Iowa State University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Jesse

Yes, but short-sighted.

Dana

no

Alex

nope.

Ash

I believe that they are. However, I also believe that ISU is strong in other academic areas as well.

Alex

No

Ryan

Sorta...Heck no

Hannah

No!

Amy

I suppose.

Katie

Yes and no. I believe that we have a big mixture of people and ethnicities but we are also still a very friendly and warm campus at heart. You can't go from one end of campus to the other without a question being answered by another student if you needed help. Everybody here is kind and willing to help others out in some way.

Kathleen

No, but there are many students who grew up on farms!

Amy

Yes,

Molly

There are students who grew up on farms but there are also many students from suburbs and other states.

Karen

some are

Bethany

They used to be - things may have changed.

Stephanie

Kirsten

Aimee

no

Jenny

Pretty much -- generalities are made for a reason

Alex

Uh no...we are not all farmers and do not all come from towns of less than 1,000 people. I went to school for Art and Design, not engineering or ag. Most people dont even know that an art school as amazing as ours exists at ISU

Katherine

For some people. There are always the few people who have to ruin things for a whole university.

Julie

no

Mary

The typical student is a white person from the midwest, so yes.

Anna

students - no the school - yes

Katie

I believe after being here at ISU for almost an entire year that their are plenty of things to do on the weekends, also even though the football team doesn't have the best record the tailgating is a huge event before the games! The school spirit is outstanding! Even though Ames isn't the largest of cities the people of Ames and the students that come from all around are great and welcoming!

Sara

In a lot of ways, yes. Most of the people I have met are from Iowa, but not all are farm kids. But they do have a sizable presence on campus. As far as the "nerd school" part goes, maybe I'm biased as an engineer, but there is seemingly more of a focus on academics than "the other state school." Yes, ISU is horrible at football, and there's really not much else to do on weekends if you're under 21 except house parties. You just have to find them...

Marie

No

Kelly

I dont think so

Alex

perhaps...i have yet to discover the truth.

Brittany

that we are smart, hard working, dedicated - that is definitely true. And there are a lot of people here who love farming, but we are actually a pretty diverse group. Most of us take pride in what we do, and because of that it's a great place to be.

Liz

Definitely not accurate.

Stephanie

Yes

Jessica

No

Ashley

No, they apply to some people, but not everyone

Alex

Somewhat just based on the location but not at all completely true.

Alex

No way.

Amanda

I don't think that these stereotypes are accurate but a lot of people believe them.

Robin

No!!!!

Alex

Not everyone hates Iowa students, one of my best friends goes to Iowa. Not all the girls are fat, only a few. Almost all the "farmer" men can be found in the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. And yeah...we are kind of bad at sports.

Dylan

We are certainly not all farmers! (although most of us are for Iowa)

Abby

Kind of

Sarah

No. I believe there are many different types of students at Iowa State. Many of us come from different backgrounds, and that is what makes our school so amazing. Everyone is so polite and caring. The Iowa State community is a great one.

Alex

Not at all, most of us come from big cities like Chicago or Minneapolis

Angela

no, they campus is very diverse with my races and cultures, the greek community is very involved and works hard and usually has better grades and is more involved then most students are, being a business major takes lots of work

Julie
