Howard University Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Zakiya

Howard University gives no instructions on how to be a successful Howard student. It is up to students to plan and execute their own academic track. Howard provides subtle hints along the way. It bestows all students with a blank canvas, a paintbrush, one paint color, and no instructions. Students must acquire more paints and brushes to complete their masterpiece. On their peregrination to acquire more supplies, students must fight through rigorous battles relying solely on one another. Once "the dust has settled," students will appreciate every battle because it has allowed them to create a masterpiece--the Howard Experience.

Mariah

The worst thing about Howard University is the location in which it is located. Howard University is located on Georgia Ave in Northwest DC. The crime rate is very high and it is not advised to walk alone, especially at night. Locals also have the ability to walk on campus freely which I consider to be very dangerous.

The worst thing about my school is that it is very competitive. I wouldnt say being competitive is a bad thing but coming in as a freshman sometimes you can get intimidated by the upperclassmen and therefore restrain yourself from reaching your highest potential. Also my school is very large with almost 10,000 undergrad students so it can be very difficult to find where you belong and where you fit in. You have to get involved and make yourself at home.

Nicolle

The worst thing about my school is that most of the buildings on campus are fairly old. My school has been around for many years and alot of the facilities are beginning to break down. The school has to use alot of money to work on this problem. But they have begun to upgrade and build some new buildings.

Nancy

The thing I would consider the worst about my school is that the administration aspect of it is rather weak. Sometimes they can very untimely, uninformative, and not care enough about the students well being. At times, the Howard administration can seem very apethetic to how students may feel and not appreciate us as people who have a right to voice our opinion.

Tynesha

Howard University is one of the top Historically Black Institution in the United State however like most school it does has its flaws. As a freshman at Howard University i feel as that the school could do better with housing on campus. On campus housing is very difficult at howard leaving many students to go to different universities or others who choose to commute unable to fully expericence the college as a whole. Howard should work on the housing dilema.

Lamar

Probably the worst thing about my school would be the admission process. It could be handled in a professional manner a lot better. Sending out the right paperwork and material to future students and giving them that information on time.

Shanead

The worst thing about my school, is the way the administrtion handles timing. They do not update statuses, return or answer phone calls, then they blame the students.

Jordan

The worse thing about my school is the mentally that some people have when leaving here. Not every experience here has been great for anyone, but i don't think that's different from any other school. However, some people graduate focused on the bad experiences and don't give back as alumni. In the end it hurts the growth of our university and it detracts from the service and community spirit the university was founded on.

Vaughan

The worst thing about Howard would be the lack of organization within the administration building. Students are regularly given the run-around when persuing answers to simple questions. We absolutely cannot trust the workers to help. We must always check and double check to make sure things are done. Especially in the financial aid office. I know people who have spent more than 4 hours in the administration building to take care of business.

Gem

The worst thing about my school is the neighborhood that it is located in. The neighborhood isn't very safe. Students must use percaution and walk in groups when going off campus. Also it isn't wise to walk around the campus late because it is an open campus meaning that anyone can just walk on to the campus.

Lauren-Nikai

We don't have the best facilities in the world to assit us in receiving the best education possible.

Akyea

It isn't very environmentally conscious. Security is strict in the worse ways. Hard on visitors of residents, but loose tempermantly. Books are pricey. The math department.

Cassandra

The administration. Sometimes the employees working in the administration building seem t o not know what they are doing. If you were to ask them a question they may be unsure of the answer or give you conflicting information. Also, financial aid takes a long time to process your scholarships or loans.

D'Juan

In my opinion, I have had numlerous encounters with the faculty at the University. I feel that the faculty are only there to accept a paycheck and not to meet the student's needs.

Ronesha

The worst thing about Howard is that the social organizations sometimes overtake the school. A large majority of the students are looking to join fraternities and sororities, and they allow that to control their personalities and what activities they choose to participate in on campus. For example, organizations that do not have Greek affiliations have a harder time finding active members because being involved in the organization will not better that member?s chance of being accepted into a fraternity or sorority.

Shawntel

The worst thing about my school is the amount of money allotted to students. There should be more money for low-income families

Jai

They don't offer finanacial aid for students who would qualify for it at other Universities.

Toi

The housing availability & the employees in the administration building.

Linsey

Personally, due to my socioeconomic status, the worst part is the little financial aid they offer students, and how expensive everything is. I'm ready to drop out of school due to the expenses.

Rhea

The worst thing about Howard University would have to be the surrounding area. Washington D.C has a nice atmosphere, but unfortunately the negativity surround the university is what everyone sees. The poverty and drugs and local businesses need to be handled with.

Kashayia

The worst thing about my school would have to be the financial aid office. They always seem to be unsensitive to your financial aid concerns or problems. Their main goal is soley to do their job, and not to help any student with their issues.

Aminat

The worst thing about Howard to me would be the cafeteria food. I think it is essential for college students to eat well and healthy, and the cafeteria just does not offer that all the time.

Morgan

The housing selection or lack there of I should say.

Tiara

I consider the President's Board of Trustees to be the worst aspect of our school. For example, I am TV Production major and John H. Johnson gave the School of Communications 4 million dollars. We, communication students, have seen no changes in our school nor the equipment and facilities housed within it. Of course the students make due with what we have, but the mismanagement of funds directly affects the students and their survival in the professional world of their chosen field.

Nikita

The maintenance and customer service is pretty bad. The gym is inadequate.

Lauren

The dorms. You pay a sizeable amount of money for crap most of the time. I havent been in one room yet that didnt have a major problem with it.ie: heat not working, outlets not working, broken furniture etc.

Monique

The ADMINISTRATION!!!!

Naa

The worst part about our school is the on-campus housing because it is not very nice and we do not have 24 hour visitation.

Tiffany

The worst thing about Howard is that it drives you to want to be involved in something. Because of this, it is easy to put too much onto your plate. You need to be able to develop really good time management skills in order to really be successful here. Otherwise, it will be all to easy to lose yourself in all of your extra-curriculars.

Kiara

The worst thing about my school is the realtionship between the students and the faculty. When it comes to financial aid, forms get lost all the time and you may not realize it until they send you a letter with a purge date stamped on it. On this campus it is not uncommon to hear horror stories of the Administration Building. This building house the financial aid office and academic recording. Transcripts are misplaced, charges are inaccurate, and the staff is rude. It is unfortunate that this happens to students as it would be better to be courteous.

Anastasia

The worst thing about my school is the poor facilities and the administration. The faclities are old and outdated. The administrators can be rude and misplace papers frequently.

Kia

Somewhat poor administration.

Doce

Administration aren't as helpful as they should be.

Jazmyn

The administration building because at times they seem very unorganized.

Corrine

In all honesty, the worst thing about Howard University is the administration. Students are unable to receive the help they deserve without getting the run-around, encountering unncecessary negative attitudes, or being made to feel at fault for not knowing certain things. The administration's job is to provide students with the help they need to ensure a smooth matriculation through the university. The matriculation is all but smooth. The administration makes things so much more difficult than they have to be and we, the students, have to suffer. Customer service is not a priority here.

Whitnie

The worst thing at my school, i would have to say is the weather. We are located in Washington, DC; which is the eastern coast, and it's very cold. Being born and raised in the Northern coast of California, we do not experience cold winters or hot summers.

Tiffany

The worst part of Howard University is the adminitration and the way finanical aid and student acccounts is handled. The adminitration, finanical aid, and student accounts are the worse at Howard because many documents get lost, and nomorous students have problems and issues within the financial and student accounts departments.

Ayla

The worst thing about Howard University is the administration and financial aid offices. Dealing with the workers in these offices can be very difficult. Majority of the students take issue with them. They tend to be rude to students, unorganized, and unhelpful. However, the new president of the school has been asking for feedback from students and is working with the administration and financial aid offices to better serve us. I think that a training course that teaches hospitality skills is greatly needed for the employees.

Kiara

The worst thing about Howard are the facilities. I believe that as one of the top Historically Black Colleges and Universities, there should be better auditoriums, labs, and equipment for students and faculty.

Kristin

It's orgaization and administration. Financial aid isn't as abundant as it should be, administrators are rude and don't care about the students. There are always long lines for registration, financial aid, etc. The school is not as technologically advanced as it should be. There is not transparency when it comes to the monies that the school recieves/raises and the budget.

Raymonda

The ineffective, troublesome bureacracy. Every semester I, and most students I know, deal with late financial aid disbursement, unnecessary stress about housing assignments, and unresponsive uncaring student support workers throughout every department in the Administration bulding.

Blaize

The Administration at Howard University is horrible. People here do not want to see change occur; because of that, many students on this campus lose their housing, get the run-around from administration and sometimes don't even get the alloted credits he or she has earned due to incopmetence. The cause of this is "inbreeding" of staff, in which former alumni from previous years come back, and they are set in their own ways. This can become very cumbersome and leads to confrontation between students and staff. Unfortunately, this has soon to be rectified.

Julian

the Aworse thing about my school via personal exprience would have to be academic advisement. It seems that there is no cohesiveness with professors, advisors, and chairpersons; and thus no system of checks and balances to course students to assure them that they are on the right track. It also seems that they are not trained to advise in any given situation.

Shatarra

THE ADMINISTRATION AND HOUSING IS THE WORST ENTITY OF MY UNIVERSITY. A LOT OF THE STAFF IS RUDE, UNINFORMED AND DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT OUR ISSUES. IT'S REALLY HARD TO GET ON-CAMPUS HOUSING. WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH HOUSING TO PROVIDE A PLACE TO LIVE FOR HALF OUR CAMPUS.

Therese

I hate the way that they distribute scholarships. they base it on finicial need and not merit. i maintain a 3.83 and my parents pay for my sister and my brother's tution. i have to work part-time to helps minimize my students loans so that i can stay in college. too often do i know people who are on academic probation but have a full ride. i wish that the university would take into account that other finances that my parents have to deal with before they deny my request for a grant or scholarship.

Kevin

The one thing that needs the most improvement ("worst" sounds so harsh!) is housing, namely just receiving it. More students are admitted than can be housed, and If a continuing student-- like myself this year--, does not get housing through our RSVP system, it is a nail-biting experience: from March until the week before classes start we are unsure if we can get a room, unless we give up and find apartments somewhere in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, which are pretty expensive even with a roommate and not always safe.
