George Mason University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Hayley

I feel this school is diverse and that's great but i think because it is so diverse it's hard for people to come together for causes such as sporting events and school pride. I feel that since most students commute here there is a lack of pride because they come to school to get a degree not for the whole college experience which is think GMU should try and strive more towards becoming.

James

the student body is amazing, lots of diversity. you learn a lot about different cultures.

Callie

There's a lot of activities always going on in because the student body is very involved in the student life and social activities. In the dining hall it's a very relaxed and fun place, there isn't really any designated area for anyone--you just sit where there's an empty table, which can sometimes be hard to find. Most GMU students are from all over the place, and there's a lot of commuters who live in the area.

Warner

This campus is supposedly diverse, but instead its extremely rciallly divided, in the jc, you know that the greek groups sit on the first floo,r the asians on the second and the middle easterns on the third, the schools constant concern with diversity and expanding our knowlege of other fcultures has created more bad then good,

Caitlin

This campus is extremely diverse so I do not think that anyone would feel out of place.

Josh

very diverse but generally heartless and not united unless its basketball season

Katy

GMU is full of every type of person, and no one would feel out of place here, they would find a group. People dress causal for class, jeans and a tee, or sweat shirt. I'm not sure if didnt types of students interact, I know that the athletes usually stick together. Yes students talk about how much they'll earn one day to pay off these huge debts we've dug ourselves into.

Alex

Because the school is SO diverse with ethnicities and religions, there is alot of room for potential racism and religious conflict. I have definitely run into anti semetic people here at mason, but were only anti semetic because of their world views and what they were taught growing up. I personally have a lot of friends with different backgrounds because I am a worldly person. But I am also friends with people who are against people from other backgrounds, just because they arent white.

Ryan

Won't accept Greek life.

jackie

There are very diverse groups here at mason and provides for a great learning experiene, and you also learn to accept other cultures where as other colleges you would not get that experience

Alex

Being at Mason has given me a huge culture shock and has made me aware of many other ethnicities, religions etc.. It is definitely something a student has to get used to. Mason community is very materialistic as to what they wear to class and around campus.

Allison

As far as student body goes, we are really open. I'm a lesbian and have never had any problems with it on campus, we even have a whole Pride Week. I feel like everyones really different, but thats also okay with everyone else. No one really seems to be ostracized. Overall we're a pretty liberal school, so the republicans may have a hard time sometimes. We have a lot of International students. Overall, we're kind of segregated in terms of types of people, but I don't think we're any worse than other schools.

Ashwin

ISA and HSC rocks.. :D

Mel

No clue

Sasha

I think there are many diverse groups on the mason campus and that's awesome! I'm not sure what kind of student would feel out of place, I would say someone who doesn't know many people which is common with transfer students especially. The more people you meet however the more you feel at home and this is common in any college.

Lee

Because of Mason's diversity, people of all different backgrounds are constantly interacting with one another. Mason prides itself on being diverse, thus we have events such as Pride Week, International Week, and Welcome Week. Many of the students at GMU are very politically aware and express their views through events like debates.

Kathleen

George Mason is really diverse and we have a variety of students. I don't think anyone would feel out of place here, unless they can't handle a lot of traffic/commotion. Most students tend to stay within thier own groups, but there is no animosity between groups. Money is a big discussion on campus, because this is such an expensive area to live.

Maria

Mason is a very diverse school having students from all over the world and even though, you still seem to see every race hanging out with their own. It's great to be able to see all the diversity, but it would also be great to see some unity within these groups.

Gene

Most students are respectful and nice, and the others never go to class anyway so they don't matter. There are tons of groups to join on campus, certainly one for everyone! Since Mason is such a laid back school most kids just rock whatever, but of course there are always brand whores around. As far as politics go I find most of my peers to be either uninformed or underinformed on most issues, and certainly most students and professors lean to the left on political issues.

Brittney

I would say from the people I talk to most students are from Northern Virginia: Stafford, Fredericksburg, Fairfax, the list goes on. I mean I have students from other states; however, they are far and in between. To take this idea further, my roommate freshman year was not from another state or even another town. We did not know one another previously and we did random roommate selection; yet, I end up in na dorm with a girl from my hometown and went to my school rival high school. Also, I knew her sister. Do they not want us to interact with people unknown to us?

Caroline

Being so close to D.C. Mason has a lot of diversity. There are some many different backgrouds and organizations for all of them. Because of the location and the commuter aspect there are a lof of upper-middle class backgrounds, which can come across as pretentious. The campus is very active in politics, again because of the location. All political views are represented though clubs. The school (although more liberal) has a fair amount of student support from all sides. Since Mason has a larger commuter population this isn't a campus where you find students wearing their PJ's around. Some students work during the day and will come to class wearing business attire.

Erin

There are a good number of clubs to join on campus and sports are a big deal. There are a wide variety of students here and so some show up dressed up to class and others in sweats. It's the person's preference and no one is looked at funny for their clothing choice. Most GMU students are from Maryland and Virginia. Most come from middle class backgrounds and there are a good number who are politically aware especially with DC around the corner and Bill Clinton actually came to speak in the JC this year.

Bill

Its a real diverse campus. students wear anythign from sweats to suits to class. all types of students interact. Athletes, frats, sororiety, random. most students are from VA or NJ

Andy

The student body is really diverse and makes quite a big deal of the fact. Most of the students talk about how much money they earn but also most don't seem to want to leave the area.

Amanda

There isn't a specific person that would feel out of place because there is so much diversity. Most students wear jeans to class. Most GMu students are from Virginia, and i have also met alot from New Jersey and Philly. Students don't discuss how much they'll earn. The dining hall's are okay, the salad bars are good.

Erika

I'm not involved with any groups on campus

Harper

Mason's student body is very diverse and everyone seems to be accepting.

Ellie

Since Mason is so diverse, it's pretty much expected that you'll have a broad range of races, ethnicities, religions, etc. in your classes. I've experienced a little religious tension when a Christian group I was active in had real trouble trying to reserve campus rooms for meetings and Bible Studies, when other groups seemed to have no problem. The only widespread ethnic/racial/religious tension I've heard about on campus has been in regard to the "meditation space" in the JC, which basically is the place where Mason's Muslim students go to pray when they're on campus. The "meditation space" is supposed to be open to all students, but it's pretty much understood that it's the place for Muslim students. I've heard of them kicking out other worshipers when it came time for their prayers.

Laura

Are students politically aware/active? Are they predominantly left, right or center? Mason is a liberal liberal liberal campus. The students at GMU are very politically active especially since we are in campaign season, and the majority of them are on the left.

Joe

Many groups that are specific to race and ethnicity.

Kelly

YES, Students definitly talk about what they will earn one day. Alot of my friends are alumni of GMU now, and they all speak about what they make. For those who are seniors at the moment, they also tell me what each other their fields typically make. And since I am becoming a teacher in the fairfax area, I know the salary that I will be making. But thats important to know if you are going into a field just for the money or for the experience.

Patricia

For the most part, people keep themselves pretty open-minded on campus. I have had people throw out racial insults at me every once in awhile when I pass them but you'll find that sort of ignorance anywhere. I doubt diversity programs will do much to sway anyone's opinion, especially at our age.

Andy

I learned a lot about different religions and races during my time at GMU. I don't think any kind of student would feel out of place at GMU b/c this campus is sooo diverse. Students wear jeans and shirts to class, depends on the person. Yes different students interact but students of the same race also tended to join together, except when they were in Frats or Sororities because then they had to mix. You could tell that many students that went to Mason have money, or came from families that have money. Yes students are politically aware and active. Predominantly Democratic. Students talk about how much they dream to earn one day.

Lauren

I didn't have any particularly exciting experiences other than being judged for being conservative. I would definitely say a good portion of the student body is liberal and left. The area in which the university is located probably has the largest effect on this. A lot of students at Mason come from affluent families, once again something prevalent in the area. I think there is a good portion of students that are politically aware/active! It is one of the things that made me proud to be a student there as I find pro activity to be particularly important.

Laura

I'm a commuter, so I see everything as an observer.

Tarek

1. friendly relations, never had a bad encounter or situation 2. a student not open to change, tolerance, "diversity" 3. i have seen everything to anything 4. not as much as they should 5. there are two tables pushed together with a fraternity and sorority sitting together, another table has a group of girls studying (usually the same race), the last table is a mixed group of students sitting together 6. bordering or local states 7. i would say there is a large percent of students that come from a wealthy background 8. i would say about 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} are aware/active 9. left 10. i have heard more talk about winning the lottery

Alex

The campus is the most diverse place I have ever been. I live in Maine wher the population is 99{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} white. Then I moved to Alabama where everyone is very ignorant to other cultures. But my experience at GMU has opened my eyes for other cultures.

Harper

It's a diverse campus divided by cliques.

Ryan

No one feels out of place at Mason because there are so many different types of people here. It doesnt matter what you wear to class because there so many types of clothing worn by students. Wear your pjs to class, no one would care.

Chris

Have their own groups, but have help on campus. Global Nomad. Varies. Not always. Different backgrounds. White and Asian. Yes. Republicans. Yes...

Mona

I think that Mason is actually working to reach out to all groups. There's a definite growth in the acceptance of the LGBT community on campus. Race seems to have always been supported and I've never had a genuinely bad experience with anything having to do with race since I started my education at Mason. It's enlightening that there are a good amount of different racial communities and that, even though they usually are seperate on a normal basis, they aren't opposed to be conjoining or sharing with other communities. Religion isn't something I enjoy talking about and I find it shoved in my face far too often on campus. I respect everyone's rights to their belief but am completely opposed to it being forced upon others. I have refused and thrown away too many pamphlets from the Campus Ministry.

Danielle

GMU is phenomenoly diverse, I can't imagine anyone feeling out of place. There are all sorts of cultures, sexual orientations, financial backgrounds, etc.

Harper

Very diverse, but it's celebrated to a fault. Many student organizations, so something for any/everyone. Very casual to class, jeans, sweats, etc. Many students are part-time, working professionals, many with more 'life experience' and it's not uncommon to have retirees in class as a hobby.

Andy

I don't think any student would feel out of place. The student body is so diverse that anyone could make a friend or find someone they have something in common with, whether that be religion or academic major, etc. I wouldn't say there is a particular dress code at Mason. It ranges from sweats to suits.

Derek

Students are however college students act. Most talk about anything from how much they earn, to parties to school. Everyone's the typical college student.

Harper

Diverese. There are people from all over the country. There are people from all over the world.

Madison

Although racial diversity is through the roof, that does not mean the school is a huge cultural melting pot where everyone gets together and sings song about harmony and love. Pretty much everyone is from a Virginia suburb and this is their safety school. The whites hang out with the whites, blacks hang out with the blacks, etc. There's apparently a huge gay population at Mason, but it's not as open as one would think. While many students like to think they are politically active, the reality is that they most likely have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. The right-wing students like to complain that the school is to liberal while the left-wing likes to say it's too conservative, yet the majority of students are either too stupid or too apathetic to care either way, so it balances out.

Jennifer

I was not associated with any group in particular. I did notice that there was a lot of diversity on campus. The oddballs usually ate in sub 1 and all the "cool" fraternity and sorority kids ate in the JC.

Lorie

Mason is incredibly diverse which is a great thing. I do not like the crazy Cru kids though who tell you if you're Jewish, Muslim, gay, etc then you're damned to hell. I think politically, there is an even distribution of Democrats, Republicans, etc. I think there are more Libertarians that go to Mason than any other college in Virginia (which is absolutely due to our great Economics department).

Bob

There's varying religions and races. There's varying degrees of wealth too. Most students seem okay with money. It is a college though. There's tons different students. Everyone's pretty down to Earth. Everyone at Mason seems middle class.
