also people are always very interested in learning about other cultures. Many different types of students interact every day on campus either by working on a project or when hanging out in the dorms.

Kristi

Central has an exceptional student body. There is literally a group for EVERYONE. Wither it be a social sorority/fraternity, an acedemic fraternity, a business/law fraternity, a religious or racial group, an enviornmental group, groups based on a major or minor, sports teams, etc... central literally has it all. And not only do we have it all, but everyone gets along. Most people are actually part of more then one group or club, including myself.

Kristi

I feel there is a place for everyone at Central. It has taught me not to place myself in one clique but to expand and get to know everyone.

Jennifer

Friendly. Lively. Enthusiastic about being a Chippewa. There is no stereotype that fits a CMU student, everyone fits in. Most CMU students come from Michigan; however, there is no distinction between those who are and those who aren't. There is a lot of activism on this campus, everyone's word is heard and respected.

Alyssa

Many students just wear sweatpants, sweatshirts, and jeans to class. I feel that most Central students are from the Detroit area. I feel that students are not very politically aware or active. Yes, students talk about how much they will earn one day.

Maureen

I think that the student body is very separated. A lot of students on campus are Greek, and this creates a division between people.

Chelsea

cmu tries very hard to promote diversity and work and emphasize that cmu is a diverse school. it is easy to get involved at cmu if you want to. there are students here from all over the state...its fun to hear about the UP and the west side of that state.

Vanessa

The student body at Central is filled with helpful individuals. There are many different student organizations for one to get inolved in. I myself chose greek life and it has helped me so much. I always have someone there who is interested in the same things that I am, or to go to if I need help in a class.

Felisha

Very diverse compared to what I thought it would be going into it. The classes have more cultures and backgrounds than originally expected. It adds to the learning experience and helps out a ton

Allison

My experiences w/ religion on campus would be that I attend the University Catholic parish. I dont think students would feel left out at CMU. Most students just dress how they want to class. Different studens definately interact on campus. Each of those four tables would be different groups of friends. Most CMU students are from Michigan. I dont know about the financial backgrounds. Some students are politically active. I dont konw how their views swing. I havent come across a conversation about money.

Akli

I haven't experienced any problems.

Wade

My belief in groups is that even though they preach diversity and how we all should get along, I feel that all they are doing is bring the prejiduces upon themselves because they're pointing out diversities that I feel if they were not rubbed in my face everybody would probably get along much better. I would say anybody of Hispanic origin would feel out of place at CMU. Most students seem to wear jeans and t-shirts to class, but you get alot of sweats too; you mostly see girls dressing up to go to class more. Four tables? I would guess you would mean figuratively; I'm going to say athletes, the normal student body that is divided into two groups (people who are loud and seem to be complete idiots, and people who just want to go down and eat in peace and quiet), and finally minorities, usually foriegn students whom seem to be a majority asian. Most students from CMU are from a middle class to upper class home, and are from Michigan. Like I said, mostly middle class going into the lower part of upperclass. I'd say about 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are politically aware and active. Most of these students are left-winged, but I feel the majority are just going with the "norm" because I guess it's "cool" to be liberal and "radical". I've personally never heard anybody bring up in a conversation that they're going to make this amount of money someday.

Jessica

I do not think anyone would feel out of place at this school. I think we have a very diverse student body, and I love it! Most students wear sweat pants and a sweatshirt or jeans and a t-shirt, as long as they are comfortable!

Gene

there are a variety of students here and central but it makes it more unique and everyone seems to be friendly to everyone else.

Harper

there's something for everyone here. there are many different clubs and student organizations to join and they welcome everyone. there are also so many events and activities offered that everyone should find something they enjoy. politically, i think our campus tends more to the liberal side, although there are conservative groups as well. this diversity is even seen in what people wear to class, there are those that enjoy dressing up and doing their hair and make up, and others who just throw on sweats. most students here are from michigan, but there are quite a few students from out of state and even from outside the country, especially within the athletic department.
