What is the stereotype of students at your school?

There is a little saying here at Emerson for freshmen: Gay by May or your money back! The same is said about smoking.

Emerson students throw the label "pretentious" around a lot to diss their classmates, and I'm sure kids from other schools do the same. That label's thrown around so much it kind of loses its meaning here.

Everyone thinks that all of the guys are gay at Emerson. That is not true, although we do have a very accepting student body that allows for anyone to express their ideas and live their own lifestyle. Because we are an arts school, there is a greater gay population than other schools in the area but I think having a gay student population helps Emerson develop a unique and open-minded learning environment. Another stereotype is that all Emerson kids smoke cigarettes.

Emerson College is known for its flamboyant musical theater majors, over-driven marking students, and left-leaning political students. The school itself is known for being one of the more expensive preforming arts schools with tons of tolerance and not a ton of productivity.

There are several stereotypes placed on Emerson students. I have heard that we are all pretentious film snobs, we are all "hipsters" who try to be different for the sake of being different, and that we are stereotypical art school kids.

We're all hipsters in skinny jeans who don't like republicans or god. We support abortion, all our men are gay, and almost all girls will be fag-hags for someone at least once during their 4 years at Emerson. We don't care about sports, and we will not think you're extra cool if you play them. We're more of an Urban Outfitters type of school, rather than an American Eagle type.

A lot of people who observe Emerson from afar believe it to be full of all Hipsters, Gays and Weirdos. Although this stereotype is based is a great deal of truth, the reason the school attracts these types of people is that it is founded upon a great deal of tolerance and liberal-mindedness, making it a comfortable place for all types.

Stereotypes about Emerson College and its students from older generations are very outdated. In the past, the school has been a haven for not-so-bright, very liberal students, and was looked upon unfavorably because of that and because its location in what used to be the Combat Zone.

The only "stereotype" that I was ever aware of was the population of gay & lesbian students at Emerson. Since it's seen as primarily an arts school, it would only be natural for that stereotype to exist.

The biggest stereotype is that everyone is gay but that's not a stereotype - it's basically true. I'm pretty sure 8 out of 10 guys are in fact gay :-) There is also the stereotype that a prerequisite to get into Emerson is to be undeniably awkward in high school and most likely unpopular.
