Indiana University of Pennsylvania-Main Campus Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Whitney

I would have to say the best thing on campus is the Oak Grove. We have a lot of pride in this grove and a lot of events usually take place here. It's also the place where most of the buildings and classrooms are located. If I could change one thing about IUP, it would be the prices of EVERYTHING. Recently, prices have increased for both pop and snack machines, washers and driers, books, prices for one's meal plan and housing, etc. No one has enjoyed this little hike and believe me, I have heard my share of whining, complaining and general disliking of this. Most people get confused. They think that the college in in Indiana state with a town called Pennsylvania....Really. I don't understand why so many people believe the school is in Indiana state! I spend the better portion of my time in the Oak Grove. Yes, it's a college town. No doubt about that. I would like to say that the adminstration is fair, but.....it just depends on the subject of which you're talking about. Hopefully that makes some sense. I've been aboard this spring term, so I can't call this is "recent". In the 2007 fall term, our mascot and school team name (Mascot was a bear and our school name was the Indians) were changed to a red-tailed hawk. Now, our administration let the students pick a new mascot to replace our old ones. A large portion of the student communinity wanted the school name to be the "Fighting Squirrels". In our Oak Grove, we have a rather large community of squirrels, so everyone's thought was "Yeah...why not squirrels?" Our school quickly tossed that suggestion out the window saying that squirrels wasn't a moral boosting animal a.k.a. it wasn't manly enough. There were more choices than just squirrels, but this was the most popular opinion by far. So, the school decided that we would become the Crimson Hawks. Saying that we have hawks in the Oak Grove to and had a "picture" to prove it. Needless to say, the student community was less than thrilled and was only made worse when this little piece of news got out. Once the new mascot got approved, news sweeped the campus of an online comic website with a female heroine called the "Crimson Hawk". Sadly, said "heroine" got raped in each and every comic and had to fight with a lot less clothing on. Most of the students, including myself, started to rant on and on about how our school had fallen so low as to pick a "whore" for our mascot. "We were better off with the squirrel!!!", we would say. The school tried to get the guy that owned the website to shut it down and preserve what was left of our school pride, but the guy basically said, "No, I was here first. So, suck it up!" Now, we just don't talk about it, it only serves to remind us of what we now have to live with. There's nothing highly unusual about us. My one experience is coming here and meeting some of my best friends. We complain about our cafe's food. We don't get a lot of choices and the food gets repeated a lot throughout the terms, but that college life: You have to deal with world now.

THE BEST THING ABOUT IUP- the diversity is great, the availability of the professors is great and the size of the school is great. Many people may think our school is soooo far away but, my response to that is, its far enough away that you feel like you are somewhere where you can begin a whole new chapter in your life and your in a completely different surrounding. You are still able to get home easily no matter where you live. ONE THING I'D CHANGE- I would love to change the fact that our school is not a smoke-free campus. The amount of smokers on our campus is un-believeable. when youre walking to class, 4 out of the 5 days of class you are behind a smoker. THE REACTION OF PEOPLE- people are very familiar with my school and they are excited to here that i attend IUP! COLLEGE TOWN- IUP is a lovely college town and my father loves coming to visit Indiana. Its much more welcoming than Punxsutawney. Its nice to just walk down Philly street and observe the way of life in this town, as oppose to the city atmosphere that I am used to. SCHOOL PRIDE- the level of school pride is HUGE! Once football season comes the school clothing turns into "crimson hawk" territory! CONTROVERSY- when there is controversy amongst students the faculty tend to be a little lax about it until something major happens. That would be one downfall of the university to me. I have been in some situations that were poorly handled. MEMORIES- homecoming is always very fun!!!! ONE UN-USUAL THING: 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are very academically conscience!

The best thing about IUP is the size, you can walk anywhere and not have to take a bus. Most of the time at IUP I spent in my house with my roomates, or at night on South 7th St, when I turned 21, Phildelphia Street is the best place to go, there are so many people who are just out to have a good time. Not many people participate in the athletics at IUP. I was only at two games. The best experience I had at IUP was joining a sorority. Greek Life is very big at IUP. There are several sororities and everyone finds their perfect one.

Chad

Although I respect and admire almost all of the respected professors at IUP, the administration seems to be all about business. The average IUP student graduates in 5 years. However, this statistic is misleading. Considering the classes needed to fulfill the Liberal Arts requirements, the frequency they are offered and the capacity of the class, its a wonder that students are able to complete college in 5 years and not 6 or 7. If IUP is going to call itself a 4 year university, it needs to hire more proffessors to teach the classes it requires.

Kay

I think the school is just the right size. It has a good environment

Christa

Size wise, IUP is very comfortable. Though there is a large number of students that go to school here, it still has a small quaint feel to it because you seem the same faces EVERYWHERE. An issue of questioning my security here was one that never crossed my mind because of it's small feel but my sophomore year I lived in the new suites that they are building EVERYWHERE. One time I was walking home late night and upon arrival I was told I was not allowed into the building because it was on "lock down" I replied with a "I live here, officer. It is 1 am and I want to go to bed. I have an early class." He still refused and told me that there was a person in the building with a handgun and no one could go in. I called my roommate (who was in the building) to see if she knew what was going on. She had no idea. So much for IUPs dial 911 new security procedure. The one where you had to give them a phone number so they could contact you in case of an emergency. ...Apparently NO ONE in my building receive a message about there being someone in our building with a gun. I was incredibly pissed. I would want to know If there was someone running around the area that I live in with a fucking gun.

Lauren

IUP was the best place for me. It wasn't too big or too small and everything in the town was very convenient. Te best part was being part of the Marching Band and living in the dorms....that's where you meet your friends. IUP school pride is great too. I do think that is has dwindled though because of the constant change of our mascot. We are and always will be the IUP INDIANS.

Robin

One piece of advice I want to give an incoming freshman is that IUP can change you for the worse if you let it. When you get here you have to find your place and if you try too hard to fit in with the crowd that you think is the coolest you could end up being miserable until you graduate. A friend of mine pledged Delta Tau Delta (this frat is known for a lot of bad things on campus)his freshman year and he is a senior now and he still says that it was the biggest mistake he ever made. Pledging somewhere is not for everyone especially at IUP the greeks here are pretty terrible. It doesnt matter where you want to pledge meaning if you want to pledge an historically black organization or one if the others be aware that just because they sounded good online or because you are a legacy doesnt mean that the members here are going to be nice to you. One last hing, this is not high school anymore people, if you were the hottest chick in your hometown of the big bad ass than trust me it wont mean a thing when you get here because at IUP there will be a hundred high school hot chicks and another hundred big bad asses.

Amber

The size of IUP is just right. It is located in Indiana, PA, which may be considered a college town, but the permanent residents are great people. If I could change one thing, it would be our mascot, the Crimson Hawk. I think one of the best things about IUP is its beautiful campus.

Heather

Personally, I enjoy attending IUP. Personally, I come from a small town where nature and the outdoors are a way of life. Here at IUP, the beauty of nature coexists with the rapid pace of city life. You are able to enjoy the view of trees, and squirrels while having many forms of entertainment including malls, movie theaters, bars, and night clubs all at your disposal. For me, being a sophomore, I feel the one thing I would change, would be to live on campus, rather than commuting my freshman year. Commuting, although convenant for my family, excluded me from many social events throughout the year. However, thankfully to Work Study, I am able to experience IUP at a faculty and student level. Being a student employ enabled me to really feel as if I was part of this striving campus despite the distance of my commute!

Nate

The best thing about iup is that it is a very pretty college that is moderately spread out to give it a nice feel.

Stephanie

IUP is surrounded by a small college town, but the campus itself has enough entertainment that you would never really be board. The only thing that I could complain is that the food places nearby need to stay open past 11:00 pm. Also, the mall is pathetic. I like the size of the campus. It isn't too big, but not even close to being a small school. I think that if anyone were to attend IUP they should defidently get involved with a club, team, or some sort of organization. There are so many groups on the campus. I found it better to meet people and have better connections within the campus by joining a sorrority.

Reese

I don't like the direction the classes are heading, too many students and not enough teachers.

Tami

I do not attend the main campus so I cannot tell you about campus life. As far as the organization, I have not had too many difficulties in dealing with issues. When I went to Penn State I had a few administrative challenges because of the size and bureaucracy.

Sarah

The best thing about IUP is all the school spirit we have, it makes you so proud to be apart of IUP. The size is just right, there is enough people to meet, but I never feel to over crowded. The best part is IUP is always moving forward and trying to make IUP an even better college. I will never forget all the IUP football games my freshman year, with the new mascot the CRIMSON HAWK!

Amanda

To me IUP is the perfect size school. There are I think approximately 14,000 students but the class sizes are still small. The professors get to know you as a student and will usually go out of their way to help you if you have a problem. One thing that really surprised me about IUP is the students. There are students from all over the world at IUP. I guess this surprised me because I grew up near IUP and it's hard to believe that people from all over have heard of it and selected IUP out of all the colleges. I think Indiana is a pretty nice college town. There are many restaurants to choose from (especially on Philly street). The mall however, is not that great but if you have a car there are some pretty good malls within an hour. There is always something going on in the surrounding areas so you can keep busy if you want to. Lastly, I think IUP could really improve on the school pride. I have gone to a few basketball games and sometimes the gym is empty. It's kind of disappointing. I really enjoy going to the football games. Since I came to IUP the team has been very good so it is fun to watch. I would encourage anyone coming to IUP to at least try going to some sporting events. They really can be a lot of fun!

Leigh-Ann

IUP is great. The size is great, the classroom size is great, and even the people there are great. When I tell people I attend IUP, most tell me that I must party a lot because it is known for being a big party school. In reality, isnt every college or university a party school if it has students on campus who have that kind of attitude? Just my opinion. While I am on campus I spend most of my time probably in the dining hall. Haha. I like to meet my friends there, and we can sit there for a few hours and chat while eating! How can you pass that up? I believe that IUP is a college town. Other than the school, there really isnt too much to do unless you drive to Pittsburgh.

James

Again, I was in the Safety Science cohort program. Only saw my classmates during the summer for one week. We were all full-time working professionals, established in our careers. But the networking and information sharing among us was priceless.

Amber

One of the best things about campus is the Oak Grove. On a nice sunny day it's the perfect place to hang out with friends or do some work. Campus is not too big and not too small but right. There are plenty of dining options on campus but also a variety of places to choose off campus as well, which are either in walking distance or a short ride on the bus (which you don't have to pay to ride). Something unusual about IUP was the whole debate over the mascot: up until recently we were the Indians and for a long time we had an Indian mascot, but in hopes of not offending Native Americans they kept the Indian name and got a bear mascot named Cherokee. Eventually we were forced to change our name and mascot (which I fully supported the idea because it was demeaning), a "brilliant" board of people decided that we should be the Crimson Hawks, and of course one soul had to look that name up on Google and discover that our sports teams were named after a cartoon porn star. So, yes, the Crimson Hawks are named after porn (needless the say that though our symbol is a hawk I try to avoid buying anything with the symbol or the name).

Brianna

I really like the size of IUP. The class sizes usually aren't terriably big and you are comfortable enough to approach your professor with questions or if you need help. People don't think that IUP is a good school but the truth is that it has some really good programs of study and lots of scholarly people there to assist you anytime you need them.

Grant

IUP is a great school that changed my opinion on the state university system of pa. I transferred from a different school (i will leave nameless), because that school had huge problems on administration, policies and classes offered. the transition here was smooth and care-free. I only lost 6 credits transferring, not the admistrations fault the classes i took are not offered here. IUP is excellent every class i need to graduate is offered and I don't have to wait an additional 2 years to graduate. The other school i went to, offered a class once every 3 years, i needed to take a class it was required for me to graduate. The response is excellent when i tell them I go to IUP, I was visiting a university for grad school and they asked where i am going and I said IUP, They were impressed the even named one member of our schools faculty as a graduate from there school. I sadly admit that i spend most of my time in the library or the hub, studying. I live off-campus. school pride is average when it comes to athletics.

Francine

The parking situation is horrible for commuting students. I drive 54 miles one way to have to pay to park, even though I have a commuter parking pass. There is one parking garage however it fills up quickly as well as the other lots. There is not a MAC machine near the Johnson building and unless you have the correct change, one either overpays to park or receives fines. There is only one (pay at space machine) in each of the lots and one has to stand in lines waiting to pay for parking space. The classes needed for the Safety program are normally on restricted schedule. In other words, the class is offered at one specific time or semester. For example, I need 2 required safety classes. One is offered one Monday-Wednesday. The other is offered on Tues-Thursday, unless I'm willing to drive 4 days a week to take 2 classes for 90 minutes. The labs are not offered immediately following the class. 8-9:30 class, the lab is at 2-5. One has to wait around all day. Most instructors are willing to see students outside of normal office hours. There is a attendance policy however, it's normally up to individual instructors own policies. Most classes have group work which is difficult due to some students lack of ambition or not wanting to participate. Overall, the food offered at the school is not that bad. There is lines that one must wait in and the set up of the cafeteria is not designed correctly to ease the flow of students to the different food stations. The bookstore will send your books UPS for a reasonable fee which aids in having to wait in line. Most of the books that are required are barely used. Some classes are offered online courses. I actually prefer those however, most in my major were not. Lab supplies are at times limited and groups are too large to really understand what it being learned. There is a career center and the school does have a large job fair (which is most important) and job postions at least in my field are posted on bulletin boards The library is opened late except on Fridays and there is a place to workout (gym facility) and a pool. I have never used. I have never went to a sporting event at the campus but I believe that there is varied sports offered for both males/females.

nathanael

I like the small classes and all the hot chicks there. The town needs a little more in it like a Sams Club or something like that. I think the most frequent student complaint is the parking. Parking at IUP is horrid.

Kyle

It's a good school for commuters, especially with an increasing use of online WebCT for classes -- just show up early for your on-campus classes so you can get a parking space. The best thing about IUP is the faculty. They are very interested in their students' well-being. If there is a downside, it is construction of new buildings that might not really be necessary -- some potential students might end up getting priced out of attending. Housing is highly expensive, so much so that I just commute instead.

Cody

People at IUP are sooo friendly. Not so many people come out for the games.. I play ice hockey.. theres not a lot of support.. Indiana is pretty boring.

Brendon

I grew up in Indiana, PA so I clearly have always been around the school. I prefer a large campus with a large student body. IUP currently has roughly 14,000 people. The surrounding town is definitely a college town. A lot of the decisions are based around the college. I love IUP for many reasons. One being that many of my friends are here and that there is always something to do, either meeting new people or something that involves academics or athletics.

Christine

For me, the class sizes at IUP are perfect. Not too big, not too small. You can get excellent personalized attention from professors. Also, when I ask older students which teachers to take, I hardly heard negative comments about teachers. When I was first accepted to IUP and I told my family and friends, everyone asked "Where is that school?" Mostly because I live 5 hours away from IUP. However, now, 4 years later, when people ask me where I attend college, they know exactly where I go, and more than likely, they will ask about Jimmy Stewart.

Jamie

It's a nice sized school with excellent professors. There's a graduate school and a ton of extra-curriculars, clubs, organizations, and extra opportunities. The town itself is smaller than I'm used to, but there's plenty to keep busy.

Liz

My first year at IUP was wonderful. I met a lot of really nice people and made numerous friendships. Everyone on campus is so nice and willing to help. I haven't been in a setting like this before where most people go out of their way to help you. Being a part of the Track and Field team has made me grow as a person and learn what it means to "be a family." The track team is my family and I wouldn't know what to do without them. They are a great group of student-athletes and wonderful people. Getting to know my professors was fun. I realized that they are there for me to learn and most of them will also go out of their way to help you learn and understand. Many of them I will continue to keep in touch with throughout my years at IUP.

Sarah

IUP is a good size school with a beautiful campus. There is a lot of partying but you don't have to. It has a good education program. Indiana is a nice town. The administration kind of stinks, they are slow about everything. There isn't a lot of school spirit unless you are in a sport. The marching band is probably the best and most accomplished group at IUP.

Marissa

IUP has a homey atmosphere in a small town setting. It is very quaint and easy to maneuver around. I spend most of my time around the HUB. For the most part the college runs Indiana. I've never had anyone react negatively when I say I attend IUP and I suppose that's a good thing. Nothing unusual that I am aware of has happened. I will always remember first of freshman year, it's hard to know exactly what to expect. It was a fun experience and getting to know people is easy.

Lauren

When I tell people I'm going to IUP, there first reaction is that it used to be a teacher's college. It had a good reputation, and well known for a lot of majors. I like the town of Indiana, it is kind of small but I find that when I go home for breaks I do miss it. The campus is the perfect size, its easy to find to get to places and doesn't take long to walk to class. I really like the fitness center at IUP, I think it is a really great facility. There are lots of clubs on campus and it is important to get involved. Joining clubs helped me make the transition into college, it puts you in social situations. The only bad thing about IUP right now is the construction, and the overpriced dorms. I choose to live off campus because the dorms are ridiculously expensive. The best part of IUP is the oakgrove. I love the oakgrove because it is so relaxing, you can hang out with friends, study, or picnic. The oakgrove is what really attracted me to IUP, especially during the spring when the flowers are blooming.

Carrie

It is a big school in a small town. The best thing about IUP is it is so gorgeous. The Oak Grove is a great place to go. The classes are small enough that the Professors know you by name. There are good athletics also to get involved in and watch. The facilities are excellent, and there are so many kids, you are bound to make some friends!

Bonnie

The best part about IUP to me is the array of people that I have met here. I met so many friends that sometimes it is destracting. If I could change one thing I would change the schduling. IUP is building the campus into something enormous. They are brining in a lot of new people and it is making classes difficult to get into. More classes need to be added. The size of the school is just right for me. There are a good amount of students so that facilitys maintain uncrowded. I spend most of my time on campus either in the library or in the oak grove if it is nice. IUP needs more school pride. Football games are dissapointing. One experience I will always remeber is being hypnotized in the HUB facitlity. The most frequent complaint of students that are in their junior or senior year is not being able to get the classes that they need for graduation.

Bill

It is a big party school. There's always something to do on the weekends and during the week, even if you're not a big drinker. Although there is a lot to do, most everything consists of drinking alcohol and partying with friends. The entire town is made up around the university and it's students. They are trying to crack down on the underage drinking, but it doesn't seem to be making much of an impact. The sports teams are really good in general, but I wouldn't say the students get too into the games. The school is very good academically and the administration is very helpful. There are a lot of ways that they help from learning and writing centers to events to bring the students together. All together, I would rank IUP very highly and would say it was a great decision on choosing to go to school there. The thing I remember most about IUP is the time I spent with my friends on the weekend and the parties that we threw.

Breanna

Even though its sorta in the middle of no-where, its a pretty big school. Pennsylvania's biggest state school. Most time is spent on or near campus, mostly because there's not too much to do around town. There is a mall but it is very small & only has a few good stores. But, Pittsburgh is only about an hour away so you can always shop there & its not hard to find a ride either. Everyone hates our President because he's trying to get ride of Greek life, which basically means parties. IUP has its very own "hot dog man". He has a cart in a Giant Eagle parking lot every Thurs, Friday & Saturday nights from 11pm til 3am everyone goes there while wasted & its good food! Although there are police EVERYWHERE, unless you are pissing, puking, or causing a scene, and walking pretty straight you'll be good to go!

Stacy

I enjoyed my sorority, i came out with such great friends and great experience that i now find beneficial at my internship. I would change the parking situation, WE NEED MORE SPOTS, I wasted so much money on tickets and towing (I have knee problems that prevented me from walking here and there). The campus size is just right but let IUP expand the greek life ceiling, more people are coming in and should be increased within the greek life also. Hick town and college town. Biggest controversy for me was the homecoming parade route changed, alot of my alum friends didnt return for this purpose, disappointing. I believe alot of people are proud to say they go to IUP because its a party school, however whenever they mature to a senior or alum it really is a good school and you speak less of the party. MORE PARKINGGGGGGGGGGG please.

Kendall

The best part of the school is by far the faculty. Well, I suppose that I can only speak for the history department, but all of the professors are amazing, talented and brilliant individuals. They care about each student as if they were their own children. They have serious accomplishments, awards, and experience in their fields. And most of them aren’t even that pretentious. Also the campus is beautiful, at least I think. It was anyways, when I went there, but they have been making a lot of serious changes to the campus. Some parts I can’t even recognize. The school has a lot of really neat history, however no one that goes there seems to appreciate it. It has good camping grounds, hiking and out door sports. But that’s about it, don’t come here if you like night life, unless you are willing to drive to Pittsburgh, which most people are after a few weekends when they become desperate for something different. Just be sure to make friends with someone who owns a car. The town, although cute, hates the college students because they are obnoxious, but I challenge you to find a college town where that is not the case. When I tell people I go IUP they usually say one of two things, “yeah I heard of it…..(blank stare)” or “Indiana university of PA?? What the hell state is that in??” Where upon you have to either pretend to laugh, like that person is the first to make the connection that the name of the town of Indiana is also the name of a state within the united states, or remind them that the town existed first, and the state stole the name. There is a lot of small town drama, because despite the size, IUP is pretty much a small town, especially within its departments. But I love it, and after a while it feels like home. I will never forget the friends I have made or the awesome profs that I admire.

mike

I wish this was more multiple choice.

Helen

I feel that IUPis the perfect size. I love that when I walk through the Oak Grove I get to see and wave hello to fellow peers, friends, and professors. The overall vibe of IUP is very welcoming I'd say. I felt right at home pretty much right away at school. Not only were almost all of my professors very kind and helpful, but so were the custodial staffs and cafeteria workers. Everyone just seems happy at IUP!

lindsey

best thing about iup is that they are trying to build new dorms and making the school look a lot nicer.. another great thing about the scool is that it is a big school but just the right size in the fact that the teachers can still learn your name and they are there to help. when since i am not from pa people are like where the heck is that and is it in indiana or pa. in the dorms with my friends or in the hub where their is food and the gym and little places to study. i dont really think its a colllege town the school does take up a lot of the town but i feel like the people that live in the town are not bother by the school. a lot of the people dont like the dean but i have only been there a semester so i dont really know about him so much. i think he is doing a good thing with the living situation , but he doesnt like greek life and that is a big part of my life on campus. without zta in my life i would probably hate iup and wont be going back. we have very good sport teams and our school has a lot of pride. one thing that i will always remember is when i moved into by dorm and decided that i was going to do something good here and i have.

Alyssa

There's not much to do in Indiana but if you make good friends you will always find something to do in your spare time. The campus is a good size unless you have to go from one side of campus to the other. Living in the dorms is where I met most of my friends, we are all still really close. I hate our president of the school. There are to many cops, even my parents said there were to many. Also the construction on campus sucks if you drive. I wish more people would get excited for football, like tailgate beforehand. Everyone I know loves IUP and everyone I know that left wish to be back.

Bryan

The best thing about IUP is the small yet short walking distance between classes, and the thing I'd change is the city development. Nothing to do within the city thats without walking distance (Kmart, Walmart, Movies, etc.) The city seems like a run down dump almost like the losing population of Detriot or Pittsburgh after the Steel Industry failure. So just a boring town with a nice university in the center of it.

Bethany

I think IUP is a great school. It has a decent size campus filled with activities and landmarks. I spend most of my time at the feild house swimming or in the library studying. There is alot of school pride especailly towards the football team. I will always go to the Slippery Rock vs. IUP football game because its always a good game between because of their rilvary against each other. When i tell a person i go to iup, they usually dont have much of a reaction. They just ask how it went and how i did with swimming and my grades. Which that is the main reason why a person goes to college.

Kim

I would say that IUP is just the right size for students that want to attend a university that has a diverse student body. We have a good number of international students as well as students from out of state. Plus, it's in a small town setting, so there really is not much crime. I would have to say that I feel very safe at IUP. The school is also affordable. It's not as expensive as private universities.

Keith

Well the whole town pretty much survives because of the University. It has a main street with little dance clubs, bars, coffee shops, clothing stores, restaurants, etc... One thing I would change is the restrictions to get in. Too many "unscholastic" students are arriving and I beleive its to fullfill all the student dorms. The food is good. I have visited alot of colleges and I thing IUP is competetive with other state schools. I beleive the science department needs to upgrade the building/equipment. I spend alot of time at the library/coffee shops.

Lindsey

IUP was just the right size. Even though there are quite a large amount of students IUP still feels like a home away from home. In my first two years I spent most of my time on campus and getting to know the area. I would suggest going up to Philadelphia Street, there are many restuarants and nice shops. Also there are many other activities outside of the campus such as bowling (Moahawk Lanes) and visiting the Animal Shelter or Four Footed Friends. I feel like IUP should have more school spirit, the attendance at many athletic events was poor and the over all pride in IUP was weak. One complaint that many students have is the food. It is over priced for the quality and amount that the student recieves. An experience I will always remember is my involvement in Sorority Life (Theta Phi Alpha) it really helped me introduce myself to other girls, made me a more invovled student, and helped me network and meet so many people.

Kelly

When I tell people that I go to IUP I definitely say it with pride. There are very few things about this campus that I really don't like. The Oak Grove is beautiful in the fall and springtime, walking through it you see kids playing frisbee, reading a book, taking a nap in the grass or on a bench or standing around talking with friends. There is even unusual happenings in the Oak Grove such as the Capoeira group performing; kids re-enacting medieval fights, etc. I always find it surprising how many kids actually attend IUP because the classrooms are rarely crowded. The newest happening on campus is the Revitalization Project that is tearing down the older dorms and putting up new suite-style housing units. I personally find this new development a bad decision on IUP's part. The cost of living in these new units is outrageous compared to the older dorms, and after talking to many students who lived in the new suites (I wrote an article about it in our school newspaper) the kids said it was very impersonal and hard to meet friends on the floor of the building. I know that all to most of my friends I have at school were ones I met who lived in the old dorms my freshman year. I think also that kids coming into the campus will see the new buildings and think "wow these are so nice" and pay for very expensive housing when there is similar, if not better housing options, off-campus that the school fails to mention to incoming students. Other aspects that I really like about IUP would include the various gyms available on campus to students and our library which is pretty large and has extensive useful materials. Another nice thing about IUP in comparison to other colleges is that nearly all of the classrooms are located in or around the Oak Grove, so you don't have to walk far to get from one class to the next. One downside to Indiana in general is that it's always rainy and windy. There usually isn't a lot of snow during the winter, but it's ALWAYS windy.

I think the best thing about IUP is opportunity. There are so many different things to do on campus whether is being Greek life, clubs in prespective majors, religious organizations and sports. IUP has quite a few students but it never seems that way. The campus is a good size and kind of a small town feel. I am from a hugely populated area and coming to Indiana, PA was like a breath of fresh air from the craziness of city life. WHen I'm on campus, my time is basically spent in the muisc building, in the recital hall performing with various ensembles, at starbucks in Folger, or just hanging with friends in the apartments and dorms. Some of the most complaints I have heard from IUP students are the snow not getting plowed fast enough in the winter and the scheduling process.

The best thing about IUP is the freedom and the friends. There are a lot of people at IUP with different perspectives. It is really great to have the freedom to get to know people that are not the same as you. There is also a good chance to talk to the people in your major. IUP is definitely located in a college town. The whole town knows that most of the population comes from college students during the year. There are plenty of places to walk to and a lot of activities to do. There is not really a lot of school pride at IUP, sometimes there is, but most of the time there is not a lot. There is not anything unusual about IUP, it gets very cold in the winter and it is a killer walking outside. Other than that, there is nothing unusual and everything seems to just be very dedicated to the college life.
