Mount Holyoke College Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Quinn

there are those that are fillthy rich and others who aren't. No one really discriminates. Also if you really wanna know about mtholyoke, visit holyokeconfessional.com..unfortunately you need to be on campus to access that. its basically like gossip girl...except ten times more hilarious. haha

Ruth

Most students wear whatever they want. Some wear sweats, and others all designer names. It really depends. There is intereaction between different types students, but most stay within their groups. Most of the students are from the East Coast/New England area. There are a ton of international students, which basically is our diversity. The students are definitely predominantly left, there are very few on the right.

Jessica

Racial issues come up from time to time, as they do everywhere. People are ignorant and assume all the black people are on financial aid and on all the white people are rich, neither of which is true for everyone. I think that is a problem everywhere though. Most people do not get dressed up for class, totally unecessary. Different types of students do interact but there are also some cliques, like at any small school. Mount Holyoke students come from allll over! There are a lot of rich girls, but there are also girls on financial aid who can go to MOunt Holyoke thanks in a large part to the rich girls. Students are politically aware and active, predominantly left. In the dining hall there would be some athletes from varsity teams, they all hang out together, then the equestrian team people, rugby people, and a lot of people from the Caribbean tend to hang out together.

Amanda

There must be hundreds of students from other countries. People are not competitive. While most are lovely people, I had to get to college before experiencing the junior high/ high school girl petty talking-behind-people's-backs and more obvious ways of throwing barbs. People smoke right outside the buildings and on the paths, so you can't get anywhere without inhaling carcinogens. I have taken an awful lot of flak for not drinking, but have found a few people on my side. I honestly think that having the ALANA students start orientation a few days earlier separates them from the rest of the student body, so people are extra aware of and uncomfortable with the topics of race, ethinicity, etc. Many non-white students are quite active with their cultural groups and clubs, but often white students feel left out, uncomfortable again, or even guilty simple because we're white. I have talked about this with many of my friends (white, like me. The Ghanaians hang out together, the Koreans together, and the whites by default) and the consensus is that we used to not even be aware of these differences in 2nd or 3rd grade, but now we're ultra-conscious about race and feel guilty because we're self-conscious. Geez. Vicious circle.

Hannah

One of my reasons for coming to MHC was how diverse the student body is. We have students from all over the world and it's one of the more interesting things about being here.

Claire

MHC is its own global village, with students from all walks of life. Some traits that all Mohos have in common are a love for learning, bettering the world, and open minds.

Devin

it's comfy, you can be whatever, and no one is gonna judge you. i'm a straight girl with a crapload of gay, bi sexual friends, you just roll with it. This isnt a place for some one who is afraid of different. we thrive on it.

Sarah

very diverse community

Quinn

A very multicultural campus, lots of racial discussions. The lesbian population seems to be overwhelming to many straight students, and somewhat overly present. Unless you're gay weekend life isn't too much fun and straight students go off-campus for fun. Casual dress, more dressed up in nicer weather. There is different group interactions, financial backgrounds are hard to tell, some wealthy kids, middle class, and poor, i'd say most are middle class. We are politically aware and active, and a very liberal campus, but there are the republicans too. Future earnings are talked about, but most students just want to love their field and then the success will come.

Chris

I am in the Hawaii club which is mostly made up of Asian Americans. I've been to Passover on campus which was a very feminist and open interpretation of the holiday. LGBQTQ have interesting film screenings sometimes. Socio-economic groups I can't think of any actually. Anyway there are a ton of groups on campus and a lot of diversity just among the students I've made friends with that lived near me my first year so I feel like this campus is very open to organizations and also mixing of organizations. A student that wanted a football team and lots of men on campus would feel strange here. Most students wear hoodies and jeans to class. Some get more dressed up while others just wear sweats. It varies quite a lot. Umm... four tables of students in a dining hall... there's often one that's all Chinese from China, sometimes one that's all black from Africa or the Carribean, but often there are completely mixed groups. Most students at Mt. Holyoke are probably from the North East, but like I said, there's a diverse student body here. People from all over the country and all over the world. Prevalent backgrounds are... middle class I suppose. Often lower and higher middle class too. Students are politically active and politically aware. Predominantly left though we do have an active Republican group on campus. Yes, students talk about how they won't make much money because the economy and job market is suffering so badly.

meg

My favorite thing about MHC is the diversity. I've met people from all around the world, and even though people hang out with friends from their home countries sometimes, they also spend time with other people. The majority of domestic students are very liberal, but they come from pretty diverse backgrounds. We have a very large LGBT population, including several trans students, so people who are uncomfortable with a loud and proud gay population may feel uncomfortable.

allie

There are some interesting people on campus. We're a very open minded and liberal campus for the most part. Not many people talk about how much money they have or don't have or will have... thats rude.

Siobhan

A student who would feel out of place at Mount Holyoke would realize it immediately. One needs an open and creative mind and a passion for change and academic challenges. These are the people Mt Hoyloke strives to accept. If you are accepted here it is a huge accomplishment, but it is a good idea to stay over for a night to see if you enjoy your experience. I think this is true for any college. All financial backgrounds are present. And almost all students are politically aware, and many are very active.

Alexis

Mount Holyoke students are generally very accepting of various backgrounds. At times, it can endorse one particular group over another and marginalize some. For example, the campus is very predominantly liberal, and those who are conservative can be made into minorities. Sexuality is a pretty big issue here - who is what orientation, etc. It usually isn't easy to tell what sort of financial background a student comes from.

Jess

most of my friends are international kids who are really cool and bring in their own ideas. its always to get a new perspective on everuything and they bring in a non-western point of view to class which is awesome.

Nico

Probably the best thing about Mt. Holyoke is the student body. Good job at that. Very diverse and well to do and everyone brings in their own culture so there is no exact one culture for Mt Holyoke at that.

Ryan

very diverse, very different, you get so many different kinds of people that it amazes you. you'll learn a lot.

Andy

Whatever you're looking for you'll find it here I can assure you. Students are generally non formal to class and wear jeans or sweats. I dont like to dress up to clss so I dont. We intermingle with everyone and that is a good thing to do I believe.

Chris

Diverse. You learn so much from their culture its amazing. Thats the best thing about MOHO. My friends are from all over the world, LITERALLY.

Janice

many many international students widely represented from all over the place along with students of other racial background and ethnicity, black, brown, hispanic, asia... i go to class in sweatshirt and sweatpants most of the times but some girls dress up too. i roll out of bed and walk to class so im a mess and a lot of kids do that for early morning classes. usually jean and a tshirt? same old stuff

Caroline

As I said a lot of white rich kids with their ponies. We do have a kickass equestrian team I hear but it still is predominantly white and rich. It is a small college so to expect anything different is wrong too I suppose.

Lynn

Most students wear whatever is comfortable to class. Most Mount Holyoke students are either from the general area, i.e., the Northeast, from the western side of the country, or are international students.

Lauren

Mount Holyoke students are freakishly friendly. Everyone is made to feel welcome on campus. Although there are distinct groups of people (the rugby team, the equestrian team, the crew team) the campus is small enough that everyone knows and interescts with most everyone else.

Alex

there are many groups.

Casey

I found it to be a racially/ethnically diverse student body. Politically its pretty left, and we lefties love to preach to the choir. If you're left leaning expect scads of affirmations that you corner the market on objective truth and just generally being correct.

Annie

you must be accepting to fit in here. we have people from all walks of earth and people aren't afraid to let their true selves shine.

Andy

Perfect student body. Someone who is bigoted would probably feel out of place here.

Toni

All types of students everywhere, blacks, whites, hispanic, latin-americans, asians, indians, europeans, you name it and we've got it. The good thing is its well accepted and not generally looked down upon, though international kids do get the 'oh, you're international, you should be speaking' attitude now and then but there are just so many clubs that are led by international students across campus that such an attitude does not last for too long

Stef

All such experiences have been relatively good. Non I feel I can get along with everyone because everyone is pretty nice. Jeans, a blouse and shoes or boots. Yes but not a lot you tend to stick to the people who are like you or in a group with you. Well you would have a sports group like maybe squash, a group of Nepalis, a group of juniors and a group of people who live in a particular dorm. most MHC students are from the east coast I think not really sure they are so many people from all over. Financial background of most Moho's is middle class to upper middle class and very rich. There are also people who are less well off but the majority are in the middle class and above. Yea students are politically active to a certain extent predominately center left. Of course money is always very important, though some students talk about non profit careers as well

Cathy

Mt. Holyoke has a HUGE and diverse student body. If you're white then you almost feel like a minority at times. I was at Dartmouth one time and I was amazed at the number of white kids there which shows how many international kids mount holyoke has, its just awesome......

Harper

You can't really say where most Mt. Holyoke students are from because people here are so diverse. We have tons of international students from all over the world and I believe that there are also students from all 50 states (I'm not positive, though).

Jackie

racial well being is intact at mount holyoke and so is religious and other diverse areas. LGBT issues rise up now when people are attacked for being gay and then there is a whole surge of 'don't hate' movement that begins. a lot of times though i feel like its the straight ppl who are the minority than the gay ones...

Bevan

No such bad experiences. Normal clothing to class, who cares. Yes, different types interact. No such stereotypical tables. All over the world. All kinds. Yes, somewhat. center. maybe, not sure.

Carly

I do feel there is a lot of hypocrisy on this campus. Everyone claims that just because they do not believe in binary gender or are not racist, they are nonjudgmental. When it comes down to it, it really feels like everyone is always in everyone else's business and judging them for it. On the other hand, everyone here is very courteous, helpful, and nice. There are so many different types of people, it's impossible not to fit in. I really appreciate the fact that we have such a diverse and international population.

Greta

students are very politically aware. it's nice because you can tell people are well informed and educated. it gets exhausting, however, when EVERYONE has to tell you how they feel, and they want to argue about it.

KC

Here diversity is incredible, in all terms! I think intolerant people might feel out of place here; most students wear whatever they fell like, some students go to class the way they wake up; interaction is really common and stimulated by the student body itself; Usually students that take the same classes or that live together, or know each other sit together, but wherever there is a vague place, one sits down and start talking, if one feels comfortable to. The social and economic background distribution is pretty balanced, the school gives a lot of financial aid; students come from everywhere in the globe, about 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} are international, but within the us, the majority is from new england. The students are politically aware and active, we have our SGA (student government association), and the community interacts and gets involved with political issues abroad and discuss them even in our newspaper; I'm not sure about the students average political position; Most of us project ourselves to leading positions in the future.

Angela

racial diversity is like a pair of Camo pants. totally diverse in terms of race, orientation, "class," etc. The type of student who doesn't care about school and likes to party and be ditzy would NOT feel like one of the Mohos. There has to be balance, and school is everyone's priority here. For those who don't value it as much, they usually end up transferring. I'm amazed at how UNAWARE kids are politically. It kind of disgusts me and makes me really worry about the general public. Mostly left though...

Jerry

I think the only students that would feel out of place at MHC are transgender students because MHC is a women's college. I would say that most MHC students are from New England or New York.

Heather

The campus is very diverse and very accepting of everyone. Most students here are very fashionable, especially since most of the girls that go here are upper class. Don't expect to wear sweats or pjs out of the dorm! The four tables in the dining hall have the Dungeons and Dragons nerds, the preppy rich girls who wear their Uggs with every single outfit, the butch gays and the wanna be men, and the fourth table has the riders (sometimes the riders and the preppy girls intermingle). The most prevalent background is upper class- there are lots of BMWs, Uggs, North Face products and anything else expensive that you can think of. Sometimes it can get a little frustrating (I'm from a middle income family and don't have much spending money).

Stephanie

Mt Holyoke is one of the most racially diverse colleges in the nation. International students get really good financial aid. However, I've noticed that most of the students, regardless of where they come from, they seem to all be from upper class families. So expect to see a racially, but not economically diverse student body. A person who is uncomfortable with queer life, or anyone who is different from herself, would be uncomfortable. Be accepting and able to embrace all types of women, and you'll be fine. Uggs and Northface. 4 groups: nerds, gays, riders, jocks. Students are politically aware and active. 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} if students are left-wingers. I've never heard a student talk about her future salary.

Lydia

The people I tend to hang out with are people that enjoy the diversity of all kinds that are on campus. There really are very few intolerant people here but there also are a lot of overly sensitive people. I think that some students who are really conservative would feel really out of place just because there is a lot of sexual energy that comes out on the weekends, especially at Las Vegas night and Undressage, and also with how accepting the campus is in general of lots of different life paths and choices. Students wear almost anything to class. Some students get dressed up and others go in sweatpants and flipflops (or other casual footwear). This is a very politically aware campus and it tends towards the left but the College Republicans are very vocal on campus. There are students from every financial background - no joke. MHC does a really good job of putting us all together on equal ground so the majority of the time you don't know who is in what position.

Kendall

I have no problems or discomfort or experienced any assault related to these issues on campus. I don't think any one would, if it's not that they are too shy to make friends; the campus is very well represented and you can always find people that are like you. Casual. Yes. A group of friends that are really loud and active; two or three close friends, relatively quiet;a club dinner meeting; a table with random people that may not know each other. Everywhere from the globe. Don't see any prevalent ones, maybe middle class. Some of them, a good portion. I believe it's right, at least this year. Never that I have heard of.

Chris

Very diverse, except there aren't any boys (and I think their perspective needs to be taken into account sometimes, too!). I think every girl feels out of place and completely in place at the same time. It's not normal for someone to want to go to a women's college in this day and age, and it takes some adjusting, but everyone is super friendly. People wear whatever they want (although the Uggs and leggings with no skirts kind of sketches me out). There aren't four tables of students, there are many students who are always giggling and reacting beyond tables--everyone knows everything else. There aren't cliques or sororities--it's like being in one BIG sorority. Mt Holyoke students are from EVERYWHERE in the world, with many different financial backgrounds. Yes, very aware and active, but can also be pretty sheltered. Predominantly left, but there are some hardcore righties on campus who like to heat things up. Yes, we talk about how we'll either be really rich or end up in a cardboard box.

Charlie

I dont think any kind of student will feel out of place here as the student body here is very diverse, comprising students of almost all racial and religious backgrounds!

Whitney

No student could ever feel out of place at Mt Holyoke. Everyone finds their niche eventually. You can find people who walk on heels when there's sleet outside as well as people who wear Uggh boots with a pair of shorts and a bikini top on a sunny day. You will find loads of girls in sweat pants and many more in jeans, but dressing up for class is not much of a Mt Holyoke culture. As I said before, we have a unique student body. There are a lot of rich kids who sport Polo wear, ride horses on the Equestrian team, and feel kindred with their Gucci bags, while there are others who wear the same sweatshirt seven days in a row. There are the 'Lunar Howlers' who like to howl at the full moon from the Amphitheater (and other locations too, like the parking hill near Ham Hall), and we even have a knitting club, where we sit back, relax, knit away to glory. We usually like to bundle up because its cold most of the times, and snuggling with each other is a common thing at Mt Holyoke. Mt Holyoke is different because its student body, which is a large population of smart women, are very comfortable with each other. We are very physical with you friends, we hug a lot, we like to stay cozy, we walk mighty close to each other, and we kiss a lot too. At the start of the semester if you hear a shriek and you turn to see what the commotion is about, then you'll find two women bounding towards each other, and one simply jumps on the other and they bounce around hugging and gushing for at least five minutes. We love our ladies here at Mt Holyoke, and we love because we're a big family...all of us!

Marissa

There are many opportunities to share perspectives between cultural orgs, religion and sexual orientations. We have a lot of student orgs that pertain to different backgrounds as well as cultural houses. A non-academic oriented everyday, all day party girl would feel very out of place here at MHC. Most students wear jeans/t-shirts/casual shoes...or sweatpants! Everyone interacts in class regardless of differences. Four tables at the dining hall: 1) My table: varsity athletes that are loud and probably talking about sex and related issues, making lots of jokes 2) the Asian table 3) the nerdy girls who are quiet, stay in and have squeaky laughs 4) the crew team Most MHC students are from the States, east coast but we do have a large CA population. We are almost 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} international students in addition. Very diverse. Financial backgrounds: Middle - upper middle class Students VERY politically aware, predominantly left Students don't talk about personal earnings.
