What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Hunter

If you like to have a good time, this is the place for you. There is a crowd everynight of the week at the watering holes here at IUP! But if that's not your style, you can always hop in the car and take a short trip to Yellow Creek State Park and do a little canoeing or camping. If you're looking for something to do on a Saturday night and want to keep it dry, you can cruise on down to the drive-in movie theater. For six bucks per person you can see two great movies right from your car.

i cant say that i have been to any athletic events i was usually to hungover for the football games on saturdays but i do think alot of ppl go to them. sororities and fraternities seem to be really big there. i wasnt in a frat because i thouught most of them were a bunch of douch bags plus i didnt have the type of money to join one of those stupid things. the sorority girls though were a different story..it seemed like every good loooking girl was in one so i interacted with them as much as possible.

Laura

IUP has a HUGE variety of extracurricular activities. There are clubs and organizations within your major, your department, and within your personal interests. Greek Life is big at IUP, but not everyone is involved in it. There are frats and sororities based on social, academic, community service, and professional goals. As for social life, you will meet so many people in your residence halls and classes that it is very easy to find something to do in your down time. Weekends are crazy fun but there are always alcohol free events for the students that don't drink. On weekdays, you may find yourself up at 1 in the morning in your hallway talking to the people around you. There is ALWAYS something to do.

Whitney

There are a TON of ways to socialize at IUP. Clubs, sports (collegiate and pick-up), events, fundraisers, concerts, plays, galleries, movies, etc. just to name a few on-campus activities. Off-campus there are lots of restaurants, coffeshops and bars with open-mic nights, theaters, a mall, ice skating and roller skating rinks, and parks. Its hard not finding something to do. Especially when you live in a dorm and say, the second floor challenges the third floor to (insert super fun activity here). The only way you won't make new friends that will probably be like your extended family, is to lock yourself in your room and never come out. Its surprising even how many friends you make in your major let alone your other classes.

Maureen

I'm involved in both cross country and track and field at IUP. I'm going into my fourth year of it and I've grown to love it. At first it can be kind of overwhelming trying to just work out a schedule to fit everything in, but once you do it just becomes regular. I still have a lot of time to hang out with friends and study and all that too. I've met some of my best friends by doing these two sports too. If your not really into sports either, there's about a hundred other activities you can get into. I've met so many people in classes, at sports events, or parties.

Kristina

Of course, we have a pretty strong Greek Life at IUP. There's a number of fraternities and sororities to choose from. For those who are more academically oriented, there's also a large amount of academic, co-ed fraternities. I'm in two of them, myself. Every department has a fraternity, and there are also a number of academic honors, community service, etc groups. If you don't want to go out and party, there's a bus system that runs to the two malls (one of which has a movie theatre), and the plaza with a super Wal Mart in it. There's also a lot of restaurants to eat at.

Suzie

The students in the dorms, at least during the first part of the year, leave their doors open to meet new people and welcome freshmen. I made all of my friends by attending beginning of the year movie nights held in one of their dorms and through studying in the Great Hall in the early hours of the morning. On the weekends there are the trips to Wal-Mart, the theatre, and the mall to keep all the students occupied.

Alex

Fraternities, sororities and sports teams are probably the most popular groups on campus. I am involved with the women's basketball team. We are actively involved in the community and get a lot of support in return. We excel in the classroom and the court, taking PSAC Champs the last two years. We have seen a growing crowd over the past two years and hope it continues to grow.

Jenn

I've never lived on campus, so I missed out on a lot of the social life as far as living in dorms goes, but I've still made some great friends in classes. From what I have heard from other students, it's easy to make friends in the dorms. If you like being outside, there are a ton of things to do around Indiana, like hiking, biking, running, Frisbee, golf, etc. and we do have some great restaurants and community theatre groups, but if you are accustomed to the big city culture and nightlife, you might feel out of place here. One nice thing about IUP is being close enough to Pittsburgh to go there and enjoy what you might not find here, and there are a lot of other towns close by with the good malls and movie theaters students often complain Indiana is lacking. If you do like going out, Indiana has some great bars downtown, like Boomerangs, The Coney, H.B. Culpepper's, Wolfendale's and The Brown.

jena

There are a lot of community service groups I know a large number of students are involved in. Sports are another large group. I play ultimate frisbee and I love it. Thats where I met most of my friends. We are always together just having fun. There are a lot of frats and sororities, but I do not hang out with them. Homecoming is a big event during the school year, there are others but i think thats the most popular. Like I said, the school is located in a small town so there is a limit on the things students can do with out drinking. There are restaurants, coffee shops, a hookah bar, and shopping stores.

Ashleigh

There are many organizations on campus that fit anyones interests. Also, there are activities that dont involve drinking like bowling, going to the movies, ice skating, or attending the sports events for example football games and baskebtall games. Most of the group of friends I hang out with I know from the dorm when I lived there freshmen year or I met in class. When I lived in the dorm everyone left their doors open. It was a way to stop and talk to people and invite them in to hangout. We would always play games in the lounge on our floors and would go eat together. Homecoming is a big event at IUP. The parade is a lot of fun and its a way to see all the organizations that are at IUP in the parade.

Lauren

There is a huge selection of fraternities, associations, extracurricular teams, and other things to choose from. Get active. Meet people. It's a lot of fun to do! In dorms, a lot of people left their doors open when I lived in Mack. However, they tore that down for new dorms. I don't know what it is like in the suites. I have an apartment that is off campus, but right across the street from the music building and basically in my church's backyard. Perfect placement for an apartment, and it's not too too expensive. If you don't want to be in a fraternity, you don't have to be. It's fun to just hang out with friends if you like that. There are many things downtown in Indiana to do, like movies, mall, restaurants (although a majority of the ones with bars don't let people under 21 in after 8 or 9), bowling, pool, coffeehouses, and shopping. It's a great atmosphere to interact with others. I really recommend it.

Kelly

A group that I am involved with is called the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP). It is a group of student nurses who take part in activities and fundraising for IUP. As far as dorm life goes it is pretty laid back. Some students do leave their doors open so they are able to interact with people passing in the halls. Partying is prevalent at IUP, but it is no different from any other college. Fraternities and Soroities are also a big part of campus life. Some off campus activities include going out to dinner, playing mini golf, getting ice cream, or going to the mall.

KJ

Thursday night is the big bar night. Most go uptown and meet at Wolfie's or and Irish Pub called the Coney. For theatre or other fine arts there are the university producations, and the university has several fairly good traveling broadway productions come to campus. The main social life for the fall is of course Steelers football, on a home game many students go to Pittsburgh. There is always something to do on the weekend if you want to go up to Pittsburgh there is the zoo, many museums from art to science. In town there are some great nature walking areas and bike trails.

Ryan

This town outside of the school has a poor economy and little to do. Incoming students should have a car as otherwise it is hard to get around town. Parking is terrible in the town and on campus. There is a shuttle system that is unreliable and unfeasible to plan your life around, as I have tried to do it prior to having a car.

Justin

All sports you get to know alot of people but not only that but also the marching band you meet alot of people as well. We have prof. frats/soro. as well as social frats/soro. There so many places to go on the weekend being not far from pitt. downtown

Jenna

I am in a sorority at IUP, but it does not control my entire social life. Being a part of the greek community can be a positive or negative experience. Some students focus too much on their social lives and spend less time on academics. I feel that this would happen even if there was no greek community at IUP. However, for students who can manage their time wisely, being part of greek life can be a great experience which allows students to network and become involved at IUP in a positive way. I think that the town of Indiana NEEDS to have more for the college age population to do during the day and at night. This would prevent students from resorting to drinking on the weekends and week days. The town of Indiana needs more shopping, possibly an updated movie theater, an arcade such as dave and busters, bowling withing walking distance of the university, etc. I feel that Indiana, PA needs to evolve into a smaller version of Penn State's downtown area. There is much more to do there rather than drink. As a student, I know that many people do drink as a last resort of having nothing else to do recreationally here in Indiana.

Mitch

The night life is alive, and altough it's not like the old IUP, where they would have hundreds of drunk people roaming the streets, there is always something going on somewhere. You usually don't even need to kow anyone to get into different parties, just make sure you are with people you know that can watch out for eachother and you'll be fine.

Dawson

It really depends what your 'crowd' is. I spend time with the History club and Anime club, both small but with plenty of friendly people. The dating scene unfortunately mostly involves the bars.. On a Saturday night, if it isn't hanging out in the HUB, eating, or drinking, there's not all that much to do. If you're awake on 2 am on a Tuesday, you can stare at your ceiling and listen to the bar crowd returning to campus (local bars kick everyone out at 2, generally). You might try counting the ceiling tiles, or play on the internet (all of campus is hooked up to wi-fi, which is great.) Alternately, if you have a car you can go to Wal-mart or Eat-n-Park. I do like the guest speakers invited to IUP-- Last one I went to see was Dr. Devra Davis and it was fascinating stuff. If you like sororities and frats and throwing bean bags into boards with holes in them, you'll love frat row. (It would give you something to do at 2 AM on a Tuesday.)

Jeffrey

The greek life seems to be the most popular organization, however, there are lots of club and intramural sports teams that offer the same comradary with less of a commitment. Make sure your school work comes first, and once that is in order get involved.

Alaina

I hear people in regular dorms left their doors open but I lived in a suite and it was pretty quiet. Everyone kept to themselves and if the most conversation you had was hi as you were passing each other in the hall. Events are pretty nice their, good concerts, and good speakers. Their's not alot to do off campus that doesnt include drinking because its such a small town. There's usually a party from thursday to sunday. You can generally find someone to drink with any day of the week on frat row. You'll see alot of things about frat's and sororities when you first get up their cuz they recruit big time but unless you know how to balance partying and studying, i'd be careful. Your closest friends tend to be your roomates. And if you just dont get along with them then you tend to find someone in a class.

Brittany

The most popular groups are WIUP-FM, The BEC, TEN, and Greek Life. IUP is an on going party from starting. ppl joke the weekends start on wed. at wolfies lol

Jenn

Living in the dorms your freshman year is the best way to make friends. Then once you start taking classes in your major you will meet more friends that you will find yourself with new friends that have a lot more in common with you and you will end up spending time studying and hanging out with these friends.

Chris

Yay theater! theres lots of great theater, and opportunity for non-majors to be apart.

Leo

Greek life on IUP's campus is huge!! I would say about 45-65{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population are in some way involved with greek life. The dorms on campus are safe and with our new residential revival they're also beautiful. I like this question: "i f i was a wake at 2am on a tuesday, what would i be doing?"-- well id be in bed wondering why i cant sleep. not too many people go out on tuesday, but there is a scene if thats what your into.

tyler

Great. Even though a lot of students drink and may do so in a poor manner. I believe that drinking at fraternity or other parties or any other activities that the campus has are great ways to build up ones self esteem as well as their social life

Denny

Parties and weed

Jessi

The most popular groups are those that are Greek. I am in the Panhellenic Association, which consists of 11 sororities and about 450 women. We work hard to support the community and different causes. Yes, dorm doors are always open. Athletic events are poorly attended. I think it is because we are not allowed to tailgate, but then maybe it is because we are Division 2 school. Guest speakers are only attended because classes make them mandatory. Same with theater. The dating scene... well... it seems as though everyone has a significant other but yet we all complain how there is no one to date. I met my closest friends through Alpha Gamma Delta. If I am awake at 2 am it is because I was at the bar on a Tuesday, otherwise I would have been in bed at 11:30. Each year homecoming is the biggest and best event at IUP. The town doubles to triples in size and people flood the streets for the parade. People that party, party a lot, those that don't party, don't party.. obviously. Greek life is a small percentage at IUP but it is a big part of IUP because of all the events that each group presents for the campus. Last weekend I went to the bars. Saturday night without drinking would be a dinner out on the town then maybe a rented movie with roommates. Off campus we go to the city, Pittsburgh, or shop, or just hang around our apartments.

Daniel

Without greek life, IUP would be one really really really boring place.

Charlie

Religious, sports, Greeks Zeta Tau Alpha-past president yes They all are pretty popular The dating scence SUCKS Sorority Watching TV or leaving the bar IUP Day, HOMECOMING! I'd say 3-4 times a week MOST IMPORTANT!!! Bar Movies, hanging out with my roommates Bar, mall, go to the park, go to the lake

Kat

i don't really know what the most popular ones are. i am involved with Alpha Phi Omega which is a nationally recognized coed service fraternity. i don't live in a dorm. i've never gone to an athletic event. depending on the guest speaker they are popular especially if extra credit is offered. theatre productions vary on the reviews and familiarity of the production, also attendance is higher if extra credit is offered. don't know much about the dating scene, i have only dated 2 people while being here. i have met my closest friends through Alpha Phi Omega, classes, and through other friends. i would be studying or not able to fall asleep at 2am on a tuesday. homecoming in the fall and sugarcup in the spring. it depends on the person, some people party all the time while others rarely if ever party. i usually go out one maybe two nights a week. it depends on if you are a part of a fraternity/sorority or not. to those who are involved they are important and for those not involved not so important except for when looking for a place to party. last weekend i went home and worked all weekend. there are usually events on campus that are pretty fun. i live off campus, you can eat, go out, see movies, go to parks.

Tim

Hockey team is pretty popular on campus. Biased of course, involved with IUP hockey, Lasting Impressions PR group and The Penn- student newspaper. All good organizations that are active, beneficial and look good on resumes. Athletic events don't seem to be too popular. I don't think too many people really care about them. Guess speakers or theatre don't seem to be too rousing around these parts. Dating- not bad. A lot of good looking girls around the town, but you gotta watch out for the STD's I've been told. Met my closest friends through classes in journalism and the hockey team. If I'm awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, which is extremely rare, I'm probably applying for jobs online. Homecoming and reading day are pretty wild times each year on the academic calendar. People hit the bottle frequently. It seems there's always some drinking to be done, although I usually reserve fun for the weekends, other go at it 4-5 times a week. I think fraternities and sororities are stupid, so I'm not the guy to answer that question. I drank last weekend...a lot. You can hangout with friends on a Saturday. If not, I'm usually watching hockey. Off campus I go to the bars and hangout with friends at their places.

Nico

@am on Tuesday, your probably writing a paper that is due Wednesday at 8 am. Football games are fun to go to. People vary from partying 7 days a week to not partying at all, you just got to find your type.

Nico

IUP has alot .. i mean alot of activites for anyone

Steve

The most popular groups are they sororities and frats.

Blake

drink

sara

i don't get involved much with the activities on campus so i am not the best person to answer this question. on the weekends i just like to hang out, shop, go see movies, and get homework done.

Alex

international organizations, fraternities. The India Student Association - all students from India actively participate and we have movie shows, parties, and cultural events once a semester. No idea. Most events are house-fulls. People are actively involved. From class or parties. Probably doing an assignment. Homecoming, business day, unity day. Maybe once a week on average. pretty important. Went out of town to New Jersey. Maybe go bowling or play pool or just relax at home. Nothing much.

Jordan

In dorms, there is an unwritten rule: the open door policy. That's how many people meet their friends when they are freshmen, new to the school. Recently I attended a speech given by Cornel West, and it was surprisingly packed. And I mean packed. There was standing room only. Speeches don't seem to be popular when speaking with random students, yet they often attract hordes of people. I guess it depends on who the speaker is and how many professors are requiring attendance. People party all the time. You could probably walk down the street any given night and run across a party. But the most celebrated party days begin with "Thirsty Thursday" and end with Saturday. Sororities and fraternities enjoy a self-proclaimed importance. They are only important to the people who are in them. The girls walk around with their bags with their greek letters sewn on, and the boys all wear the hoodies, also with the greek letters. Many of the people I talk to think it's ridiculous, a waste of time and money, but of course there are the people who enjoy it too.
