George Washington University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Rachel

It is true that most students are upper-middle class or above, but there is a good fraction of students who are not. There is a large population from the Northeast but the national and international presence is very obvious.

Brett

yes. but you have to look around for the real people.

Sam

It's true for a great deal of students, but that shouldn't influence anyone's decision to come here! It's not at all hard to find lots of different kinds of people.

Emily

I think that there are definitely alot of gay guys at GW (not many lesbians) and that there are alot of Jews. There's nothing wrong with that. I think that there are definitely a number of JAPs as well as WASPS, but there are tons of normal people here too. Most people I know did not even apply to Georgetown. Most people applied to GW and then American as their safety. GW is completely different from Georgetown and the people here are so much nicer.

Harper

Yes

Annie

1. For the most part yes. If you don't know anything about politics or don't watch CNN most others will wonder what you're doing here. 2. There is a large population of well-to-do students here, but they don't all qualify as snobby. But, sometimes you have a hard time reconciling that you don't go to school with "normal" people.

andre

there are definitely these types of students, but 2/3 students are on significant financial aid. nevertheless, the majority of students do tend to come across as elitists and influenced by JAPs (whether or not they are) and it seems like almost everyone is from Boston, Long Island, NYC or North Jersey, and the rivalries get annoying and obnoxious.

laurel

For the most part, yes.

Lorie

YES mostly YES somewhat

Julia

Yes.

Christina

for the most part, minus the majority of snobby kids

Katy

They are definitely present, but do not necessarily make up the majority.

nicole

although there are a bunch of rich kids, you'd find them at any school. GW obviously has a lot of wealthy students, but it has a lot of kids on scholarship, too; most of the time, you can't tell them apart. GW prides itself on blending in with the city or being apart of it. Well I disagree. As soon as you walk onto campus you know it. There are students crowding every sidewalk, and street although the school would prefer otherwise. Every building is owned by GW and is classrooms, offices or dorms. The main difference is instead of having an isolated campus, one in which when you step off campus you are basically in a barren wasteland, we have one of the most influential cities in the world.
