There is a little saying here at Emerson for freshmen: Gay by May or your money back! The same is said about smoking.

That everyone's gay and smokes everything under the sun.

The most common stereotype is that we're all artsy freaks with purple hair and crazy outfits.

Everyone is pretentious, artsy and gay. No sports. Open minded people.

That they're all artsy/ indie/ emo/ super trendy/ film obsessed, super liberal and gay.

Emerson students are creative

Emerson kids are very artsy, smoke a lot, and are extremely ambitious. All Emerson kids think they're going to be the next big thing. Also, we suck at math and science.

Emerson students throw the label "pretentious" around a lot to diss their classmates, and I'm sure kids from other schools do the same. That label's thrown around so much it kind of loses its meaning here.

Everyone thinks that all of the guys are gay at Emerson. That is not true, although we do have a very accepting student body that allows for anyone to express their ideas and live their own lifestyle. Because we are an arts school, there is a greater gay population than other schools in the area but I think having a gay student population helps Emerson develop a unique and open-minded learning environment. Another stereotype is that all Emerson kids smoke cigarettes.

Pretentious, gay, all came to Emerson because they got rejected from NYU, everyone is from the East Coast.

They are all gay, colorful, loud, pretentious, intelligent.

Emerson College is known for its flamboyant musical theater majors, over-driven marking students, and left-leaning political students. The school itself is known for being one of the more expensive preforming arts schools with tons of tolerance and not a ton of productivity.

Some of the big stereotypes include: everyone at Emerson is gay, every student comes from an upper middle class suburban home, we all smoke, and that we all suck at math.

Emerson is a giant campus of all the losers, weirdos and outsiders from high school who didn't get into NYU. Pretentious kids who love to say, "Hate to sound pretentious, but..." There's the old motto: "If you're not gay before May, you don't pay"

There are several stereotypes placed on Emerson students. I have heard that we are all pretentious film snobs, we are all "hipsters" who try to be different for the sake of being different, and that we are stereotypical art school kids.

We're all hipsters in skinny jeans who don't like republicans or god. We support abortion, all our men are gay, and almost all girls will be fag-hags for someone at least once during their 4 years at Emerson. We don't care about sports, and we will not think you're extra cool if you play them. We're more of an Urban Outfitters type of school, rather than an American Eagle type.

A lot of people who observe Emerson from afar believe it to be full of all Hipsters, Gays and Weirdos. Although this stereotype is based is a great deal of truth, the reason the school attracts these types of people is that it is founded upon a great deal of tolerance and liberal-mindedness, making it a comfortable place for all types.

Stereotypes about Emerson College and its students from older generations are very outdated. In the past, the school has been a haven for not-so-bright, very liberal students, and was looked upon unfavorably because of that and because its location in what used to be the Combat Zone.

One of the biggest stereotypes is that we're all liberal and either gay or hipsters. Emerson is one of the places you might see people referred to as "conforming non-conformists"

One really big stereotype that it is a school with a large gay and lesbian community. It is full of rich kids

The only "stereotype" that I was ever aware of was the population of gay & lesbian students at Emerson. Since it's seen as primarily an arts school, it would only be natural for that stereotype to exist.

Every single guy is gay, every girl has weird piercings and strangely died hair. They are more interested in movies/theater than sports and societal "happenings"

There exists several stereotypes about Emerson students... basically, gay, or smoker by the time you graduate or your money back.

Emerson students: are rich, white, drama queens, homosexual, pretentious, extremely knowledgable about their chosed interests, awkward, dyed hair, in a band, no straight men.

Intellectual, cliquey, hipsters, self-absorbed, snobby, 'liberal', faggy, all different in the same way

Smokers, indier-than-thou, gay, liberal, artsy, elitist.

That we're chainsmoking, indifferent, pretentious hipsters. That the male population is predominantly homosexual.

All students are gay, mostly

They're pretentious, overtly artsy kids, who either want to become the next Wes Anderson or Conor Oberst.

The biggest stereotype is that everyone is gay but that's not a stereotype - it's basically true. I'm pretty sure 8 out of 10 guys are in fact gay :-) There is also the stereotype that a prerequisite to get into Emerson is to be undeniably awkward in high school and most likely unpopular.

"Emo" "scenester" "homosexual" etc.

Emerson students are stereotyped as being gay, fashionable, emo-type kids who are alcoholic pot heads.

It's full of pretentious "artistes" who are more interested in themselves than other people.

The stereotypes about Emerson are mostly about char-lunged supersmokers in skinny jeans, with fashion mullet haircuts and a perpetual sneer. The opposite stereotype, that students here have more money than they can flaunt at once with Seven jeans tucked into Uggs and a matching Burberry hat and scarf set, also exists. And, of course, everyone at Emerson is gay. Everyone.
