George Mason University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Luke

Self-focused and not to terribly interested in their classmates.

Rory

Not the brightest apples on the tree, but generally very friendly. A couple of real characters can be found on campus; inevitably (assuming you live on campus at least a semester) you'll make some remarkable acquaintances. I only wish everyone was smarter, more passionate.

MARJORIE

Many of my classmates were very polite and willing to learn.

Jessica

Classmates here at George Mason University are the most sincere, caring and helpful people in the world.

Embry

The students do not seem to be very engaged in each other or the teacher for that matter. Most class time is usually spent texting on phones because the lectures are extremely boring or are to difficult to understand.

Paula

They are usually focused and active in their work.

Daniela

my classmates are friendly but focused.

Blake

Fun and interesting.

Katherine

My classmates are unbelievably friendly. I have never had a class where someone did not say hi to me on the first day. Everyone like to have discussions about what we learn in class and everyone gets together and studies outside of class. There is always someone willing to help is you ever feel like your falling behind.

Michelle

Most of my classmates are focused and know where they are going.

Andy

George Mason is widely recognized for being one of the most diverse student populations, and this fact is more than a statist. GMU host nearly every variation of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and nationality. There are frat boys, sorority chicks, artsy kids, political activists, jocks, and nerds. As on any college campus for first year students, it may take a while to adjust and find students with whom you "click", but with a variety of student groups on campus, it should not be difficult to find fellow students with common interests.

Owen

The student body is pretty respectful to each other. There are so many different kinds of people at Mason that it's hard not to be able to find where you belong.

Heather

GMU is so diverse, that I don't think anyone could possible feel out of place. There is a student club for just about every interest, and if it's not yet been formed, it is fairly easy to form one. This may sound like students segregate themselves by interest, culture, or class, but that's not entirely true. Most of the clubs work together to host events, and are encouraged by student activities to do so. A majority of the students are in-state, but people come from all over the world to attend Mason.

Jess

Two words: very diverse. I think having a diverse campus is better for the intellectual environment. With diversity comes many different opinions and ideas. No one would or should feel out of place here. Students come from all over the world, but a lot of them also come from VA and the surrounding cities around Mason.

Tim

Most students are either high school rejects thinking they are cool because they goto a school where no one wants to go, or the students don't speak english.

Tiffany

GMU is very diverse. There are tons of different languages being spoken in Ciao Hall every day. Everyone is accepting of the diversity. Honestly, you can't be unaccepting because the diversity is everywhere!

Claire

Like I said before, there is no "typical" student at George Mason University. We have Democrats and Republicans, activists and pacifists, those that pay their own way and those who have some help from their parents. The general atmostphere of campus is fairly calm, but open things to a controversial subject and no one will hesitate to speak their mind. Students here understand what a college education can do for them and, for the most part, are excited to do what it takes to get that degree!

Bevan

GMU is a very diverse campus so nobody should feel out of place. We have people from all races, religions, economic class, and many LGBT students. When it comes to politics, however, people are defintily apathetic and the average students seems to be either moderate or towards the left.

Jordan

Eben though i feel the students here are really connected I also feel like they could stop the cliques somewho. I also want them to increase student feedback more, all students in this campus have a lot to say.

Sara

My experiences with social racial groups on campus have been very positive and I have seen many people not from the particular race of the club come to events and participate. Most students wear jeans t-shirts and GMU clothes to class. Once in a while I see people dressed up. There are various financial backgrounds, most of the people I have met are middle or lower-middle class. Most students are from around the area but there are a lot of out of state people. Different types of students do interact, but it is a little bit like high school where people tend to stick with people similar to themselves.

Tate

There are many diverse groups of pple here, and I feel good about this, since I am an international student. If you are a true American, love the countryside and not the city, then you might feel out of place at GMU.

Emily

I don't think any kind of student would feel out of place at Mason. There are so many groups and organizations that students can get involved in. I chose not to get into many school related activities but I know they're there if I change my mind.

Alex

The student body at Mason is as mixed as it gets. Though I have noticed Soraroties and Frats trying to stick together, people at mason do make an effort to get to know the other person.

Scarlet

GMU's student body is extremely diverse (one of the top 5 most diverse in the nation). Walking around through the Johnson Center (the main building) while classes are in session is like walking through an international airport. So many different languages can be heard at once. I've never seen or felt any racial tension and people are mature enough to appreciate different ethnicities.

Gene

GMU students have some of the best energy I have ever experienced. Being a big school the need to stand out is great, and come basketball season the school will be getting pumped, hoping for another run at the final four.

Jordan

Amy

alway something going one, very diverse group, but very very clique-y

Jessica

Mason is incredibly diverse. There are people of every size, shape and color, seriously. Religions, races, genders, EVERYTHING. Dont be afraid to come to mason cause you wont fit in, theres someplace for everyone.

Alicia

GMU is a very diverse place, you can here ten different languages just walking around campus to get food.

Renee

Mason is "known" for its diversity. However, a lot of students would say that that diversity does not affect them very much. Unless you are part of intercultural clubs or have a really dialogue-focused class, people pretty much just stick to themselves. It all depends on who you talk to when you first come here how much diversity will really affect you. Like I said before, you'll find all kinds of people here, so it just depends on whom you find, whom you click with, and whom you stay in contact with.

Alex

I have found that at GMU making friends to hang out with can be quite difficult. A large part of the student body commutes, so it is kind of hard to get to know people from class outside of class. So you are basically stuck with meeting the people in your building at first -- this of course leads to meeting others over time, but if you don't get along with your roommates it can make it difficult. Clubs are a option as well, but if you are like me and don't have time with classes, it makes it even harder. It does happen though, it just took longer than I would have liked.

Harper

The campus is extremely ethnically diverse. Students at Mason are very friendly, and you may make friends with someone whom you might have never imagined. No one would ever feel out of place.

Kelly

I have not had much experience with the student body other than classmates because I am a commuter and I do not spend much time on campus when I do not have class. I do not think that any one person would feel out of place because there is always some place for them to fit in. Most students are from out of state or Northern VA.

Carlos

N/A

Hillary

NO. Every class sticks with themselves and don't intermix or talk with one another unless forced too in a class. Students are politically aware and active, but to the degree that they have no idea what they are talking about. Ignorance is a great thing!

Niki

the most predominant aren't taking interest in on campus issues. commuters just come and go. not enough enthusiasm in the kids attending classes/university.

Wade

The GMU student body is INCREDIBLY diverse! Which to me is an amazing and awesome experience. Just walking down the sidewalk from one class to another you may very well hear at least 2-3 different languages being spoken and you definitely see people who come from all over the world.

Lorie

I dont know enough to talk about this one.

Hanna

I think that for the most part the GMU student body is the most tolerating student body or a group of people i've come across.

Kelsey

*Though the GMU student body is very diverse, the different groups typically stay within their own groups *most of the students financially are well-off, its hard to find very many people in the same poor boat as me *politically, students are all over the place

Carson

Mason has students with a lot of diverse backgrounds. It's like having a college that feels similar to the United Nations.

Jimmy

I have not experienced any negative social interactions with other students here at Mason. Diversity is welcome here.

Paul

Too many uppity kids.

travis

friendly students

Lisa

GMU is very diverse. Even if one doesn't speak english, they can always find someone who is in the same position and who speaks the same language! They travel in packs, actually and there is usually at least one of them in your class. Because of its diversity, GMU presents many organizations who boast their ethnicity. We even have international week every year where students get a taste of different cultures. What do most students wear to class? Umm, GMU hoodies/t-shirts with GMU sweatpants/basketball shorts and GMU flip flops... as if we don't know what school you attend, please. GMU is a very unfashionable school except for the small percentage who actually care what they look like and make the effort to look good.

Megan

No one would feel out of place here at mason. There are soo many different clubs, groups, religions, ethnicities and interests that there is something for everyone.

Roxie

liberal, diverse, informed about cultural movements

Kat

Very diverse, most of the ethinic groups tend to stick together though and theres not much interaction between them that i know of.

Quinn

GMU's Students are very diverse and from different countries but they are not open to talk to other people such as Native American ( White ) or African American espeically Black.

Mike

We are a very mixed school. Lots of students from all different places, ethnicities, styles, and likes. Everyone is open, i've met so many students with so many different backrounds.
