Iowa State University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Theresa

Being a sorority almost everyone around you has money and goes shopping so I feel like i fit in very well but i know that sometimes people who have less money it can get awkward because they feel like they can't do certain activites.

Dylan

There a lot of different activites that allow one to get involved. There are lots of differnt groups allowing someones to get involoved with wahtever interests them. This a good aspect of Iowa State! Different types of students are able to interact through common interests such as in specific groups.

nicole

Most students wear jeans and a t-shirt or jeans and a nice shirt or sweatpants and sweatshirts. I would have to say that most students are come from out of state. I am sure that students tell people how much they think they will make but I have not heard of anyone telling me that.

Becky

My experiences with religious issues at Iowa State have been fairly pleasant. There are groups for eveyrone to go and explore their faith. I personally enjoy SALT which is a nice group for Christians to get together and celebrate Christ. But there are multitudes of different religious groups and organizations. The only time I remember being offended was when there was a flyer and I found it very offensive.

Katie

I do not that that anyone would feel out of place here, sometimes it is hard for me though to accept all of the small town kids. Most of the students here are from small towns, and then it attracts very few people from Nebraska, quite a bit from Minnesota and the Chicago area. I do not think that many people are super well off, but then you have the kids from Omaha, which is a pretty well off known community to live in, and the Chicago and Minnesota kids tend to be well off as well.

Jerry

The school is in the middle of Iowa, so there isn't a terrible amount of diversity built into school life. However, Iowa State does a good job of promoting diversity and acceptance. However, I think that not all the students are entirely open-minded to the diversity the University attempts to claim the students / campus have. Many students are middle-class students, and there are a lot of first-generation students. But many disciplines are focused on the practical aspects of the working world, so a lot of emphasis is placed on what students do upon graduation.

Erin

I think that depending on where you lived and who you interacted with depends on how you view the student body. I met a wide variety of people who lived in different dorms, and saw that certain types of people tended to live in different dorms. I think that you can't classify the school as being religious or political, but I knew both religious and political people. They were involved with religious groups and political groups, respectively, but didn't force their views or opinions on me unless I asked for it.

Alex

I think that Iowa State has a great student body. It is so diverse that there is room for everybody to fit in. I also like it because you don't have to worry what you look like. If I was having a bad day and just wanted to wear sweatpants, I would because I know that other people don't care. You see people wear everything on campus. You have the kids who dress up, kids who wear sweats, and kids who wear clothes that express their personality. It's great!

Tate

I feel that nobody would really feel out of place at Iowa State. It is so diverse that everyone feels welcome. There is a wide varity of races here. Nobody should feel left out. I feel our student body has a lot of pride also. Its a nice feeling.

Kelsey

from anywhere and everywhere, all financial backgrounds, a little bit of everyone!

Sarah

Greek, people who want to be involved, and people who are just here for an education

Charlie

Iowa State has many groups, clubs and things that are not affiliated with the college that I think would make anyone feel like they fit in.

Alex

people wear tees and jeans or sweatpants unless you are a fashion student. Nothing special. Most of the student are from the midwest, so everyone is really nice

Andy

Students wear a variety of things- jeans, sweats, dresses, suits. Some students are very politically active or concerned with the environment

Allard

I haven't had any problems feeling out of place here or heard of anyone having problems. I think most Iowa State students are from small towns in Iowa.

Morgan

They are an energetic group of individuals that never cease to amaze me.

Jody

different people, but respectful

Trista

Most of Iowa State is either from Iowa or from out of the country.

Lindsay

I interacted with several different types of people at ISU. I think most people are open to communicating with all sorts of backgrounds. Some students are politically aware but most are not.

Kelly

There are many clubs for people to be involve in. There is something to interest everyone. Students mostly dress down for class. A thing that I don't like about Iowa State is that when you walk to class, there is never any interaction that happens when you pass somebody. Usually the other person just looks away or down to the ground. I think that if people were to simple more when they past each other while walking, a lot of people would have better days.

Ani

Most iowa state students are iowa, but there are a pretty big sum from mn and il. most students wear comfortable clothes to class, often pajama pants or sweatshirts, nothing too fancy

Jessica

I don't think that any students feel out of place at Iowa State. Most students wear jeans and t-shirts to class. Most Iowa students are from Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois.

Alex

This might sound very odd, but I think its incredible weird that there are not many African American individuals that attend Iowa State University unless they are athletes. One of my best friends from home is African American, and its just weird to not see very many people of this race on campus.

Alex

I dont think that many people would feel left out here, it is a really welcoming environment.

Lauren

i came from a predominantly white school (literally 11 black students out of 1200) so anywhere is going to be a lot different than what im used to. there are tons of foreign exchange students, mostly asian. most kids wear pajamas to class, including myself.

Jesse

I don't believe any student would feel out of place at ISU. I think the student body is pretty diverse. If someone puts in an effort they are bound to find a place they fit in. Especially with the large number of clubs on campus. I see most students in ISU sweats and jeans. I am mostly in business attire in class because I either come from work or go to work after class. There seem to be a lot of people from Minnesota at ISU.

Alex

I am Asian-American and am in a Greek house. I am the only asian active member in my hosue right now but I have never felt outcasted. In a very caucasian campus, very many different people interact, which I really love.

Ash

Iowa State was made up of a very diverse group of students when I attended. It is probably not a good university to attend if you have serious prejudices or if you are not willing to interact with others differnt than you. No close minded people allowed! Actually, they would probably be able to find their own niche. The mixtures of races, cultures, personal and political beliefs, and individual personalities is what made Iowa State so unique and colorful to me. As far as what to wear, I'm pretty sure that was up to the individuals beliefs, customs, upbringing and self pride. I wore jeans with sweaters, sweatshirts, or t-shirts a majority of the time. The only time I felt akward was my freshman year when I wore my boyfriends Oklahoma football jersey. Obviously, I was oblivious to the Big 12 at the time.

Alex

I think Iowa States Student body is very diverse. However, there are social norms that we all follow. I don't think that anyone would really feel out of place at Iowa State.

Nicole

Iowa State's student body is a nice mix, but mostly small town Iowa folk.

Ryan

All social groups have there place if you don't agree you stay away if you won't to get involved you contact the club/organization president.

Hannah

There are different groups at Iowa State. Cheerleaders Hicks/Farmers Athletes Greeks Goths What's interesting though is that although one may be stereotyped in one group or another, it's still possible to belong to more than one for these groups. Most students wear sweatpants to class, or at least I did!

Amy

When I was at ISU there were the ongoing diversity issues, every college wants to be diverse, i spent one year on campus during an election year, was there an overwhelming left vs right, I can't say, what I remember was the importance of voting was prevelant, and arrangements were made to 1. be registered to vote, and 2. for transportation to your polling place! most of the students i knew were from across Iowa, the chicago area, and the twin cities area. I think your ecomonic state before entering college is who you are naturally attracted to, my friends were mostly the same financially as I was. I knew people who came from wealth, I knew people who were on their own for college.

Katie

Nobody would feel out of place at Iowa State. We have so many different ethnicities and groups of people that it's next to impossible to feel left out! There isn't one group out there on campus that doesn't exist for their friendship at ISU. Most ISU students are from small towns in Iowa, Minnesota, Chicago, or another country.

Kathleen

1994-1998 the student body seemed to me to be predominately from Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. It was not a very diverse campus; the majority of students were white, straight, catholic and democrat, middle class. At that time I think that if a student felt out of place it would be someone who was from another country. Although there were groups an International student could be involved in I didn't see a lot of International students socializing with the majority group. Within the groups of students you would see hanging around together they were from the same ethnic background as a general rule.

Molly

Many students are from the Midwest. If they are not from Iowa they are usually from MN. I'm from MN and I was surprised to find so many out of state students. Many different types of students interact. It is such a big school so rarely will you see clicks or people being exclusive.

Karen

I didn't see a lot of diversity.

Bethany

People make too much out of the race issue. I never experianced any sort of descrimination as an undergrad at ISU. The student body I interacted with was very accepting.

Stephanie

Iowa State is mostly white middle class students.

Amy

Iowa State's Student Body is friendly, open, honest, and typical. There could be more diversity. Most students wear jeans and t-shirts to class - it is a very comfortable environment, but can be formal when appropriate. I didn't really notice or pay attention to financial backgrounds. Most students were down to earth and didn't focus on a person's financial status/background. I will say that a lot of the sudents I associated with held PT jobs while attending ISU.

Aimee

ISU is very much a middle of the road school in the Midwest. Students who may feel out of place would be the most liberal students. But, they'll probably go to the University of Iowa. Students are casual. ISU students seem to come from around the Midwest, but some come from afar if they are on scholarship or a seeking one of the excellent curriculums offered... mainly veterinary science, engineering, or anything related to agriculture.

Jenny

Extra curriculars at ISU left nothing to be desired. If you wanted to start a club, the Government of Student Body (GSB) was quite receptive to not only approving a club, but providing some funding to get off the ground.

Alex

I think ISU is fairly diverse. I can't say what kind of student would feel out of place but if someone came from another culture, I like to think that ISU does a phenomenal job of making them feel welcomed. I do know there are a lot of different groups and clubs that are diverse that people are welcomed to go to. I always saw a lot of diverse people when I would walk around campus so I think ISU stays ok in the diverse area. As far as the political sides of things, that was one reason why I wanted to come. Most people know that Iowa City is very liberal in their thinking and they aren't afraid to show it...well...thats not me. I do know that ISU has some left wing people, but its not in your face...neither is the right wing. I felt as though I had some room to make my own decision on the politics and not feel bad about it. When I go to IC, I feel like I should hide for being more on the right side of things.

Katherine

I was involved in a sorority, and not much on campus.

Julie

I loved being part of the dorm and the greek system. I made many life long friends at ISU

Mary

Like I said most people that go to ISU are white kids from the midwest. There were also a lot from the bigger midwest cities but even that group wasn't that large. Any students that do not fit into this type might feel a little out of place. But everyone is so nice and friendly that it wouldn't be the doing of others.

Anna

I don't think any kind of student would feel out of place here. There is enough diversity that anyone can feel comfortable and at home. Most students either wear sweats or jeans and a t-shirt to class. Very few people dress up regularily. Most ISU students are from Iowa and it seems like a lot of them live on farms.

Katie

Groups on campus have handed out flyers as well as written on the sidewalks around campus. I believe these are fine ways to get points across and in no way do these things make me feel uncomfortable or pressured. I honestly don't know what kind of student would feel out of place at ISU, I think that everyone would be able to find someone that they can relate to and enjoy. The majority of the ISU students that I know have come from the midwest. I think that the majority of the student body that comes from out of state is more financially secure than the ones from Iowa, however, I think that most of ISU is overall financially secure. My friends at ISU for the most part all want to be successful and make a decent wage after college.

Sara

ISU honestly isn't very diverse. Most the the student body is from Iowa or a neighboring state, especially Minnesota. Very middle class, very homogeneous.

Marie

If there were four tables, it would be Greeks, Non-greeks, Asians, and Athletes
