Iowa State University Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Robin

Iowa State University has many diverse individuals. We all come from different backgrounds and are from different parts of the United States and even different parts of the world. Even though our football team hasnt been outstanding in the past years, there is plenty of school pride with the stadium filling up for nearly every game with students, alumni, and factulty all cheering on our cyclones!

Dylan

Iowa State has fantastic faculty, a beautiful campus, the right size People are not surprised when I tell them from ISU, because I am an engineer the administration is good; we are fortunate I will always remember how helpful everyone is I spend most of my time in the computer lab or in the library The biggest recent controversy is over VEISHA

Abby

I love the campus of Iowa State, the layout and how everything is together. Also that campus town is right next to it and most people live there. I think that Iowa State is the perfect size for me. It's all about personal preference though when it comes to the size of the college.

Sarah

I believe Iowa State is just the right size. There are enough students from many backgrounds that you can surround yourself with the kind of people you want to. There are also many opportunities at Iowa State University, from intramurals to clubs to Greek organizations to volunteer opportunities - the list could go on forever! For fun, I am taking Taekwondo and Hapkido this semester - how cool is that?! I know at a smaller school these choices for classes would not be available. I have also taken advantage of the study abroad and National Student Exhange opportunities offered at Iowa State. Lots of times, smaller schools do not have these options either. I am extremely please with my experience at Iowa State University, and I believe it is the perfect size for anyone who wants countless opportunities.

Alex

I love all of the traditions at Iowa State. I have been a Cyclone since birth and my dad and I can share stories about taking part in the same events.

Angela

I think the size is just right. I love it and its the perfect amount students. People find it natural for me to go to a state school, especially iowa state since im from close by and have been a fan for my whole life. i spend most of my time with my friends at their dorms, apartment, or my room. i dont really go to college town that much. i think the adminstration is pretty good but i dont really hear much about them or what they are doing. the rec renovation or wristbands at veishea. most likely wristbands at veishea was the biggest problem since it changes veishea so much. yes theres tons of school pride, or at least with my friends since we go to sporting events together. iowa state is more diverse and there something for everyone which most people dont realize. i will always remember my sorority life and the sporting events, mainly the time with my friends. students dont like the cost of books, and how theres no parking for cars, and the amount of parking tickets given out

Julie

The campus is really beautiful. The faculty is great and always willing to help you out. There are tons of opportunities to get involved in anything your interested in from clubs to leadership positions.

stephanie

The traditions are inspiring. Iowa State is a close-knit university with a lot of diverse things to offer. It's know for science and engineering, but it's design and education programs are also top in their fields. This college-town atmosphere is great; the whole town appreciates the university and respects us.

Stephanie

The best thing about ISU is the Greek Community. I would change the college of business academic advisers-they are not helpful! ISU is just the right size. I feel like people respect the fact that I go to ISU. I spend most of my time at Gerdin and Durham (where I work). College town. Most ISU admin that I've come in contact to are friendly and helpful. The biggest recent controversy was the change in the VEISHEA concert admission. I feel that there is quite a bit of pride, but not as much as some schools. Nothing unusual comes to mind about Iowa State. One experience I'll always remember is being a part of the Greek Community-we do so much for Iowa State and Ames. Most frequent student complaints are about teachers or curriculum-why make a test so hard that the class average is a failing grade, what do students learn from that? Also, I'm a business student and all my classes involve just taking multiple choice tests and my peers and I vent about how we will not be taking multiple choice tests at a job-we don't learn anything from those tests that will prepare us for the future because after the test we just forget it all and move on.

stephanie

The one thing i like the most about iowa state is the campus. Its beautiful and one of the main reasons why i chose to attend the school in the first place.

Alex

I love Iowa State! There are so many activities to choose from, and I love the Greek community at Iowa State, it is one of the best in the nation and I think we really pride ourselves on that. Also I love campus town, Welch has a lot of fun places for people to go. I think Ames should provide a more club or "bar" like environment for students under the age of 21.. because there is really no place for students to go and dance and/or socialize in campustown. I think there is a lot of school pride, especially in the greek community with events like homecoming, veishea and greek week. I don't have really any complaints about Iowa State, i love it here.

Marie

There are a lot of great things about Iowa State University. First, the campus is beautiful. I love walking to class in the fall when the leaves are falling and it is still warm enough to wear a sweatshirt and jeans. I love the Greek Community at Iowa State. It is so strong and makes this large university seem small because I have met so many people through extracurricular activities.

Natalie

Iowa State is a great university that has so many things to offer to its students. Its a smaller college town, but allows students to really focus on their academics. VEISHEA is a great things to have as well. Its the celebration of the seven colleges at Iowa State and its a time when current students and alumni come together and celebrate Iowa State!

Ashley

I transferred here from a smaller private college in Iowa and I think the size of Iowa State is perfect. I actually like not knowing EVERYONE, but you certainly still meet a lot of people and see people you know everyday on your way to class. My majors aren't very big so my classes are fairly small and I like it that way. I love being in a sorority, it's a great why to be involved, know what's going on around campus, and the greek community give you that small school feel when you want it. I honestly do not know how everyone else on campus that is not greek knows whats going on at Iowa State and participtes in things. I think there is a lot of school pride, even when our athletics aren't doing so well there still seems to be a lot of support behind them.

Julie

Iowa State is just right for me. It is a big school, with small town atmosphere. I have made so many friends through the dorms, classes, and the Greek community. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and everything is within walking distance. There are so many different ways to get involved on campus. One thing I would change is the sports because I feel we should have a baseball and hockey team other than club, and I would like to have a more competitive football team.

Alex

I love the campus it is gorgeous and I always feel at home here. The people are extremely welcoming and so easy to meet. Faculty is very helpful and class sizes are perfect. The campus is all in one area making it easy to walk from buildings. Campus town is kinda small but every place is always full making the weekends a blast!

Alex

I think that Iowa State is the perfect sized university with a very diverse group of students. There are so many opportunities at Iowa State, from clubs and organizations to academics; any person can fit in.

Sarah

Best thing: Over 700 clubs and orgs to get involved in. Good size! People think about how bad our football team is when I say I am from ISU. I spend a lot of time in the MU. College town. ISU's administration is very helpful for the most part.

Cassie

I love how it's a large school, but it still hasa little bit of a small town appeal to it.

Angela

I think the best thing at Iowa State is its Greek Community and Clubs/activities. There is always an activity or something happening on campus. There are so many opportunities to get involved and make your college experience the best it can be. Iowa State has so many choices to pick from, that it is impossible to be a part of everything that you want. Personally, being Greek has been one of the best decisions of my life. I am involved to no end in community service activities, Greek competitions, etc. And not to mention, I have met some people that have become friends for a lifetime. Furthermore, just being a part of a small organization (club) can create numerous opportunities to enhance your socialization, create ties to important people, get involved with other activities, and even looks good on resumes!

Blake

I like the size of Iowa State. Ames is a fun college town. Right now the biggest controversy at ISU is the VIESHA wristband policy. Unfortunately, the VIESHA committee doesn't have enough money to support the crappy bands that they have chosen for this year's entertainment and are going to charge Iowa State students, faculty, and staff 5 dollars for a wristband in order to get into the "free concerts". No big deal it's only $5, right? Well here's the kicker, they are only selling 7,000 wristbands (first come first serve) and they are moving the concerts to a small area to limit the number of people who can attend. They did this in order to "control crowds". Well as you most likely know, there are more than 7,000 students attending ISU, who like to bring their non-ISU friends to the VIESHA concerts.

Brandi

ISU was very large and confusing to me when I first came here, which is kind of strange because I transferred from the University of Iowa (which is just as big). However, by getting involved in my sorority and taking a variety of classes I've gotten to know many faces. I've also been reconnected with a lot of people from my high school and it's nice to be able to walk around campus on any given day and see someone you know. That never happened when I was at UofI! Oh, and students complain about everything. Get used to it.

Kendra

i couldnt choose just one thing, there are so many awesome things about isu! the campus is just amazing, the people everywhere are nice and generous, the greek system is so fun and great and i've never seen so much pride and spirit when it comes to sports! this size is perfect i think. when i tell ppl i go here they seem proud and like, wow she goes to a big well known school, i wish i went there!! i spend most of my time on my dorm floor.

Danielle

Iowa State's campus is just the right size for me. I feel that I can get anywhere by a short walk, or by taking CyRide. I like how Lincoln Way is almost the dividing line between campus and campustown. It shows students that fun is seperate from school. I think one of the biggest memories I have from this year is the win from the Iowa vs. Iowa State football game. Our student section has crazy support and it was awesome to see everyone rush the field in spite of the amazing win.

Paige

The best thing about iowa state is the beautiful campus! However, if it were possible, I'd change the HARSH winters. I'm from IL, but there is something about AMES that just just way colder! When I tell people I go to Iowa State, a lot of them get it confused with university of iowa.. and a lot of people assume that I'm either a design or engineer major! I think Iowa state is too large for a town like Ames; there is no life outside of campus and "campustown" (the very small downtown area with bars and nightlife entertainment). There is a ton of school pride here, which is why we won The Most Dominant Mascot on Earth in 2007.

Kaye

The best thing about Iowa State is the Greek community. Going Greek is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's a great way to meet so many ambitious people and get involved throughout campus. It's an opportunity to get connected with people like you! I've made my best friends by joining a sorority. Many of these girls I would have never met anyways. Iowa State is great because there is so much open green space. It's such a pretty campus! Walking to class is like walking through a park. It also doesn't give you the feeling of being in a huge city where there are buildings everywhere and no grass in sight.

Tristan

I would say the dynamic is the best thing about Iowa State. There are so many things to get involved in and do we also have a very supportive faculty and staff. I think that the size is perfect, it is big enough to offer univeristy level sports and student activities but there is still individual attention with professors and academic resources. Campus is BEAUTIFUL and not too spread out, which is really nice. ISU also has a very healthy and positive Greek Community in which academics and community service are high.

Casey

VEISHEA! Veishea is just a great celebration by students and alumni filled with a parade, music, and an overall fun time had by all.

Liz

I can't think of one thing that is the best thing about ISU. Put a Starbucks and a Quiznos on campus, and lower the prices at the Business Cafe. Most people think that it's great that I'm a Cyclone and working at the same time, trying to get my degree. I spend most of my time at Gerdin since my business fraternity meets there, and 3 out of 4 of my classes are there. So far ISU's administration has been very helpful to me. I had lots of problems with the administration at UNI, so I was very grateful and happy when I didn't encounter those problems here. The biggest controversy on campus recently was whether or not to supply campus security with guns. I don't remember any other than that being that big. There is tons of school pride especially during the ISU - Iowa football game. I have never felt so proud to be a Cyclone when we surprised everyone by winning. There's really nothing unusual about ISU; it's a university, you should expect diversity. The one experience I'll always remember is getting my car towed at last year's VEISHEA. That won't happen this year. The most frequent student complaints are the prices for food on campus and that there's hardly any parking available. Lighten up on the parking tickets why don't you.

Lisa

Iowa State has a lot of pride, especially seen when we are playing against Iowa. Our fans are also much more down to earth and not as cocky as Iowa fans. Iowa State has a unique feel. It's a big school but Ames is small enough to have a small town community and everything you need is in Ames. One complaint about Iowa State is that the bars are for those 21 and up so if you are into that scene if you are underage then you have to wait it out or go elsewhere. However, it is nice not having all those annoying underagers at the already crowded bars. The university tries to put together activities on weekends for students as an alternative to going out and partying. There are Free Friday Flicks, plays, craft nights, billiards and bowling at the Underground, among many other things. It's a great way to meet people.

Theresa

I like the size and how safe you feel on campus. I spend time at my sorority and in my dorm room. I also spend alot of time at the library. I think there is a lot of school pride. something i will always remember is my expierence being greek it has been so much fun. i always hear the students complaining about the weather and walking to class.

jessica

Iowa State University is located in Ames, Iowa. Many people here would say that its too small and not enough things to do around here (compared to Iowa City, where Univ. of Iowa is located). Ames is a small town, so where school isn't in session is pretty lonely. Many students go home for breaks instead of staying around town. The best thing about ISU is we have sooo many clubs and organizations you can join. The first week of school there is a club fair where all the organizations meet in our Memorial Union. Iowa State is known for the amount of clubs we have available on campus. Another great thing about our school is VEISHA. Its the coming together of the 7 colleges are campus. Its a week long event where we showcase and take pride in our university. One thing I would change would be parking. It is horrible the amount of parking spots on campus. Also be careful where you park though. Iowa State University has a great reputation for giving out tickets. The average students gets about $125 a year in parking tickets.
