Indiana University of Pennsylvania-Main Campus Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Lindsay

to an extent

Andrea

While this may be the only school SOME people got into, I find this inaccurate. I came to IUP based solely on the beauty of the campus, the strength of the programs I was interested in, and the really affordable cost. About the drinking aspect. Though you may not come to IUP for this reason, it will because a part of your life if you want it to-just like any other school.

Chris

There is partying, but what school doesn't have that. Its not excessive and should really not have anything to do with your decision.

Leo

the rumor is true you can drink easily at IUP if you want to. But the reverse is also true, there are many things to do, and people to hang out with that do not involve drinking at all. I have never been forced to drink, or embarased if i didn't drink. IUP is a campus where people have fun but also enjoy learning and achieving what they can.

Some incidents have happened but i think that the media does not like IUP that much. I think IUP parties more that most other campus's but it's not as bad as it is portrayed from the past years. I think IUP gives a great education and if my friends from home belittle me because of my education at IUP, I tell them that I am graduating from one of the top 50 business schools in the US and that I am more involved than they are with my extracurricular activities

Cheyenne

Parties are sweet, but not out of control. Education side....high class university, not a "dumb" place by any stretch of the imagination.

Denny

i guess

Jessi

All colleges are party schools, so yes, this is accurate.

Daniel

I would say for the most part, we party about as much if not less than most universities. Perhaps it is the lack of an active, exciting community in Indiana, PA that makes people think that all we do is drink. I would think the same thing if I were a student visiting from a university in a city where there is more to do.

Jon

There is not a shortage of parties and one can find a party on any night of the week, if they are looking hard enough. However, students are able to live on or off campus and complete the work needed to be done for class. IUP is in the middle of nowhere if you come from a place that grants you access to almost every need imaginable. There are not a plethora of stores or restaurants but for the most part, you can get by.

Charlie

No not all of them. IUP students do party hard, but not has hard as many think. The Greeks are in the minority of the population, but are an awesome group to join. The University needs to be more accepting of them. The stereotypes of sorority girls are not accurate. We have a higher GPA than the all-women's average. We perform more community service than the other groups on campus. This past year all the sororities have raised over $100,000 for their philanthropies.

Kat

not for everyone

Tim

Yes...but every school has parties, but you can find a fair share of morons at this school.

Cody

Some what.

Nico

yes pretty much..you can find a party anywhere on campus or off anyday of the week

Lindsay

sometimes

Steve

Not really. andy school can be a party school if you make it to be one.

Whitney

They are some what. I mean a lot of people do drink. But many people are involed in on campus activies and study a lot. You see people going to class, drunk or not, they are still going to class.

Blake

yes

sara

no

Alex

No. These are relevant only to a percentage of the population and this does not take into account the lives of students who are interested in doing other activities like community service, etc.

Jenn

No, except for the peeing in public part. But seriously, IUP is seen as a party school, and there are a lot of parties that take place, but that does not mean that the students just come here to party. If adolescents simply want to spend their time partying, they will find a way whether they are in a college atmosphere or not. There is nothing wrong with going out on the weekends, as long as you are safe and know where your priorities are. Also, students at all colleges party. They find a way even if the campus is dry. It doesn't matter if it's IUP, Duquense or Ohio State, all of these colleges contain students who party. However, students just get caught more often with underage drinking at IUP because of the small town area. The cops don't have many other violations to worry about with a small town setting as they do with a more urban setting such as Pittsburgh.

Jordan

I'm sure they can be accurately applied to some students, but the same is true of students at universities all over the country. And I believe the education I am getting in IUP?s journalism department is excellent.
