George Washington University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Bill

political yes, but as for myself, I did not apply to any ivy league and am not wealthy, coming to GWU on a half-tuition scholarship

Tyler

not really

Michael

yes

Jack

Mostly

Rob

No, GW is a diverse community, with students from all sorts of backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and socioeconomic statuses. Our Student Association president is Indian, our SA vice president is black, the president of the College Democrats is gay, and when the Pope came to visit DC, we saw a community of unified GW students come to welcome him. Our view of a GW student, of each other, extends beyond simply categorizations, to the character and value that each person brings to our community. As for all students studying IR and politics, though every student is intelligent and likely has some developed views with regards to politics and world affairs, the majority of students study a field outside of those two. Our medical programs are top-quality, our business school is world renowned, and we have a solid engineering program as well.

mostly although the stereotypes are byproducts of the school's demographics

Ash

No, there are a good amount of Jewish people here, but its not overwhelming and isnt a vital part of the daily life here at GW

Angelica

yes, all the jews at GW are very cocky, stuck up and love to flaunt it. Im pretty sure that half of the population at this school that isn't jewish could afford exactly what they have and more but choose not too, and if they do they do not advertise it as much as some of the New Yorkers here love to do.

Adrianne

gw is the most expensive university in the world, so the rich kid stereotype is pretty accurate

Jordan

despressingly.

Josh

Yes

Jordan

Absolutely.

Jesse

yes, the majority of the students blow.

Marissa

GW gives quite a few scholarships and there are a range of people that attend the school on different budgets and who come from different backgrounds. I've met so many people who have offered unique perspectives from their unusual upbringings and it's really opened my eyes to other cultures and divisions. As for the political junkie stereotype, GW is a place for anyone with any interest. There are plenty of people who could care less about politics and they find their place in another area of the school. While it's great for the people that love civic learning and who want to take advantage of the opportunities offered at GW and in D.C., it's not the only option.

Jerry

am from the DC metro area and I was surprised at how many people here are from the northeast. DC, believe it or not, is a southern city, but Foggy Bottom is like Long Island South. I was surprised that GW didn't have more local people. Politics and political issues dominate in the student body

Royce

A lot of people at GW do have a lot of money.

Dale

Hahaha yes. This school is VERY Jewish, and there are many open homosexuals, not that either of those are bad. However, what IS bad is the academic quality of most students, and the bureaucracy.

Harper

Its common, but there are also many other types of students, and is still a diverse school. WHen you think GW, u think these three stereotypes, but it is not too overwhelmingly prominent.

Carl

Yes and No. There definitely a lot of douche-bags on campus but there are serious students and really nice people as well.

Zach

It's about half true. There's a lot of Long Island types but the clear majority of GW is comprised of motivated, politically-minded students who are looking to make the most of 4 years in the Nation's capital.

Alexis

Not everyone is rich, there are definitely some kappas that do coke (personally walked in on them), politics are very much so there but they are avoidable and there are plenty of other things to do in DC

Christina

I would say, just as any college, there are a lot of rich people, but overall, GW's students are very friendly and there aren't many cliques.

Harper

In some cases, yes.

Greg

While alot of kids are wealthy at this school not everyone is. I know more then a few people working their way through college

Andy

Somewhat...but always exaggerated

Morgan

These stereotypes are commpletely innacuate. GW offers so many opportunities for finacial assistance for its students.

Diana

Although a large portion of GW students are from the east coast or are Jewish, the stereotypes are not accurate. GW students come from a huge range of socioeconomic, ethnic and geographic backgrounds.

Lauren

Yes

Meredith

The stereotypes are somewhat accurate. The vast majority of students, it seems, are from the northeast. Many of the kids come from wealthy backgrounds and a lot of people are materialistic, but there are also plenty of students from middle class families from all over the country that are not materialistic at all, you just have to look a bit harder to find them.

Emily

There are a lot of students here who do come from wealthy families, but there are also a lot of students who don't. There's so much variety in who you will meet from different classes, ethnicities, and religions. GW does have a large party scene, but there are certainly groups that have fun without going crazy.

sondra

I mean there are a lot of kids from the northeast and coke is the new weed but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people who don't do either as well as people who do smoke but don't do coke. Also everyone complains that people aren't that good looking.

sarah

A lot of people are rich; some are snobby; a lot are from the Tri-State area; and many are politically active but many are not. It all depends who you hang out with.

Emily

Yes

Ali

Its very easy to see the wealth that GW Students have, many do flaunt it and I find it more common here than on other campuses- however there are always the exceptions.

Claire

This stereotype, unfortunately, is accurate, but if you look hard enough you can find people who do not fit this stereotype.

Victoria

The school is definitely filled with its share of wealthy and often snobby kids. Most people here i have met have come from pretty well off families, but you wouldn't know it unless you asked. I have also found that there are many students here that are very intelligent, and some who are not. There is a big variance in intelligence.

Cameron

To some extent. I can't say that I know anybody who fits ALL of those steryotypes. But there are definately a lot of gay boys, a lot of jewish kids, a lot of jersey kids, a lot of rich kids, and being in DC it's hard not to be politically aware.

Corinne

while there are many gay guys and jewish people, they are not overwhelming, you can find the crowd of people you want at any school. in regards to the overwhelming jewish population: I am in a random quad and only one of my roommates is half jewish.
